Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

So I would like to port my game on Linux before launch. I already spent months choosing the right libraries (or rather lack of), but I still have to identify the last Linux-specific issues.
If anyone wants to help porting more Linux games, here is the stuff.

I'm making a game where you control nanomachines (small robots) by creating Artificial Intelligences made of graphical symbols.

Known issues:

Installing lsb-release fixes it.

I'm looking for more Linux-specific issues to identify (and fix), so every feedback about non working stuff is welcomed.

>>55662772
>you get to sift through an unsorted mess where things like games that are preinstalled with Debian 8 are scrambled in with maintanence tools such as the fucking thing you have to check how much hard drive space you have. It's unorganized.

You're referring to part A of pic related. But who the fuck actually uses the list of applications to run things regularly? Everyone I know either searches (see part B) or uses a dock with shortcuts (not pictured, but can easily be done). Also you can enable a pseudo start menu via gnome-tweak-tool (see part C).

GNOME masterrace (just kidding, but it's actually good)

Somewhat agree, but 3 is very polished at this point, and you can configure it to work pretty much how you want (and I'm running 3.14), via regular settings and the tweak tool. I like how the super key bindings all work very similarly to Windows out of the box, mostly for maximizing and "snapping" windows to one half of the screen.

The game engine is actually done to run a god game: start with one nanomachine, devour the environment and transform the planet into a giant spaceship.

I cut down lot of functionalities for this first game, but there is a long term project involving thousands of nanomachines working at the same time.
Pic related is a timelapse with one million nanomachines (real time 2 hours), running on my 2006 computer.

A few settings you'll definitely want:

set nocompatible " Disables vi compatibility mode, which is pretty useless nowadays
filetype plugin indent on " Enable filetype detection and indentation
syntax on " Enable syntax highlighting
set number " Show line numbers
set hidden " Allow for hidden buffers
set ttyfast " because nobody is using a slow terminal in this century
set textwidth=n " Set word wrap line length

Setting up some command aliases to run git commands from vim is extremely useful as well. The possibilities are endless.

Guys, I'm trying to write a Debian ISO to a usb using dd with

dd if=firmware-8.5.0-amd64-netinst.iso of=/dev/sdd

And it seems to finish okay with

544768+0 records in
544768+0 records out
278921216 bytes (279 MB, 266 MiB) copied, 139.809 s, 2.0 MB/s

output. But alas, when I open it in gparted just to check, I get greeted by a message saying "Libparted Warning: The driver descriptor says the physical block size is 2048 bytes, but Linux says it is 512 bytes." with the options to either Cancel or Ignore.

How can I fix this? If I click Cancel it just shows me the empty 2GB USB, but if I click Ignore it shows me the USB with Debian but seemingly 7 GB of space. What gives?

Is this fixable by using sync as an argument with dd or what?

The installers for Testing and SId aren't for actually installing Debian. They're for testing the installers themselves. It says so on the site and the wiki.

Just get your stuff from here

https://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/

or here if you want non-free firmware out of the box

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/8.5.0+nonfree/amd64/iso-cd/

I recommend the latter

>>
>>55670968
>google
>>
>>55670936
Fantastic for servers. Kind of a pain to use on desktops because of old software, but definitely doable if you don't care about that. But you're very likely to, seeing as the mpv in stable is so old that it doesn't work for streams and whatnot, and there is no official backport for it so you have to make your own, and that's pretty hellish. It's just comfier to upgrade to testing or sid and not have to worry about anything (except of course paying attention to what aptitude is upgrading or removing when you tell it to)

Protip, install apt-listbugs when you're on Testing or Sid so that when you are ugrading software, it warns you of any critical bugs that have been reported, so you can decide whether to upgrade now or hold off.

So guys, I have an old laptop whose Wi-Fi card I thought was dead.

But now while installing Debian, I noticed that it *did* detect the card, install the correct iwlwifi drivers, and could even detect networks during install. It just couldn't connect to my home network.

Is there any hope for it that I could diagnose it when Debian is finished installing (did it with ethernet), or is that sign that it's probably dead and I'm just getting false hopes?

No but you're most likely going to want to remove one when you pick your favorite, and at that point if you try to uninstall it, you may break your computer a little bit to the point that you can't login.

As to your earlier question, Gnome is much more stable and simple, more widely used. KDE has more options and configurations possible, but it's less stable.

Unity is worth trying out for a while as well(if you're on Ubuntu). It's like Gnome with more free screen space and many keyboard commands enabled by default.

I would just like to interject for one moment. The operating system you are suggesting for me to install, and rather commandingly might I add, will in fact, not directly solve my current problem at hand, and will actually cause me to ask further questions about the difficult process involved in installing it. Gentoo is a very nice operating system itself, but I'd rather you directly assist me in my quest to solve my current predicament.

I understand that many computer users run the Gentoo Linux operating system, and I realize they may enjoy it greatly and are not currently experiencing the current problem that I have whilst using my non-Gentoo operating system. Through a peculiar turn of events, I have noticed an enormous amount of users make the "Install Gentoo" suggestion, but many of its users are not aware that this suggestion, in most cases, is actually not an "easy-fix" to every single computer-related error.

There really are reasons for installing Gentoo, and there are people using it, but it is just for the few users who choose to compile their own source code locally according to their chosen configuration. Gentoo is just another operating system: the problems I am experiencing will not undeviatingly be solved if I make the choice to install it. All these so-called "Install Gentoo" suggestions I am noticing should cease immediately.

So I installed Tahrpup 6.0.5 using LICK, and and it's saved in Windows with its own ext4 partition to save files in. Periodically (It's only happened when I force shutdown my pc while booting Windows) I'll load into PuppyLinux and it'll say that "Windows has hibernated NTFS partition" or something like that. The only way to fix it is to reboot, load windows, reboot again, then load Puppy.

Is there a way I can either stop windows from hibernating the partition, or move Puppy into the ext4 partition?

As far as I know, LXDE is on a development freeze and still on GTK2 with no plans to support GTK3 because the dev didn't like it, which is the reason of LXQT's existence too. I'm a bit worried about installing it and then having to stop using it later because of that.

neither

systemd or http://man.cat-v.org/plan_9/8/init

go bloat or go home
>>
>>55677074
I wouldn't worry. LXDE's been around for a while. And even if you had to remove it in the future, it has such a small footprint that you're not likely to have any dependency hell issues as if you were going to remove GNOME or something.

emacs is already a full os

systemd is well on its way to outright incorporating the kernel...

Ever since I started using a tiling wm I stopped configuring it. Only added mpv to the list of programs starting in floating mode and changed color and font once.

You could learn a little bit of python. It's not much different than bash scripting, but ofc more powerful.

Please avoid using the term “photoshop” as a verb, meaning any kind of photo manipulation or image editing in general. Photoshop is just the name of one particular image editing program, which should be avoided since it is proprietary. There are plenty of free programs for editing images, such as the GIMP.
>>
>>55680896
If you stop using the word Photoshop for image manipulation I will consider it.

Staring at this and gruvbox for only a few minutes makes my eyes tear up. Hot colors on a dark background is painful to look at.
Are the the people who use these programming wizards who write code for only a few minutes?
