Watchmen,_issue_1.jpg

All this talk of Watchmen has got me thinking.

Watchmen hands down is my favourite comic book, and one of my favorite stories period.

Not for the edginess or anything but because Watchmen fundamnetanlly is a charactdr study, and an ensemble charcater study at that.

Its Superheroes but rather than focus of spectacle or even the murdur mystery that on paper is core to the plot, its all about delving into these people and seeing what drives them to do what they do and how it effects them.

Of course there are other elements of brillance. The Popul Vuh inspired graphic design structure gives the whole thing a wonderful theatric sense and the dialouge is really cripse, but I treasure the book so much because its based on something so rare in genre fiction, treating the characters as acrual chatacters and not hallow vehicles for spectacle.

Now when I say Watchmen is my favorite book I dont mean to put it on a pedestal, in fact I want to read something that surpassed it.

So does anyone have any recs for comics like Watchmen, books really built on exploring the characters as people and the world around them?

I also suppose we could also talk about character dynamics in general in comics and Watchmen overall.

New "Garfield" CG-Animated Movie is in the Works

News like this could make Garfield change his stance on Mondays.

Alcon Entertainment, the company behind the upcoming "Blade Runner" sequel, has secured the rights to develop an animated feature based on Jim Davis' long-running comic strip. Davis will serve as an executive producer.

Alcon's goal is to launch a CG-animated "Garfield" movie franchise.

Debuting in 1978, the comic strip centers on a cynical, lazy and gluttonous orange cat, and his interactions with his awkward owner Jon Arbuckle, dim-witted dog Odie and occasional other characters, like Nermal, "the world's cutest kitten," and Arlene, Garfield's romantic interest.

The strip has spawned a multimedia and merchandising empire, with animated television series and specials, video games, direct-to-video animated movies, and a pair of live-action/CGI hybrid features, 2004's "Garfield: The Movie" and its 2006 sequel "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties."

John Cohen ("Despicable Me," "The Angry Birds Movie") and Steven P. Wegner ("Racing Stripes," "The Book of Eli") will produce.

In an edited interview for Forbes, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson talked about the development plans for the DC SuperHero Girls line.

>Girls in our research groups wanted action stories with heroes, so we started with animated shorts on YouTube, an hour-long animated special on Cartoon Network and Boomerang, and a website of adventures available in various languages. Now come the dolls, action figures, and books, with animated shorts, direct-to-video and apps underway. Mattel will launch a 12-inch Katana action doll as a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive. It’s a big business opportunity.

Is it worth pointing out that DC are making comic books, with an upcoming graphic novel promoted on FCBD as well?

But these are DC SuperHero Girls that Diane Nelson wants to stand on their own two feet. Literally.

>Mattel’s perspective on what’s historically worked for girls made them a great collaborator. At the same time, there were points of constructive tension about everything from the form of the figures to their costumes. We wanted the dolls to stand on their own. There are many dolls that don’t, and require a stand to be upright. We wanted clothes that are fashionable, but not trendy.

>And as for the lack of pink in the palette of the DC Super Hero line, and making the first action figures for girls?

The success of the Wonder Woman toys….

>The official rollout is in July. We’ve tested the apparel, Wonder Woman’s role-playing shield and bracelets in Target stores since April. It’s selling like gangbusters, and we can’t keep it on the shelves. All of our retailers are excited about getting their hands on the products. We have 30 product categories out now, and will have 70 product categories in more than 35 markets globally after the rollout in July.

Exactly what DC – and this line – is worth to Warners. And they’re looking for more than a billion dollars.

>Our overall consumer products represent a $6 billion business. The DC brand brings in about half of that. We think the DC Super Hero Girls can be bigger than a $1 billion brand.

Yes, I’m thinking Austin Powers too. As for Diane’s own favourite character?

>Wonder Woman is my favorite character. It’s about her strength and compassion, which is how I like to think I operate in business and in life. She’s a bad-ass warrior who cares about people. She’s a pacifist at heart, but can be a warrior when she needs to be, which is how women need to be in business.

How can people even try to diss the Raimi Spidey movies?

Just saw Civil War and literally everything from the swinging motions to the poses to the webs sounds to the fighting style etc. has changed remarkably little in the 16 years and 5 movies since Riami's Spider-Man.

I get that no adaptation can please everybody but as far as visually adapting a super heroe's style to live action I can't name anyone that nailed it better on the first try.

>I get that no adaptation can please everybody but as far as visually adapting a super heroe's style to live action I can't name anyone that nailed it better on the first try.

Why Raimi is a fucking amazing director. He sharpened his teeth on the Evil Dead movies and brought his own unique style to the Spider-Man universe. That's what happens when you have directors who actually give a shit about telling the best story they can. Spider-Man 3 was the perfect example of a movie being ruined by executive meddling
>>
Raimi's Spider-Man got the movements and visual style of Spider-Man completely wrong, it's uber generic, he swings like Tarzan not a spider, he crawls like someone mountain climbing not a spider, he fights and throws punches like some drunken brawler, it's all wrong

It had too much action

Look, I get it, once upon a time super heroes were for "boys" and were action movies, that isn't the case anymore welcome to 2016, action is fine in small doses but we want more than that, action needs to be secondary and there needs to be more comedy and cute scenes
