Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size (include dimensions, not just volume)
-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

What kind of clownfish is this? Just a common one?

My wife got it at an Ace Hardware and I want to know what kind of anemone to get for it. Does anyone know?
>>
>>2432547
kek
>>
>>2432547
that's a tank-bred Amphiprion ocellaris, or false percula clownfish. AKA ocellaris clownfish. Yes, it is a common one.

It does not need an anemone and any anemone you buy for it will die in less than a month. If you insist on getting an anemone to kill, you need one of the expensive ones. Bubble-tips are common clownfish hosts. Avoid the cheap ones (Condy's or Condylactis anemones) they kill and eat clownfish.

Any of you guys have biotope aquariums? Which biomes are your favorite to keep?

this is the equivalent of what you posted with that clown fish.

Why are those /aq/ theards such cringe... But here are my last 2 projects. The bigger one was supposed to be some Kind of asia Biotop but Kind of fucked it with adding Ottos White clouds and Red Fire shrimps. Sadly the Shrimps cant bring up there young in that Tank so i have a seppered breeding Tank Not in the pic. The smaller one i wanted to add rasbora but now I feel it's was too small for that so it's my snail breeding Unit for now. I feed them to a big Kongo catfish i have.

common clownfish parasites are ich and velvet. Both can present as brown spots. The difference between the two is size and often color. Velvet is small like golden dust. Ich is larger usually like salt grains.

Took advantage of the petco sales lately, but they don't mark a lot of their plants, did I get Bacopa or Ludwigia? Also pictured: a pygmy chain sword that was in the store's plant tank for so long that I ended up getting like two feet worth of runners with it. I also got a freebie anacharis clipping that slipped into my bag somehow, despite not even wanting anacharis I planted it in the tank.

>>2433373
Real plants can help reduce algae growth and will do some of the work in filtering certain things from the water. You will probably need to at the very least use fertilizer, if not liquid Co2 as well if you want to speed up growth. You can do low-no plant maintenance too but won't get as much growth.

In a ten gallon most people recommend either doing a betta, pea puffer, or a small community tank using small species of rasbora, danio, tetra, or guppies/endlers. You can also do shrimp.

You will need a heater, which will be like 10 or 15 dollars, if you need to cover the tank for any reason you will need to furnish some sort of hood. If you want to do live plants the hood gets more complicated.
>>
>>2433285
Yeah, they're salt grain sized. I'd only ever seen white Ich before, so it threw me off. Thanks for the info.
>>
>>2433434
At most how many fishes can I have if I go with endlers? Thinking some shrimp and endlers would be neat.
>>
>>2433466
I could be wrong, I can't be sure without a sample and a microscope. But ich can present in different colors similar to the skin color. And it's very common. So that would be my first guess without examining the thing.

Probably live aquaria. If it is plants or inverts, aquatic arts is pretty good.
>>
>>2433477
Get an anubias barteri, some Java fern, and maybe a couple anubias Nana. They are all very easy beginner plants that you can just throw into the tank. They won't grow very fast, but they won't die either. You could also get a Moss ball shrimp love the things, but they are kind of like living sponge filters. You have to take them out every now and again and squeeze them in a bucket of tank water, but otherwise they are very easy to deal with.

As for substrate, you can use whatever you want with those plants. I would recommend sand, but fine gravel or even normal gravel is fine.

As far as fish and chips, the endless with shrimp idea would work very well! Get 1 male with 2 female endlers and maybe 8-10 dwarf shrimp. You could also put a Betta in there to be a nice centerpiece fish.

I have bought some stuff from aquatic arts and they have a big selection of dwarf shrimp in all kinds of colors. They have always been very healthy save for 1 dwarf crayfish that died during its first molt.

so im looking into using distilled water instead of my tap water, would i still need to use conditioner, or would i have to add anything at all to the water or could i just dump it in there and call it a day?
>>
>>2433606
distilled water doesn't need a conditioner.

it DOES need a buffer though. Which over time costs more than buying an RO/DI unit. But if you're using distilled for water changes or to fill a tank it has to be buffered. Without a buffer it will kill your livestock over time.

you can add it to the tank to top off evaporation without doing anything to it though.

Opinions on HOB overflows? Past few weeks my DIY PVC overflow on my 65g has been acting up and getting louder. I've had to increase the flow on my output because it lost siphon last week after a water change. Previously I've been doing some ass backwards ways of keeping my outflow as minimum as possible, like shoving, "things" up the outflow pipe to block flow. I wanted it to be quieter, but after it lost siphon I'm to scared to keep it tuned down. I've heard (read online) that HOB overflows are more prone to failing? They seem pretty simple so I'm not sure how exactly. My PVC overflow is pretty bulky and not pretty to look at either. I figure the HOB will be a lot more simple and nicer to look at. Hopefully a lot less quiet too.

Also r8 my 3g planted tank I just set up over the weekend. First attempt with plants. CO2 stuff arrives tomorrow in mail. Going to add dwarf baby tears.
>>
>>2433615
oh ok thanks. what does the buffer do exactly? the reason why i want to use distilled water is because it might end up being more expensive than just using my tap water, but i dont have the funds to buy a RO/DI unit outright.
so i can add distilled water to my aquarium right now to top it off and it wont really do anything?
>>
>>2433633
>oh ok thanks. what does the buffer do exactly?
it prevents pH swings and adds essential minerals to the water. Without those minerals your water will actually leach the minerals out of the plants and animals in the tank. Slowly dissolving them.
> i can add distilled water to my aquarium right now to top it off and it wont really do anything?
yes it's fine for topping evaporated water.
>I don't have the funds
credit is a very useful thing too. I think I bought mine on PayPal Credit.
>>2433628
I have an HOB overflow. It's loud but it's never failed me or lost siphon. They're designed to keep siphon even when the pump is shut off or the water level in the tank drops way low. I've been running mine for 6 years straight without any problems.

I keep mine quiet by covering it with a CD case and some filter floss. I've tried a lot of different overflows, they're all loud.
>>

>>
>>2433643
What kind of loud is it? Is the siphon loud or the water running down the tubes loud? I can handle the water noise but that sucking/gurgling/bubble noise is just not fun at all. HOB overflows don't function like my DIY PVC overflow so I'm guessing it's just the water rushing down the tubes.

no, just read the label or ask the clerk for one that's good for RO or distilled water and works for your fish.

Here's a shot of my overflow box. I have a CD case covering the box, then a bag of floss, and a chunk of concrete holding it down. I have a filter sock in the sump to quiet that end down and stop water splashing around.

I tried slowing the flow to quiet things down also. It usually caused problems.

Yeah that is what has caused me problems in the long rung it seems. Probably the low flow over the past half year has allowed lots of gunk to build up in my pipes. I could probably take it off and run a hose through it and clean it out but I'd rather just replace it honestly.

Copied the King of DIY PVC overflow. Looks identical to this. Works pretty well, can definitely handle a lot of flow. Just afraid of it losing siphon again. To be fair I don't have the airline tube going down that supposedly makes it failproof. Didn't have a drill to drill the hole.
>>
>>2433674
Yeah a HOB will be a lot easier for you because the water level at the siphon inlet never drops. It can go up but it can't go down. Well, it COULD go down if you shut off the pump for a week and the water evaporated out of the box. But other than that they're pretty hard to stop.

>>
>>2433373
You need some kind of lid. A simple piece of cut glass is fine if you just want to keep fish from jumping out of the tank, but you'll need some kind of supplemental lighting if you want live plants. Read the links in OP about cycling. They describe different ways to do it, you can make the decision on how you want to do it. AqAdvisor is a useful tool, but don't take it as gospel.

TL;DR
Live plants are nice, but not necessary. Crypts, mosses, and anubias are stupid easy to keep. Harlequin raboras, cherry barbs, and bettas are top tier fish. Playground sand is hard to beat for substrate.

>fish
Depends on what you're looking for. Some really easy schooling fish would be white cloud mountain minnows, zebra danios, harlequin rasboras, rosy tetras, cherry barbs, pygmy cories, among others. Galaxy rasboras and emerald dwarf rasboras are personal favorites, but they can be very difficult to keep healthy, depending on how they were collected/bred, and how they were kept at the store. Any schooling fish should be kept in a group. Exact numbers will depend on the species and who you ask, but generally around 4-6.
For [fairly] peaceful, non-schooling fish, smaller livebearers such as endlers, guppies, platies, and least killifish; small gourami such as sparkling, dwarf, or honey; peacock gudgeons; or a betta. If you're up for more of a challenge, scarlet badis, licorice gourami, and pea puffers are also options. If you want to do something completely different you can keep a pair of shell-dwelling cichlids (Neolamprologus multifasciatus). Otocinclus are very cute and very good at keeping the tank clean, but they can be rather delicate depending on how they were collected and shipped.
>>
>(cont.)
If you want as much color as physically possible, endlers are good, platies are bright (if a bit monochrome), but you can also look into killifish. You can buy dried Nothobranchius killifish eggs online (eBay) and hatch them. Fundulopanchax species are easy to take care of if you can find some for sale.
For inverts, shrimp, dwarf crayfish, and nerite snails are all very nice and easy.

>substrate
Depends on the fish and plants you want. If you're going to have bottom-dwelling fish, you should have a very soft substrate like sand or the clay-based plant substrates. There are several plants that will do perfectly fine with any substrate, but others will need nutritive substrates or substrates with high CEC to flourish.
Plain playground sand is incredibly cheap and a good all-rounder. The main downside is that it's dusty, so you have to rinse it out a lot before using it. If you want a plant substrate, any of the commonly available ones (Fluorite, EcoComplete, FloraMax) are all about the same. If you want something for plants that's also soft, I like Fluval Stratum. Others like ADA Aquasoil have nutrients baked into the substrate, but this makes setting up the tank a lot more work as you wait for the nutrient levels to stabilize.
Another method some people use is to put mineralized topsoil or potting soil on the bottom of the tank with a layer of sand or gravel on top. In practice it ends up being about the same as ADA, both in setup and efficacy. An additional downside is that you have to be very careful moving plants so as not to disturb the soil.

Sidenote: pea gravel is basically the worst substrate.
>>
>(cont.)

>plants
The fish will be fine with fake plants if that's what you want. Silk plants are arguably better for them, as there are no sharp edges or plastic hooks to scratch the fish or tear their fins.
Very low-light, low maintenance plants such as mosses, java fern, marimo, anubias, cryptocoryne, buce, and vals can be grown in plain sand and without strong lighting (even cheap LEDs are sufficient). Some floating plants like salvinia, frogbit, and pennywort also do well under fairly low light. All of those plants can also be grown without any sort of additional fertilizers, and most grow too slowly for fertilizers to make much difference anyway.
Slightly higher lighting requirements for plants such as rotala rotundifolia, myrio, bacopa, watersprite, ludwigia repens, and wisteria can be provided by any run-of-the-mill "cool white" fluorescent lamp or some higher-powered LEDs. They might struggle in plain sand, but will do well in any kind of plant substrate. Added fertilizers and CO2 or liquid carbon are very helpful, but not necessary.
Higher needs plants such as butterfly rotala, blyxa, blood vomit, and dwarf baby tears will require plant substrates, high light (multiple T5HO fluorescent bulbs or high output LEDs), added fertilizers, and probably a pressurized CO2 system.

A ten gallon is big enough for 5-8 endlers, but if you mix males and females together, you're going to end up with endless endlers and eventually have some way of disposing of them. They might eat baby shrimp, but should leave the adults alone. Thick patches of moss like java or Christmas moss can help the baby shrimp hide.

Depends on what you want. Liveaquaria is a pretty good place for common stuff.

If you're looking for something specific, specialty stores tend to be good.

I'm looking to start a low tech planted tank. Currently I have a 20 gallon with a bunch of platies and a couple of sad amazon swords.

For lighting I have a 15 W fluorescent bulb that came with the tank. Do you guys have a good light recommendation? Should I get an LED fixture or something? I'm pretty mixed up about the lighting and how the wattage, PAR, and all that stuff works so any input on that would be helpful. I should at least get a new fluorescent fixture with higher watts right?

For fertilizer, should I use Seachem flourish instead of equilibrium if the water in my area is already really hard?
Other than that, I just need potassium nitrate and potassium mono phosphate right?
>>
>>2434393
In a low tech tank, patience is your best tool.

As for lights, it depends on how much you want to spend, but in general light is going to be the least critical to spend lots of money on, because higher intensity lights are just going to need to be dimmed down or cut on hours anyway to control algae blooms.

Ferts in a low tech tank tends to be a bad idea, as it'll end up feeding algae more than the plants since you're not dosing CO2.

And anyway, if you're using flourish, KNO3 and KH2PO4, and upgrading your lighting, you're not in the low tech tank zone anymore. You might as well just dose CO2 while you're at it.

Agree
I my first plants were anacharis, no co2/ferts, ran em off LED that came with tank and sunlight
Bought a clamp light and some LED bulbs and put that up, plants started taking the carbonate from the water (fairly hard) and left a a white grit all over themselves
Running citric acid/baking soda for co2 and flourish so still fairly budget/lowtech but the plants have what they need

Well, previously mentioned Petco sale applies to 29G, so $29 for a 29G. They also have their 40G breeder, 45G, and 55G tanks for 50% off right now.

Also, a 29G tank tends not to have a whole lot of advantages over a 20G long though, as its horizontal area is the exact same, unless you have a specific need for height (e.g. Discus, although 29G is a bit small for that). If you want something bigger than a 20G long, go at least 45G/40G breeder.

Best place tends to be local fishkeeper groups. Barring that, craigslist. If you're going real big (300+ gallon), you may want to look into making the tank. Glass is pretty cheap.

I fucking hate algae
And the damn nerites I bought dont do shit except stay on the driftwood and fuck till they lay eggs. Im sick of this ive tried co2 and fertilizer to help the plants but i also have goddamn bb algae
>>
>>2434807

1. Manually remove as much algae and decomposing plant material as possible - reduce those sources of organics. Old or tatty leaves should be removed as well. trim plants hard, they'll bounce back.

2. More water changes, larger and more frequent, 50% twice weekly is a good place to start. Keep the filter media running clear, especially any filter floss or fine sponges.

3. Reduce lighting intensity and photoperiod, 5 hours a day is plenty.

4. Stick to a regular fertilisation regimen, make sure both micro and macro nutrients get dosed.

5. feed livestock less, remove any uneaten food after a couple of minutes.

Keep it up for 2 months at least. BBA is slow to go and quick to appear. If it sticks around, I would improve flow rate by upgrading the filtration. Are you still injecting CO2? If so, keep it constant, turn it on 2 hours before lights on and off an hour before. another thing to think about is whether the tank is in direct sunlight or close to a window where it otherwise gets a long photoperiod - you may have to inject more CO2 in these cases.

The difference is pretty clear if you see them. The danios are streamlined and really quick moving, the tiger barbs will have a black vertical lines, and the skirt tetrasare more rounded and come in short and long fin varieties.
The tiger barb glofish are still tiger barbs so they are pretty bad fin nippers and are pretty aggressive. The danios would probably be fine too, but they can be nippy as well if you don't have enough of them. They like big schools. The skirt tetras are probably the least aggressive of the lot and in my opinion are the prettiest. Especially the long fin variety.

Yeah but they are still tiger barbs and therefore assholes. The danios and skirt tetras are kind of ugly in their natural color.

I'm not against keeping them but they do look pretty unnatural in a normal FW set up. However, it would be pretty badass in the saltwater hobby because reefers sometimes like to light their tank with actinics only to make their corals glow so a fish that can fluoresce instead of disappear under the blues would be amazing.

Its a beautiful sapphire blue butterfly betta, and I want to ask opinions on the color of substrate (probably sand) that would make him stand out better.
I was thinking white since hes a darker blue but i dont know

also, I was considering maybe a handful of platys as tank mates, if I do does it matter which one I add to the tank first?

plants are simple enough, I ll probably just go through the could of LFS in town to see what they got for like eel grass or anubias

>>
>>2436672
If you want to use a filter that big you'll want to baffle it. Rasboras are sensitive to high flow and the filter is liable to blow away your sand cap.

I greatly prefer mineralized topsoil over potting soil. MTS requires you to spend a lot of time prepping the soil, but using potting soil means frequent, massive water changes for several weeks.
I used the "cheating" method when I did my MTS and just poured boiling water over it, dried it out, and repeated.

Freshwater nerites are from Africa. If you want biotope-appropriate cleanup, Amano shrimp occur in Thailand and panda garra are from Burma (although the garra might disturb the substrate).
>>
>>2436726
Convict cichlids. They have a reputation for being pretty nasty and breeding out of control. Very good as feeders if yours start mating.
>>
>>2436730

>>
>>2436729

>>
>>2436639
Well 1 axolotl can live happily in a 10 gallon tank so you may not need a 75 gallon. As far as care goes, WATER CHANGES WATER CHANGES they are very sensitive so buildups of anything so keep a water testing kit around and do a water change anytime the ammonia goes up. They need pristine water conditions.

A 75 gallon gives you way too many options to list. What kinds of things are you interested in?

Axolotls are really easy. You should use find grain sand or smooth rocks at least twice the size of their head. Avoid anything sharp that might tear their skin. Keeping the water cool (72 or lower being ideal) is important. Frozen 2 liter water bottles can be used if it gets warm, or a cooling fan. A full chiller is useful, but expensive. Light should be dim and don't use any added chemicals besides dechlorinator. Hikari carnivore pellets are good as a dry food. Earthworms and insects are also good food. You'll need a high capacity filter that's also low flow. Canister filters are good for this because the output can be directed at a tank wall. Or you can use a cheap HOB filter and just baffle the output.
Small shrimp and snails can be kept in the tank as live feeders. Don't use larger snails like nerites and mystery because they can choke on them. I wouldn't recommend feeder fish because they can bite at the axolotl's gill filaments. The only suggested tankmates would be some other axolotls. Anything small might get eaten by the axolotl and anything large can take chunks out of the axolotl.

>>2436756
10 gallons would be extremely cramped for a fully grown 8-10 inch axolotl.
Granted, 75 gallons is overkill for a single one, but he could keep a few of them together without much issue.

Will a trash can not break? I've actually been trying to find a big water barrel today buy but no one sells anything. Trash can is a good idea though if I can find a sturdy one.

>>2436812
Only like 6 hours. Its a cheap t8 or some that came with the aquarium. But the rocks are awfully close to it so that probably doesn't help.
>>
>>2436840
You can use pretty much whatever you want as filter material, so long as it doesn't have anything that will leach into the water. I buy cotton batting in bulk because it's easy to rinse.
A coarse foam (or some sort of sock) is better for prefilters, too dense or fine of material cuts off too much flow.
>>
>>2436856
Wouldn't cotton rot/get eaten by certain (mostly microscopic) things? Wouldn't nylon or poly batting be better?

Part of my looking around is trying to research "does this have anything that may or may not leech, or does it potentially have harmful dusts in it from manufacturing" and sometimes such information is hard to find. Like trying to get ideas about PAR ratings for random light bulbs at Lowe's. I've sort of given up on DIY/nonspecialized lighting solutions since a Nicrew for my tank is 30 bucks, and even a Finnex+ 24/7 Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Growlight is only 73 bucks.

Still looking into building my own hood for a 20g-tall tank that will accomodate my HOB, cords for my heater and circulator, and will fit a light UNDER it. It also needs to withstand my cat. Right now my best solution is one of those wire mesh terrarium lids, which I took a small saw to to cut out one corner for the HOB and my heater. My 36W Archaea T5 light is just resting on top of it making it rather warm, and the mesh is killing my light intensity (which might be helping me, honestly.

Tiger barbs would tear them up, but there are tons of small, peaceful barbs that would be okay with adult amano shrimp. I have cherry barbs with mine. Others like snakeskin and five-line barbs would also be safe.

It's really easy to baffle a filter. You can use a cut up water bottle to do it.

Fluval stratum doesn't have any nutrients in it, but it has a high CEC which is good for plants and makes root tabs and liquid fertilizers more effective. It works well, but not as well as the other options being discussed.

>>2436751
There's only one website I've seen that sells it pre-mineralized and they're always out of stock. Regular topsoil is usually $2-3 for a cubic foot (the cheap stuff is actually preferable for this), which is enough for a 55-75 gallon tank depending on the amount of debris in the bag.

The mineralization process takes 2-4 weeks if done the "correct" way. The way I did it would take a couple days. You could do a small batch in a single day if you used an oven, but it'll stink your house up really badly.

>>2436840
It's just called "coarse foam." It's not used in very many other applications, but you can find large sheets of it for cheap from Asian vendors on Amazon and eBay.

I've read RODI water will still contain (due to the method) any particles that are not explicitly chemically filtered or removed by the DI unit which are as big or smaller than the water molecules, but I'm curious what all would be common in city water that would make it through an RODI unit if I were to buy one. Mostly I am curious if the products and processes required to get RODI water prepped for a tank are at all different from using distilled water?

It's kind of a still debated topic, but most people agree RO water is 99% identical to distilled.
>>
>>2437108
Distilled water is PURE water with no minerals. RO water is left with some
>>
>>2436927
It depends on the RODI unit, some filter better than others and you can also buy additional cartridges that eliminate stuff a normal unit lets go.

The main thing you're going to get in most of the world is silica since your standard RODI doesn't remove it. Silica feeds diatoms, but that's about it.
>>
>>2437106
They should have it at any home improvement store like Home Depot, usually in gallon jugs.
>>
>>2437120
RO will leave behind small molecules.
DI will leave behind unionized molecules.
Distilled will leave behind anything that evaporates at close to the same temperature as water.

RO/DI is far more effective than distilling for making very pure water, but for hobbyist purposes, and especially for freshwater, it really doesn't matter which one you use.

>>
>>2437201
Chlorine will dissipate, but things like calc or heavy metals won't. If these are present in your water you're better off buying a bottle of binding agent and adding a capful for each ten litres.

Okay so I'm thinking of getting a 5 gallon mini-tank to downgrade from my 10 gal which is too big for my little apartment. Gonna be a freshwater tank. The 10 gal is empty from when my parents practically killed everything after I left on a vacation. I want a Betta and something else but can't decide what. Can I fit any schooling fish in a 5 gal with a betta if it's planted?
>>
>>2437300
>10 gal which is too big

sheit

I don't recommend any schooling fish for a 5 gal but shoaling fish can be fine since the body count can be lower

depends on your betta, inverts are generally fine but he will eat baby shrimp and possibly murder small adults. even if he is super rood a relatively large snail won't be bothered much. try some grown ghost shrimp, if he doesn't bully them then try some real shrimp like caridina and neocaridina
>>
>>2437319
Honestly I won't be too pissed if the shrimp gets eated. I baught him by mistake anyway. What kind of shoaling fish? I wanted to get a few neon tetras. I don't need anything big or impressive in there but I fear guppies would be abused by the betta

Can any /an/ons help me out? I didn't see a betta thread and I didn't want to start one since I had questions about the aquarium set up like pic related.

I'm leaning towards a 10gal since I'll just have the 1 fish and maybe a snail or 2. I really want a nice biotope set up for the little guy but I don't even know where to begin. I've been doing research online but I'd like some advice from anyone with experience since I've only ever done fake plants as a kid.

>What's some recommended plants for beginners?
>How many plants should I have in a 10gal tank to create a comfortable environment for the betta?
>Should I place the plants in the tank before or after the tank cycle?
>Do I need to let the plants live and grow for awhile by themselves before adding any fish?
>Any other recommendations or advice
>>
>>2437360
If you're adding 1 betta to a ten gallon planted tank it's idiot proof. I'm sure other people will be able to tell you the correct methods but it's pretty hard to fuck up what you're doing
>>
>>2437319
Or get something like java moss. Glue some of it around a piece of driftwood. The shrimp will love to eat various detritus that gets stuck in the moss, and they and their shrimplets can hide in it when they get stressed out, or molt. I've kept cherry shrimp with convict cichlids for years with no problem thanks to the moss. Sometimes I'll think it finally failed and the shrimp all got ate, but then the next week I'll spot another bunch of shrimp.
>>
My city is facing a heat wave, and even with the heater off my tank regularly hits 27 and 28 degrees. How long before the fish start taking harm.
>>
>>2437360
>What's some recommended plants for beginners?
Anubias, mosses and cryptocoryne are my top recommendations. Java fern, buces, vals, dwarf sag, swords, and most floating plants are also easy.

>How many plants should I have in a 10gal tank to create a comfortable environment for the betta?
Enough to make a "private area," and some broad leaved plants for him to rest on. You could get by with just three or four, but more is always better.

>Should I place the plants in the tank before or after the tank cycle?
Before. They help with the cycling process.

>Do I need to let the plants live and grow for awhile by themselves before adding any fish?
No, but it's better to add the fish after the cycle, so they'll be able to grow in during the cycling process.

>Any other recommendations or advice
Feed moderately, use a low-flow filter. Get a couple nerite snails and/or Amano shrimp if you want algae control. Root tabs make a big difference for plants.

This video does a pretty good job of indirectly explaining rules of proportions for aquascaping. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTndI3A2rOQ
>>
>>2437360
you almost can't kill java ferns. I've seen multiple plants survive bleachings.
Anubias, as said before, are hardy.
Aponogeton ulvaceus will overgrow in a 10g, even with low light, but if you're willing to do a lot of upkeep it makes a neat plant.
>>
>>2437402
Depends on the species I guess. My mollies have been tolerating temps from 80-88 for 2 weeks now and they look good still. I think the most important thing if you can't control temperature is to have proper gas exchange in a tank and make sure the water is always pristine because things break down faster in higher temps.

Can I get a rate? Just finished stocking and planting my 70 litre (ausfag). I'm new to the hobby and this is really my first tank, I'm honestly rather happy with it and can't wait for all my plants to grow in.

Right now it's 6/7 types of plants, a big branch I cleaned and treated, sand substrate, double HOB filters, two LEDs and the animal stock is 10 ember tetras, 10 green neons, 5 corydoras hasbrosus, 2 otos, a pair of peacock gudgeons and a male betta. Not sure if I should feel smart for identifying what it was meant to be, or stupid for not being able to tell for sure if it was real.

so i was gone for the past three days and I come back to see one of my clown loaches (I have two) lying on its side. The other keeps nudging it, trying to get it to swim. It swam to the top and now it's just chilling right below the waterline.

Wtf could've happened to him? The other fish in the tank are doing fine.

Upon further inspection, I noticed he's missing his whiskers that loaches are supposed to have.

What kind of fishy is that? He could make any tank great again.

Please tell me you have a snail called Hillary.

glowlight tetras or platys for a ten gallon betta tank?
>>
I'm planning on starting to fertilize my tank, along with DIY co2. Is it worth it to also get a better light while I'm at it?

The current light gives less than 1watt/gallon. I don't want it to be too bright, cause I don't want too much plant growth and have to fertilize everyday.

so should I get a new light or nah

neither dipshit use google

Gold Gourami, I believe it was stated.

>>2439233
Watt/Gallon seems outdated now. What light do you have?
>>
>>2439279
It's a fluorescent bulb that came with the tank, says 15W on it. I don't know much about lighting, what's a more up to date way of measuring?
>>
>>2439352
Increasing Co2 without appropriately increasing lighting and fertilization can cause problems. The stock fluorescents are barely acceptable for plants in my experience. There are a lot of ways you can upgrade, depending on budget and whether you can swap the hood or ditch it entirely.
>>
>>2439243
i dont know what an opinion has to do with google but ok
>>
>>2439184
Why not get cherry Barbs? They are really great fish! Just be sure to get more females (brown) than males (red). Either that or get a bunch or Cory cats and a mystery snail. Between the two you listed, I would do platies. Neither is really a great choice though.
>>
>>2439531
is there a reason why my initial choices don't work?
I was under the impression that bettas really only chase fish with flowy fins
we have a betta in with our red wag and sunset platys in our store and they might as well not exist to him
>>
>>2439352
Watt is still a useful measure for fluorescents. It's LEDs that need lumen (or lux, or candlepower). You can google conversion tables for how strong your LEDs need to be to equal a certain wattage light.
>>
>>2439445
What kind of problems? I'm super down to upgrade, I just really don't want to have to fertilize more than once a week since I'm often not home.

I could potentially drop some $$ on some expensive lights if you think that would be good. What lights would you recommend?
>>
>>2439540
Well platies like hard water and Bettas prefer softer, but I guess glowlights could work in that regard, but the thing is you have a ten gallon tank. Glowlights like to school and such a small tank doesn't really allow a big group. Either one will survive, but they won't really thrive either. If you really want them go ahead and get them. I am sure they will be fine, but there are lots of equally pretty fish that would do better in the parameters that Bettas like.
