>Next: Simpsons Bible Stories
Previous thread: >>88011724
It's weird. On /tv/, they think this episode is GOAT and hilarious, whereas on other forums I've been to, like NoHomers or Dead Society, everyone hates it for being another "jerkass Homer" zany adventure.
Does /tv/ have better or worse taste than most?
>>88024153
>post-season 9
>>88024115
Maude died, Krabappel died, Bleeding Gums Murphy died, Dr. Marvin Monroe "died" (but now he's alive? a zombie simpsons season brought him back), Homer's mom died, Fat Tony died
They do kill off characters.
>>88024226
Dr. Nick is dead.
>>88024239
Nope, season after the movie brought him back.
>>88024175
NoHomers and Dead Homer Society are too far up their own asses to enjoy fun because for them it's more about why the Simpsons suck than whether or not the jokes are funny.
>>88024190
S10 is okay
Oh fuck I forgot the doorbell sideplot
>>88024175
>expecting /tv/ to have good taste ever
/tv/ is just an offshoot of /pol/ at this point. They don't give a damn if a show is good, they just care if it panders to their opinions or not.
I'm gonna stay up for the japan ep and sleep 4-5 hours for work.
>>88024226
>Dr. Marvin Monroe "died" (but now he's alive?
There was the Marvin Monroe Memorial Hospital and he stopped showing up for a while but nobody ever confirmed that he died.
>>88024226
>Fat Tony died
And was immediately replaced by another guy who looks and acts exactly like him, has the same job, the same name, and the same voice actor.
Yep, really shaking up the status quo, there.
>>88024278
It's this one that brings him back.
>>88024280
Hey, that was FIT Tony.
>>88024226
Didn't Kursty's Dad die as well
>>88024305
I didn't want to mention that one just because of how much of a shitty stunt that was.
>>88024301
Yeah, but then he got fat, so they started calling him Fat Tony.
I mean, that could have been a clever way to make fun of the show's never-changing status quo, but they played it way too straight.
>>88024278
He literally just shows up in a later episode and when Marge says she thought he died he says, "No, I was just sick." And that's the end of it.
>>88024301
Then it was Fit Fat Tony
>>88024313
Wait, was that when they were hyping up killing off someone? I heard of that but never saw the episode.
>>88024344
Well then there you go anon, he was clearly just sick. So sick and absent that the complete lack of communication conveyed the message that he was dead, a message so poorly transmitted that it resulted in a hospital being constructed in his name.
>>88024364
Yeah, it was a season premiere or something.
I think it was the season that premiered right after the Every Simpsons Ever marathon too.
>>88024364
Yes, they hyped up that they were starting the season off with KILLING SOMEBODY WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAH with all the promotional material and marketing making it look like it was an important character (further stated by a "hint" being that the voice actor had won an award for the role)
Turns out it was Krusty's shitty unimportant irrelevant dad.
>>88024391
Everybody knew it was going to be Krusty's dad before the episode though.
Because I think they put out eight characters and told us it would be one of those eight and one of them was Krusty's dad.
>most season 10 episodes are just "homer and bart do LE WACKY ADVENTURE while marge and lisa have a boring B-plot at home doing normie things"

Oh my gosh it could be anyone what a mystery, golly such suspense.
Bye, Davey
We're into the bad episodes now, yeah?
>>88024875
I would say we aren't there yet. But getting there. Like if people think Season 10 is bad, 20 and above makes it look like a masterpiece
>>88024875
>>88024901

>>88025011
On the commentaries, Matt Groening said he hated all the gravelly voiced characters and tried to get them all phased out. The only ones he could get rid of were Marge's family.
>>88024901
Nah, the worst seasons are 13-17. There's SOME improvement after that. It never becomes as consistently brilliant as the classic years, but it becomes watchable, and there are one or two legit great episodes per season.
Whereas the mid-teen seasons are pretty much all trash.

What season are we on now?
A lot of people seem to like this episode but I don't.
It could've been a touching Bart/Grandpa story, but like most Scully episodes, it instead wasted time on silly antics and one of the lamest guest stars.
>>88025292
What do you mean by Scully episode?
And now for the poop that ruins the cake.
>>88024153
I have an admission, /co/.
I genuinely love this Maximum Homerdrive. I don't know why, I just really enjoy it. It's fun.
Why is it so reviled?
>>88024278
>>88024286
Marvin Monroe is such an early-seasons character in design. Compared to even characters introduced around Season 5 he looks so cartoonish and surreal.
>>88025432
It's a funny episode but not particularly well written and some pretentious nerds who are determined to find fault with the show have singled that episode out.
Same with Homer's Enemy and The Principal and the Pauper. I'd argue that The Great Money Caper is also a victim but nobody likes giving credit to season 12 episodes so I let that one slide usually.
They tried to do it to Marge Be Not Proud too but that didn't take.
>It's all your childhood dogs!
Fuck you. The deadening emptiness my dog left behind when he passed still lives with me to this day.
>>88025514

>>88025300
Mike Scully was the showrunner for seasons 9-12.
>>88025595
Ah, okay. Thought it was a reference to the X-Files episode.
>Noodles the Champaign Clown
Monty Can't buy Me love, another eh episode.
Luckily, there are two great episodes coming up to wrap the season up well.
Season 11 is coming up in an hour.
To me it's an even bigger drop in quality than s10, and it's why I think they should go back to the old model of showrunners only getting 2 seasons so they don't burn out too much.
>>88025468
>some pretentious nerds who are determined to find fault with the show have singled that episode out
I've noticed this about Simpsons fans, actually.
I know it gets bad, but people seem to act like past Homer's Enemy the show immediately becomes an unwatchable mess. There are still a fair few laughs in Season 9 onwards, it's just that with a few exceptions, those episodes aren't so memorable that you seek to rewatch them.
An episode I am fond of is S11 "The Mansion Family", where home throws a party on Mr. Burns yacht in international waters. To this day I eat honeydew melon over cantaloupe.
Bart get's a F is the best simpson's episode, prove me wrong.
Protip: You can't.

you can tell this is the point where it started to go to shit since someone actually wrote that and no one else challenged how fucking stupid it is.
I've always liked Grift of the Magi tho, that's a good episode.
>>88027687
Is that the episode where Homer starts a bike club and steals a name from another club and they take Marge?

>>88029019

THIS is the problem. The fact that the Simpsons got to that point. It goes to show that the crew writing the show had too many frauds in it.

hmm.
>>88030699
It's funny how Flanders and Groundskeeper Willie both have average bodies with their clothes on. Bit when you take off their shirts they're ripped.
>>88030806
Both of them usually wear loose clothing (overalls and a sweater) so you can't really see their bodies.
Why would Comic Book Guy care if kids take comics he threw out?
Huh, Barney's a racist when he's drunk.
In addition to being shit as an episode, it makes an even bigger mistake because it treats a character's flaw seriously instead of a joke, which destroys them.
Alcoholism isn't funny, nor is child abuse. You can't treat the joke alcoholic as an actual alcoholic.
I still really like this one for as small a way as they did it, it did shake up the status quo a bit. It goes with Behind the Laughter as a good episode for a final season.
>stand by me
>Final Fantasy

Why does anyone care if raccoons get in their garbage?
>Hurt everyone.
>>88031052
Not this episode, I was referring to Homer's choking Bart all the time. It's played for laughs but is obviously a terrible thing taken seriously.
I think a later season does actually show the choking having some bad effect on Bart but I'm not sure.
The amazing thing about Zombie Simpsons is that every episode is the worst episode. Each one brings the show to new lows.
But Homer knows what coffee is...
>>88031053
They strew it all over the place, generally, making a mess. Also, raccoons are common carriers of rabies, so just having them around is bad. If they can get free food, they stick around.
>>88031252
They also tend to burst open during sex.
>>88031116
Oh, that episode. It has Kareem Abdul Jabar and Paul Rudd.
When did Lenny and Carl go from just being Homer's buddies/coworkers to being gay lovers.
What if the next Simpson's marathon was played in reverse? Start with the newer seasons and go back?
Instead of people jumping ship, people would tune in as it went on.
>>88031359
Sometimes the love is unrequited on Carl's end.
>>88031448
That is brilliant. Perhaps on a leap year?
If I'm not mistaken this was a leap year.
>>88031273
Was The Simpsons already starting to get regularly BTFO by King of the Hill in ratings and reception at this point?
>FX is owned by Fox
>for some reason they have to pay Fox for the rights to air The Simpsons
Nani?
I know it goes without saying, but this episode makes no damn sense. If Homer is relaxing by having fun and partying, what the hell is Marge angry about?
Fuck, now Kid Rock is here
Do you have a new retrospective appreciation for season 10-13 now that you know about modern Zombie Simpsons and what it's capable of?
>>88031547
Nope. They're still garbage, it's just that in comparison to the utter shit that comes later they can appear to have some value.
Oh wow. Homer nearly killing his entire family, great.
>>88031547
Some for season 10 because I realized I remember more episodes from it than I initially thought.
For that same reason, I feel like seasons 6-7 are my favorites, based on personal feelings alone.
11 seems to be as bad as I remember. We'll see about 12-13.
No listening. You hear me?
Why are they all talking with light Southern accents?
Even with all the hate these seasons get before season 20 there are some good episodes/funny moments sprinkled in there.
This is like an endless nightmare. Why would a just and loving God allow this?
>No listenin,' you hear me?
>Um... no?
>You just don't learn, do you?

>>88032489
It's better that way.
I love how Frink and the writers behave like Homer was being a jerk when he was just being honest with Lisa, she sucks at dancing and doesn't deserve to be pampered since her "dream" is only based on a childish fantasy about how she's going to get some handsome man to marry her.
>>88032549
That handsome man marrying didn't't really play into her motivation. Nor does getting parried in general. But it was childish that it was based on a movie.

godly dubbing
the jokes were translated wonderfully, those that didn't work were bowdlerized beautifully into something that the latino people could understand (not only mexican, argentinian or colombian people, but the entire continent). It was basically a work of love; the entire dubbing cast was paid shit.
The first dub is so loved that for latinos the division between Golden/Silver Age Simpsons and Zombie Simpsons is at the start of Season 16 where the voice actors were replaced.
>>88024153
I've always thought of 1 - 8 as classic era and 9 - 12 as the era of steady decline (with some really good episodes and some really flat out bad ones) and 13 - 14 as beginning of the true zombie era (not to mention they went digital in Season 14 onwards). Season 15 is the last one I've seen all the way though I think.

There are a good few episodes per season now arguably more than in 13-17 but there are much more mediocre episodes and torturously unfunny ones.

That last season of King of the Hill was kind of a stinker.
It was lucky Fox cancelled it when they did because the writers were clearly running out of ideas.
Kind of like the Simpsons but Fox stepped in and put an end to it.
>you will never have a square pan
>we're 12 seasons in
Did this go too far?
>>88033881
Just far enough.
>>88033881
it was supposed to be a scary episode and it's one of those actually unsettling Treehouse of Horror episodes so I would say they achieved their objective
>>88033726
A few of the early episodes were TV-14 in syndication (and some TV-G too), but because everything from Season 9 and early was made before TV ratings were implemented, FOX had no ratings data associated with the episodes in their database. So rather than going in and individually rating all of these episodes, FXX just slapped a blanket TV-PG-D on every one of them.
>sugar wall
Was this slang back then? I've only heard it relatively recently. Was this innocent?
>>88033919
This proving how stupid and arbitrary the whole thing is.
Night of the Living Dolphin is considered a classic segment right?
Why dont they just shoot the dolphins?
Why don't they just call the Japanese?
Why dont they just get the eagles to carry them to Mordor?

Was this episode Lisa's turning point to simpsons!Brian? Becoming a buddhist was one thing, and becoming vegetarian was another thing

So this marathon has me feeling nostalgic. Are any of the Simpsons comics worth checking out? Or is it just merchandise?

>>88036523
That was never a period that existed.
At best you could say that the first 3 seasons of Family Guy were slightly better than the Simpsons episodes that aired at the same time.
And even that would be arguable.
The worst part is this "joke" wouldn't feel out of place in CURRENT Family Guy. It's like the writers felt the neccesity to be edgy to get back the viewers taken by Family Guy success
>>88036523
Where was Family Guy at this point?
>>88036596
Quit kidding yourself.
>>88036600
season 1 or 2
>>88036599
>Family Guy success
Reminder, the first 3 seasons of Family Guy weren't successful, that's why it got cancelled.
So Becky with the good hair was a Simpsons reference?
>>88036615
I'm not.
Those first 3 seasons of Family Guy aren't as good as people remember.
>>88036599
>Family Guy's ""success""
Why the fuck do you think it got cancelled, scrub?
>>88036652
They were better than the Simpsons at the time.
>>88035743
Simpsons comics probably never get as bad as the show's worst but also never as good as its best, since a comic based on a product from a different medium is naturally going to be dependent on the original/derivative to some extent.
What's interesting is that they make a point to not use episode ideas from the show, so it's not cashing in on or recycling well-known episodes or anything, The writers on the show also don't read the comics or probably even know of their existence, but there have been a few times plots have lined up just through coincidence.
If you find them for free online they might be worth checking out for the novelty but there's no reason to go nuts and buy them all. I never really knew about them until recently and so to me they have this weird, officially sanctioned fan fiction feel.
>>88036652

>>88036699
>this weird, officially sanctioned fan fiction feel.
That is EXACTLY how I would describe them, well put.
>>88036623
>>88036662
are you stupid? Simpsons episodes are written 1 year before the episode is even aired and in 1999 South Park and Family Guy were the rage. Against the crude humor of South Park and Family's Guy the Simpsons humor felt childish.
We all know who would eventually win but at that point executives and writers were unable to predict how much would a fad last. It's the entire fucking reason we got Radio Bart, an episode based on a real life case almost 2 years after the real life event it was based in.
>Don't touch me! Nothing gives you that right!
There's something satisfying about that line.
>>88036761
Scully, come on, you're embarrassing yourself.
>>88036699
They still make the comics. You can find em at most supermarkets here in England.
I used to read em donkeys ago, I can't recall the actual comic strips at all so they can't be that good but I did enjoy the letters page. It could be quite funny.
>>88036761
well it's not like these are gonna get any better, and those first 3 seasons of FG are quite funny in comparison to what we're watching now
>>>seth macfarlaneshills
>>88036771
>1999 South Park and Family Guy were the rage.
I'll give you South Park because that was legit popular.
But nobody was watching Family Guy and most people were of the opinion that it was a Simpsons ripoff. Which it basically was. That's why it got cancelled.
You don't cancel something if it's insanely popular.
Family Guy didn't start getting popular until it aired on Adult Swim and people started buying the DVDs.
>>88036771
I dont think Family Guy really got big until after it's first cancellation.
South Park was huge in '99 though. It had the movie that year.
>>88036830
he wrote some great eps of Johnny Bravo
>>88036840
>>88036855
well, I guess that in the case of Family Guy I was wrong but there was a catalyst for the edgyness/weirdness of season 12 so I will chalk it up to South Park
This episode is worth it for Homer's web page alone
I actually like this episode.

Shouldn't the people they're conning recognize Homer and Bart enough to know they're gypping? Springfield only has so many recurring characters.
Why did they kill of Maude?
My dick misses her.
>>88037827
At this point it's been repeatedly proven that the people of Springfield are all a bunch of morons.
>>88037850

>>88037850
Pay dispute with her voice actress.
They tried to have someone else play Maude but it didn't sound right. If you pay attention to Maude's last few appearances you can hear it.
Years later they got that voice actress back on the show but they couldn't unkill Maude.
>>88037908
>couldn't unkill Maude
"Maude wanted out of the christian housewife life so she paid the medics off to pronounce her dead."
There, she's unkilled, and no one cared.

>>88024153
its funny, watching episode 24 of season 7
its that "what i listened to is old" thing, but yet they are listening to fucking peter frampton at a concert for "cool bands" in 1996.
also, it's scary now that shit i heard from 1990 to 1995 is on the oldies stations yet they will NOT acknowledge the 90s yet. its always the hits of the 70s, 80s and more!
It gets annoying when they keep making those sex innuendo fake-out jokes.
I love this fake movie.
>>88038423
I'm happy!
>>88038376
>its always the hits of the 70s, 80s and more

>You did itNibbles! Now chew through my ball sack.
Great episode. Bart and Skinner are always a fun combo.

>It's a pipe bomb. To blow up Planned Parenthood.
Are we past the CGI halloween episode? I always forget when that comes.
This episode is fucking hilarious. I remember watching it alot as a kid.

It's so tragic the way they hopped on pop...
I never knew the difference between Bill Paxton and Bill Pullman either.
Doesn't this entire episode contradict the Simpson Gene?

I think the first time is just the joke of treating dessert like eating vegetables and the second is just doubling down.
I bet Sideshow Bob won the prison rodeo
>>88040544
>>88041317
I think they're just silly. Homer gets excited about one portmanteau of smock and apron, but is unenthused by the other. The idea that eating a sundae is used as a punishment like finishing your vegetables is strange and perhaps chuckle-worthy.
Comic Book Guy did nothing wrong
>that sauerkraut joke
You know, I was really excited to see that scene because as a child I never got the joke.
Almost 2 decades later and I still don't get it.
Is the joke just "sauerkraut is gross"?

I don't know how that passes for funny to those writers of Zombie Simpsons. Does Matt even have anything to do with the show anymore?
Yeah, by 2001 Tom Clancy was going downhill. The Bear and The Dragon was a bit of a rehash of Red Storm Rising but with even sillier political elements and anti-Communist messages.
Come to think of it- everything went downhill in 2001. That year fucking sucked.

Some of us will continue to the bitter end.
The Simpsons is like your favorite Friend growing up. The first few times you meet them (seasons 1 & 2) they are kind of odd but you like them well enough.
Then they are your greatest companion for years and years (seasons 3 - 8), going on adventures and having fun. Then It seems like they are sometimes a little fatigued (seasons 9 - 12) but, oh well, things will be fine soon.
...but they just dont get better do they? Slowly, ever so slowly, you watch the life fade in their eyes as you watch on in desperation (13 - 14). Then they die and you find yourself sitting there staring at the hollow husk that was your best friend. We just need to see the autopsy report at this stage, try to figure out why it all went so wrong.
Eventually somebody that looks and acts somewhat like your old friend does show up in your life. It's better than nothing, and he really does try to be entertaining at times, but your new friend won't replace the old...
...and every now and then he just starts jerking off to Lena Dunham and Lady Gaga for some fucking reason!

They're both lame
>>88044451
It gets worse at times, but there were some pretty good ones even further on.
I agree with the opinion some hold that the movie really was the swan song. For some reason it seems that way for a lot of animated series; the writers put all their ideas and effort into a major film, and then they're spent.
Its weird how Mad Magazine was in one of the WTC towers during the NY episode and in this episode their offices get bombed in a different building
