it was a joke, a tease. Because Phelps looks like he's been dropped to his head when he was an infant, he looks like a cartoonish version of someone who ate a massive spill ahahahaha.
Jokes aside, he once wrote something on Thrasher a long time ago, I don't remember if it was on the mail drop or whatever, where he said something nice about him wearing big glasses, that they at least allow him to see what's beautiful.

back in the day nocomplys were considered 'not an actual trick' same with bonelesses and smith/feeble grinds. That mentality has carried on. Plus nowadays there are annoying hipsters who only do nocomply crap.

Varial flips is just because if you can varialflip you should just do a 3flip instead.

I once knew this guy who could barely do any tricks but could do varial flips every time, and could even do varial double flips and triple flips regularly too. He had them on lock for some reason so weird

Complete beginner here. Been pushing around and getting the feel for it, I watched brailes video on pushing and the way he pushes is a lot different from how I do ti. He seems to put his whole foot on the ground as if he is just walking, I can only manage to get the front of my shoe on the ground when I push though. I can get my whole shoe on the ground when I push but it feels sketchy and doing it too much makes my ankle hurt.

Am I doing it wrong?

On a side note I've got scrapes and bruises all over my arms and knees from falling and it feels great.
Also love that feeling of timelessness while skating, a good 20 minutes will go by and I won't even notice. Then I stop for a minute to smoke and it feels like I'm still moving.

Those guys don't fear anything, they always 100% commit for every trick.
Like Cardiel, do or die.
>>
>>1267537
The real reason they get a bad rep, is because like pop shuvs, or in this case really shuvs. Kids learn them before they really learn to pop and bullshit them around into a varial instead of learning to kickflip. Which is all good and well, you don't have to kickflip.

But the problem is, they usually don't learn to pop them, or barely learn to pop them. Let alone catch them and somewhere along the line they got associated strongly with this beginner way of doing them. But no pros ever really came along to legitimatize them in the average skaters eyes.
I mean with shuvs its common to see kids do the shitty beginner versions of them, but its also common enough to see good skaters pop a nice clean one. You rarely get that with varials and when you do its not a trick they do often, its usually seen as a bit of a novelty cause of this. Kinda like an early grab, in the sense even when they do one. Its a "look I can make this dumb trick look good" type thing.

Ι actually have made a list of pros who 've done varial flips in their video parts. If you want I can post it.

Shuv-its are not the same as varial flips: they were THE go-to trick for everyone from '89 to '92.

I can't varial flip.
>>
>>1268506

go to skatevideosite.com to look up the names of them or search by company, that site is very complete, then just look on YouTube , almost everything is there
>>
>>1268936

There were threads complaining about it in Q&A maybe something will be done. I feel worse for the smaller sports who could have a nice home here, there are enough skaters to keep our threads from getting slid & pruned but almost no other activities have enough posters to survive, other than airsoft. So its basically just, WWE, airsoft, and skating.
>>
>>1269180

What other sports were on here before? I remember there being some I just can't remember what because I didn't come here enough

BMXing? Stuff like that?

What's a normal beginner trick order after you get down ollies?

I know hand tricks are lame but they look like a lot of fun. is there a guide with a list of them? Ie boneless variations, beanplants etc
>>
>>1269586
i actually think hand tricks are cool, just don't be a hipster douche about it, and it's all good.
>>
>>1269586
Grab tricks look great on tranny, especially at high speed. Grant Taylor being a good example.

Anyway after you learn how to ollie, 180's are really easy to get down.
>>
>>1269586

If you're interested in bonelesses just start doing them they're not hard at all. Just try doing the motion while stopped of flat ground. Then try actually snapping the board up into your hand rather than just stepping off and lifting. Work on being able to snap it into your hand grabbing either side, or the nose. Once you are good at stepping off and snapping it into your hand try it on a small bank. You could learn them quickly
>>
Bumping to keep the thread from being slid by wrasslefaggots
>>
While I was out earlier I noticed I popped my ollies easier and landed them cleaner when popping the nose rather than the tail. Maybe it's a placebo effect and I was in the zone for a couple minutes. Idk

>I used to come on /asp/ before mandrama came here and it was all skateboarding, BMXing, stuff like that
It was never like that you lying cunt. From day one there has been wrestling threads and from day one there has been arguments about if wrestling really classifies as an "alternative sport", until eventually they changed the board name to " alternative Sports & Wrestling" to try end such arguments.

>Now I come here and there is literally ONE skateboarding thread ON THE ENTIRE CATALOGUE
The skate posters choice to narrow it down to one thread cause they weren't generating enough content to warrant multiple.

>>1269073
>Ι actually have made a list of pros who 've done varial flips in their video parts. If you want I can post it.
I'm curious to see this. But that's not really my point if they've done it once or a couple times, nobodies ever came along and consistently did them well, until they caught on as a cool trick to do.

>Shuv-its are not the same as varial flips: they were THE go-to trick for everyone from '89 to '92.

noob here. what does it mean to skate fakie? i know switch means to switch stance, and fakie tricks means doing them backwards somehow, but how would you ride fakie? do you ride backwards? wouldn't that be switch because i would need to face the "backwards" direction to actually ride like that?
>>
>>1269843
>Ie as in i.e. not le lmao
you dont start a new sentence with i.e. (so no capitalisation required typically), and in your post you were supposed to use "e.g.", not "i.e."
>>
>>1270862
is this really what you want to argue about in this thread
>>
>>1270857
Riding fakie is basically standing in switch stance, but just having your front foot on your nose. You can't "ride" fakie, you ride switch and just move your front foot on the nose to do fakie tricks. Surprisingly hard to explain, hope you understood. Nollie is the same, just done in regular stance.

The "bee urself" meme is somewhat true, only it's been misinterpreted over the years.

There are some people you will get along great with while there are others you won't at all. Everyone is affected by this principle and it's due to their personality. The "bee urself" part means to accept it and not change just to get along with people you don't like.

For skateboarding I would assess (not judge) people on attitude and aptitude.

Ignoring aptitude what is your attitude towards skateboarding? Do you "work hard" at it and practice regiments every day or do you prefer chill sessions to try whatever? Do you accept all skill levels and encourage others to try new things and improve or do you judge others and have a "too cool for school, too good for you" aura about you? How far would you travel to skate with a friend? What about if that friend wanted to skate every day? What other hobbies do you have and would you be willing or able to participate in those hobbies with your skater friends if they wanted to join?

If you've answered those think about what you would like to see in attitude from skateboarding friends and what you wouldn't like to see in skateboarding friends.

In terms of aptitude I would recommend a relationship where you can both help eachother otherwise it could get awkward. Skateboarding is very inclusive because of this as there's a lot of new shit to learn even if you're a professional.

If you're new to skateboarding I'm sure someone there is friendly and helpful enough to help you learn the basics. If everyone at the park is a judgemental and unhelpful person like you seem to think then who cares about them or what they think about you? Everyone started somehere.

If you're having trouble with ollies form is important so I would just open conversation with the regulars there asking if they could check your form.
>>
>>1271375
I should probably add that there's a lot of things under attitude that are just preferences and can be worked around or compromised. It's always up to you to decide what you can deal with.

I 'm just trying to differentiate it from the varial flip. If I understand correctly, you claim that's it's done as a novelty, while I claim that shuv-its are the equivalent of a walk-the-dog, but in street skating. (Pop) shuv-its were and are seen much more often.
While your impression of the varial flip might hold some truth to it (i.e. done for the irony of it/to show that one can make the trick look good etc.), it's a legit trick to put in a line. Aesthetics are subjective, have you asked every skater you know if they like the dolphin flip? Just because a company shill promotes it, doesn't mean that it actually moves people to skate.

Here goes the list of people who have varial flipped in their video parts. Note that this is the standard version of the varial, not the vert trick nor any other flatground variation, such as fakie, nollie and the heels thereof

it means being able to do tricks fakie.
your tricks are done the same way, meaning your backfoot remains your backfoot, unlike switch.
That's why fakie retains the same orientation naming-frontside and backside.

you have to build up the muscles in your ankle that let you give a good 'flick' so unless you start working on kickflips and just sucking at them, they're not going to get easier

Heelflips don't require much of a flick, more just sliding your foot differently and starting it with toes hanging a bit off so they're easier

I want to buy a longboard, I had one that I bought for 20€ few years ago but now its dead, cracks in the wood etc.

I haven't used it for at least a year so I'm kinda out of touch with this.
What should I know about the shapes of the longboards? Does it really matter and just a taste thing?

Mostly interested in this

Night riding is the fucking best. I cruised for like 2 hours last night after redoing the bearings (and downing a rum and coke or two) and it was the most chilled-out thing I had done in a very long time. Someone wanna give some advice for a new guy? Blogpost incoming:

So I bought a complete shop board off kijiji, barely used, pretty good board as it was. Bearings worked decent, but they were a little slow though (no-name Walmart bearings, the guy said), so I bring it in to the shop that originally put it together and grab some Bones Reds to replace them.

Shop puts them on, I go about my day on-foot because I'm with people. I ride home (about 5km, dry roadways), and realize about 3km in, two wheels (left front/back right) are hardly moving compared to the other two. I get it home, pop the wheels off, and discover I have 3 completely fucked bearings, straight from the shop. As in, they hardly move. Two actually didn't move at all, even after being cleaned and lubed (3-in-1). Third one now moves, but is louder then the other two wheels combined. All three move for 15 seconds, the wheel that I moved the fucked bearings to only move for 2 seconds. One of them rattles ominously, and the other's outer-bearing shield seems to be bent inwards to the point of touching the bearings themselves.

I am a massive poorfag, literally 4 dollars to my name, is this something I need to drag my ass back the two hours to the shop for, or is there some kind of method I could do to fix these things without fucking them up worse?
>>
Complete noob question:

I built my first board and went out in the street to skate. I skated around my neighborhood for about 10 minutes, trying to get a feel of it. All of a sudden, my wheel comes rolling off.

I'm pretty sure I know what happened, I don't think the nut was on well enough. However, if it tightened it anymore, the wheel would be super stiff. Did I do something wrong? I got somewhat wide wheels on accident, so are maybe the bearings not in enough? I'm not sure why this happened right away

Whats a good width of a board? I have tried a longboard but its so wide that when I wanted to push for more speed and turn att the same time I had to move my foot to the other side of the board witch makes it a bitch to get back to just going straight ahead if I'm still gaining speed.

The deck was about 24cm wide.

I want to be able to turn by just shifting my weight. Getting my first skatrboard soon.
>>
>>1274963
8, 8.25, and 8.5 are the most popular sizes right now. 8.25 would probably be good for you. grats on quitting longboarding
>>
>>1274927

ugh everything. literally everything from his clickbait video concepts, to the fact he's a scieno, to the fact he kind of fucking sucks at skating, to the fact he only skates skateparks ... idk I'm biased, ive been skating my whole life and grew up watching actual videos so I'm probably an elitist, maybe newbies like him. I really hate him though, and the "we want revenge" guy.

Jeffwonsong is the only youtube skater I enjoy, also the "Majer" youtube crew is pretty great... Their skill level is off the charts
>>
>>1274867

Yea maybe the bearings aren't in all the way that can certainly happen they should be like .5cm in from the outer lip of the wheel. Maybe look at pics online to get an idea of how deep they should sit. Just press down as hard as you can on the wheel to set them better also maybe if you have cheap trucks the threading for the nut is just bad?

>>1274853

You really can't fix bearings to be honest, that's some bullshit though that sucks that happened, I mean I would go back and tell them about it because Reds shouldn't do that. There are a lot of bootleg Reds and since you're outside America, idk, maybe they gave you bad ones?? Really sucks but no you probably can't fix them, one thing is though, you can't judge bearings on how they spin freely like by your finger, only on how they ride, but sounds like the ones you got ride poorly. Also I wouldn't mention to the shop you cleaned them with anything
>>
>>1274968
Well I do like the longboard otherwise but a bitch to turn with, I don't own one myself just played around with my friends board.

How well does a skatrboard roll? As in just cruise. Is it going to be more sluggish or lighter to just get around with?
>>
>>1274982

>>
>>1274963
Like the other anon said, 8.0 and 8.25 are good widths. I personally prefer a 7.75
>>1274982
In terms of smoothness, you won't get the same experience as a longboard, but with good wheels and bearings, cruising is still doable. Definitely a lot more convenient to carry around
>>
>>1274972
Bones Red guy here, balls. Thanks for the advice though, only gonna be able to get down to the shop in a week or two (public transit is 10$ each way, and I don't even have that, gotta love government programs!). I did some googling, and people said they had the same problem (one guy said something like 1 in 16) with the wheel shield being cockeyed out the box and fucking the whole thing. Some other people said it might have been the shop (as they did it on the spot when I bought them), but this is a very well established shop in the area, and I'd be surprised as hell if they messed something as simple as this up. I might just try to pull the inner shield off and see if that helps anything with the first one, the second one I got no idea, but at least it will help it roll. Either that, or I'll just put the board back to what it was, it might just have to roll slow for a bit until I get some money. Least I can get the low-speed stuff down during that time.

I don''t know man. I think the main issue is that people don't like the idea of old white dudes in suits having so much say in the world of skateboarding. It doesn't belong to them and yet they still think they can buy. The worst thing is that, at leas amongst the younger skaters, nike has managed to buy skateboarding.

I'm just starting at 31 years old (although I was able to cruise around a bit back in my early teens on a friend's board), but I can give my advice.

I built my own first board and my deck is 8.25. I went with Bones STF 54s. But I'm not doing tricks yet and just cruising, getting a feel. And my neighborhood roads are pretty rough, so I ordered a set of Spitfire 80HDs in 56. World of difference.

I kept the Bones to switch out when I need though. And I'm glad they're there when I'm ready for them.

They've done some good things for skateboarding, no doubt, no doubt. They took over a park near me and made it pretty fucking sick. And then there's the buying of famous spots to keep them alive like the LA courthouse ledges. But I don't know if this outweighs the negative aspects of the company. They just seem so, so profit orientated making average to low quality products using an underpaid and mistreated workforce and then upsetting them as some of the most expensive products in the skate industry. This is enough for me to not give them money, let alone the whole "not skater owned" stuff.

>>
>>1280529
Thanks bro. My favourite wheels are the Hookups Jet Pilots on my Black Flag Elephant deck, they're 46mm new and pretty much perfecto for my riding. Big decks and little wheels let's me run super loose trucks without risers
>>
>>1280521
>average to low quality products

that's not the case

the case is, if they build a monopoly (which they are on the way to achieve), they will controll all of the industry, including magazines and boards. Soon everything will have a Nike tie-in, AT BEST; you buy these bearings, the shop has to give you some Nike cleaner or something, you buy boards from this distribution, oops, Nike is now a partner, you have to ride these trucks, etc etc etc.

I think if you got into skating within the past 5 years, it probably seems retarded because they are the biggest influence, have the raddest team, build the most parks etc.

But the thing is that all of those things used to be done by skater owned, independent companies. Nike's mere presence, and the fact they're vertically integrated (own their own factories, while Sole Tech and even Vans just lease time) means they were able to sell shit for cheaper and make more profit, and squeeze the "core" companies out without even directly competing with them.

So people who have been around longer, and have seen the effect that they have had, and the way the "core" companies are weaker today than anyone ever thought they could be, hate Nike, and most of us never even wanted them around in the first place.

They will eventually produce hardgoods. They will eventually require their riders to wear a uniform. They will turn skating into a Olympic sport. And they will eventually try to make their uniform/hard goods standard. I say this with certainty because this is what they do in all sports they get involved in.... Tennis, golf, soccer.... Its just the way they operate.

I got into street skating a while back and now I'd like to build a mini cruiser. I ripped some 5 inch (hanger) trucks off a shitty Airwalk board from the trash, and I'm going to get new bushings for it since the ones on them suck. Since I have no experience buying bushings as I'm just fine with the ones that Thunder put on the trucks for my street board, what kind of bushings as far as hardness should I use for a mini cruiser? If it makes any difference, I weigh about 285. I'll probably put a 1/4 or 3/8 inch rise on it so I can get 65 or 70mm wheels. I don't know if that makes a difference for what I should do, either.

If it's all just personal preference, what bushings does Thunder use?

Well at your weight, no offense, but you might want to stay away from softer bushing because I'm like half your weight and even for me I wear them down quickly. That being said look at Shorty's dohdoh or the Indy replacements, there are a variety of hardnesses. Also bones does replacement ones as well ('bones hardcore bushings') but they are designed with a integrated washer that I also blow out pretty quick so again maybe it won't be too durable for you. Idk. With those risers you will be fine with any wheels. For a 5" truck look at krooked zip zingers for a quality deck. I had a toy machine board that was a similar shape so other companies make that sort of shape too.

To answer your question question though, thunder uses 'thunder bushings' they're slightly different and that's why they sell the replacements separately, but as far as I know there aren't hardness options

None taken.

I have one set of Doh-Dohs that came in a spare parts kit so I'll probably just buy another set and use those. Thanks.

I bought this Arizona cruiser deck since I'm not going to be riding this one too much or particularly aggressively. I figured it'll last a few months at least as long as I don't do something stupid. It's also 7.8 so it shouldn't look too goofy with 5 inch trucks.

I actually saw some different color and hardness options when I was looking for Thunder replacement bushings but I'll just grab another set of doh-dohs.

I have a sort of newbie question.

I went in my local skate shop and they have a pair of trucks they recommended me for about $50-60 (AUD). I told the guy I would be back in a couple of days to buy all the parts I needed for my first board but I woke up this morning wondering, if I buy those trucks for $60, do I get another one, so saying when I purchase them, do they come in a pair or do I have to buy 2 trucks for $120?

I'm guessing that some places would have where you only buy one but I'm just wondering about most shops and purchases.

I'm a bit scared to go back in there and ask.
>>
>>1269396
Front shoves are a deck killer forsure. I can remember all of the times I snapped a deck coming off a ledge to front shuv. Gotta make sure you get those bolts bro.
>>

That should be the price for the pair, but I've heard trucks are way more expensive outside the US, so maybe someone from Australia can confirm

Embrace that shit man. You are performing crazy shit in a public space. Either go into your world, wear some headphones, and skate like you dont give a fuck or join in on the flow with the rest of the park and watch some people do some crazy shit you can't do. Give props when you see someone land something. Try to just be the person you would want to skate with. If you really love skating you wont give a shit about other heads.

They are the Wal-Mart of skateboarding. Lots of money/presence, shitty business practices, and they will absolutely move into your "city", push small companies out of business, and then when profits dwindle, leave a wake of hollow empty nothingness in it's place (see nike snowboarding).

They are an aggressive capitalist cancer that is going to eventually leave a subculture hanging in the wind without giving the slightest fuck. No goodbye ads like Fallen which had the decency to do.

I don't think it's a secret. Staba and Scuba Steve are heavily involved in Nike's business side. And so was BA for a brief time before 3D's demise.

>>1281462
adidas (lowercase) also collaborated with Alltimers and Nike did it with Quartersnacks, which both companies have way less influence than Welcome. I feel the situation could've been less of a corporate money grab and more of a supportive promo (like Quartersnacks and Alltimers) for the brand but since we're hearing shit about Jason the changes to the brand (which I think is "legitimize" the brand to the average skater), I'm going to assume it was a money grab.

The birth of Heroin was based on the fact FOS, the guy who created it, was straight edge. And he often didn't give a shit what people thought.
Vox is more on the hesher side of skating and promotes DIY skating to the fullest. The reason it might die is because there has been a lot of riders (Strubing and Hoffart) leaving the brand and internal conflict.

He backed the xgames too, not the best example but a good skater. Also he has to say that Nike changing the industry is ok since he runs bakerboys and having more people out there to buy his product is a good thing, but is it a good thing for the skaters, not the owners? Its not possible to have a brand and not sponsor Nike skaters anymore anyway since their team is like literally everyone
