I just can't wrap my mind around Steven being able to fuse, but not reform. Fusion makes sense for regular gems because their bodies are essentially projections and it makes sense on why Rose and Greg couldn't fuse. Steven and Connie are flesh babies though so it's nuts to me.

I think gems tend to have either a weapon or a power.

Jasper, Ruby, Pearl. Amethyst have weapons, whereas Lapis and Sapphire have powers (hydrokinesis and future sight)

Amethyst and Ruby would probably be able to use the wrecking ball as a combo of Ruby's gauntlet and Amethyst's whip.
