After Rightclops saved the Mutants, the world is divided over whether or not he was being a douche about it. And into this dark time, comes the affirmative action squa-I mean, the Unity Squad.
This, is Remender's Uncanny Avengers, his sequel to Uncanny X-Force. It's a more uneven series that lacks the strong character development that really made X-Force something special, but the action...hoo boy. There's some fantastic beats to the series, and they make the flaws worth getting through.
Oh shit nice welcome back anon

That was a pretty shitty speech, sniktbub.
I've realized about the latest volumes of this book, every time I try to read Remender's run i get bored and stop around "Call me alex" bc it's really stupid, but anyway this book works as an Avengers book but not a XBook
>>86894382
>maintaining your principles when you're up against a wall is the only time it really means anything
PRETTY SURE you're paraphrasing Cyclops from God Loves, Man Kills, wolverine...
Are you going to be doing axis? If so, tie ins too or just main event?
Thor is pretty much the only thing about this series that is consistently great.
>>86894411
Xavier clearly didn't expect the dream to be realized in his lifetime, 1. because that's not how these movements work and 2. because he's already died like 5 times
>>86894475
Yep, I'm doing SIXIS. Probably just the main issues, but we'll see when we get there.
>storytime starts right when I get off work
Hell yea dude
Get ready for literally every character in this series to be a massive asshole (except Thor).
>>86894513
Havok is so low on the list of "X-Men potential leaders" it's frustrating. tho it is funny to read it as Cap being unintentionally racist "yeah you're like your brother right"
they're like the Final Horsemen, only shit
>>86894677
part of the reason Wanda and Pietro became Avengers was to make up for their time in the Brotherhood. Which they never believed in but Mags manipulated them (Oh I saved your lives work for me)
>>86894751
i love Remender's villain designs, they always have a cool kinda retro bronzeish age feel.
lolwhat
This series has some pretty great covers
Not doing the recaps this time because I have no nostalgia for these ones (originally read this series in trade)
Did the red skull ever fight the x-men or meet Xaiver before this? Just seems a bit out of nowhere for him to aqquire his brain

Magneto once locked him in a basement pretty far underground with a bucket and left him
>>86894971

Um no, that was Cassandra Nova, a mutant with a grudge against Xavier.
I love Uncanny Avengers. The next arc is great.
>>86894899
>picking the pretty people
both Angel and Storm have mutant powers that are literally "they're so fucking beautiful"storm should be leading this team
Poor Avalanche, why'd he have to die? One of the few villains who'd managed to stay as a good guy for a decent amount of time.
>>86895099
Storm is a great choice. Havok is just...I dunno why Remender picked him. Is Havok his husbando?
>>86894282
Im gonna buy this omni cause I already own the rest of the run but I'd like to read it first. You got a DL link OP?
I love the idea of a Red Skull clone having to get caught up on what happened to the world in his absence. Do you think he posted on /pol/ during that time?
>muties get out reeeeeeeeeee

Probably because he's Scott's brother so you can wring some drama out of that.

Im still waiting for based bob to come back from the whr and save us from all this current shit
>>86895150
You'd think, right? But I don't the two interact, like, once, after the first issue.
>>86895132
I'm still not sure why Remender felt the need to make this Red Skull a clone that only had memories up to 1942. That means he has virtually no history with any character, and he barely knows Steve. The original Red Skull had met Magneto, was buried alive by him.
It gets weirder since later Nick Spencer treats him like he has the full memories of the Red Skull, since he remembers having the Cosmic Cube that Kobik comes from.
When this was coming out, I was waiting for a character to interrupt all this "muh xavier" stuff with "um, do you guys not remember that xavier was actually a gigantic asshole?"
>>86895242
Dude just went on comicvine and read up on his own history during his spare time
>>86895242
i was trying to remember if this Skull and the Skull currently doing HYDRA stuff were the same.
damn lotta nazi clones out there marvel
>>86895207
Yeah, seems like wasted potential. I think mainly it was to cause conflict with the other members because everyone hated him for what Cyclops did etc.
Also, I kind of wish Cap wasn't in this book. I mean, it makes some sense because they're fighting Red Skull, but I wish he'd had him set up the team and then leave it with Alex. It goes from "Alex trying to prove his leadership skills" to "Alex sits sullenly in the corner while Cap leads"
>>86895263
no one ever actually acknowledges how Xavier is the worst.
>>86895187
>An immense source of power
Remender acknowledges that Wanda is NOT a reality-warping lunatic like Bendis tried to make her, she was only that powerful because she was posessed by the Life Force.
>>86895282
They are, the Hydra Skull still has Xavier's abilities.
>>86895296
I can never decide if Xavier being a cunt is actually his personality, or if it's just the result of every writer trying to put their own spin on it.

>>86895341
I mean, even back in the Lee/Kirby stuff he's mind wiping and faking deaths.
>>86895187
Thanks mane and yeah its all up to date and adblock should stop those. Also $50 for 21 issues? Marvel acts like jews about everything.
>>86895352
True. That stuffs all a bit difficult to judge him by though, I think most of the stuff Lee and Kirby did the characters often came off as... unfriendly if taken at face value. Like, Xavier would pull stuff like that, but it would usually just be taken in stride.
I don't like the overwrought narration in this book. Sometimes it's ok, but honestly I think the book would have been better without them.
>>86895398
I agree.
That said, this page looks really cool.
>>86895383
>most of the stuff Lee and Kirby did the characters often came off as... unfriendly if taken at face value
This. Reed Richards was pretty fucking sexist, even for the time, but everyone's cool with it.
>>86895132
Amusingly, this Red Skull is the least racist version ever. Sure, he's genocidal against mutants, but he has a bunch of different ethnic minorities working for him.
>>86894282
I just really don't like Wolverine as an Avenger, but I guess there have been worse
>>86895419
Beyond just sexist, nigga used the Ultimate Nullifier on his own son without really batting an eye.
I think it's just a difference in narrative delivery honestly.
And don't get me started on fucking Magneto. Guy was hilariously evil.
>>86895263
Yeah its understandable for some like beast or iceman who has known him since they were young and saved them from being lynched so would still think of him in a postive light but for most of the others like illyana who he treated like crap or all the times he faked his death or altered memories to manipluate them you think some might hold a grudge
>>86895099
Storm and Brother Voodoo were both picked by Remender for this team but for some reason editorial wouldn't okay it for the starting roster.
>>86895398
i feel like it took a little bit but eventually Remender nailed it. there was an AvX issue I think he did that had a ton of it that I loved.
>>86895461
So, how do the civilians know that the S-Men aren't mutants? They sure look like mutants.
>>86895461

>>86895489

These people are literally not thinking for themselves.
>>86895480
To be fair, Brother Voodoo has no place on a team meant to unite the Avengers and the mutants, since he is neither. He feels out of place in later volumes.
>>86895512
>>86895536
>Go be Captain America
>Go be Wolverine
SUCH GREAT LEADERSHIP
>>86895536
I definitely feel like Remender was going for a kind of Silver Age narration feel, which is why it's so overwrought sounding. Don't think it really matches what's going on though.
>>86895419
Ummm...Reed respects women. Like Abe Lincoln's mom!!
>random turtle man is one of the hardest times The God of Fucking Thunder has ever been hit
Yeah, alright, whatever, dude.
>>86895480
well at least he tried.
also Beast should be on this team as someone who has ties to both
>>86895529
Sure, but Storm was a fucking lock. Easily a better choice for team leader than Havok. I can only imagine editorial didn't want Remender getting his weird all over a highly marketable character.Weird that they didn't want any black characters on the flagship book about diversity, though. Maybe they didn't want the character who was being set up as the token mutant to literally be black.
>>86895615
>Honest John
There's something hilarious about that.
>>86895563
The Red Skull is pretty good at dodging
>>86895589
Wasn't the Turtle Man casually killed by Magneto?
>>86895623
fuck you're probably close to the truth. and then remender doubled down when people thought it was strange to have such an aryan fuck talking about accepting the differences in people
>>86894282
My biggest issues with this at the time were:
- The amped-up hostility between characters (this was Scarlet Witch's first chance to be in a comic in years and I didn't dig seeing her and Rogue play "dueling assholes")
- The endless delays to let Cassaday draw it, and his art wasn't even that good
They fixed the art problem when Acuña came on as the interior artist but I don't think Remender completely solved the characterization problems.
The first four issues are pretty meh tbqh.
5 is fine, 6-22 are /essentialmemendercore/ though.
Reading past 22 is a MISTAKE
>>86895611
Amen to that. Too bad Bendis had dibs on Beast when this was written.
>>86895645
>Wasn't the Turtle Man casually killed by Magneto?
Later on I think.
>>86895623
I think it was more that Jason Aaron had dibs on using her.
>>86895623
Yeah. I feel like a lot of the issues with this book was that it was meant to be a flagship title. I loved Remender fine on stuff like X-Force, but here you definitely feel like he wants to really let loose but can't.
>>86895589
oh he's a not Juggernaut
>>86895655
>>86895623
Why is your generation so fixated on race. Like how fucked up in the head are you people that this is where your mind jumps to.
>>86895645Magneto kills all the S-men as I recall. Damn shame, too. I liked those racist dicks.
>>86895659
Yeah. That part's mostly on Remender I feel, the man likes to write sad, unlikeable assholes. It's his forte.
>>86895696
Dude the bad guy in this book is a fucking super Nazi and the themes are all about coming together despite differences
One of the images is being bad, gimme a sec here folks
>>86895643
>>86895675
This reminds me of that time Magneto used some device that forced Steve Rogers to tell the truth, only to find out that Steve truly has absolutely no hatred against mutants at all. No bigotry of any kind.
This shocked him so much that he surrendered and agreed to stand trial.
>>86895480
Brother Voodoo was dead at the time because Bendis killed him off. Remender spent years trying to get permission to bring him back, finally got to do it in AXIS and then left soon after.
The cast does remind me that in 2012 there wasn't as much media controversy as there would be now about launching a book with an all-white cast. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, just that over the next few years race/diversity issues would become a much bigger part of the comics media. (This may be one reason the blowup over Havok's speech took Marvel by surprise, it was kind of new then.)
>>86895723
I understand that but I don't look at people and see "Aryan" or "black" I just see a person. I don't understand why your generation looks for race issues and divisions in everything.
>>86894282
I always loved this series, since Thor and Wolverine are my two favorite Marvel Characters and they both get great characterization and moments in this series

Wow. "Nigga" huh. Keep building up walls by reinforcing that race is an issue. I'll just keep seeing everyone as a person.
>>86895675
Remender and Brevoort made a big deal about the attempt to revive the old-fashioned third person caption in this book. (It's very Claremont X-Men or Busiek Avengers.) Remender gave up on it about halfway through, but it's kind of fun in a bombastic way.
Thought balloons and third-person captions are the two old-school devices writers are always trying to bring back and never quite succeeding.
>>86895803
Look at this Alex right here.
>>86895822
Yeah, I can understand what he was going for, but it's like when Bendis tried to revive thought-bubbles in New Avengers. This is less annoying, but it still doesn't work. I think if he cut it down to one or two narration boxes per panel it would be more effective.

There's a grain of a good idea there because Scarlet Witch is (I guess, was) probably the most famous mutie who never actually joined a mutie group. (Even Quicksilver was in X-Factor.) She and Rogue were both in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants but Wanda chose to join the assimilated Good Guy team and Rogue went with the X-Men.
But that idea really never gets developed, it's just them yelling at each other or talking about Alex's speech.

Wonder Man or Reaper?
Reaper is dead again (thanks to Vision + family)
Wonder Man is still trapped in Rogue's head
>>86895242
Original Red Skull had died in Brubakers run.
Remender wanted to use the Red Skull, but since he had died only a couple years earlier real time, he didn't want to be cheap and bring him back so soon. So he made it a clone, which also gave him free reign to characterize him how he wanted (notice how Clone Skull is more Cobra Commander like than the previous Skull).
>>86897036

Nope, he got purged on Counter-Earth in v.2, but she's got his powers still.

I found it really annoying in this opening story arc, which made me almost drop the book how intrusive it was and just dragged the action to a stand still.
That said, there's a lot less of it in the subsequent arcs, so I guess Remender learned his lesson and toned it down.

>>86895740
The other thing is that Havok's speech serves pretty well as a meta-commentary on the nature of what "mutants" are according to Marvel.
Marvel declared mutants a separate species in the past so they could save money selling action figures. Marvel took characters that were meant to serve as analogies for racial relations and tolerance and literally said they weren't human.
To cover for this, the Xmen's mo was changed from "humans born with strange abilities" to "entirely different species supplanting humanity". This ruined the analogy which the Xmen were initially created for.
In a book about Avengers and Xmen getting along, Havok giving a speech saying there is no difference between mutant and human, and that he doesn't want to be called a mutant, with all this in mind, I feel was intended as a big middle-finger to how the Xmen had been changed over time.
But then everyone freaked out, Remender included, and made a much bigger deal out of it the was necessary.

Fuck you Wanda
>>86899481
>The things he made you do to her...
Wha... What kind of things?
>>86899720
But Anon, are you suggesting something lewd?
>>86899120
The reference to alt-Steve being married to alt-Wanda, along with >>86896697, gave hope to a lot of the people who 'shipped Scarlet Witch and Captain America.
It never happened but I imagine Remender was at least toying with the possibility. It'll never happen now though.
>>86899855
Why, wha... whatever are you talking about anon? I was merely curious...
>>86894282
Oh cool, been meaning to read this, thanks OP.
>>86897631
Man I love when celestials show up
I'm glad they're not around enough to become a joke or anything
Whenever they show up it's always intense shit
>>86897760
>What do you mean YOU people
>>86897781
>a giant butthole's gonna open in the sky and take a dump on us

>>86897925
>cyclops merch
Kind of tacky jan
I'd still buy it though
>>86898077
>escape coffins
C'mon brand
I guess it'll save money on funeral costs when they eventually crash like every escape pod in fiction history ever has
>>86898150
I like the whole "gods have come to earth in search of war" above the Jesus statue
A little campy but I like it
Thanks for the story time anon. Same time tomorrow?
>>86898707
I never read this when it came out, and am glad I'm doing so now, but I had no idea at all that this was something of a sequel to x force
>>86899008
Man I love kang he's such an arrogant shithead
Has he shown up since this, besides the SHIELD tie in of secret wars

Between this book and that Uncanny Sinister Nation arc, Acuna was on a real hot streak.

>>86897520
I thought Kang was lying, and it's actually Logan himself.
>>86905638
Logan's not that old.
>>86905646
He's immortal, isn't he? I thought he was a caveman at first.
>>86905909
nah hoss. born in late 1800's. roughly around 200 years old.
>>86895069
and got BTFO'd and called out on his bullshit as far as I remember
>>86896647
She's so smug
>>86897700
>>86897728
Since Genocide came back, is there any hope that Jeb Lee (Famine) and Decimus (War) could come back too?
>>86897019

>>86897019
Were there news about that? Because I didn't read anything about that and I really want to see how he recovered from the condition he was left in during Wolverines
>>86895696
It's the Jews. Not even memeing.
>>86895692
He is more like the wall, it seems.
>>86896864
