IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Which of the W series have IPS or AFFS screens?
>>
>>55706065
Wouldn't be available until W540 and onward. W530 and W520 have really kickass TN panels, though.
>>
>>55706075
Are there any I could do unofficial swaps on? I really, really hate TN panels.

So I got my Advanced dock working wonderfully. Only problem is that sometimes the GPU won't display and sometimes it isn't picked up by the PC (fan won't even spin). Another problem is the PC doesn't boot whilst plugged into the dock.

Anyone got any ideas/questions?
>>
>>55706075
How good are those panels?
Do they make the TN panels who apple used look bad?
>>

All i want is my x61t.
>>
>>55706047
What's the point when the wiki exists?
>>
>>55706095
I don't think so. W series doesn't really have the modder base that the cheaper T series models do, and since the stock panels are so good, there's not much demand among the few who do own W series Thinkpads.

Technically speaking, you could get a 15" T60p. The -p suffix was the predecessor to the W series, and the T60p had 1400x1050 and 1600x1200 IPS panels. I imagine you want the W series primarily for the computing power though, so a ten-year-old Core Duo wouldn't quite fit the bill.

How much of an increase would an i7 2720qm for a t420 be over an i5 2520m because of the two extra cores?

I'm thinking of upgrading the CPU only because i think it's not enough (might be wrong though), the most notable example being the music player stuttering while running android studio + the android VM, sometimes even mpc-hc alone has little stutters. I'm running an 850 pro if it helps.

I know that the 2720qm might be housefire territory but i'll take the risk since i can get one for cheap, or maybe disable turbo boost if it helps in lowering the temps.

>>55707234
most don't have them since they unusually use the same planes from the 70s-90s
>>
>>55707315
The slot has a little extra headroom for the rails that you'd attach to the caddy. If you omit the caddy and rails, you could jam a 9.5mm drive in, but you'd better be sure that's what you want, because retrieving it won't be easy.

Hey guys,
My T520 recently stopped booting from the battery. It's fully capable of booting from AC, however. As soon as I remove the AC, however, it instantly shuts off.

When the battery is in and the computer is on, it seems as if the computer is detecting the battery (the brand, current charge percentage, etc.) just fine. It's shown as "charging", although the actual charge percentage doesn't change at all and the "time to full/empty" are both at 0 seconds.

So, two things:
First off, does it sound as if it's the battery that's dead, or is there perhaps some deeper issue here? Could something on the motherboard be fucked?

Secondly, if this is a battery issue, is there any chance that the battery is recoverable?
>>
>>55708205
The 8-bit guy did a video of rebuiling a battery pack, but not sure if that it's your problem.
I experimented that problem in a shitty ideapad I had a bit ago. It fixed itself.
>>
>>55708230
Thanks, I had totally forgotten about that video. I might end up doing that if I can isolate the issue to the battery in specific. I just hope there's not something fucked with the power supply circuit or something, although I'm not really sure how I'd go about diagnosing that.
>>
>>55707837
>not putting a X62 motherboard on it
Guess how much the X62 motherboard would cost to get in the States?

Hint: it's more than 1500 USD
>>
>>55708374
Why?
>>
>>55708401
Because it's made by chinks, in China.
>>
>>55708429
Only for that?
The motherboard actually is expected to cost around 320 USD.
>>
>>55708467
No, that's how much it would cost to buy it in China

But there's no pipeline for exporting it whatsoever, meaning you're going to have to convince some chink to ship it for you, and he's not going to do it unless you pay a lot of money

Top kek lenovo is doing a great job with the new models it seems. They took something and changed the exact thing that it differentiated itself from other laptops (the keyboard and just practicality in general). How long till x220 aren't viable anymore?

so do you use the t420 palmrest for that one or do you sand down the keyboard?
>>
>>55708578
>>55708618
CPU-wise, the --20 generation won't be going anywhere until x86 as a whole is obsolete. Sandy Bridge is stronk as fuck and Intel can't make anything significantly better even 5 years later. What actually puts the X220 at risk of obsolescence is the resolution and ports more than anything else. 1366x768 is hard enough to use already, imagine how bad it'll be when something like 4K is the new 1080p and 1080p is the new 1366x768. Expresscard can somewhat make up for lack of newer ports, but it's a stopgap at best. It can't even reach full USB 3.0 speeds, never mind things like Thunderbolt 3. If some new port were to replace USB Type-A one day, the X220 would be pretty much fucked.

That said, we're still a long ways off from these sorts of things happening. 5-10 years is probably even a bit of an underestimation. My T601F is still hanging in there, and its CPU is two generations older. I don't even see it becoming unusable anytime soon. With the Advanced Dock to keep graphics up to date and a good 1600x1200 IPS screen, this laptop is gonna keep kicking ass for years to come.
>>
>>55708823
Small question. Buying an i7 and underclocking it to i5 performance (of the same generation let's say) will provide better temps? I'm not sure how i5/i7 is marketed in the laptop (like i5 being 4 cores i7 being 4 cores 4 threads on desktop) so I hope you get my idea.

>>
>>55708823

Also my i5 2520m reaches 100c under load already unless i disable turbo boost. Dunno if it can get more housefire than that.
>>
>>55708863
Thankfully the X230 is almost exactly the same but with USB3 and a different keyboard (that can be replaced with X220 keyboard, so it's just a hard upgrade)
>>
>>55708866
underclocking does help with temp but imo not worth unless your doing some concurrent calculation shit

at 2nd gen i5 is duocore with hyper, at 6th gen i5 is quadcore no hyper
>>
>>55708924

to compensate for the heat the quadcore that he's using has a lower clockspeed than the i5

also it consumes 45w instead of 35w for the i5 so maybe you would have to buy a 90w power supply as well
>>
>>55708924
Still stuck with that resolution though. Sure, the 1080p mod exists, but it's about as viable as the X62 is.

They're around the same price, aren't they? Should be ~$300 for a good configuration for either model. Go for the T520, the 15" --20 Thinkpads feel way higher quality than the smaller ones.
>>
>>55709465
Not in this shithole, bro. The T520 are way overpriced.
And the X220 are overpriced here.
>>
>>55709465
I can't say it feels higher quality but it's certainly huge. Having a 520, it's been great and all for all these years, but isn't worth it unless you absolutely need that screen real estate to make up for how shit 16:9 is for doing work and fapping to doujins.

Maybe the T520 is different, but I've now owned two X220s, a T420s, a T420, and a W520, and the W520 makes the rest of them feel like Walmart specials. The gorgeous 1080p screen completely smokes the T420's garbage-quality panel and the X220's cramped resolution, the specs are strong and the cooling is stronger, and even the rougher plastic gives a feeling of higher quality compared to the smoothness of the T420/X220 exteriors. It feels like it's got more in common with the T60p than the T420. Which I guess makes sense, since the T60p is just a W series before it was called that. In any case, it's totally worth spending nearly twice as much as you would on a T420 to get a machine that is much more than twice as good.
>>
>>55708230
I'm a bit skeptical of rebuilding battery packs. The charge controller has basically decided "lol, all of the cells are fucked, just going to ignore them now".

So what's stopping it from continuing this line of thinking just because you replace the cells? I guess maybe just I don't understand how the charge controller works.
>>
>>55709649
Probably you're right and the controller of the thinkpad is more sophisticated than the controller of a 15 year old laptop.

The t520 has the w frame and all, but the specs are all over the place on most models. I built a midrange model with the 1600x900 display and most of the usual features, but the size makes it flex and the keyboard bends here and there. It doesn't feel cheap but it's definitely just a 420 with a bigger screen.

Most are going to have a big screen with shit resolution and a turd for a processor. Some are essentially w520's without the markup but it isn't easy to find one that way.

You know, I'm fucking sick and tired of faggots bitching about how they can't follow directions and patch the x230 EC for the battery auth and x220 keyboard. Even if you don't use chinkshit batteries, it's nice to be able to charge cheaper genuine x220 batteries. I'll try and cut out a few steps. Related:

http://www.file[lolniggers]dropper.com/patchedx230

Then:

8. Insert your USB stick and determine what device name it has.
This command should help you find the right device:

lsblk -d -o NAME,SIZE,LABEL

9. Write the bootable patched image onto the USB stick device

WARNING: if you do not have the right device name, you might overwrite
your hard drive!

sudo dd if=patched.x230.img of=/dev/sdb

Reboot and flash.

On an x200 the hardware flashing is very easy, because the BIOS chip is right under the palm rest.

On the t400 and t500, lenovo decided to put the BIOS chip under the magnesium cage, so you have to remove every single screw in the laptop to get to it, and replace the heatsink and thermal paste.

I fixed that design flaw with my rotary tool:

Got a x220, lately been getting the "touchpad jumping" issue.

Touchpad becomes jittery, moving sideways only, then not moving at all, the clit mouse quits working as well when this happens and it keeps jumping from selections as if the tab key is being held down. This happens under Windows and Linux, when the issue occurs its persistent no matter what OS, no matter if battery only or power plug in, I got the 65W one by the way.

But if I turn it off and come back to it say half a hour later, the issue goes away, will work as normal for about 10 to 15 mins.

I have made sure that the flex connector cables for both keyboard and touchpad are in properly and they appear to be, the issue goes away and then returns...

Anyone got any ideas?

It is true that 8GB is manageable for normal computing but using more than that isn't too hard either. X230 supports 16GB so why not max out? To save $30?

You mean that dusty X220 I posted or my current laptop (Acer 5051). Thankfully I have a desktop for 90% of my needs, the Acer is only for note taking in archives/libraries. The Acer itself is bit of a fire starter, it gets hot just when two programs.

It's not strictly a business-class laptop but it has an excellent keyboard (similar to a thinkpad) and I would be loathe to give it since it still works and I don't like spending money on something other than my desktop (I still need to upgrade my 6870)

I was thinking of putting a SSD in the optic drive bay of the Acer, see if that makes a difference for a 10 year old laptop.

anyone here with a w520 and a w530? is the gpu performance much better on the w530 or just a small performance increase? been looking for comparisons but i don't find that much

Any suggestions for cleaning your thinkpads? This one I just got is looking pretty manky, especially around the palmrest, keys and touchpad. I've already dismantled it to clear the dust and debris out but it still looks a mess.
It's an x220 if that matters for the plastics.

Any thinkpads with hackintosh here? I'm thinking about buying a T420 just for doing it.

You can do it, but you have to do a hardware flash.

Can someone explain the batteries to me? The battery in my T420 now has 3 humps but it's only six cells, and it is a stock lenovo one. Also the red circle sticker says 55++

I was looking on newegg and they have a 6 cell and 9 cell but the 6 cell doesn't have the 3 humps and the 9 cell does. Also they say 70++ on the sticker.

What does the red sticker number mean? Also should I buy the OEM 9 cell for from newegg $84 (CAD) or should I get a cheaper one from Amazon or elsewhere? I saw a 6 cell for $39 on Amazon

the red sticker is an arbitrary capacity rating iirc. I believe the 3 hump 6 cell uses hi cap batteries?

either way, for a t420, I'd just get a chink 9 cell off Amazon
>>
>>55720613
+ is 6 cell ++ is 9 cell
both 55 and 70 series batteries work in a t420, the 70 is compatible with the t/w*30 series' battery drm.

no, that's just their model numbering

this is right, 55 is from T420 era, 70 is from t430 era

genuine or Chinese battery? Genuines are like $65+ for a T430...

I know anon, I'll order the full set off chinkazon

soft rim is definitely the superior choice.

I heard people say the screens on the t430 and t420 have bad brightness and visibility, how noticable is this? Would it be worth getting a 440 or 530 just for that purpose?
>>
>>55720736
battery authentication can be easily bypassed by flashing the EC.
>>
>>55721000
T440 is shit, avoid it.
W530 is dank, but it's much bigger.
Personally my T430 with 1600x900 screen is acceptable. It's much better than the stock x220 screen.
>>
>>55721000
>>55721041

a 1600x900 T420/T430 panel is better than a x220 1366x768, but I'd take an x220 IPS over the T420 desu

but, the T420 TN panel really isn't unusable, it just has really, really narrow viewing angles and very low contrast. but it's no worse than budget laptops of the time period. if you're on a budget it's a good machine and it won't bother you much at all once you're used to it.

>>
>>55721089
>but it's no worse than budget laptops of the time period

How is this acceptable when the T420 was a premium machine and not some shitty Walmart special
>>
Is $120 a good price for this T420 (ID: 41786VU)?:
- 900p screen
- No HDD
- No Charger
- 9 cell battery (no idea how much charge still takes tho)
- i5-2520M, 4Gb RAM, Fingerprint Reader
- Looks fairly used, but nothing broken or overly spent (plenty of dust marks, no scratches, no broken plastic)
>>
>>55721303

Everything else about the machine (physical build quality, components, keyboard, etc) is top notch quality, but they skimped on the monitor to keep the overall price down when selling these things in bulk to businesses, mainly in the financial industry.

It's a business machine for Excel spreadsheets and MS Access, not photoshop and anime

it's still acceptable today because now you can buy one for around $175 and there's nothing that can match it in performance and reliability at that price point.
>>
>>55721408
it has the nvidia dGPU, its a good deal.
>>
>>55721408

4gb ram is usually fine because it'll be one 4gb card instead of 2 2 gb cards, so upgrading to 8gb is cost effective

no hard drive is fine because you should want to throw an SSD in anyway, although having the original HDD means you can just toss it in the ultrabay as a slave drive.

but, for $20-50 more you could get a less beat up one with all the components included. I'd either lowball or wait

Thanks guys, I found a T530 with a good price and 1600x900 screen, I think I will go for it.

Yeah, I already have an SSD shipped that I'll throw in it. Also the $120 is with shipping included.

So basically I'd have to buy a charger and a hdd cage, so $15-20 more. Idk if I can get a 900p with a 9-cell for that price anywhere.

So I just pulled the trigger on this w/ the docking station for € 159 (incl. shipping) - looks really clean on the photos and the seller made a good impression. Oh, and it's got a 120GB SSD, which is nice, because now I don't need to buy one myself. The only thing that kinda bothers me is the German QERTZ layout but I guess I'll just go along with it - I *am* German after all (but I prefer QERTY if given the choice).

I really have no need for it though - I'm going to put Gentoo on it (shuddup! I've been putting Gentoo on things before /g/ even existed) and use it on the rare occasions when I'm staying somewhere else and don't want to be restricted to my phone. Also, I might use it as portable retro console emulator - I already got a pair of USB SNES pads and literally the entire SNES and Genesis library.

What do you think? Anything I should know about Linux specific problems? What battery life can I expect when running a very bare bone system w/ Openbox and some basic panels?

This is what I'm going to rely on as starting point btw.: http://vminko.org/gentoo_manuals/thinkpad_x200

Thinkfan can help but battery life is awful without lenovo drivers, even on windows. I'd be surprised if the battery it comes with holds a charge for 2 hours.

I have a T420 with a 1366x798 display. Is there any easy way to upgrade the display? Like buying a higher resolution one and replacing it? Or is that more effort then it's worth
>>
>>55721971
I'm going to put a 9 cell battery from Lenovo in eventually. I guess I'll just have to wait and see...
>>
>>55721887
Tip: You can pull the cap off of the key and swap Y and Z, put your nail under the top and pull towards yourself. Dont worry, you wont break it. It's meant for cleaning.
>>
>>55721987
It's a little more difficult than changing ram senpai but doable in an hour if you know what you're doing first.

>>55722003
I just bought an x200 tablet for 80usd and the battery life is nonexistent. But I'm using it as a cintiq and don't need to unplug it so it isn't much of an issue.

What I do have a problem with is linux on a t520. On windows I get ~9 hours, on linux, maybe 4 with the 9 cell.

>>55722047
Oh they can break. Easily.
>>
>>55722072
Yes if you yank it like an idiot.
>>
>>55722072
Okay, I might look into it then. What is a good recommended screen to replace it with? And where would I find it? Should I just look for 1600x900 thinkpad screens on ebay? Or can I find 1920x1080 as well
>>
>>55722131
If you look up your serial you can find the fru codes and search them. Most of the panels are on amazon at a decent price. I should really look into it myself, but I have a 520 so it tops out a little higher resolution.

Sure looks easy enough. Z and Y are the least of my problems though - I'm much more concerned about brackets, @, #, \, and all that jazz. Switching *those* keys would be really confusing and doesn't make much sense either way.
