IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Do most thinkpads suffer from very dim displays? My X60t is barely visible on its brightest. Don't remember it being this dim when I put it into storage. Was thinking of getting a X201t as an upgrade.

nah, you see, I want to switch to a linux distro.

In my future work I might heavily rely on this OS so I might as well start ahead of my colleague competitors.

I will use w10 with all normie stuff on one boot and linux with all "le 1337 h4XX0r" stuff on the linux distro.

A colleague suggested linux mint. is it any good?

That is a hella difference. Might actually consider getting that x201t. I I had the screen replaced anyways so don't know it that might be the problem. Thanks for sharing that photo.
>>
>>55688119
The old ones do because they're CCFL backlit. They started switching to LED backlights sometime around the --00 generation.

I know I'm definitely in the minority but I actually prefer the CCFL backlights. I spend 11 hours a day working under harsh LED lights, last thing I want when I get home is to be blasted with more of that out of the one thing that brings me some amount of enjoyment in life.
>>
>>55688933
Use f.lux, it really helps.
>>
Is there any advantage having the Nvidia NVS 5400M over the Intel HD 4000 on the T430 for light gaming? Let's say Portal 2 and stuff like that.
>>
>>55688119
CCFL and LED backlights ALL lose brightness over time
>>
>>55689249
Performance will be slightly better. I doubt it's worth the additional heat and reduced battery life, though.
>>
>>55689268
Battery life is not a concern, but I can't say the same about heat, will it be running a lot hotter?

At the moment I have a T61, that I had to buy on a budget, now I have a little more money and I'm looking at T430/T420 laptops, and I ask this because I like to play not-to-modern games, maybe the most modern would be GTA IV. Would the T420 be able to handle it, or the T430 would be a better option?

Flashing the Embedded controller is a very precise thing. The GitHub guy rewrote the ROM so that the *20 keyboard would correspond to things that the *30 would expect. If you want to remap specific keys, you're looking at SharpKeys or the DCS Remapper I posted.

No. You might lose 5 or so fps, just that.
>>
>>55689932
I gained almost 20 fps in gta 5 going from my oced 4670k to a similarly clocked i7 4790k
so yeah, there's a huge difference in the real world (not sterile benchmark land)
>>
I've been reading the buying guides and whatnot about getting an x220. The guides I found had varying prices for one, bottoming between 150 and 300. Searching on ebay brings up dozens in the 150 range.

Any verdict on a reasonable(neither the bottom nor the top) x220 price?
>>
>>55689932
CPU is definitely a game bottleneck, though it's more about threads than single core performance these days. My T601F+Advanced Dock setup chokes like a bitch in Metal Gear Rising even on the lowest possible settings. My W520 has a weaker GPU and it handles the game just fine at 1080p. Most other games perform very similarly between the two laptops, it's just a few cases where two threads is simply not enough.
>>
>>55689952
That seems odd.
>>
>>55689982
expect to pay between 200 and 250 for most x220s
obviously the $200 ones will be bottom of the line x220s, and the ones for ~$250 will be the higher end ones.
what's usually the best deal is to get one without ram or hard drive for $100, then buy new ram and a 256 gig ssd for ~$100-150 more and have a killer thinkpad.
>>55690010
that's because you are used to looking at benchmarks online where they kill all background tasks.
they don't have anything (like a youtube video or skype) in the background.

honestly though it's in bad shape, the monitor died a couple years ago and i've had it hooked up to a shitty external, and the case is fucked up all to hell. still worked fine otherwise though

the updated fhd screen without a digitizer on it was hard as fuck to find though, i had to pay $200 for it on ebay. the first panel that ends in spb1 has ghosting problems

So, yesterday I plugged a usb 3 harddrive in and transferred some files onto my t420s. The speeds only got up to 100mb/s, which is a fifth or so of what usb 3.0 should be capable of. Can I test somehow if everything is installed correctly and for maximum performance? lsusb tells me there is a usb 3.0 port so the system at least knows about that.

I mean I can use it, but can I use it faster?

Oh and nevermind the 3 folders in the panel, I cracked my screen at the top right corner and had to make the things I wanted to be visible move to the left...

It seems that high-end technology nowadays is built by faggots for retards, and I prefer something that's built by engineers for businessmen or other engineers. So, I went buttmad and seriously decided to grab a x20X for travels and build a regular PC for everything else, when I'm home.
I need something that has a big ass-buttery life and is as portable as possible. So far I've decided to go with a tablet (portabile), with an outdoor screen (400 nit), a few 9-cell butteries, 3G module to have the internet anywhere, max out the ram, get an SSD. Also, I'd like to have a sleeve like on the pic, but they aren't even on ebay. Use cases are: checking e-mail, mild browsing, mild programming (high severity ad-hoc bug fixing), some text editing, fixing stuff over ssh, interfacing industrial equipment, chatting, reading.
I got quite used to instantly responding computers, would everything just lag on gnulinux with no DM? Is x200t much slower than x201t? How's the buttery life for both models? x220t is more retarded, but how much better is it in terms of performance and buttery life? Will it survive if I spill a flu medicine on it (happened to my HP 4540s on one event half a year ago, still werks after proper cleaning)? 10 hours of moderate usage is possible on one charge? For how long do you think these thinkpads would last? I'd like not to change anything for 5 years or so.
Thank you.

It's not based on gt 630. Notebookcheck states it's similar in performance to gt 630, but it doesn't mean it's based on it. Also nvs cards have to types of drivers: certified ones (meant to be used with CAD software) and performance ones (gaymes). Performance drivers are much, much faster. It's also overclocked and it's the 2GB model.
So yes, GTA V works fine at 40FPS+ and you can basically kill yourself. I had the same setup year ago and it was also completely fine (except it was a 1GB model)

What is the best way to use my 3TB 3.5in desktop HDD on a thinkpad?

Some sort of USB hub? Which one?

Should I just buy one of them dock things with the sata slot at the back?

I'm really struggling with only 3 usb slots on the thinkpad, at home I'm always using 2 for wired mouse and wired keyboard already, I wanna be able to come home and plug stuff in so I have far more space than I do now, but just using an external hdd would use up the third and final USB, so I don't know if I should buy a dock, a USB hub, an HDD caddy, two of these, or what

When buying new, it's almost always cheaper to get the smallest amount of RAM and upgrade it yourself.

For used laptops, it would be pretty hard to judge whether the price would be different for 4GB vs. 16GB since there are many other factors. I guess you could look at the RAM prices and see if it will be cheaper overall to upgrade it yourself.

fuck me, what do? The company that I bought it through Newegg has horrid reviews on returning items, i want to cry
>>

MBPR is MacBook Pro? If so, then it does sound like a good idea. I'm considering downgrading my computer setup because it's much more than I need, which I didn't realize when buying it.
>>
>>55702026
yeah no shit, anything from the past decade should not have any problems playing anime
>>
>>55702119

Why dont you go with that sketchy guy and tell him to steal your friends T420 soy you can buy it
>>
>>55702179

The presets of the codec pack varies from specs i tried it on a t520 with nvs 4200 and another laptop with 755m, both with i7 qm, and the t520 was only getting hot and showing less frames, i guess i should use vlc if i want the w520

Do genuine 9 cell thinkpad batteries deteriorate just as fast as cheap thirdparty batteries?

Mine lost 50% of its capacity in 4 months, lmao
>>
>>55703312
I have two genuine Panasonic 9cells for my T601F. One has been in use since 2008, has over 400 cycles, and is degraded to around 75% of factory capacity. The other was first used in 2007 and only has 34 cycles on it, with 93% of its factory capacity remaining. I think Panasonic cells are exceptionally durable though, even among genuine batteries. I've gotten multiple Thinkpads with genuine Sanyo batteries that are completely dead despite being no more than 5 years old and having only around 200-300 cycles.

>>55697365
I would only need a ssd for the OS and Programms, so it just should be fast, thats the only priority
I dont need a hdd right now but it would be nice to have the option to add one later on

Another question : is a x230 louder with hdd or dont you really hear it because of the Fan noise?
>>
>>55703710
x230 usually never spins up the fan unless you load the CPU to at least 50%.
IB CPUs are much, much cooler than the sandy bridge trash from x220. HDD will be the only loud element in it.

Just picked this up at the start of my summer term.

It feels surprisingly sturdy for a new TP, my only complaint is the top cover obviously doesn't have the classic rubberized paint, so it scratches easier.

Dualbooting Windows and Debian, CE major.

Model?

My hard drive in my t420 is louder then it's fan is.

Is viable using a non tablet X61 as secondary and portability minded machine this days?

Thanks for the replies then i'll ditch the hdd until I absolutely need a more space

My x220 finally came in! And it's even better than I had imagined! I really thought that when I was buying it that I was about to be memed on pretty hard, but this keyboard is wonderful and the build of the laptop is so solid feeling!

Thank you so much 4chan, I would never known about this cute little laptop without you guys <3

X201s is cuter, but I can't fault you for picking the much more common and cost-effective option. Welcome to the cult, anon.
>>
>>55704248
I hope not to be in want of the same sentiments upon the arrival of my t420 next week.
>>
>>55704248
Now you will be painfully aware of how shitty every other laptop keyboard is.
>>
>>55704477
This. The only laptop with a better keyboard that i have ever personally used is a PowerBook G4.

at least it's the i7 so it's bearable
the i5 model made me want to shoot myself.

>>
>>55705047
The i7s are 25W, so just LV, not ULV. Places them just slightly behind standard voltage i5s of the generation, and still a good bit ahead of Penryn Core 2 Duos.
>>
>>55705050
I'm gonna fix them or just peel them off once it gets here. Hate that shit.

Is the Chiclet keyboard on the X230-260 really that much worse
>>
>go on to EPP
>Authentication Failed

>>
>>55705269
from what I've heard they are more tactile and feel better than the older keyboards
they just have a retarded layout which is what makes them bad.
>>
>>55705269
No, actually the switches are better.
The problem is the mac-esque layout mostly.
>>
What's /tpg/'s opinion on other Lenovo products. I'm looking at a thinkcenter desktop on craigslist for $65. 3.06GHZ C2D, 4GB of Ram. The HDD is irrelevant, as I'd be taking it out.

The idea is to get it for a small headless media server. I'm not sure about how well it can expand in the future though.

Thoughts?
>>
>>55705269
i have both, the new ones feel better to type on than the old ones, but have a shittier layout. also the backlit keyboards arent as good as the non backlit ones
>>
>>55705269
I personally prefer the keyboard on my T420 over my T460p.

But the newer keyboard feels more solid, and I can imagine most people preferring it.

Just ordered my lelNOvo MemePad T420 BlazeitFgt. $190 on newegg. I5.
>>
>>55705333
>>55705377

I actually prefer the new layout becasue it's more similar to my (rather standard) desktop keyboard layout.

Except for the the top row/rows, which is a single row now instead of the superior semi-dual row.

The X200s palmrest can be swapped onto the X201s, right? I want to be truly free from trackpads.
>>
If i have no interest in using my optical drive can i just remove it and put some kind of cover on
>>
>>55705779
Get an HDD caddy. You don't have to put an HDD in it, could just use it as a little storage drawer.
>>
>>55705786
store all my tendies, plug in the laptop and block the fan

boom cooked tendies without mummy

>>55705622
yeah, but why would you want to?

Mischievous.

>>55705830
Because I disable the trackpad anyway and it's ugly.

Why laptop batteries degenerate so fast compared to phone ones? And why they are so expensive?
