yo slime mold guy, from the end of the last thread
>>89467633
this is already better, see the effect of the unshaded eyes? though actually now that I look, this one has shading at the TOPS of the eyes, indicating they are not only flat stickers but sitting underneath brows. That works fine. Stylized eyes SHOULD be flat, unless you're intentionally making a bug-eyed goof of a character.
but one thing I have to ask is why the faces' shading is so much softer and more gradiented than the other parts? it's true of the cover but it's true of this one too. the way the hand and the neck is shaded seems like it'd work just fine on the face but you didn't really do it that way
also izzat sum stubble on the face? i see two uneven patches of gray
>>
>>89475354
Doing softer shading on the face was a combination of trying to make the face look gentler/friendlier and me being too lazy to do that kind of shading on the whole figure. You think the cel-shadier shading looks better on the face? I tried un-blending it a little.

Also, the grey stuff on the face was an attempt at color zones.
>>
>>89475968
yeah I know how you feel, it's scary trying to put harder shading on a face, but you have the chops for it. This looks way better
>color zones
yeah I don't think this style really works with those, but good for you for trying. I can tell you have what it takes to do good realism

What art/artists inspires you, /hyw/? Are there any art styles in particular you try to imitate/learn from?
>>
>>89478151
I used to respect really complex art back when I was a kid reading cape comics, but it took anime, videogames, and cute stationery to teach me that you can get a lot across with very little, as long as you do it just right. There's really subtle tricks of geometry that make it cute instead of lame
Muppets too, come to think of it. Their designers had a lot of little interesting rules that not only helped make them cute and unique, but helped hide the fact that they weren't actually able to change expression

Smut doodler visiting from /d/ here. What would be a smart workflow for developing a lewd 1-3 page comic?

I find writing and page layouts really difficult to do.
>>
>>89499603
If it's short and self-contained, you already know how it's going to start and end, which is good as you know what you're working towards.

Figure out and write down the sequence of events and the important moments and dialogue.

See if you can spot a transition or scene change that might make a good point for a page break.

Go over the sequence of events and break it down into panels. Can any of the events and dialogue be combined into one panel? Have you written an event that should be split into several panels?

Make a rough sketch of the layout of the panels on the page. Have you left enough space for the important actions and dialogue? Do you need to resize any panels? Are there too many/too few panels on the page?

Redo the rough layouts several times until you're happy everything flows properly.

Now you can start to draw the strip properly based on your rough layouts.

What resolution should I draw my webcomic in? A lot of people seem to make theirs positively enormous.
>>
>>89503731
You draw huge then scale down the finished piece to whatever you need.
>>
>>89503731
Bigger is better if you think you'd ever want to print. Draw at a minimum of 300dpi, and the standard size for comic pages is 8.5 x11 inches. Keep in mind, you don't HAVE to put your pages at 8.5 x 11 inches, feel free to use other aspect ratios, but that might make it harder to print.
>>
>>89503789
But that always felt like cheating to me, and I kinda don't wanna spend days scrolling when I draw.

Good! thanks for the help.

>>89478151
My inspiration comes from Katsuhiro Otomo and Koji Morimoto, the artists behind Akira, Robot Carnival, and Memories. Their proficiency with drawing complex and believable technology has always baffled me and I've always tried to mimic them. Some of my prized possessions are my hand painted animation cels from their works. Secondary inspiration comes from studio trigger, their way of drawing expressive people with so few lines is very admirable.

>>89503731
better to go too big than too small. For my landscape drawings I always do 1920x1080p since that's roughly the resolution of a computer monitor. For my portrait drawings I always keep the 1920 width but just increase the height. Then I scale it down when posting online.

>>89503820
It's not cheating and it ensures no matter how it's viewed it will always look clean.
>>
>>89503850
Oh well. At least I found out before I already had a bunch of pages drawn.

Mitsuru Adachi is my inspiration. Now that I'm doing more digital than before, I lost a lot of practice with inking, but I used to poorly imitate his inking a lot years ago.
He is still my idol and I look up to him to this day.
>>
>>89503731

As stated in >>89503798, find a standard printed comic size, and work to that at 300dpi. You can then scale down for screen.
Draw at 600dpi (or even 1200dpi) if your computer can handle it.

I draw at A5, 1200 dpi, which is 6992x9921
This is printed at A5, 300dpi, or 1748x2480
Published screen size is A5, 96dpi, 700x1000

Knowing the final print size means I can size the text and artwork accordingly, so it isn't too large or too small. There's no point noodling around with pixel-sized details that are going to vanish when reduced.

>>89503820
Even before digital, cartoonists drew their strips larger than printed size, usually 1.5 times larger ("half up").

You won't be drawing at 100% pixel size most of the time; you should usually be zoomed out. Find out what print size looks like on your work monitor, and keep that in mind (hold a piece of paper next to the screen if you have to), so you can have some idea of how large it will look.
>>
>>89497428
If I had friends to have fun with I'd probably put them first, man
>>
>>89503820
>scrolling
new to digital art, are you? you don't scroll, you zoom in and out constantly. get it on a hotkey that you're comfortable with
it's not cheating because your screen has incredibly low resolution. Think about it, you're running, what, 1600 pixels on your monitor? That's a tiny tiny piece of paper. real life has a huge resolution. There's no alternative
>>
>>89504337
>new to digital art, are you? you don't scroll, you zoom in and out constantly
I've been dicking around with it for eight years, though I never bothered zooming in and out. Never could tell what the final product will look like if I draw at the wrong level of zoom.

Doing this on my tiny Cintiq feels like it would be many times more trouble than it's worth. I see your point on real life resolution, though. Wouldn't it be as easy as just zooming out to whatever size you're gonna reduce the final picture to, though? What's the point of zooming in and out?

>>
>>89505048
I didn't have any trouble with it.
>>
>>89504980
>Never could tell what the final product will look like if I draw at the wrong level of zoom.
that's part of drawing big and saving small. also I can't believe that in eight years you haven't gotten any kind of eye for it
>Wouldn't it be as easy as just zooming out to whatever size you're gonna reduce the final picture to, though?
Try it, then zoom in on your lines afterwards and see how they look. If they look shitty, then you're in my boat. If they look fine, then by all means draw the whole thing zoomed way out. Since you have a cintiq that should be a lot easier for you than for those of us using non-screen tablet digitizers
>What's the point of zooming in and out?
checking on your lines and doing the fine detail. I spend a lot of time at 200 or 300 percent. other times I zoom out to 33 or 50 percent so I can see the whole thing at once (50, 25, etc give you a good representation, it's the uneven numbers like 33 that tend to make it hard to tell)
>>
>>89505048
Hehehehe. I like this. Nice use of nested and overlapping panels.
The only critique I would give is to make differing use of the negative space. Some panels have a ton of useless sky, others are very cramped and require text to touch or even overlap the art. With things this simple you should have no trouble taking the 'camera' in for more close-ups and out for more wide shots to vary things up. source: I have that same issue

Only if you shrank it using 'nearest neighbor'. that would result in very ugly pixel art
if you shrink it using any other algorithm though, it uses anti-aliasing to trick the viewer into thinking the lines are quite small and detailed, when they aren't
open up any comic you find on the internet into your program of choice and zoom in and look at the pixels and how the anti-aliasing works. every comic you've ever read online, unless it's videogame sprites or something like Prequel, i promise this is what they did, and it looks good, right?
>>
>>89507300
true but once in a while you'll want to zoom out and take stock of everything, make sure it's all in proportion. At least during the sketch phase

I wasn't being sarcastic, just dramatic. I seriously did lose most of my respect for my drawing senpais when I realized that's how they did it. It was a huge disappointment, honestly.

The last thing I drew with colour was this. I have no illusions about being a good artist or anything - when I say I've been dicking around with digital art, I meant I spent the first four years using the tablet as a very expensive coaster. That one was an Intuos - the plastic is surprisingly heat resistant.

heh. I like you. and I respect your bucking the usual practice.
> no illusions about being a good artist
Uhhh this is absolutely good art.. but you clearly drew this a lot larger than its current size, then shrank it. I mean look at the lines. Right? Unless you're just a master of using anti-aliased lines, I can't believe you drew this at this size.
>>

>earlier you gave me the impression you weren't familiar with the practice.
No, I mean, naturally shrinking a drawing is going to hide its flaws, I've known *that* since before tablets were commercially available. I just thought it seemed so cheap, I never did it, and assumed other people wouldn't either. Then again, I do have a history of needlessly hamstringing myself instead of working smarter.

Then I got hold of some hi-res versions of artwork I liked, and realized the lines were actually lazy garbage in reality.

>you clearly drew this a lot larger than its current size, then shrank it.
I'll take that as a compliment, then. I'll grant you that getting decent-looking lineart out of my digital tablets has been my #1 priority ever since I started using them.

I have a similar outlook on stabilizer software.

It gets a lot easier when you draw larger pictures using thick lines, though. Stuff like this picture ends up looking a lot worse.
>>
>>89511099
are you saying you drew these at-size using anti-aliased lines? well donk, dude, if that's the case, keep going. This art looks fine and dandy. Granted these are full-sized drawings, not comic panels.. but maybe you don't need to draw MUCH bigger than display size
>>
>>89511149
Weeeell, turns out my art program had a function to automatically up your dpi, increase the size, set border areas and even pre-draw panels for comics projects, so I guess since the universe has decided to make it easy for me, I'll have to oblige. I mean, it's not gonna make it look worse.

Plus, if I'm gonna actually print it physically at some point, I probably don't have any other choice, right?
>>
>>89511312
actually.... honestly, if your art is that well-anti-aliased, you could print it. A keen eye could see a few pixels, but not very well

someone with better experience and better eyes feel free to contradict me, but I think you'd be alright

also what program is that, and what's the function called that does this so automatically? you might be the teacher this time

You do mostly use the same type of nose, but I like that kind of nose. I feel it's as good a representation of 'nose in general' as an oval is for 'eyes on general'. You could try varying its size up a little from time to time, and maybe work in a few other chin types, but in my opinion you're doing just fine.

Inspector Gadget shorts coming along.

So far the hardest part has been resisting the urge to force too big a narrative.

When doing something short like a single gag or 2-3 pages I don't really know how to lead in right. A short might not have to strictly follow a narrative format, like a setup to a gag isn't necessarily the same thing as a setup to a scene, if that makes sense. I don't know...

This is what I was talking about earlier. I think this could work for just two pages, but I think maybe I should throw some dialogue in the first panel on page one to help with the lead in.

I also debated on doing a longer setup and making it three pages, but I don't want to overdo it for a simple gag fight scene.

>Doing this on my tiny Cintiq feels like it would be many times more trouble than it's worth
You are drawing in the same way you play FPS games - one hand on the mouse (tablet pen in this case), the other on WASD keys. I rebinded my key shortcuts like this:

Q, W - rotate canvas left/right (you can't rotate your tablet like you can rotate a piece of paper to get a better drawing position)
E, R - zoom in/out
A, S, D, F, G, C, V - various brushes, eraser, color picker, lasso tool etc. (you can have multiple things under one key, it will cycle through them)
Z, X - undo/redo (you don't have to press Ctrl for this anymore)
Shift+E, Shift+R - brush size up/down
Shift+Q, Shift+W - opacity up/down

It's much, much faster to work this way rather than having to click things in menus.

Nope, bought my first and only tablet in 2009, wacom bamboo, still using it to this day. A friend bought his shortly after, and last time he took it off the closet a few years ago it was still working.
A guy I knew bought a genius tablet, though, and his stopped working in about two weeks of use... I heard these tend to be defective, but I don't know anyone else who had genius tablets.

I've posted my last comic on Imgur as a way to show people my stuff at work (It's one of the few sites we can connect to) but Imgur by itself doesn't seem like that great of a way to promote yourself. Worked on some colors and reworking inks.

Making good progress, working a little every day save for a couple past few days.

Need to recolor last panel for better color contrast and light illumination. I always like how Marte Gracia does that, like when cyclops shows his blast and his mostly in red, or good portion of him is in values of red.

Working on expository writing for someone else's world-building. Please, on a scale from "cringe" to "acceptable", rate my shit:

All told, the apocalypse had been a weird one. Mankind had spent its entire existence pondering an ending to all that is; grand theological operas of justice and flame, storms of otherworldly fury raining from the heavens, slow and bitterly poetic bleedout brought about by ecological collapse and humanity's own hubris... Perhaps even a transcendence to some other consciousness, metaphysical or machine.

What a majority of people did not expect was the moon to explode.

Granted, the explosion was only part of the problem. Earth's moon had detonated in relatively close proximity to the planet itself, the result of hyperscience gone wrong and roughly fifty-seven thousand years of obsessively plotted time travel crammed into a single century loop. The result was a wash of irresponsibly advanced magic and technology across the planet as the moon's inhabitants and resources spilled forth to escape their imminent destruction.

The times that followed were largely punctuated with declarations of "what the fuck was that?" from humanity as a whole, having experienced alien first contact, mysto-spiritual awakening, and a radical mutation of flora, fauna, and physics all in the same day... followed by the moon exploding and taking just under half the earth's population with it. The simple answer is that the moon had collided with another of itself, trying to occupy nearly the spot in spacetime. The problem with that answer is that it has little to do with why the moon was in high earth orbit when this occurred, and also that it is a profoundly stupid answer because spacetime does not work that way. Nevertheless, it did work that way.

boxes have the advantage of looking nice when arranged in a 4-square. vertical boxes give you more room for dialogue, while horizontal boxes give you more room for side-to-side action. It's best to custom tailor your needs based on that

why cant the batman art threads ever stay up? where am i supposed to post my brand new sketches at?

serious on topic question with pic related, should batman threads fuze with hywc threads? ive heard it talked about before and silently thought it was a bad idea because stand alone art is very different from sequential art, which is what this thread is supposed to be about but rarely ever is...
>>
>>89516561
If it's a habit you've fallen into, you really won't notice. I've found the best way to break it is to keep a mental checklist of each of the facial features, and go out of my way to GREATLY vary them compared to my other characters. I will ask myself, "exactly HOW can I make these features different?"

I'll give you an example using your pic of the two characters:
>Eyes: different enough
>eyebrows: too similar
>Nose: too similar
>Cheeks, jawline, and chin: practically the same
>Mouth: similar, but that probably doesn't matter given your style

Another thing I'd suggest is to base their features off their personalities for more variety, for instance, a square jawline for more gruff, masculine characters. Feel free to really exaggerate.

desu anon, you could do a lot worse. I mean, yeah, if ALL your characters have the same features as pic related, that's pretty samey, but one or two characters aren't too bad

>>
>>89537265
He includes a lot of mixed together elements from whatever video game he's playing at the time. This one asshole in these threads decides to call that plagiarism, as if that isn't what we're all doing.
It all started out with a character who was named pony and colored identically to one of the ponies, with the same personality, and having wings. Evidently this was a coincidence, so he changed that one's name and appearance. After that though, everyone was on plagiarism-watch. And because the little fuck has severe ADD and draws like his hand's going to fall off any second, it's apparently lots of fun to give him shit and ruin threads with it.
>>
>>89537508

That's not taking inspiration. One Piece and Naruto were both inspired by Dragon Ball, and you can see it, but at the same time, you can also see they have an identity for themselves.
But whatever you say bub.
>>
>>89537699
He has a creepy neon villain with mannerisms inspired by flowey, and the overall 'colored lines on black background' is clearly inspired by undertale
>>
>>89537751
it's more like "Suppaman" from dragon ball, I think. Or the fact that Sonic does the same thing as super saiyans, down to the green eyes (originally)
Just a tip for everyone though, when you're making homages and parodies, it helps if you're making some kind of statement on the thing you're parodying. That's one of the reasons parody is protected by law, it's a form of expression.
>>
>>89537751
He is so braindead he can't muster an ounce of originality, and he thinks people care to delve into the world of a mish mash of popular tropes interpreted by a short bus kid?

I don't mind shitty art or shitty writing, we have a lot of beginners in /hyw/. But it's this parasitic lack of originality that makes the comic so repulsive.

Parody is a satire with a meaning. There is literally no reason for "his" characters to look the way they look that implies it's a parody of the original characters, or any of their quirks.
Not-Jotaro was supposed to be a parody of buff guys in RPGs, but Jotaro's character has nothing to do with that, and its closest relation it's he's fucking tall, but that is not parody.

And he's not even willing to admit he can't design characters on his own so he takes from other places to fill the gap. He think it's ok because it counts as "reference"

Super Sonic was retarded imo, I can't defend that.
>>
>>89524489
What do you mean?
>>
>>89538066
That's what I said, yeah. It helps if parody has a bit more to it than just admiration. But that's where homage takes over.

Is this in any way related to The Time Machine, because this seems very similar to one of the plot points.

Over all, it could make for an interesting story. Is it supposed to be kind of 90s? Because it seems a lot like a 90s fantasy kind of plot.

If it was me putting it together, my biggest concern would be trying to include too many elements and either them clashing too much with each other or them being disproportionately developed (some under, some over.)

These kinds of ideas walk a thin line.

Oh. In that case the writing is a bit wordy. There is a lot of... over emphasis? If I could recommend anything I'd recommend simplifying and then going back and adding to it as necessary. You don't want to overload the reader.

In The Time Machine the moon explodes ultimately leading to a disaster that later results in sci-fi psychic humans in the (way, way distant) future who live in tandem with primitive low tech humans. The synopsis made me think of an adventure set in a similar setting, albeit more... 90s...

>>
>>89552897
huh? deadpool is an intentional parody of deathstroke
near-recolors is a massive exaggeration. dewd's "ripoffs" just look like someone verbally described characters from games to someone who had never seen them before. The details are all there, but all changed, but look like they were trying to be the same but failed to be.
except that time when it was straight up sette and duane. He got rid of those. Which sucks because they were cute, but admitted they were just direct copies... except in terms of personality they weren't. Meh.

>>89553164
>deadpool is an intentional parody of deathstroke
No, he isn't. When Retard McPouches first created him, he was just a ripoff of Deathstroke, and he was told to shove the character up his ass. It took some time before he became the Deadpool we know and love (and are getting tired of after 15 years of hype).
>>
>>89553312
how is that not what I just said
>>
>>89553164
>huh? deadpool is an intentional parody of deathstroke
And that's a DC comic. Deadpool isn't in that image, just two different Deathstrokes.

The point was that using design elements in order to pay homage/give a not-so-sly wink, like in the case of Sonic 2 and BSA #1, isn't anything like taking designs and then altering them for your personal use (WTH or Incarnate). There's a world of difference in intent, and tasteful reference tends to utilize a concept only in part, do it rarely, or make that the whole joke in and of itself.

>but it doesn't count because they look different (because the artist isn't competent enough to actually render characters consistently)

It does that too though. The way the vegabonds even stay alive is by doing jobs for both factions that their alignments would prevent them from doing themselves. They have both electrical and biological transmitters that allow them to stay in contact with both factions at all times even if they're galaxies away. Communication is their main strength. Plus "caravan" doesn't sound sci-fi or space related at all. I don't want the gypsy parallels to be that overt. Maybe their transport ships will be called vegabond-caravans, but not their sprawling base of operations.

This post of yours didn't have enough words. It could use a few more words, such as the words "in a word balloon", "in a panel," or "in a page (of given size)"

>>
>>89562724
shit is it really that bad? I had the group split up back in November so I could quickly explore three different storylines, and do them in more interesting ways because of the relieved girth of the usually too-large cast.
I specifically paired up combinations who had never been alone with each other before, so they could have some contrast (Mizu's group with the issues of maturity, Riven and Sasha's book smarts vs street (er, cave) smarts, and Kaen and Hel, the rich guy who cares nothing for money and the greedy chick. Plus someone suggested many threads ago they wanted to see those two buddying up)
The problem is I didn't think comics were going to suddenly start taking 5 days to finish, but all these new areas are really taking it out of me. I'm trying to use up as much of my written-down ideas as possible, because after this, the final plot wraps up and the comic's over.
I assume anyone following it all along wouldn't find it too confusing, as they've split up before
>>

>>

http://www.comicscube.com/2012/07/the-craft-interview-with-alan-moore-by.html

>But anyway, Mort Weisinger, because he was the toughest of the editors, I thought: “Alright, I'll take his standard as the strictest”. What he said was: if you've got 6 panels on a page, then the maximum number of words that you should have in each panel, is 35. No more. That's the maximum. 35 words per panel. Also, if a balloon has more than 20 or 25 words in it, it's gonna look too big. 25 words is the absolute maximum for balloon size. Right, once you've taken on board those two simple rules, laying out comics pages – it gives you somewhere to start – you sort of know: “OK, so 6 panels, 35 words a panel, that means about 210 words per page maximum”.

These rules are attributed to Moore himself, even though he got them from Mort Weisinger. Obviously, the max words per page assumes a normal sized page with 6 panels, and a webcomic can have really tall pages with lots of panels, but it's still a nifty rule of them.

I don't count words myself, but when scripting Saffron and Sage, I try not to let a character have more than one line of dialogue at a time.

Breaking up the cast is fine, it's just that it seems like you're not getting much momentum going with any one story because you're trying to juggle them. I think it makes more sense to stick with one story until you have a good break point before switching to another, or have some kind of transition from one group to another.

I have to admit, though, I've never been entirely comfortable with when to cut between scenes (though I like this match cut from today's Saffron), so I might not be the best expert on this topic.

You're right, I'm just 'writing until I hit a good joke' as I clumsily do sometimes. For example in this one, Emil goes on about his magic endeavors shortly before the climax to this whole sidequest happens.. and those would have naturally been the next, oh, 8-12 panels, but I wanted to get this thing out.

The first few comics when I started the splitup, I did half-and-halfs, plus a three-way split in the first one, just to introduce it and make it clear and establish it

lessons learned, for sure. Worst part is, Gyomudo is ALSO doing his own thing concurrently, but he's not a main character so I'm okay leaving him out.. but I can't help but think some people would rather be watching him right now.

Yeah I wasn't so much worried about "triggering the sjws" as I was using a term genuinely offensive and not knowing about it. I wouldn't of even considered it but when I was talking to one of my friends I brought up the gypsy array and they said "Isn't that a slur" and so I figured I'd ask here in case it was just something I was ignorant to.

I think I sorted out how to include it though. Once the protagonist gets their briefing on the vegabond faction and what they do there'll be some dialog in the vein of this.

"This place is called the gypsy array? Why is that?"

"Well it used to just be called "the array" but the first time it was ever deemed large or important enough to be addressed by a planet's leader it was referred to condescendingly by earth's president as "That gypsy array" and we thought that had a nice ring to it."

That way it shows the vegabond faction themselves were named that as an insult but took it in stride.

>>89563587
I'm saying that if you did anything other than sticking with nearly-flats with such a small range of greens, you wouldn't have this problem. You don't need to replicate the exact same color values in each panel. A slight change in orientation or lighting in real life can alter our perception of overall tone, there's nothing stopping you from using a breadth of greens and even off-greens and non-greens.
>>
>>89563776
technically gypsy is something that we probably wouldn't allow if they weren't semi-white and barely-known. it derives from the misconception that they're egyptian
but technically it's not really offensive to call someone the wrong thing, it's not like people get on your case much for saying indian instead of native american
>>
>>89563828
Hmm. I'm still working on things like altering lighting for scenarios. I plan to study it in-depth before the next iteration of the comic, because right now I'm absolutely pants at it. My mind's eye just autocorrects any tinted or filtered scenes.
I have noticed that sometimes a speck on a car's windshield will look light against something dark, but if you move your head, it looks dark against the sky.. would that have been a good idea in this instance? and if so, which one would darken and which lighten? I assume the foreground (the actual character) would be the lighter one.

Aaaalso yeah sticking with flats made it worse. That would have been a fine time to bust out some shading, in retrospect. I had a good conversation in one of these threads about a month ago about things like that, and vowed to use more shading here and there when it really helps.

tldr I'm aware of those issues but thanks for pointing them out in an instance I wasn't fully cognizant of. Deffo trying to fix that.

Dudes who use video games to transform into super heroes. Tokusatsu-style super heroes with high-tech gear. You know, like Kamen Rider Ex-Aid.
And the main problem is that I built the whole world around the idea of video games, with technology so advanced that the cyberspace is materialized into the real world and that's what allows the characters to have those powers. Instead of being a stereotypical toku-like setting, it's a post-dystopian world where society is rebuilding itself thanks to archeo-technology, but since the cyberspace now shares space with reality, they have to deal with monsters, crazy A.I.s and psycho programmers.
Granted, I honestly haven't seen a single episode of Ex-Aid, I've only seen some of the fight scenes. But people will instantly link the two.
Shit happened to me with Little Witch Academia too. I guess it's my fault for doing the world-building first.
>>
>>89568719
I think as long as you kept up the darker dystopian cyberpunk elements and didn't give it the same tone and appearance as ex-aid it should be fine. Maybe look more towards 80s sci-fi anime than tokusatsu for visuals. When you described the stuff they'd be fighting it really reminded me of the dead hacker for "cyber city oedo". Really cool idea though, I'd like to see it happen. Seems like it could easily be a creation of its own.

Are there any indie webcomics that aren't generic capeshit or generic fantasy? I tried reading some but they're incredibly derivative and boring on top of usually having really bad art.
I'm willing to look past the bad art for a good interesting and fresh story. Any recommendations?

how do i mitigate the feeling of utter misery that comes with investing hours of effort into something to entertain someone, only to have it
>ignored (entertained nobody)
>insulted (as above, but with feedback, albeit useless feedback like "it's shit")

i'm becoming increasingly convinced the only way to not be a miserable content creator is to take the low-effort route, with positive responses being essentially a function of random chance (and thus maximising chance by maximising content, without regard for quality.) and negative ones being filtered out with no need to even defend what you were thinking: that would take up valuable time in churning out the next junk.

I don't actually have a comic, but I thought it might yield interesting discussion here, as I encounter this problem elsewhere.
>>
>>89573001
Man...You have to make your comic because it's fulfilling for yourself. Not because you want attention. If you go into it expecting attention, you're only setting yourself up for misery. Make it because you want it to exist.
>>
>>89573103
I'd be careful to draw the distinction between wanting attention, and wanting to entertain.

Particularly because you can often still feel fulfilment of the latter if someone refers to your thing later, without knowing it was you, or perhaps being able to put their finger on exactly what it was, for example. Whereas if you just want attention that doesn't really count as a success because all you know is that someone liked it enough to mention it, without caring about you enough to remember you specifically.
>>
>>89573001
Ask yourself if you have passion for creating things and double down on your investment.
No, really.

If you're in it for the art, spend more time studying things like composition, form, architecture, anatomy, texture, light and shadow, color, etc. If you like writing, study pacing, structure, genre, templates, audience expectation, dialogue, character, theme, etc. As long as you have passion in your craft, studying and growing will be its own reward.

>>

>>89573001 is saying he's depressed because he's put effort into entertaining people but it gets ignored or insulted, and feels like the only way not to be miserable is to make everything super low effort and focus entirely on getting positive responses without caring about quality, just churning things out.

if you can't just get used to being insulted, and if you feel like taking the lazy low-effort way out is the way, then you obviously need to get used to being miserable like the rest of us, instead of letting your selfish motivation for mindless happiness drive you to less quality

Seriously, get over yourself.

Your failure isn't about your sex.
Your failure isn't about luck.
Your failure isn't about being born too early or late.

If you continue to try and fail, that's your own fault, and you have to deal with that. You have to grow the fuck up and stop blaming everything and everyone but yourself.
>>
>>89575386
And what's stopping you from getting a sex change, huh anon? You can turn from a cute boy into a cute girl in a matter of months.

Or even better, forego a proper sex change and be a cute "girl".
>>
sorry, one book doesn't change my opinion. the top comics on the site i was hosted on were almost all done by women that posted photos of themselves in the forums instead of pages. a few hadn't updated their books in years but were still in the top spots and making money hand over fist on patreon based completely on their gender and willingness to exploit it
>>
>>89575604
I would disagree with a small portion of that
Most/many of your problems aren't your fault, but the result of outside influence that you have a limited ability to affect
However, you still can't blame anyone else for your failures. Or at least it won't do any good to just throw blame around instead of overcoming those problems

like if you're poor because your family's poor, because your ancestors were poor, because someone else's ancestors did cruel things to yours.. that is the result of your problem, but you don't just blame the descendants, you do the best you can with the lot you got.
>>

i could get a sex change or pretend to get one, you're right, could also say or pretend i was homosexual or identify as an attack helicopter, that'd be almost as good as being a woman willing to take selfies every few minutes. it bothers me that having a good story with good art and never missing an update isn't enough to find even moderate success. its beyond frustrating to watch work i've slaved on get no notice whatsoever while some chick who decided hey, comics are cool i guess last week can get a hundred subs in a day.

Guy is full of shit anyway. We have a female colorist and it doesn't help us at all. Takes more then being a woman or gay or whatever to make it today, really in Webcomics being consistent matters more then just about everything else. Keep updating and in time you'll find success.

Women have it easier, but because of this men achieve greater things. Humans are creatures of necessity, why fix the toilet when it flushes just fine?

The fact that people shower them with praise because of sexual attraction limits their actual growth as artists. They will get comfortable and never strive for the mountain peak. Men, no one gives a shit about you unless you're 6'0+ chad, so we must push ourselves much harder to achieve much more, even if it takes much more effort. If you aren't consumed by the crucible of manhood, then you'll emerge a true master. Pic related, done by one guy, no team. He's getting his own anime this year.

...You know, for as much as you just hyped that up, I was expecting better than "pretty good at shading and hatching effects."

Like, maybe something on the level of Miura or Murata in terms of technical ability. Moebius or Mike Mignola in terms of style? Maybe a Toriyama-level lock on action and flow, as well as page-to-page pacing?

Then again, you just implied people like Tarpé Mills and Rumiko Takahashi had it easier than male creators because they could just bat their eyelashes, so I'm not sure why I expected better for the work of a "True Master."
