I found this knife when out for a walk. Is there a good way to get rid of the rust? This is only on the surface and the steel underneath looks fine. Can I get advice on the best cheap product to help remove rust and protect the blade? I have WD40, but what else is good for this? Thanks.
>>
Electrolysis.
>>
>>1071215
(Don't submerge the handle, only the blade.)
>>
>>1071204
So you picked up discarded murder evidence on purpose?
>>
>>1071204
I know a trick or two for removing rust, but I don't know about protecting the blade in the future. The simplest rust removal method is just making a baking soda and water paste (ratio doesn't matter as long as it's of a pasty consistency) and using an old brush or overused toothbrush to scrub the paste all over the object. Rinse with water and dry thoroughly.
>>
>>1071217
It's a unique item and therefore has superior specs. OP would be a fool to leave it.
>>
>>1071222
>superior specs

yes, fine pakistani steel
>>
>>1071216
>Don't submerge the handle
submerge the handle too
maybe it'll fall the rest of the way off
>>
>>1071228
That looks like a Ka-Bar knockoff to me. It;s probably full tang either way, and the handle has those raised ridges for a reason. Don't think it looks all that deteriorated.

Any brand markings?
>>
Muriatic acid.

Works better than anything else.
>>
>>1071253
None.
>>
>>1071250
I'm going off memory here, but usually with ka-bars, the butt knob unscrews and then the handle (that is a stack of leather washers that fit into a centeral slot) comes off that way.

The handle is shot, but you can make a new one from leather yourself. And a sheath too. Just as a project, of course....

Also it appears somebody last sharpened it will a bastard file,,, but that is still fixable too.

Kabars have a pin holding on the metal cap.
>>
That is a KABAR, bayonett style. Full tang. Shouldn't have a cap or a.ything. It is for killing. As said earlier, muriatic acid and a wire brush will do.

Do you live in a war zone? Only Marines carry KABARs...

I have an old gun that has a good bit of rust on it, how can I remove the rust without damaging it? Not asking OP but similar question. I have read the thread but a gun is different than a knife and I don't want to screw it up.
>>
>>1071491
>Kabars have a pin holding on the metal cap.
Well yea, legit ones may.
But there's been fifty zillion cheapos made, and this one has no markings so it's probably not a legit one.

Real mil ones would have a contract number on them, would they not? I'm sure I've seen 'real' ones but its been many years ago.... US military stuff (at least, vintage stuff) usually has a contract number & contract date on it.

Electrolysis is worth it on an old gun. It's not hard or expensive.

It'll remove rust from places you can't get to
>>
>>1071204
If you want to go really cheap use toothpaste.
>>
>>1071204
An old KaBar ehh? Leave the rust, spraypaint over the top of it. Then reprofile the edge so its razorsharp. KaBars are made of 1095 simple steel, so they rust if you even look at them wrong or don't oil the blade after you make a cut with it.

Despite whatever war movies you watch or games you play, military issue Ka-bars and all other military issue knives almost never see combat and are just utility knives

Just about all any military issued knife is going to be used for is cutting rope and opening containers.
>>
>>1071232
it's certainly useable still, but it's probably either rough or smooth and either too hard or too soft, even if it retains most of it's form

plus, it'd be a good project to make a new handle
>>
>>1071501
>Only Marines carry KABARs...
I have a KaBar.... (speaks internally: Why the fuck did i buy a kabar i am retarded wtf god damn fucking 100$ knife.

If shit goes down we'll be prime targets to be killed for our really nice knives, which is flattering I guess.

As much as i love and want a Ka bar, my Ontario pilots survival knife is a lot more practical and a lot more cost effective.
>>
>>1071204
do you want it to look nice or cut nice? if you want it to look nice and then make it sharp later you can sand it with 400 grit then hit it with a buffing wheel. it wont hold the finish for long and it wont cut shit because of the endless rust.

if you want it to cut well, save yourself a lot of trouble, sand it and then paint it with a rust converting primer, then some hard as fuck engine enamel. use a belt sander or a wizzy wheel on a drill press to put a rough edge profile back on it. finish the profile with a aluminium oxide block(the ones sold as tool sharpeners, they are very abrasive and cheap as chips compared to ceramics), now electroplate it with zinc(galvanize it) so the cutting edge becomes rust resistant, you can then finish the edge to whatever degree you like, for these types of knifes there is no point making a razor because it'll forever be blunt due to the steel used, the small pockets of zinc will keep the cutting edge from rusting instantly and you wont have to worry about the tang looking like shit.

also make a sheath and fill it with WD-40
>>
>>1071204

You'll sink more time and money into restoring this piece of shit than it would cost to get another, better one.
>>
>>1071574
Older real ones are marked on the guard. Newer ones on the base of the blade. Have both, one an original USN mk2. Clean up the handguard and check for marks again OP. If the pommel is not pinned on its a turd.

Blade is stacked leather that is 100 ruined anyways.

So

>disassemble knife /remove leather
>electrolysis (it works fucking awesome m8)
>blade will be heavily pitted, but probably still useful.
>rehandle it (doesn't have to be leather, but can be)
>you now have a camping knife with a story
>>
>>1071204
>Electrolysis.
fuck that,
leave it in a tub of coca cola in the sun for a week
>>
>>1073588

You can't "clean that up". It's an antique. You'll ruin it. Believe me, unless you want to rehandle it, just leave it as is.
>>
>>1073695

unfuck that. Electrolysis is awesome.
>>
>>1073588
I could be wrong, but that looks like normal patina and shit.
>>
>>1073588
dont clean it up, apply some care to the sheath and the knife if you want to use it again, otherwise do nothing
