Anybody know what the weird coping they're using on the miniramp for the Woodward miniramp game of skate is called? Never seen anything like it

I wonder if they just paid someone to sit there for hours with a circular saw and cut the pattern into it?!?! Or is it some specialized type of pipe you can buy? It doesn't seem to go the whole way around the pipe. No clue what the advantage of this is, though it does sort of make a cool sound, sort of

I am so fucking ready for the summer. Waking up, linking up with some of the guys at the park, skating some spots until the sun starts to go down, drinking some beer, causing some hell and having tons of fun.

I plan on making this one a good one because literally all my friends are moving out of town to go to college and i'm the only one left behind because I'm such a fuck up.
>>
Can I justifiably use a 8.375 or 8.5 board on 8" trucks?
>>
>>1242425

Yea definitely
>>
>>1242427
Is there anything I should look out for? Like will wheelbite fuck my life up, will stuff be harder? Easier?
>>
>>1242437

Well if you look closely you'll notice a lot of pro's setups have the trucks thinner than the deck, so its not that uncommon, at least for me I think it makes flicking flip tricks a bit easier. I don't think you'll wheelbite more, your wheels will be closer to the lowest point of the board but not by much at all
>>
>>1242460
I've actually never noticed a pro with setup like that, but I'll keep an eye out for some haha.

Makes me feel a lot better about the fact I won't have to replace my theeves that have been hardly used. Thanks man!

I want to add to the DV vs. iphone/DSLR discussion from last thread >>1242087 >>1242111

imo it's not just about retro nostalgia. DV simply looks better. it gets a bad rep as home video, but so did 16mm, which if you're not aware ended up becoming the arthouse standard. DV has a physical materiality that HD can't replicate even with lame ass post-processing that any layman can see right through, unless it's expert level.

like, look at any "b&w" movie shot on an HD camera vs. film, for any indie release. the difference is always obvious, even on feature films. the editing room can't jerry rig something on that level unless it's a professional studio using RED cameras with fincher level post-processing technique. anything less, it's going to look like shit.
music videos, indie films, they all look like fucking soap opera trash shot with these kiddies shooting on DSLR. just because it's convenient and accessible doesn't mean it's good

and just because DV is cheap doesn't mean it's bad. it just means it's not appreciated. pedro costra shot half his movies in DV. and they look amazing. david lynch shot lost highway in it, too. they look far better than the majority of low budget films to come out in the last decade despite using far cheaper cameras. you can get the cameras they used for sub-500 today, when they originally retailed for 5k+ intended for industrial use

yea, in the proper hands, you can make anything look good. but it takes a lot more work to make DSLR look even remotely acceptable when DV comes out of the bin looking fresh af. it might not be HD but what the fuck does that matter? they're edits, not BBC nature docs.

anyone shooting on anything besides phone on digital deserves to be shot. get with it or get out

mateys, proper skateboards are pieces of athletic equipment
Like they were certainly initially toys, but this thing is designed in a certain way to be very durable and for very specific purposes.

Like trampolines are fun and shit but they aren't toys.

A cheap walmart board with no concave is a toy, a deck designed to have you flying around bowls, down stairsets and vert ramps is sporting equipment/
>>
>>1242760
he isn't saying he has callous.
His job is stopping them from forming.
Soft bleeding thumbs aren't what do it for most girls.
>>
>>1242760
Because I skate 5-6 days a week and trying to grab your board and spin with a cut up thumb doesn't work, I lose any type of grip in my hand by the third day.
>>
>>1242774
commercial institutionalization is definitely not what defines a sport senpai. according to the olympics it's just those activities defined by physical dexterity or athleticism.

but it doesn't matter if skateboarding might qualify. it's not a sport and if it is, it's not skateboarding, it's "skateboarding".

skateboarding has always had its edge, it's always been defined by constant rebellion against attempts to codify and limit it. it's literally street surfing. it's boundless. fuck off with your shit
>>

just put band-aids on around your thumb. do it when I apply fresh grip

Best company to get blank decks from?
Preferably where you can get a deal on 3 or so decks.

I got a blind complete and it's razor tailing and chipping a fair amount already, don't feel like spending 50 euro on a new deck every month before I'm actually breaking them from good use and not repeating ollies 100 times an hour.

my flatmate has shitloads of ritalin and says I can basically ask for some whenever.
Do you reckon it would be decent for getting that intensity to just do a trick 500 times till you bolts it every time?
>>
>>1243385
just get candy with you, like a choclate donut or two and take breaks whenever you feel like it. If you have anxiety over people watching you, with ritalin the only thing you won't be doing is concentrating on skateboarding.
>>
>>1243385
oh and not to mention that you should ask yourself what will happen if you break your board or you don't make the trick at all.
>>
>>1242997

>>1243030

Totally new to this; just checked the pastebin, but it left me with a couple of questions.

I'm a little nervous about putting together a skateboard, are there any prebuilt boards that don't sacrifice quality? Also, is buying used boards a good idea?
>>
>>1243805
you can buy a prebuilt at your local shop. they typically are alright. i think most big board brands also have decent completes
>>
>>1242881
i want it to be a "sport" just cause it will get more people skating in poorfag countries. but if normies get into it in rich countries id be pissed. skaters are fucking weirdos and should stay that way
>>
>>1243815
sweet. I would feel better if I could buy a prebuilt and learn how to build one later by replacing shit as it messes up.

>>
>>1243825
what you said was very chauvinistic.
>>
>>1243828
there is nothing hard about building a board bar maybe gripping anyway
>>
>>1243805

When you go to a skateshop they'll actually build the board for you as you're picking out what parts you want. That's what most people do anyway most people don't walk out with a bunch of parts to build at home. The other cool thing is that you can ask for 'shop bolts' 'shop bearings' 'shop grip' and they will be free, but a generic brand, so you can save a bit of money that way. A lot of shops do this, maybe not every single one though.
>>

Honestly the major ones, like skateboardcity are just as slow as this shit is and full of 15 year olds.
Not to mention half the time you are reading posts from 2007.
and that pace is diffused over multiple forum sections so it honestly feels slower.

If you can bear it reddit has a section but there is only one thread for actual discussion and it's reddit

desu a huge amount of serious injuries like broken arms are because young kids try shit they aren't ready for.

But you are going to repeatedly injure yourself skateboarding, deal with it.
The body is quite a sturdy thing as long as you aren't an idiot about it.
If you don't want to be airing out of 10ft bowls or jumping down 15 stairs then calm down, you don't have to.
>>
>>1253289
midlife crisis isn't a medical term
It's just a joke at the expense of middle aged men who suddenly decide they need a Ferrari and an affair because they forgot to do any of the things they wanted to do in life.

Those wheels are quite big and seem pretty expensive. If I were you I'd swap them out for some 53mm minilogos.
Other than that it all looks good.

There are no minilogo wheels in this online shop and also not in my local store.

Dont worry about age. Just skate

Apologies if someone has asked this before and I've missed it, but I'm curious about much weight a board can realistically hold; I'm 6'5 and weigh about 300 lb currently (although that's down from about 315 about a month ago before I started going to the gym).
Am I too heavy to be able to use a board properly right now? I don't wanna buy something only to break it.
Like I said I'm hitting the gym and my current goal for this year is around 220. Should I just wait until I'm at that weight?

Get an 8" Blank deck and stickers they are your budget friends. Buy some bones reds bearings and 80-99 durometer wheels depending on how shitty the surface you will be skating on is. Get independent 139s. You can break decks and wear down wheels. But your truck's will last forever and your bearings can be cleaned and re-used :)

So i got a trick not long ago today, took me 4 tries

https://youtu.be/FVOKfYVAfdM
>>
>>1242460
Not true

I specifically only skate 8" boards with 139's(Indy's for 8"?) and i once got a gimmick chocolate board(with the "spring loaded" kevlar plies in the middle)

Not only did the Kevlar plies were obsolete(i already have a great natural pop so i didn't notice jack shit) but the board wasn't even 8 inches

It was written underneath the griptape that it was 8 x 31.65 and on the price tag it said it was an 8"

I have great consistency and i always landed 1 trick on 3 consecutive tries even if it was flat, rail tricks or anything else

I would always land on my board and get force stopped by a wheel bite and it really pissed me off

Came home on 1st or 2nd session(it was 3 years ago) to grab a measuring tape and it marked 8 inches and 1/4

Then it all made sense, sold the board half price i bought it and bought one which was 8inches wide

Never had problems with wheel bites since then

Ah okay. So it's more about the regular trick than the case at hand? For example, if you're riding fakie and you do a regular pop shuvit, then it's called a fakie bs shuvit instead of a fakie fs shuvit, even though the board rotates fs?

Fakie front shuv - board rotates clockwise

Fakie back shuv (but you would just say, fakie shuv) - board rotates counterclockwise
>>
>>1264127
Yes
>>
>>1264127
it's kind of stupid. a switch backside 180 will be frontside of it's done nollie, while a regular backside 180 is still backside even if it's fakie. anyway, who cares

Thanks guys, I guess you pick up on this stuff the longer you skate. Been at it for 5 months and have been loving it

Leo does 100 kickflips in his Emerica Laced pro model.
https://youtu.be/Eem6suwqcoM

I have skated the Laced shoe before, it was great but it was a but tight for my wide feet. Now I skate the Figgy's.
>>
>>1264159
Wish I could skate handrails like Leo.
>>
when do you guys change your wheels?
>>
>>1264345

I buy 56s and then change the bearings multiple times. I'll ride them down till theyre 48mm or lower and even then I'll keep them because they're great for powersliding like that. Some people say wheels feel "dead" after awhile but I don't get that, don't know what that means. Usually fresh bearings are all you need. If you rotate them every few months so they don't wear down too much on one side you should be good. Having extra sets of wheels you can put on depending on terrain helps you get the most out of each set though

That said I have had a set of bones STF that like, chipped deeply, maybe 2mm or more deep chip - had to throw those away because the noise the chipped wheel made was obnoxious and I couldn't powerslide it away like you usually can with a flatspot

>>1264159

I've had a few pairs of these, they're a nice basic shoe
>>
>>1263877
Ride around, do some ollies. If you feel comftorable do some tricks.
>>
>>1254684
If you know how to fall on your back (keep chin tucked forward so head doesnt whip into ground) you will be pretty safe, some people dont do this automatically though, and its impossible to think fast enough to do it manually in most cases. Put a mattress on a floor or something and just fall on your back and make sure you develope that instict of tucking chin when falling. Sounds stupid but if you dont want to wear a helmet its pretty mandatory to avoid head injury as much as possible.

me jelly. Gonna get there like you I feel.
>>
>>1263950
fuck, the rail may be small, but did you ollie up to the top bar? That's gnarly.
>>
>>1264127
>>1264144
It's because you are doing the same motions, only the board rolls backwards. There's no fakie in surfing (I guess).
>>
>>1264159
Ah, so I see he puts his foot up front. I tried to do ollie to nose mannies one day because one of my friends had them so down, so I kept my foot up front and it would spin. I see just because he wants to do some flatground kickflips he also keeps his foot there.
Note taken.

I skated a little bit when I was younger, just in my parents driveway. I'm 22 now and I wanted to get back into it cause I want to have some skill at something. Anyway turns out I fucking suck god damn I just went and TRIED to skateboard for about an hour, can barely fucking ride the thing. Fell several times and ended up ripping my pants and giving myself a huge ass bruise and abrasion.
I mean I don't even know what to say, I just fucking suck horribly, goddamn.

It doesn't help that where I am I can't skate anywhere without a fuck ton of people walking around. I mean I found this little back road thats kind of out of the way but people still walk through and they all stare at me and I get really self conscious about it.
Also I bought a creature board and the trucks are so fucking loose.

Yeah though I fucking suck guys.
>>
>>1264870
Literally the exact same situation as you, 22 and I could barely push as a child but i tried to ollie and drop in till i'd eaten shit too much and took up smoking weed instead.

I feel its good to try and get good as something that challenged you in earlier life.
And we all suck, I still suck, but i can recognize i am noticeably more comfortable on the board every session.

Watch some braille videos and try and practice smart as well as often, try and figure out what your body is doing wrong from reading other peoples tutorials and questions online.

And for the needing a place to go, the back end of large carparks are good, no one wants to park at the back incase someone breaks into their car.
I've mainly been practicing in car parks, it;s solitary and I've never had someone come close enough to really care.
>>
>>1264870
do you think people just jump on a board and fly?
>>
>>1264888
Thanks man, all I really needed was someone to give me some motivation, and to lick my wounds.

On another note this is pretty risky for me cause if I seriously injure myself and have to skip work I'm literally fucked.
>>
>>1264889
Nah man, honestly I was just a bit butthurt and wanted some people to kick my ass about it. I'm an awkward as fuck guy too so I don't have any friends.
>>
>>1264895
No worries man.
By the time you almost have ollies down you will have come too far to even consider quitting, at least for a while.
>>
Board keeps slipping out from under me shooting forward when i try to pop shove it.

what that mean?

>I skated a little bit when I was younger, just in my parents driveway. I'm 22 now and I wanted to get back into it cause I want to have some skill at something.

Same but I'm 23. Can still do the basics like pushing around, but haven't even gotten close to learning to ollie.

>Anyway turns out I fucking suck god damn I just went and TRIED to skateboard for about an hour, can barely fucking ride the thing. Fell several times and ended up ripping my pants and giving myself a huge ass bruise and abrasion.

Chill out. Just cruise around. It's awesome that you went out and skated at all man. Don't push yourself so hard that you're gonna get hurt. Learn how to push, watch the Braille tutorials. Kyro is a dork but he knows his shit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30xcphpiBM8

>they all stare at me and I get really self conscious about it.

Honestly, people don't give a fuck. Everyone is way too busy doing their own thing to care about a dude on a board with wheels.

>Also I bought a creature board and the trucks are so fucking loose.

Tighten em! But loose trucks will make turning easier. Grab a cheap skate tool online or just find a wrench around the house. Have fun and chill out bro.
>>
>>1264965
Means you're not shoving correctly. You're probably using both your feet to get the board to rotate. This is wrong and cause the board to fly away.
When you shuv correctly you should lift your front foot off of the board and kick backwards with your back foot. You want the wheels to slide along the ground as the board spins. Once the board has rotated 180 degrees you put your front foot down and step it onto the board. Now do the same with your back foot.

24 year old restarter here.

I'm beginning to try heelflips right now, something I never managed as a kid. (is it really smarter than doing kickflips first?). I can flip the board fine and often enough land with my back foot on, the front foot is a bitch though. When that happens I manage to stay over the board, except my front foot seems to just take too long to get back on. The closest I get is when I flick really fucking violently. Is that how you're meant to do it?

Also the board sometimes lands behind me. What causes that?

Scoop with your back foot
>>
>>1265130
God. I remember this phase. It sucked ass so bad. I think the real secret is to try and stay as centered as possible. You will want to flick your foot straight out, but resist that urge because thats why it ends up behind you. That same subtle roll off the top of the board you do for a kickflip is what you want, but this time go the otherway.

Jesus christ that happened to me day before yesterday.

Was skating a deep bowl and went too hard and slipped out. Ran backwards and slammed the back of my head on the concrete and about knocked myself out. Ive been skating on and off for over 10 years and thats the first head injury ive recieved. Never even came close before. Im never skating bowl without a helmet again.
