I'm fairly certain that the Shang-Chi stories that appeared in Deadly Hands of Kung Fu were originals made expressly for the magazine, not reprints of the stuff that appeared in Master of Kung Fu.

Deadly Hands of Kung Fu was specifically for Marvel chop-socky stories that may not be able to get approval from the Comics Code Authority for whatever reason (drug use, violence, etc.).

Yeah, Moench was really passionate about Shang-Chi. Master of Kung Fu was one of those titles where you're just kind of surprised when you realize that Marvel published it for as long as it did (the holder of that crown has to be Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos... Marvel published that series for 18 years from 1963 to 1981, although the last few years were basically just a series of reprints).

I have those on Blu-Ray (or maybe DVD, I forget). I seriously need to watch them. There's a lot of classic Kung Fu movies I should look for. I'd ask /tv/ for recs, but all they seem to talk about in the three times I've been there is cuckolding and teenage girl's feet.

Ooooh! One more issue before Rudy Nebres takes over the art chores, if I remember correctly. Both Neal Adams and John Buscema spoke very highly of his skills as an artist (especially as an inker). Adams called him the best ink artist he'd ever worked with and Buscema (who was sort of like Alex Toth in that he could be very critical of his peers) insisted that if he wasn't going to ink his own pencils on Savage Sword of Conan, that Marvel should always go with Nebres.

I think Nebres was still in the process of developing his style when he worked on Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, though. He wouldn't really hit his peak until he started working for Warren Publishing.

This scene just makes me think of that bit in Superior Spider-Man where SpOck kills that guy in cold blood. Due to the nature of cape comics, we know he'd never be able to get the help he needs, but in-universe, it has to feel like a punch in the gut.

Great choice. I personally think that Lone Wolf and Cub is an especially important read for any young comics artist (or even aspiring storyboard artist) looking to learn pacing in visual storytelling. It's decompressed, but in a way that serves the story—think of the directorial style of Sergio Leone or Werner Herzog.

Word of warning, though: All the official Lone Wolf and Cub English translations from Dark Horse Manga feature "flipped pages" so that they can be read conventionally from left-to-right (the original manga was oriented right-to-left). This isn't really a problem unless you're a purist for adaptations, but in a manga that features a lot of swordplay, it is occasionally annoying... like the script will refer to someone as being a left-handed swordfighter, but the art (being flipped) will show the character as holding his sword in his right hand.

All the other Kojima-Koike collaborations (Samurai Executioner, Lady Snowblood) are available "unflipped" in English from Dark Horse, though, as well as the sequel New Lone Wolf and Cub.

I imagine there's something in the original license agreement that prevents Dark Horse from issuing newer, unflipped editions of the original Lone Wolf and Cub series, seeing as how Dark Horse has already released "unflipped" editions of stuff they've previously released like Masamune Shirow's Appleseed and Orion.

Miller also did the covers for the original "floppy" English editions that First Comics published back in the 1980s. He was one of the first mainstream US comics pros to talk up manga in the comics press, and from what I recall, he had some role in First Comics landing the English-language reprint rights.

As for the omnibus editions, there are pros and cons. On the plus side, the page dimensions are significantly larger than in the original TPBs (some of the detail can be hard to see in the original TPBs). On the negative side (and this may just be personal preference for me), the omnibus volumes can be unwieldy to read (they're 700 pages or so per volume) and from my own experience, once you get that thick with a paperback, the binding doesn't hold up as well to repeated reading. But hey, I guess you can just read the online scans/digital rips and keep the omnibus volumes in reasonably pristine condition.
