Tell me why my DL speeds would dramatically increase for no conceivable reason.
>usually get around 3MB/s
>had Comcast for years
>move to different part of town and change to a different cable ISP (Wide Open West)
>have same DL speed for around the same price blah blah
>move to different part of town again but keep same ISP (different city technically but it's the neighboring city and not very important)
>have same DL speeds for several months
>over the past ~2 months or so, speeds go to over double
>get around 7MB/s whenever I download anything now (from torrents to DDLs)
>just now while downloading a game, peak went to 35MB/s
I'm not complaining at all but I'm genuinely confused.

This might sound dumb but how can I tell if this IDE hard drive I bought is used or not?

It was advertised as new but came open. Though its like a 10 year old HD form MAXTOR and is IDE so I assume its just new but open box or part of a bulk stock they have.

Also how the fuck do I connect it to my PC? I have a IDE to USB cable but I assume I still have to power the HD no? I have never used IDE before.

I dont want to swap out my SATA drives, I just need to use it as an external for about an hour. Its for my PS2

I have no idea what you mean by this. Sorry. Could you explain a bit further?

When I asked a friend a few weeks ago, he said that there could be more bandwidth allocated to me since perhaps not much bandwidth is being used in my surrounding area. Could that be it, or something similar?

So they may have replaced and improved the infrastructure in my small area for virtually no reason? Blue/Black/Red ones are usually SATA3(500-580MB/s limit).

Gray ones are SATA2(290-300MB/s limit).

Install it on a SATA3 port.

That's what I would have thought (and a quick Google search resulted in mostly people saying the ICH10R port is better) but in my mobo manual (where that pic is from) it says the grey Marvell port is 6Gb/s and the blue ICH10R port is only 3Gb/s.
>>
>>55709872
Well then connect it on the SATA 6GB/s otherwise your SSD will be bottlenecked from 550MB/s to 300MB/s.

You have one weird motherboard layout and design.

when on my laptop, i rest my right thumb on left click, and scroll with right index finger.
the only laptops that allow me to do this are Toshiba Laptops with Synaptics drivers and support.
this software allows you to edit sensitivity and create dead zones on the touchpad, and let me rest my thumb on left click without moving the cursor.
Toshiba is leaving the laptop industry, so ill be left without any choices soon.

Alright, so my friend is building a desktop and he didn't buy windows with it, so we're trying to figure out what his best option is before pirating it.

As of now, he's got a desktop with windows 7 on it, but he plans to give this desktop to his parents so that key can't be used on the new computer.

We were wondering if it would be possible to somehow use the free windows 10 update with his 7 key but then install it on a different computer so he can get windows 10 on his new rig and keep 7 on his old one.
Any way to do this or is there another strategy I haven't thought of?

Hey /g/. I'm building a new PC primarily for gaming and videos. I don't do anything too crazy.

For cost purposes, newegg is having a sale on FX-4350 with a motherboard for 165. Is the performance drop significant enough to ignore this and get an fx-83--. Do not buy an AMD chip before Zen comes out. They were questionable purchases when they were new. Now they're just a joke. They put out a significant amount of heat relative to their performance, and their performance is shit by today's standards.

If you have to buy something now, get a 1151 board and some cheap CPU like a Celeron G3900, which runs like $50. Then save up for a better CPU.

Computer Tard here.

I'm stuck on a family PC at the moment while visiting, and it's a struggle doing anything because that Windows module installer 'trustedinstall' activates and sits around for 5-7 hours sucking up 86% of the 6GB of RAM this thing has.

How can I safely prevent this?
>>
>>55710583
Go into control panel>administrative tools>services
And look for WMI or trustedinstaller and either disable it or set it to manual so it doesn't automatically start by itself. You can also 'stop' it for now and it should fuck off.
JUST be sure to enable it again before you leave so your family won't know you fiddled with it.

Should I get a Chromebook or a low-end Dell Latitude if I want a secondary laptop for working on things on the go? It should do what I want it to do (Debian, word processing, development) without internet. Performance isn't a biggie, just durability and battery life.

>>55710562
You know your use case better than anybody so don't let me deter you, but the question is if anything you're doing is being bottlenecked by RAM. If it is, go nuts. 16 or 32GB may be your speed. If it isn't and your need for more RAM is likely to be outlived by your CPU/mobo usefulness, it's not worth paying for.

Holy fuck so much misinformation. First of all. the amount of time you've had windows installed on your computer has jack shit to do with anything. You never lose licenses.

If you install windows 7 on a computer, then upgrade to 10, you can go back and forth as much as you want, from a license perspective. You can't take either of those licenses to another computer, unless your 7 was a retail (meaning you paid super full price for it and it wasn't included from buying your pc). If it is a retail, you can move 7 to a new computer provided you delete all copies of windows from the first one. There is no way to have 2 computers running off of the same original license at the same time. And you don't get a key when you upgrade to 10, you get an entitlement. Anything I said for 7 applies to 8 too.

Traditionally you would just download your ethernet/usb drivers from the manufacturer's website to another pc and then copy them over via flashdrive. However since you need the usb drivers first on skylake, you've got a bit of a catch22. Normally I would recommend using the win7 repair command line, but since you've already got ubuntu running just download the drivers there and drop them into your windows desktop. Once you've got the internet running you're also going to want to download:

support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810
and
support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612

to get your windows updates working.

The whole chapter about init-values via a function. Why should i use that? And the included example about 'Popcount'. What am i doing here? I know that i somehow take all bytes of an 64-Bit Interger and somehow loop through it to ... count 1 ? Can anon explain me this code?

So I recently built my first PC and decided I wanted to install windows on it. I downloaded a windows 10 iso from my laptop and installed it onto a bootable USB using Rufus. After plugging the USB into my newly built computer the windows 10 installation asked me for a product key. realizing I didn't have one, and that the installation wouldn't let me get any farther without one, I turned off my computer. Now when I go to turn on my computer to try it again nothing shows up on the screen. Did I fuck up somehow?

I'm pretty sure any bluetooth speaker will only pair with one device at a time.

There are also 4 sockets with SE1 and SE2 next to them where I had my SSD.

The problem is that your HDD speeds are dropping to 2.4MB/s, it should never do that.
SE is probably just SATAexpress, not so different than SATA3 for a HDD, just that the limit increases from 550MB/s to 900MB/s.

Use macrium reflect to clone the disk, then go to system properties and re-asses your system performance. That should do it. Anyway, just picked up K&R and am I supposed to get confused during some of the exercises, or is this supposed to be a straightforward book? I know the audience is mostly computer scientists but I dunno if I'm barking up the wrong tree and should use a different resource.

youtube is using DASH streaming which has separate audio and video streams which get muxed in the browser.
so you can just download the audio.
check with -F to see what streams are available or just run it with -f "bestaudio".

this only works with videos who are served as DASH, which should be the majority already, but some low quality videos don't have this.
>>
>>55714076
Just use youtube - mp3. org

It's the fastest and most famous, the file is only an mp3 (why would there be video data?)

I'm due for a few component upgrades.

I need to replace the MOBO, CPU and i'd prefer to upgrade the GPU to a RX 480 aswell ( from a 670 ).

Is it recommended to wait for the new AMD zen line or should I just get a Xeon E3 1226.

Also DDR3 Ram works just fine, paired with a Xeon of that model right?

I'm starting to plan on studying for Network+ since my A+ is almost gone in a month. I used to use any random A+ book and youtube videos coupled with my work experience, but I don't know if that is a good idea anymore since back then it was all multiple choice and not simulation/open ended.

Would investing money on a program like a net+ CBT training plus buying a Mike Meyers would be a good idea to study up full time for it.

I guess it depends how much it costs where you live.

Tox, Jitsi, ChatSecure, BitMessage, etc. All are open source which is required for these type of things. I'd say Tox is a solid alternative.

I don't know much about Signal. In order for these applications to work, both parties have to have a mutual understanding of the fact they want privacy and encryption. If both sides don't use it, it doesn't work.

>>
>>55716533
From what I know, and I may be wrong, it's only for Turbo users due to an issue with advertisements and HTML5. Furthermore, it's in beta and only the controls are in HTML5. The rest is Flash.

Something along those lines. Basically, Twitch is FAR from HTML5 right now.

I'd find a torrent of 7 and use Daz Loader and upgrade before the end of the month. 10 torrents are iffy and it's hard, if even possible to Crack. And most don't try to because it's free so they do the above. Once the free period ends I'm sure people will rush out lots of cracks.

zotac screwed me, so I'd never buy any of their cards again. palit seems like the cheap chinese brand.
I'd go for gigabyte asus evga or msi.

if you don't care about overclocking just get any, it doesn't matter
>>
>>55717127

I don't care about overclocking - just want the cheapest card I can get which is reliable enough.

The EVGA one is a smaller card with a single fan, whereas the Zotac and Palit models have double fans, so unsure which one to choose.
>>
>>55717124
1. I shouldn't even replay as you aren't follow polite procedure.

2. I don't know the answer to your question

3. I never heard of Palit (but that don't mean much as I don't know all the manufactures out there) and Zotac is has a historical background in simple low energy embedded devices which has been getting better. So I would look at more expensive cards from manufactures that are know to do this kind of stuff, people have mentioned ASUS and others.
There are many manufactures out there, research the companies and what they do to get a better idea. Like how I had never heard of Micro, but later found that Intel and other big names use occasionally use their memory chips for their stuff, thus I assume Micro makes decent SS memory units if other companies put their reputation behind them when they have too high of a demand.
>>
>>55717258

Why is my computer running so slow? Everything is extremely slow. Even while I'm typing this, the delay is huge. I didn't do anything differently that I could think of and it worked fine before.

I don't know if a restart will fix it, I'm sure it will, but I'm curious as to why this happens in general. This never happened to me before.

I also have Malwarebytes and ESET, but neither reported anything.
>>
>>55717295
>svchost.exe
>>
>>55717295
svchost.exe runs as a free space for lots of things, so may as well label it "other".

One problem I had was Windows 7 updates would get stuck in svchost.exe and just drain everything. Restarting only delayed it. After lots of looking someone on 4chan /g/sqt/ directed me to a Microsoft patch that fixed it. Wish I had kept the link.

Or Chrome could have messed up, in which case rebooting will fix it, barring some larger issue.

Don't see anything else really running.

svchost.exe is also known to be jacked by malware, but anything short of a full rootkit attack should be stopped by your software, and that level of attack on users is rare. So I consider it remote, but not impossible.
