You upgrade. But then you just undo it. That’s the loophole: you don't have to KEEP W10 on your computer. If you install it once, say for 5 minutes, the microsoft servers note your PC’s hardware as eligible for Windows 10 going forward, so you have a permanent "Digital Entitlement" on that computer, even if you go back to your old windows immediately.


There's 4 ways to do this…

1) The easiest method is to just upgrade to W10, then downgrade using the “Go Back” button in settings (available for 30 days).

2) If you’re specifically worried about windows messing up the install, you can make a system backup image instead with Macrium Reflect or similar, do the upgrade, then use a recovery disk to restore the image.

3) Or upgrade then clean install your old OS

4) Install W10 to a blank drive or partition then activate with your 7/8 key. Or backup/restore like option #2. Good choice for linux users who have a 7/8 key they want upgraded.


If you choose #2, make a recovery disk & a backup of your system drive. Otherwise there’s no prep, just accept the W10 upgrade. You could also download the W10 install disk if you’re having trouble with windows updater. Just click "Download tool now" to make a DVD or USB, then run it within windows. Skip downloading updates. Once W10 is installed, make sure it’s activated itself online by clicking Start> Settings> Update & Security> Activation. Make sure it says “Windows 10 on this device is activated with a digital entitlement"

With W10 activated it’s time to restore your old OS. For option #1 use the 30 day "Go Back" setting in W10 to recover your old copy of windows (stored in C:\Windows.old). To find it, click Start> Settings> Update & Security> Recovery, then hit the “Get started” button under Go back to Windows 7(or 8.1). For options 2-4 either restore your backup or reinstall your old OS. Mission accomplished.

"KEYS? Where we're going we don't need KEYS." Most copies of W10 don’t have keys at all. A "digital entitlement" means Windows 10 is paired to your PC automatically by a digital fingerprint of its hardware. So whenever you reinstall W10 after that, even if it’s a clean install, windows will reactivate itself online by validating that fingerprint automatically.

You should probably keep a copy of the key you got with your ORIGINAL windows 7/8.1 install (usually stuck to your system case anyway), because major hardware changes can sometimes disrupt the automatic activation. In that case you would call the microsoft activation hotline and explain the situation to them. They usually correct things pretty easily, and the old key can often help with the process, which hasn't changed much since Windows 7. You might also need the old key if you decide to reinstall your original windows later on and you don't have any backups or recovery media with it pre-activated.

No, you can go back and forth as much as you want, as long as you have your old installer and key (or a backup/recovery). You're not officially allowed to have both versions of windows installed at the same time, like a dual boot or VM. The downgrade rights last until 2020 for windows 7 and 2023 for windows 8, when official support ends for the OSes.

Windows 7/8.1 are available as free downgrades IF you have W10 PRO, otherwise you’re supposed to buy a copy. You’d also need to check that your core hardware has drivers for that version of windows. It's a bit complicated but here's instructions:

That's probably from Windows Update Sharing. W10 uses a peer-to-peer network for updates, which means you are updating other peoples computers too. You can disable it by going to settings> Update & Security> Advanced Options> Choose how updates are delivered> Updates from more than one place. If you set it to 'PCs on local network' then your computers will just share their updates locally and save you internet bandwidth. Or just turn it off.

The only way that would really work is if you had an old PC that you'd already upgraded to 10 before the cutoff that you were willing to transfer the license away from, and even then it would be a long shot. You would basically call up the activation hotline and tell them you were installing a new motherboard in an old PC. In that case having an account paired to the old license would probably help, but it would still be a longshot.

Everything from your old OS is stored in a folder called windows old for 30 days after you upgrade. Nothing in that folder should be changed, in fact any changes to files or settings you make while in 10 will be lost when you revert. However sometimes things can go wrong so if your concerned then making a backup with macrium reflect is a great idea and actually doesn't take very long most of the time.

You do retain the transfer rights. To the retail copy of 7 that you bought. You just don't get an additional retail copy of 10 thrown in. The free upgrade thing was always considered more of a free bonus than a right. You still have what you paid for, and if you decide you're willing to go back to 7, you can still move your retail 7 to another computer at any point. At least that's how they're arguing it now. I intend to switch to Windows 10 on a computer currently running W7 (I only use this one for gaymen and use another computer running linux for everything else, so botnet isn't quite as big a deal in this case).
Will I have to do anything to prepare before I move over, particularly about my drivers (e.g. uninstall GPU drivers and download W10 ones before I switch), or will everything just werk if I move over without doing anything?
I did try searching this first, of course, but I couldn't find anything related to my question.

It's usually pretty automatic. The upgrade tool takes all of that into account before it offers the upgrade. If you want you can do a system backup just to be on the safe side, but most people don't. When you're done you should probably check your GPU has the latest drivers, and if you want double check your device manager to make sure everything has been recognized.

Do you think Win10 will boost the casual use of Linux in normies? I'm the "computer guy" among my friends so I'm always formatting their drives and reistalling Win7, but maybe in the future Win10 will be harder or impossible to pirate, and at least where I live people don't even consider paying for an OS as something anyone would ever do. It will burn the .iso to the USB and you need to boot from the USB and follow the installer. If you open it in 7, it will want you to upgrade and put all the 7 files in windows.old for recovery if needed.

1. Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
scroll down and click on Download Tool.

2. Start "tool" which will download the ISO image of W10. Select correct W10 version (based on what W7/8 version you have)

3. Once ISO is downloaded burn to DVD. The DVD is a bootable W10 installer.

4. Make sure you have space on a HD for a W10 partition (unless you are bold and plan to overwrite your existing Win partition)

5. Boot from installer DVD. It will ask for your W7/8 license key in the process and install a clean install of W10

Alright so a partition is like having your drive divided into smaller virtual drives. You need to shrink the single partition that currently takes up all of your HDD so you have room to make a second partition on it. That second one will be where windows 10 goes. It can be done without a third party tool, but you can mess it up too. I would use Easeus partition manager because even though it's a little bloaty, it really holds your hand.

The update works like this: You upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7/8/8.1, then Microsoft will harvest as much information about your PC as they can, and in the future use that to personally identify you and reactivate your copy if you reinstall. Downloading an ISO is not enough, since they freely distribute those anyway. You can skip the whole ordeal and just pirate the thing in the future if you decide to sell your asshole to Microsoft.

Calling MS is a pretty sure thing though. I bought Windows 7, the OEM version even, when it was new and I've gone through like 4 or 5 motherboards. Each time I just call the number and type in a long ass code, then the automated thing repeats back another long ass number that you type in.

Ok well if you can copy everything important off of it, then partitioning doesn't matter. Windows will just erase whatever is on the hard drive, then when it's installed you can copy things back onto it.

Well in your case there will pretty much be a screen where you just delete everything (really easy) and then windows will just make a new partition that takes up the entire hard drive. Partitions are a little hard to explain in a flash, but basically a hard drive is useless unless it has a filesystem put on it, with rules to help the OS find where all the files are. So partitions are the little bubbles of sanity in the abyss. You can have a single one take up the entire drive, or dozens of them on one disk. They tend to each get their own letter and appear separately in your computer, as if they were physically separate disks. And when an OS first gets installed, it needs an empty one all to itself, although you can add things later.

I had Windows 8.1 installed but I upgraded to Windows 10.

However, I've been thinking about upgrading my CPU from an i5 to an i7. Does changing the CPU deactivate windows? Is there a way around this?

Me too, sometimes I can't watch youtube videos or load most pages because W10 updates uses all of my limited bandwidth.
