Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I 'm using GREP, and I need to make my REGEX select a block of text. The file is composed of many instances of:

...}, {code: 123abc, lorem: ipsum, boolean: true, dolor: sit}, {code: ...

So... The delimiter could be <}, {>, but CUT doesn't allows more than 1 character as delimiter.
What to do? Using { or } or , isn't an option!

Has anyone noticed how youtube videos are currently loading slow in firefox?

It seems to be adblock plus acting up, since if i try to copy the URL while it's loading i get the URL for the ad.

I dont know if this is a problem locally or if everybody is experiencing this. I'm pretty sure it started today.

Reposting here as well as the /sqt/.

I've a problem with sound only coming through my right earphone. I'm pretty sure it's a software problem because I noticed exactly when it happened browsing youtube videos. I'm on a laptop running Ubuntu and the headphones were connected by a USB audio adapter because the regular audio input was fucked. I'm pretty sure the problem now is software because I heard this change happen and nothing was bending or moving. Tried unplugging then plugging in again. Tried shutting down and starting up again. Now my pleb brain is out of ideas. Help me /g/. Where do I start?

If you didn't changed anything software side, it's most likely your earphone's fault.

yes, though some menus might be a problem, for these you can usually use vlc.

So it can't use subtitles as well right?
Also the file is in ISO format, is there a way to re-encode the episodes to mkv or something similar?
>>
>>55833629
That might be it tb'h. The jack wasn't bending or anything but the headphones (not earbuds btw, to avoid confusion, I know sometimes people call earbuds earphones) were making a bit of a noise in one side (I can't remember which, but the right has now lost sound) when nothing was playing last night. Like a scratching. Bit of paranoia made me think a bug got in there by the sound but that's not likely. Maybe the headphones have just blown out on one side. There wasn't a bang or anything when it did cut out though. I could always test with another set when I get hold of one.
>>
>>55833687
mpv supports subtitles.
you can do that with ffmpeg if you feel the need to.

This is very weird. I've never had any problems with mpv even when I was using NNEDI, but for some reason, a certain scene in pic related is extremely slow. I'm taking a peak in the manual, but there isn't anything in there that suggests any improvement.

Here's part of the mpv.conf just in case. I've tried it without any subtitle setting as well and there still is a problem.

So my thinkpad has an ExpressCard SD card reader (pic related). It worked for a while, but a couple weeks ago it just stopped mounting SD cards. The reader shows up when I do lspci, but none of my SD cards show up in disks and they don't automount.

Tried both fglrx and radeonsi, and both are okayish? They do different things better than each other. Some things radeonsi is better and others fglrx is better (in general, not just with emulation). Apparently the new AMDGPU driver is much better, but it doesn't work well with older cards currently.

Currently running a fresh Arch install with fglrx and my main frontend, RetroArch, is definitely better with proprietary, but certain settings can still cause slowdown (a lot of shaders, for example). Haven't tried the others yet.

Speaking of which, I have asked already, but how's AMDGPU on emulators? I'm tempted to just ditching Nvidia altogether due to headaches with their proprietary drivers and kernel upgrades. The performance isn't that great on games with AMDGPU, but I can live with that.

In Debian Testing/Sid I haven't gotten issues with that, it's all very smooth. They're not so far on the bleeding edge so you don't get headaches like that

99% of the time, any bizarre issues you come across have a very well documented reason for happening, and you can fix them easily. They're not just magic

A lot of the time you can diagnose, check symptoms, and in most cases you read the logs and it'll flat out tell you what's wrong.

Most of the time, using Linux is pretty EZ-PZ. Depending on if you have some bizarro hardware there can be a bit of a growing pain, but once you have everything set up it's easy as fuck

I've never used Linux before but want to try it out because it looks a lot cleaner and nicer overall. If I like it, I will eventually dual boot win8.1 or 10 for games and Linux for everything else. Is Mint any good? It looks aesthetically pleasing. I basically know nothing about Linux.
>>
>>55835674
In danger of asking the obvious: you installed them this way, right?

https://linuxconfig.org/nvidia-geforce-driver-installation-on-debian-jessie-linux-8-64bit

You didn't just install the driver from the manufacturer right?

>>55835699
Mint is okay to get your feet wet, but it usually advised to use it aside from that. It compromises security for stability because they have their own spaghetti code derived from Ubuntu, which is in turn derived from Debian

I'd say a good beginner distro would be any of the Ubuntus, or if you're feeling like going straight to the grandpa and learn a bit more, Debian.
>>
>>55835726
>>55835699
*usually advised against using it aside from that
Sorry, typo

Also, you can make any distro look just like any other, so the aesthetics shouldn't really be a heavy part of your decision. Think of the distro as the engine of your car and your DE (Desktop Environment) as the paint.

if this anon is any indication, you might be able to run a lot of your games on Linux too, my man >>55832374

>>55835496
Yeah, I have. But I'm also going off of a year or two ago since at the time, I pretty much decided against trying again. The last one I tried was Fallout 2 with the HiRes patch a few months back, and for some reason that ran at like half-speed even with or without compositing.

Again, though, things are improving. Speed and performance, in both the proprietary and open source drivers, are much better than when I built this PC a few years back. And from what I've read, the new AMDGPU driver is much better than both of them, so maybe it's just a matter of me needing a new GPU at this point to see the improvements.
>>
>>55835726
I had a bad experience installing the driver that way very early, just about when I switched to GNU/Linux about 6 or so months ago. There was a problem similar to what I had right now back then. I grab them from Nvidia now since 352.79 is pretty old. I don't like it either anon.

If you are not afraid to get your hands a bit dirty, Debian is a good choice. A trusty wiki and browser page open on your phone or another computer while you install things should see you through it

If it sounds a bit intimidating, you should just use some Ubuntu flavor, like Ubuntu GNOME, or Lubuntu.

Testing and Sid are technically rolling release. Doesn't mean they're on the very tippy top of bleeding edge though, but they're still rolling. You never have to install new versions and that's what rolling means

Sid is a good choice for bleeding edge (but not hemorrhaging) while still having stability

grab the iso that fits your system from https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

get rufus (a usb disk imager) or https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/ this and write the iso to your flash drive (this will delete everything on it so put the data you want to keep elswhere for now)

when thats done reboot your computer and hold f12 and f2 to get into your uefi settings. go to the boot tab, make sure all usb ports are above your hdd and you windows boot manager, then turn off secure boot.

turn off computer, insert usb, boot up. and if you did it correctly start installing linux.

normie-proof is basically why you have issues with other OS's. they try to hide the functions of the system itself for the majority of users which allows those with actual computer knowledge to exploit that.

not making it "normie-proof" is why linux is as good as it is

The problem with Arch isn't Arch; it's the part of the communty who feel 1337 for successfully installing it, which results in elitism.

Arch is what you make out of it.

Take me as example. I'm a foot shit eating freetard, use linux-libre, and check the licenses before I install a package via pacman. I don't bully Debians or Newfriends. I just enjoy Arch for the simple install and the AUR.

>What is Stallmanism?

Stallmanism is an organized religion, a set of stories, symbols, beliefs and practices that give meaning to the practitioner's experiences of life through reference to an ultimate power or reality.

>What do Stallmanists believe in?

Generally, Stallmanists believe that the GPL - version 3 or (at your option) any later version - is a sacred text and that Richard Stallman is the Prophet who brought this text to us.

>So Stallmanists believe in God?

Yes, but not as a type of imaginary cosmic telepathic friend. Stallmanism teaches us that God is Us, God is the Community. In this respect, Stallmanism has roots in the Humanist philosophies.

>How does one become a Stallmanist?

To discover one's Stallmanism requires an individual journey of meditation, observation, participation, and understanding. The destination of this journey is Enlightenment, the point at which an individual realizes his or her Stallmanism, joins the Community, and becomes one with God.

I'm just up an ubuntu server for torrenting on my netbook with WLAN as the sole option to connect to the internet. So far, the
iwconfig

and
ifconfig

commands yield pic related.

I've googled ofc and seems like there is no way to get the driver (if any) other than using apt-get which requires a connection.

The wireless chip in my netbook is the Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 rev01 which worked flawlessly to download things during the install process. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dont do anything listed here.
Use the aur, it has alot of packages, people shitposting about it use obsure software or cant make a PKGBUID themselves
Use anything else if you want lts, as lts will conflict as things update, futher putting your system in the past
There is NO open drivers that arent balls.ATI has always been shit , and even the blob ones are shit. Noveau wont be fully functional on aything released this decade.Nvidia has no problems at all. Even if you have shitty old hardware, there is a freeze package for you, without gimping the rest of your system with an LTS kernel.
Everything in the offical repo, is released from upstream, if upstream fucks up, of course downstream will have issues.Despite this, packages are held in testing repo prior to be pushed main.
