Picking up where I left off yesterday with Powers #23. Previous thread is located here.

Heading home (will get food on the way). Send bumps if you can. If not I completely get it.
Unrelated note, I gave two baller lectures today so I'm going to celebrate by purchasing a game. Which sounds better, Witcher 3 or Phantom Pain?
Blonde hair does not suit you, Walker. The beard ain't bad though.
God Deena is a cunt. How in gods name did I tolerate her the first time I read this?
Holy Shit!
It's not a Bendis comic until you see someone give a televised interview or a press conference.
>>89957132
Well, she could have rolled all that out while walking through her villain's lair, but I think that trope is pretty lame too.
You really should have known better.

And?

And what Mr. Bendis?
In Season 2 of Powers the TV show they spent the first major part of the season solving the murder of Janice (Retrogirl). The back 4 were an adaptation of this storyline.
This page is a fucking chore. Everytime I think the comic is starting to pick up some serious traction we get a page like this that grinds everything to a screeching halt. When I was 19 I thought Bendis was the shit and I wanted to emulate his dialog. Now that I've been engrossed in comics for the past 8-9 years as well as contiuiously improving my writing through graduate work/my personal comics I've severely altered my thoughts.
Honest Question: What are your genuine thoughts on Bendis as a writer?
Strengths?
Writes "snappy" dialog and genuinely has interesting ideas for plots even if he can't always stick the landing.
Weaknesses?
He's admitted that he loves comics because he can be 100 percent certain that all the dialog he puts in the script is going to be on the page. So fucking self indulgent.
Best work?
Ultimate Spider-ManDark Avengers
Worst?
Some people consider Avengers Vol. 4 bad, but it's an action packed romp compared to the snoozefest that is his New Avengers Vol. 2.
>>89958173
I remember how awful the trailer for the first season was. I still can't believe there was a second.
>>89958426
I feel they definitely stepped up their game in every sense of the word in season 2.

Dark Avengers wasn't good, it was a smack on the face to the fans of every character involved and Ellis did crazy Norman 100x better.
Anyway.
>>89958376
>What are your genuine thoughts on Bendis as a writer?
>Strengths?
I honestly don't know. His dialogue is shit, his voices are nonexistent, his plots are idiotic, his prose is awful...
>Weaknesses?
See above.
>Best work?
Daredevil, just barely.
>Worst?
Avengers, GotG, Alias, Age of Ultron, Civil fucking War II, and the list goes on...
Talk about fucking shafted.
I like her.
I know some might consider it tacky, but I think this filter is sexy as hell.
>>89958708
Ellis may have written a more unhinged and entertaining Norman but I felt Bendis' take had significantly more depth and nuance.
Also if that's really how you feel about Bendis then what are you doing here?
>>89958376
I was always surprised by how the panels are laid out in his books. Felt very whimsical. I know Civil War II and Riri have really jaded people on Bendis, but I think he's a good writer when he doesn't have to handle seven comics and half of the Marvel universe at once, and just focuses more on street stuff like Alias.
>>89959099
All Bendis did was copy the best parts of Ellis' Osborn. Fuck, even KSD wrote a better Osborn.
>Also if that's really how you feel about Bendis then what are you doing here?
I wanted to see if Powers held up after all this time. It doesn't.
>>89959406
Alias was shit though.
so I asked a while back if powers was still ongoing and someone told me they cancelled the original run and started up some bogus new retcon or something
is that accurate?
.....damn

Damn, that is some Ennis-tier edge.I like it
>>89959716
The series is still going as far as I'm aware, like in their 4th of fifth volume (not inducing powers bureau).
>>89956270
Phantom pain isn't complete. I'd go with witcher.
>>89961073
>>89961093
I liked this
I get that Powers tended to use the image sequentially to excess but there were as many times when it had the right dramatic pay off
The first time I read Christian's origin I was at a loss just because of how different it was.
>>89961383
this is personally one of my favorite arcs out of Powers. Fun stuff
Definitely one of Bendis' more unique issues. On that note, I feel that Bendis does really good silent issues. The one he did for Daredevil and Ultimate Spider-Man were gold.
I really feel like Bendis was on to something special with the end of this first volume. Shame the TV show didn't do a damn thing with his backstory. Just made him a big time power that was on top of the world before he got his shit handed to him by Wolfe and he lost his abilities.
>>89961804
haven't seen the show but I gotta agree.
how'd you feel about the second volume? overall I think the stories got tighter though I thought the way Christian got powers back was off, like just a work around.
>>89961164
It can be done well, the problem is that Bendis has no self-control and does it over and over and over again.
>>89961006
For a second there I thought there was two of them now. That would have been horrible
>>89961903
>overall I think the stories got tighter though I thought the way Christian got powers back was off
Exceptiionally well put. I'd argue that Powers is one of the few series that I feel gets better as it progresses with it constantly mixing things up with rosters, locations, and powers themed plots. Its obvious that this project is Bendis' and Oeming's baby.
>>89961982
That would have been catastrophic
Love that Bendis managed to find a completely logical non asspull explanation for why we can have Conan the Barbarian go on adventures in a cape comic. Bravo.
Well this certainly escalated.
I now want Bendis to write a Conan-Esque series with someone like Mignola on art. Don't care what peeps think.
>>89962645
>wasting a master like Mignola on fucking Bendis
You truly are the worst namefag.
Ready to fucking rumble
I'm loving the look to Haemon.
>>89962737You're hilarious.
And I was just getting attached to her.
I think this page is really well done. My two cents.
Love it.
And on that note, I hope everyone enjoyed the third consecutive Powers thread. We will definitely finish the first volume tomorrow and then we can start the second!
Also, when I inevitable finish the entirerty of Powers, what should the next project be? Here are current titles I'm thinking about.
Slott's Spider-Man Epic (this would be daunting).
Jeff Parker's Thunderbolts - Dark Avengers Vol. 2
Punisher Max by Jason Aaron
Fletcher Hanks - I Shall Destroy All Civilized Planets! You Shall Die by Your Own Evil Creation!
Calvin and Hobbes?
Waid - Irredeemable, Incorruptible
Invincible Vol. 1-21 (I don't have the single issues).
If you absolutely hate all of the provided options post some of your recommendations and I'll see what I can do.
>>89963021
Someone else is already doing Invincible (all of the Kirkmanverse for that matter)
>>89963021
Have you ever read They're Not Like Us? I really like it, it's like a Generation Y X-Men. Otherwise, Irredeemable sounds good.
Thanks as always!
>>89963086
Oh that is so fucking sweet! Do you happen to know the thread by chance?
Also other options.
Geoff Johns Superman Run
Miracleman by Moore and Gaiman (non-digital scans)
Angel and Buffy Comic Series (this would be a wild ride).
Casanova by Fraction.
>>89963207
I did read it and while I can recognize the series offers something truly unique, it just isn't for me. Glad to see a vote for Irredeemable
Bendis wrote this? This here?
>>89963880
Bendis. Really Bendis. Who knew? Bendis.

>Bendis was once a Maoist who championed the murderous ideology of Mao Zedong and the Khmer Rouge. We condemn Sim and Moore of their political sins, but Sim tried to prove he was not a hater after "Cerebus". And Moore insisted he loathed misogyny but had simply done as told. Maybe they were full of shit but at least they tried to publicly distance themselves from extreme politics.
>Not Bendis who espoused the most extreme, murderous, and destructive form of leftism. Comic bloggers, so outraged about long retired Sim and long irrelevant Moore, never demanded of Bendis to face up to his past sins. Unlike Ditko and Miller who candidly confessed their approval of, respectively, objectivism and fascism, Bendis has never ever apologized in general, or in specific to the countless victims of the tyrants he supported with all his heart.
>Bendis celebrated and championed Mao's total destruction of culture and intellectual life and the Khmer Rouge that transformed Cambodia overnight into a genocidal stone age Marxist state.
Fuck that piece of shit.
SURVIVE TILL MORNING BUMP!
