Love Coils REVIEW 1/2

I want to like this piece, I really do. Sweet & sappy romantic erotic stories are my jam--I've a hard-on for soft spots. However, a couple problems prevent me from really enjoying it: the plot's lack of real conflict thus far, & its attendant/resultant dialogue.

The characters' names appear too frequently in both dialogue and narration. Pronouns & other descriptive nouns are your friends, & a great opportunity to insert some description & characterization.

For instance, rather than "replied Cecil": "squeaked the obviously squirming eighteen-year-old." This could work early in the story to remind or reveal to the audience a character's age & disposition at once. It's half telling, but also half showing. All we've got is hair color, eye color, and "cute face."

As it stands, I'll never forget their names, but I don't know much beyond that. This segues into another difficulty I'm having with the story:

The characters seem flat. The entire world revolves around their relationship as though it's all that exists. I don't know what Amber does for a career or hobbies (other than she works on a shit side of town); or her body type; or what her house looks like beyond "dusty." The audience is left to ponder Cecil: he's clearly meek generally, & weak-kneed when it comes to the lamia, obviously infatuated with her; but what did he do that he arrived back at his home town with just the shirt on his back? Did he leave against his parents' wishes, like run away before he was even of age? What job could such a milksop even hold down?

And that's sort of the rub: we get endless examples of how the two interact with & feel about each other, but nothing regarding any other aspect of their lives. "Welp, they're embarrassed and Cecil is reluctant to express himself but Amber is on-edge about it, as though we don't know every step in advance."

They don't have anything to do but each other, no aspects of personality beyond a childish hopefulness of obviously returned affections. That dead horse is paste now, but how do they plan to pay the mortgage? It's not that the story demands such infinitesimal minutiae, & most are best without it--it's that their interactions seem such a foregone conclusion that the audience might have a rough time envisioning the characters as real people.

There's no conflict or tension after Cecil comes back & a mugging occurs. The audience can only guess at how the two would react to more realistic, adult situations rather than visceral danger & borderline-obsessive puppy love.

If there's any advice I can give it's to go through in editing and just catch a few of the redundancies, it's a minor nitpick, only because I can't find any more serious issues.
