No, well, yes, of course. But I mean, it's actually well done: it gives contrast and volume well enough, it makes the image clear and it's not a confusing cloud of shadows and white spots. And gradients are well applied, when they need to be applied. You're not getting a lot of rubber shining faces.

As a modest drawfag, I'm really enjoying this particular thread, more than often.

Deadly Hands of Kung Fu was primarily a Kung Fu comic. I'm skipping most of them, but half of the issues are about various martial arts and artists. People were here for the art more than the characters and the plots, so they are meant to all have particularly good art.

But I don't have an eye for such things like you do, so take my words with a grain of salt, but look in the other threads.

It was fairly common in the 1970s. Guys like Claremont, Jime Starlin, Steve Englehart, Bill Mantlo, Roy Thomas, Neal Adams, etc. would use it from time to time. I'm personally not a fan of the technique, and I think it was either Jim Shooter or Mark Gruenwald who basically got Marvel writers to stop using it because they felt it was too hokey or something.

The Curtis Magazines had some great art. Besides Nebres on Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, check out the Shanna the She-Devil strip Tony DeZuniga drew for Rampaging Hulk #9. There's a bunch of these lesser known gems in the Curtis Magazines catalogue, though they've mostly been overshadowed by the work of John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala on Savage Sword of Conan, which was the flagship Curtis Magazines title.
