Out of universe is that in an earlier draft, Vader was a general who was demoted to Stormtrooper for some reason. That's why he's in armor. That was a very early draft before Vader was an injured cyborg.
Tarkin's line is a remnant of that draft.

I'm optimistic for the near future of Star Wars. I think TFA will be too safe and boring plot wise but I don't think it will necessarily be a bad movie. I'm hyped to see the new aliens and all the effects and whatnot. I'm hyped for Episode 8 and 9 though since from Episode 8's casting call they're clearly making a completely original story instead of rehashing ESB.

However after that point I'm not so sure if I can get excited. Disney recently said they will make Star Wars movies every year forever so I fear it will get really old fast and worst case scenario Star Wars will be officially dead in 15 years. Plus they're doing a piss poor job as far as Star Wars games are concerned.

Tarkin was basically Vader's only equal. He was head honcho of the outer rim force, the pursuit of the rebels and was in command of the death star. He has no direct authority over Vader because Vader answers to nobody other than the Emperor. Vader similarly has no authority via chain of command because he's not in the chain of command, but retains obedience through the sheer terror he inflicts on others. It isn't until Empire Strikes Back that he gets command of a Star Destroyer and in Return of the Jedi he kinda takes a back-seat driver position on his Super Star Destroyer, The Executor.

Tarkin, in that moment, didn't want a dead man in the middle of the meeting and he knew Vader had gotten the point across. It isn't yanking the leash, it's calming the beast.

Loosing Tarkin was an equal, if not greater blow to the empire than if Darth Vader had taken his place, with Tarkin surviving, and the Dark Lord dieing. Both were utterly integral to control and the execution of the master plan.

Tarkin rules with his brilliant mind and calculating strategy, Darth Vader rules with his merciless ferocity and bone-chilling terror, but both of them are scary to outsiders, friend and foe alike.

Vader respects that. A lesser man would've ended up being choked right alongside Motti. Plus, Vader can't go ahead and undermine Tarkin's authority in the middle of his own command. Even if he wasn't sorta friends with Tarkin, it's a real dick move to render the commander of the most important mobile space station in the entire empire completely useless by undermining his authority infront of his own men. Gotta keep order in the ranks.

They never said anything about annual movies. There will be annual ones until 2020, but after that, it's unknown. Most likely, it'll start being every other year from that point onwards (and possibly a live-action tv show alongside) and then if Star Wars somehow declines in popularity, which I personally don't think will happen, it has too much cultural relevance and bridges the gap between generations. But if that somehow happened, then maybe they'll start to be released every 3 years or so.

But they're not just going to stop, that's for sure. The Disney marketing machine is going to do whatever they can to keep Star Wars relevant and popular forever.

Personally, the LSG has convinced me that the franchise is in good hands. While I do think they're playing it a little safe right now, I do know that it'll get more interesting as time goes on. We have a lot to look forward to.

This year alone we have been given a plethora of content, and I don't think any of it has been bad so far. Lackluster maybe. Battlefront, and the two recent Rebels episodes come to mind. But certainly not BAD.

As long as they maintain this level of quality as a minimum, I'll be happy. Yes, oversaturation of content is worrying. I'm personally worried about there being 50 books within the next decade to keep up with. But as of right now, I trust in what they're doing.

To be fair, he's right. TFA doesn't really seem as good as most people are hyping it up to be. It just seems like a rehash of Episode 4 where you'll know every plot point before it happens in the movies because you'll be matching it up with the events of Episode 4. It's one of those movies where I like to say the lore is better than the story. What it brings to the table (First Order, Resistance, the new main characters, Jakku, Maz Kanata, etc) are probably going to be really cool, but the story (an old man, a person trying to get off a shit planet, a sassy person, and a cocky pilot join a rebellion to destroy an empire's plane- I mean, star destroying weapon) isn't that great. This is literally basic storytelling. Did you actually think ANH had an original plot? It was arguably just as much of a "rehash" as TFA is, but it was executed so incredibly well that no one would ever think about criticising these story beats that were already used in other stories.

I've seen the opposite so far. In Season 1 the rebels never took the Empire seriously until the Inquisitor showed up, and even then it was just a Scooby-Doo chase up until the end when Tarkin showed up.

In Season 2 they actually suffer more setbacks and get into deeper shit, like with the blockade and barely getting away from the two new inquisitors. But their escapes and wins are also becoming more egregious in turn; getting away from three AT-ATs because Kallus was being retarded was probably the worst, right up there with the convenient superlaser B-Wing. So it looks like they're doing better overall.

This whole show really does piss me off because the rebels actually getting the shit kicked out of them and getting away by the skin of their teeth would make for a way more engaging series. Most fondly remembered kids series are the ones where the good guys weren't assured victories almost every episode.

Many of the characters do have motivations and are pretty well rounded, except for Zeb. We need to see his past and who he was, to better understand who he is now.

The writing is subpar at times, but it's enjoyable and nor for us, the show is for children, you have to remember that. Disney also owns it and the S&P for this thing is probably pretty strict. But it needs to start ramping it up though, the writers need to take lessons from Tron Uprising.

Disney is being a bunch of cheapskates and not giving them the budgeting it deserves, also Lucas isn't giving them any money out of his own pocket. The animation is pretty good, better than a lot of CGI series out there in the past and present.

There are good kids shows, like Beast Wars and Gargoyles, and bad kids shows, like Fanboy and Chumchum. Rebels is strictly mediocre at the moment when it could be top tier very easily by virtue of being Star Wars. I think that's what bothers people the most.

But I'll talk, the animation in Rebels is pretty damn good, it has empty sets and at times reuses animations such as walking sequences and when the ships enter hyperspace, but there is a reason for that, it has a smaller budget. Rebels doesn't have Lucasbux funding it, which is a shame and the creators of the show have to be smart with what they're doing or else they'll run out of money.

I'm blaming Disney for this mess though, they have the money to give them, they're just being Jews about it. As well as shoving Rebels on XD, rather than the regular Disney Channel.

The difference is when you're taking inspiration from something in the same series it's in, in a franchise that's selling point is that it's set in a huge galaxy and has had tons of movies/books/games/comics/shows/etc showing tons of vastly different stories in this universe. Are you really telling me they couldn't have done a story about a group of Republic soldiers getting lost on some planet and fighting a cult that's trying to destroy the galaxy? Or about a bounty hunter that is trying to kill the other main character but can't for whatever reason and while fighting a common enemy gives up the bounty and lets them live? Or a scientist and a Jedi trying to make it across the galaxy to bring a component to a machine the Republic has built to stop some huge natural disaster that could wipe out entire systems? There's so much other stuff they could have done for TFA.

Reminder that the Knights of the Old Republic era is secretly canon but Hidalgo won't let it be official canon because he doesn't like how it represents the force. It's too late for them to say that it's canon, but they're making things with the mindset that it is until they start making Old Republic era media in the new canon. Just to be safe I would check out Tales of the Jedi, the KOTOR comic, KOTOR 1 and 2, TOR, and all TOR comics and books so you have an idea of what the canon Old Republic was like. So Battlefront is neat, but there is a pretty glaring problem that's going to make it get boring fast; Why the heck is each individual Game Mode a separate playlist!?

It's fine at launch, but in 3 months time when the playerbase thins out, there are going to be some very slow and empty Playlists unless they change this (and the Season Pass info is implying that they aren't going to change it, but rather add MORE playlists.)

That was in the EU. The Empire in new canon seems to be an equal opportunity opportunist, so anyone can join provided they're useful. There's still examples of alien-haters within the Empire, and they have no qualms about enslaving whole races or just performing straight-up genocide, but it's not a strictly "we only like humans everything else is scum!" situation.

The change was probably made because the EU had painted Palpatine as a human supremacist, which seemed weird when the prequels had him closely consorting with aliens and even had one as an apprentice. Various reasons. The core worlds are generally richer and seen as more civilized. Some members of the Empire correlate this with alien races. Twi'leks do spice all day on Ryloth? All Twi'leks are junkie scum! It's like if you assumed all black people are rapists and murderers because of crime rates in Somalia.

This is why outer rim worlds and a lot of the aliens there are discriminated by the Empire. But the civilized, humanoid ones in the core are much more likely to be accepted with open arms.

In Lost Stars its explained that for a long time, the Empire didn't even bother give the option of recruitment to some shithole worlds, even if the planet was full of humans. So it's not really a race thing at all for more of the Empire, but more a class thing (which I vastly prefer, its far more interesting and politically relevant than just saying "teh empire is bad because rayciss!!)"

A lot of the planets that were in the Confederacy were Outer-Rim, and once they were defeated and the Republic became an Empire the Outer-Rim was punished with it's past succession from democracy. I've thought about this a lot, and it's so hard to decide.

Part of me things I would enjoy the fuck out of being a pilot for the Empire, but only if I got to fly a Defender. Anything else is a flying coffin.

Another part of me wants to be a Bounty Hunter, but more like Ventress in Season 4 of TCW, where she has some kind of moral code.

If I was force sensative, I'd want to try and find a way to hone my skills, without dedicating my life to a cult. I actually like Rebels a lot, but I agree, McQuarrie is overrated to shit, and TCW looked way better as a CGI Star Wars cartoon. Using McQuarrie designs is a fine tribute (TCW Y-Wings for example) but dedicating the entire design of the show? Come on, they went too far, it doesn't help with the "cheaper" feel Rebels has at all.

There's a reason they dropped the "thin saber" design.

I love the Vader design though. I'm basically headcanoning that Vader looked like that about 5 years before ANH and he slowly upgraded the design to the one seen in the movies. The fact that the ANH helmet has a slight red tint seals the deal too.

I've tried like 3 times to get through Aftermath and I just can't do it. It reads like it was written in a weekend with no revisions.

Overall I have to say the new EU books have been largely disappointing. I was really hoping they'd kick off the new EU with some real quality books, but nothing has been particularly amazing.

Then again, maybe I'm just still butthurt about them ignoring so many great stories from the old EU, which admittedly was largely garbage as well.

To kick it off with good books (which they at least did but only as 1 book) they would have had to have more authors write them months in advance to Disney taking over. We also have to realize that at the start of the Zahn books and forward there weren't many books at all to fluff the total up with. Right now SW is just trying to find its foothold once more and can't really afford to go into multiparts besides Aftermath, which is all sorts of unfortunate.

All of the adult novels they've put out, though I still need to read Dark Disciple. A New Dawn and Lords of the Sith I thought were really good. Tarkin was pretty good when it wasn't focusing on the flashbacks to him growing up. Aftermath and Heir to the Jedi were just disappointing.

Also I read the Servants of the Empire YA books after hearing some good things about them, and was surprised to find they were actually really good. Might have to check out some of the other junior stuff.

Lost Stars is a YA book, but it's much better than most of the "adult" books by a long shot. You should definitely read that or Twilight Company ("adult" book but so much better than Battlefront wants to be) next.
