IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

My T440p is kind of bulky and heavy, so I've been looking into some smaller and lightweight Thinkpad to carry with me to school and work

Is used X220 for 220 Eur the best choice here? Or is there something even smaller I should take a look at?
>>
>>55723316
How do you deal with the shitty ass touchpad. I couldn't bear it so i gave it to my mom
>>
Lightning hit my phone line a few days ago, and it seems to have given my X220 a little surge damage: the ethernet port no longer works (I had it plugged into the router, obviously), and the touchpad now jitters around like crazy if I attempt to use it, even if I don't move my finger. Just using a wireless connection and the trackpoint now.
Haven't found any other problems yet, and so far it seems to otherwise work as normal (I'm actually posting this from it).
Should it still be safe to use?
How difficult would it be to replace the damaged parts?

Got an X230T recently
First time dealing with a "new" """""Thinkpad"""""

The hardware quality relative to my X200T is complete shit. Feels almost like a downgrade in many ways.

I'm not even going to mention the keyboard (which I know can be replaced with an X220).

Can't believe people pay MSRP for these new gen shitpads. Also can't believe just how low Gookovo has let the line sink, slapping a Thinkpad logo on pretty much anything

Care to explain?

So my T420 came with 4gb of DDR3 1333 ram. If I wanted to upgrade, could I use DDR3 1600? The specifications for the processor (i5 2540m) say it supports 1066 and 1333.

I don't know a lot about ram, is 1600 just not compatible? Or would it be compatible but bottlenecked?
>>
>>55723878

use 2 rams on dual channel so you have 2666mhz, you will not notice a much though
>>
>>55723833
I have one too and off the top of my head, the keystroke is deeper, the screen doesn't wobble or flex, the plastic is thicker has a better finish and a better feel overall, the buttons are substantial and don't look like ass, it doesn't bend and warp when you pick it up, a gloss screen goes a long way towards something not looking like shit and it doesn't feel hollow or make a tinny sound when you tap the palmrest.

Worth noting is that it all feels like a downgrade from older models, which feel like a downgrade from the model M keyboard, which is a massive downgrade from the selectric which is a 20 pound hunk of american steel with keys like the trigger pull of an italian shotgun linked to an orgasmic gearwork powered by a 10 horsepower electric motor.
>>
>>55723878
>If I wanted to upgrade, could I use DDR3 1600?
Yes but it will run at 1333, I'm using 2x 8gb 1600mhz DDR3L sticks right now.

>Or would it be compatible but bottlenecked?
This, iirc a custom bios lets you run the ram at 1600.

Is there even a point getting an msata ssd for a Thinkpad like the X230T that doesn't have a 6GB/s port for it (not that I'm going to saturate 6GB/s anyway)

Battery tiers:
>FREE BATTERY IF ELIGIBLE - https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/hf004122

>New geunine lenovo - most expensive but more durable and dependable compared to the chinese counterparts. If money is no object, buy new.

>Used/refurbished genuine Lenovo - on a budget, these have all the benefits of new batteries, just with some wear. Only buy used batteries from sellers that will screencap battery stats (charged vs original design capacity, cycle count) so you know what you're getting. Usually price is on-par with high quality third party batteries.

>High quality 3rd party battery - anker & denaq both use jap/korean 18650 cells and are thus known to wear well. Worth considering at this price point. Some models (XX30 and up) will not charge 3rd party batteries, so avoid outright.

>New chinese batteries - reviews are mixed but most use sub-par cells and electronics. They may die unexpectedly or wear much faster than genuine lenovo batteries. Others seem to work fine. There are a million brands and batches out there, so there's no way to tell which is better than another, if they are.

>used chinese or unknown capacity used lenovo - reconsider your life choices that led you to this destitute position
>>
>>55726797

No, unless you're talking about some ancient collector-tier model that has a very unsophisticated charge controller.

Or yes if you're an EE, can break the case open without destroying it, are comfortable spot welding tabs on fragile/explosive li-ion cells, and have the equipment to hardware-interface with the charge controller.

Senpais, I've found a X220 for €120 in expensive potatoland, I could maybe knock it down to €100-120.

The exterior is fucked with scruffs and scratches but apparently the interior is ok and it works. It's an i5-25-20M model. The seller describes it as a "refurbished ex lease business computer"

If I bought it, the first thing I should do is put 8GB and a SSD in it, right?

I have an Acer 5051, a 2006 era laptop that has a Thinkpad style keyboard (minus the trackpoint). I like it because it's the last of its era of being a serious, well-built business laptop before the shite-tier built laptops have flooded the market.

But it is heavy (2.2Kg), it's CPU is weak and a fire starter and if it wasn't for Linux it would be obsolete by now. I'm not sure upgrading from a 2006 to a 2010 laptop is a good move. But the current model Lenevo X250 is too expensive in Ireland (€800-1200) and ultrabooks look too cheaply made.

Advanced Dock is GOAT, how much did yours cost? Mine was $40 but it came locked without keys, so I had to drill the lock open. It's ugly, but the dock is positioned so that that side is pretty much never visible. Listings for unlocked docks with keys were around $100, so I'd say it was worth it.

Also, why not run both screens at once? You should be able to do that quite comfortably, although you won't be able to use the eGPU on the internal screen.
>>
>>55732619
I got mine for ÂŁ30. Laptop was ÂŁ90 without upgrades. Dock came unlocked with keys. I can't run the eGPU at the moment just because of space restraints. I'm staying at my girlfriend's house over the summer so I have little space. On that note a monitor fits nicely on the back of the dock.

How do you keep your gpu cool? Mine runs hellishly hot under load (70C). The CPU is under load in that speccy so that's pretty great.

Very happy with the performance though.

Might want to try replacing the thermal paste? Mine's a bit weird about cooling too, in that the exhaust fan in the dock seems to be a total sperg. It'll prepare for takeoff with something as minor as moving the mouse around in Steam. For a while I thought it was the GPU fan, but I set that to 100% in MSI Afterburner once and it was really quiet. The exhaust fan somehow knows how loaded the GPU is and spins up and down accordingly. It's not based on temperature, as I've heard it go nuts when the GPU is only around 35C, but do nearly nothing when it's up at 60.

I always boot in the dock, then eject if I need it somewhere else. Booting while ejected and then docking results in a lockup every time for me.

Honestly I can't tell any major improvements from the overclocking, but I think games are staying smooth more consistently now. The GPU doesn't seem to be the bottleneck at all in this setup, it's almost always the CPU that gives out first. It's a nice change of pace from internal Thinkpad GPUs, which are almost always far weaker than the powerful CPUs they're paired with.

>>55733096
I got the GPU from eBay but it's only been used for hometheatre as far as I know. No reason why the paste should need replaced. I've had a similar experience with the fan in the PCI-E slot. It spins up randomly for like a second intermittently and barely spins up fully even when under load. I've never found a way to control it.

Whenever I boot with the laptop in the dock it doesn't work at all. If I get past the boot screen and dock it before windows loads up the GPU isn't recognised. I have to hot dock it or only ever put it in sleep mode for the GPU to work.

I've mostly had the GPU being the bottleneck with a few exceptions. I think the P9500 may outperform your T9300 a bit. I get amazing temps for my CPU (maximum 48C under load) too.

The most powerful CPU we can fit is the T9900 I think. When I retire this laptop from portable use (for uni) I may get one. It'll kill the battery life though.

Have you ever used a HDD in the ultrabay port in the dock? I'm worried it'll push me over the power limit.

>>55732949
$50 for a T400 is pretty darn good. It'll still do you for most things. It's only really the GPU that's the problem if you put an SSD in.

>>
>>55733214
I got mine new, so that would probably explain the difference in temperature. Can't hurt to try.

I'd guess the difference in docking behavior is down to some chipset/motherboard difference between my T601F and your T400.

>I get amazing temps for my CPU (maximum 48C under load) too.
Really? Under maximum load? That's crazy, my T9300 stays under 70C in most cases but 48C is closer to its idle temperature. It's sitting at 46C right now and I'm always running the fan at full speed.

Since this is a T601F and not a T400, the best I can do is an X9000, which would be completely retarded to get because it costs like $150 and is only a 300MHz increase over my T9300.

I've used the dock's Ultrabay for my HDD a few times before, it works just fine. The R7 240 is a really low-power card, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

I don't like the X220 or T420 much, but fuck off with your misinformation. They don't overheat unless the thermal paste is fucked up. They get hot, sure, but that's not the same as overheating. Even an X220 rarely goes over 90C, and the CPU is safe up to 100C. The T420 gets toasty on the inside, but externally it remains fairly cool, even with the Nvidia housefire GPU. The X220 does get hot on the outside, but not so hot you'll burn yourself or anything. I'm a goddamn pansy when it comes to heat and neither laptop bothered me in that regard.

I guess the X9000 would be really useful in some very particular tasks. Single core performance is pretty bad though so you'd be looking at worse performance in most things anyway.

Alright thanks. I just wanted to know before I ordered a (surprisingly expensive) HDD caddy for the ultrabay.

My temperature difference on the CPU is down to the processor being a 25W TDP chip. That and I believe the T400 has great cooling. Mine has never been unnaturally hot except when I ran the dGPU at 100% for extended periods. I get about 30C idle on my P9500 whilst in the dock with the eGPU, which obviously takes some of the heat out of the laptop.

>>55733675

It's not IPS, but the 1080p panel is one of the best TNs ever made.

Does that go for the 1080p TN panel for the 510?

I think so, but I can't say for sure. I have a T510 with the 900p panel and it's still really good, way better than the trash in the T420.

then just buy a fully specced out p70 then

there's a reason why the op tells people to specify a price, so we can determine if you buy used or new

If you don't like it, you should leave. And then kill yourself.

No maybe yes, as long as it stays below Tj it won't melt, but I wouldn't want it to hit that high temps regularily.

Only reason my X220 (house fire edition) got that high was that I was testing its limits. Fan at minimum and compiling only gets it to ~80-85, actually hammering the cores with unrealistic jobs managed to push it above 95. With more sane settings in thermald I'm not seing anything higher than 70 no matter what I do.

Got a second hand T450s for around 700$, upgraded it to an 960gb SSD

I'm currently dual booting windows 10 and Arch linux, best of both worlds. It's really comfy but getting it installed in UEFI mode was a bit of a pain

I love my W520 so much (had it since it realeased) that I want to get my sister who is starting college a "new" laptop and I've decided that the T520 is the best for her, she doesn't need a particularly powerful machine, just a competent one that won't be too slow.
Find one for around $200-$300, get more RAM up to 8GB, see what HDD she has in there, and then swap out the disc drive (if there is one) for a SSD.
Should be able to handle facebooking + MS office right?
>>
>>55736242
It's not so much video games in general, it's just that you are buying a thinkpad with the intent to play video games.
>>
>>55736395
So?
Should I get another laptop just to play games?
If thinkpad can handle gayming enough for my needs, why not?

My T430 handles GTA V very nicely (60FPS and everything set to medium/high). Should I stop playing on it because some fat neckbeards on /g/ tells me to?
>>
>>55736428
you can play gta v with the intel hd4000 at 60 fps?

>>55736185

>>
>>55736428
If you really want to play videogames, then do it and don't listen to this neck beard.
It's just that thinkpads are not intended for videogame use, sure it runs nice with a Quaddro but you'll be overpaying a lot if video games are very important for you.

>>
>>55736395
He didn't say he bought the thing to play video games, just wanted to know which drivers would be best for it. He could have had the Thinkpad for quite some time and just now decided he wants to see what it can handle. It's a stretch, but I didn't buy my T60 to play games, and now it's my primary computer with the most powerful GPU in the house. Sure, I could build a desktop easily and get all the performance I could ever ask for, but I'm at home on a Thinkpad. Plus, there's just something very satisfying about using a jacked-up ten-year-old business laptop to beat the pants off plebs that think they're hot shit because they ordered a build off logicalincrements.

i have an x301 i wanna use entirely for seeding which means i'll have to have it always open and always running. what should i do other than bare minimum installation of programs (win7, utorrent), keep bottom elevated, and screen always dimmed to ensure it lasts the longest and has least amount of strain on the components

Anyone here actually replaced the thermal paste on the X61T? I heard that I have to take the whole thing apart. I got as far as unscrewing the monitor off but the wires are still attached to the motherboard and I can't figure out how to detach them. There's literally only 1 video with shit quality showing the disassembly and this is the part I'm stuck at
https://youtu.be/h3vQ8Q-zgZM?t=222
I know how to take out the tiny white plug but the larger plug I can't figure out how to get out.

I think my X201 might need the thermal paste replaced but I'm not sure...I've never replaced it before but I also hadn't used a laptop 100% before a few years ago. Before that, desktops only and no thermal paste after the initial application.

So the X201 is about 5-6 years old, Core i5 M560 2.67GHz. I've had it for about two years, running Arch + XFCE with really no problems other than overheating. When I have a normal set of applications running it's fine, like up to 15 Firefox tabs + Chrome occasionally + Spotify + Atom + a few terminals.

If I add any kind of video to that mix, it doesn't matter if flash/html5/mkv in VLC, it will jack the temp up to 85 and if I try to do too many things at once the fucker will shut down. Video makes it hit 75-80C, and then I have to be really careful about what else I'm doing. Encoding mp3s from WAV or FLAC any longer than 80 minutes is impossible. If I try to do two albums back to back, it will shut down at 95C. Is there anything I can do before trying new thermal paste?

definitely rtorrent. It has a slick web UI so you never have to physically touch the laptop if you're just using it for seeding. why don't you just get a cheap seedbox though?
