Do most thinkpads suffer from very dim displays? My X60t is barely visible on its brightest. Don't remember it being this dim when I put it into storage. Was thinking of getting a X201t as an upgrade.

The old ones do because they're CCFL backlit. They started switching to LED backlights sometime around the --00 generation.

I know I'm definitely in the minority but I actually prefer the CCFL backlights. I spend 11 hours a day working under harsh LED lights, last thing I want when I get home is to be blasted with more of that out of the one thing that brings me some amount of enjoyment in life.

Flashing the Embedded controller is a very precise thing. The GitHub guy rewrote the ROM so that the *20 keyboard would correspond to things that the *30 would expect. If you want to remap specific keys, you're looking at SharpKeys or the DCS Remapper I posted.

CPU is definitely a game bottleneck, though it's more about threads than single core performance these days. My T601F+Advanced Dock setup chokes like a bitch in Metal Gear Rising even on the lowest possible settings. My W520 has a weaker GPU and it handles the game just fine at 1080p. Most other games perform very similarly between the two laptops, it's just a few cases where two threads is simply not enough.

and it's one of the BAD serials, too, the ones that everyone said to stay away from, and it made it this long. i honestly thought the hard drive would die before the GPU did at this point.

honestly though it's in bad shape, the monitor died a couple years ago and i've had it hooked up to a shitty external, and the case is fucked up all to hell. still worked fine otherwise though

the updated fhd screen without a digitizer on it was hard as fuck to find though, i had to pay $200 for it on ebay. the first panel that ends in spb1 has ghosting problems

I had an R61 die on me when a glass of water was spilled on it. Ordered a T400 for $50 and got two machines out of that mess. Then the R61 rez'd itself; doesn't turn off properly, but that's fine since it sits in the common area.

So, yesterday I plugged a usb 3 harddrive in and transferred some files onto my t420s. The speeds only got up to 100mb/s, which is a fifth or so of what usb 3.0 should be capable of. Can I test somehow if everything is installed correctly and for maximum performance? lsusb tells me there is a usb 3.0 port so the system at least knows about that.

I mean I can use it, but can I use it faster?

It seems that high-end technology nowadays is built by faggots for retards, and I prefer something that's built by engineers for businessmen or other engineers. So, I went buttmad and seriously decided to grab a x20X for travels and build a regular PC for everything else, when I'm home.
I need something that has a big ass-buttery life and is as portable as possible. So far I've decided to go with a tablet (portabile), with an outdoor screen (400 nit), a few 9-cell butteries, 3G module to have the internet anywhere, max out the ram, get an SSD. Also, I'd like to have a sleeve like on the pic, but they aren't even on ebay. Use cases are: checking e-mail, mild browsing, mild programming (high severity ad-hoc bug fixing), some text editing, fixing stuff over ssh, interfacing industrial equipment, chatting, reading.
I got quite used to instantly responding computers, would everything just lag on gnulinux with no DM? Is x200t much slower than x201t? It's not based on gt 630. Notebookcheck states it's similar in performance to gt 630, but it doesn't mean it's based on it. Also nvs cards have to types of drivers: certified ones (meant to be used with CAD software) and performance ones (gaymes). Performance drivers are much, much faster. It's also overclocked and it's the 2GB model.
So yes, GTA V works fine at 40FPS+ and you can basically kill yourself. I had the same setup year ago and it was also completely fine (except it was a 1GB model)

For used laptops, it would be pretty hard to judge whether the price would be different for 4GB vs. 16GB since there are many other factors. I guess you could look at the RAM prices and see if it will be cheaper overall to upgrade it yourself.

I have two genuine Panasonic 9cells for my T601F. One has been in use since 2008, has over 400 cycles, and is degraded to around 75% of factory capacity. The other was first used in 2007 and only has 34 cycles on it, with 93% of its factory capacity remaining. I think Panasonic cells are exceptionally durable though, even among genuine batteries.
