First for cute droseras.

I just ordered me a Drosera Auriculata tuber because I just learned about these and they look fucking amazing. Any and all info about caring for these is welcome.
Also bought a Nepenthes veitchii x N. platychila from the same site (http://carnivoria.eu/, they have a lot of super cool species). I understand this is a low/highland hybrid, what can I expect from such a combination? I've only had an N. Alata many years ago, which required very little care.

Newbie question here

I have this thingy and I'd like to grow something in it. My whole hobbyist portfolio is an avocado and two droseras grown off of seeds. My current room doesn't have windows that would let direct sunlight in.

Any suggestions?

No, where did you get that idea from? I mean it's an easy hybrid and it'll survive in a wide range of temperatures, but it's not lowland x highland by any means (intermediate x intermediate more like).

If you have no light, then I don't see how putting something in a big jar will help.

The climate preferences of hybrids average out between the two parents usually. Both of those parents are closer to intermediate than lowland and highland anyway. It'll be easy and adapt to house conditions.

What kind are they?
I remember the first time I tried my hand at carnivorous plants, my drosera capensis spread to all pots.

Burmanii
They only live a year but spread as fast as capensis
>>
So I've got a ~20 germinated tomato plants.

How much soil / depth should I give them? Could I put them in a grid on my roof gutter for extra space?

Overnight vinegar soak works wonders for rust removal. Take a dremel or drill with a wire brush attachment to it afterwards.
>>
>>2401064
That's a really good idea, I've been hunting for a wire brush drill attachment for a month or two but you can not buy things that you need in the appalachians. I can't even get a pair of shoes. Going to put it in vinegar now, have two gallons of it. Maybe it will come out sharp when the layer of rust goes away. Thanks.
>>
I had this plant for a few years and its doing something weird, I have never seen it change colour like this before
>>
>>2401076
I've been having lots of purple turn up on my plants like pepperoncini, jade, broccoli and garlic this year. Maybe just the cold. It's 50 degrees mid day in June, I have no idea what's going on or if this is what's affecting the plant colors, but Obama did just spend 8 years spraying chemicals all over us and it's blocking sunlight, which is exactly what they said they were doing.
>>
>>2401003
Salt and potato.
https://youtu.be/BRVtqQQi1FI
>>
>>2401097
That's kind of shocking, I'm going for vinegar first because the blade is pretty narrow and has hundreds of divots that would evade this treatment, but if the vinegar misses shit I'll go for this and post the fixed up tool tomorrow. I don't need it that bad but it's a $30 tool and will always do the same job, so I'd like it around.
>>

We still get high 80s~low 90s here. This week it's just a bit colder because it rained earlier. Now it's just plain cloudy. This past February was frickin' ridiculous, though, as well as not this past December, but the one before that. We had an incredibly muggy Christmas that year.
>>
>>2401101
The salt/tater worked about halfway, I know I need to scrub more but I keep dropping my taters over the porch into the yard into a bush I can't get them out of. I hope I have nothing adverse come from putting 6 cups of vinegar in the tub and laying the tool inside, which I am going for next. Not posting pictures because it's still fucking brown.

9 more varieties added today. I wonder how this will affect the industry if the illegal orange is in so many of their reds, pinks, and purples? I guess they must have libraries of older stuff somewhere and new ones are coming out every year.

No idea, I had them a couple of years but they grow very fast if you fertilize them. They multiply readily as well. In fact I have a hole tub of at least fist sized corms right now.

I don't know, if there is any illegal underground trade for petunias it'd likely be the orange ones if any. Might be some little old ladies trying to keep them IDK.

I mean the companies could decide to do the expensive paperwork and testing and bring the orange back. As for the pinks, reds and purples, they probably have other varieties they can fill in their catalogues with. Unless the orange has gotten into everything. I do wonder at how much they will have to toss.

No. They're easy as hell to propagate, too. I remember a guy here last year posting his capensis that was living underneath the moss in his flytrap pot. They'll survive any way they can, basically, but you do have a minimum standard of care for them, as with most plants.

hey thats very neato guy, why does it need repotting? has the medium been consumed? When i got my C.fimbriatum i no only repotted it but i acctually dismounted the three pseudobulds from a piece of brach, this was a couple of days before fall and even with the shock of the shipment, plus the dismounting
it holded pretty them gud. if you look pic related, the base of the pseudobulb on the middle you can see a little piece of green root, that is a new root that grew after a hole fkn fall.
Also most catasetums like to be re potted in mid spring

Well just the dish soap is off the list. None of that you want on the plant anyways, oil blocks pores and sunlight, vinegar kills shit, baking soda is just powdered salt and dish soap also blocks sun and damages leaves.

17 Hours in vinegar on that rusty tool because I'm a drunkard and keep passing out, I'll scrub it soon but my tub is sure to smell like shit for days.

Here's the big reveal: I need to get a knife and tediously scrape this shit, however vinegar guy was right. We'll have a brand new tool in a day or two when I stop drinking and start giving a fuck, but I'll go back at it with salt and taters at sunrise. There's definitely clean metal under here.
>>
>>2402347
>why does it need repotting?
It appears to be in nearly poor sphagnum moss (which is good), but that has become very compacted. I fear the roots get not enough air and it won't drain or dry properly.

Get a D. Capensis, they grow like weed. You can just dig em up & pull them apart if you notice they have multiple 'cores' (you'll know what I mean when you see it, it's super obvious), and plant em in new pots. See pic, left one cost me ~$4 in a generic shop, right is about half of what I got out of it, all thriving.
They move to curl around prey, not nearly as fast as a flytrap of course, but they can still move quite a bit in ~30 minutes, still very cool.
And they don't need live prey, you can feed em crushed ants or even fishfood (wet it a tiny bit so it's gooey and put it in a leaf).
>>
>>2402549
Basic pointers:
>only rainwater, destilled water, or RO water
>keep it outside asmuch as possible unless it's freezing, they love light
>if it produces dew, all is well
>don't feed it stuff that's much bigger than a leaf, it'll mold
>soil: peat/perlite mix 1:1, or peat/moss, or peat/CLEAN white sand
>>
>>2402549
That's the only flytrap I'd ever bother to own.

Does it improve drainage if you put a layer of gravel to the bottom of a planter, then placing a geotextile fabric on it to prevent the substrate from washing through the gravel and clogging the drainage holes in the planter?

Hello /plant/! I posted in an earlier thread, I was looking to start my first garden on the balcony of my apartment. For reference, I live in Greece (mediterranean climate), and my balcony gets plenty of indirect sunlight and plenty of shade, but no direct sunlight unfortunately.
So, I went out yesterday and got myself my first plants! Following the help of the guy at the shop, I got a mint and a lavender, that I'm planning to put in the same long pot (the guy told me to only water the mint, so that the lavender doesn't take over the entire pot. He also told me that those two herbs were ideal for shade).
I also got one of these beauties, I wasn't planning on it but I liked it the moment I saw it. The guy told me it's called Fuchsia, and that it's gonna do ok on my balcony.
Anyways, today I'm preparing to move them from their little pots to the bigger ones I got for them. Can anyone give me some advice or maybe a link for a good guide on how to go about this from now on? I read that I should put coffee filters on the bottom of my pots, so that the water drains but the soil doesn't fall, would /plant/ recommend it? Also, I saw that the fuchsia looks great on a hanging basket, but unfortunately I only got a regular pot for it, and it's also pretty developed already - it's at half a meter high I'd say. Should I go and move it to the regular pot? Will I have a chance to move it to a hanging basket?

They're a good baby friendly plant, though. Unless you're Reddit. I still have no idea how you can fuck up as badly as r/SavageGarden does on a daily basis.
>>
>>2402578
Yes that's a standard addition but not many people actually need to do it unless we're talking cactuses. Whatever you're growing probably needs that space for roots and less drainage because soil set up like this dries extremely fast and can require two waterings a day in a plant like tomato, but yes that does accelerate drainage a lot.

Did it? All dirt selling companies bake their dirt to kill bacteria, fungus, insects and weeds. It does kill "beneficial soil microbes" whatever the fuck they are though. The dirt becomes sterile and only minerals remain, I notice plants like peppers grow HORRIBLY BAD in sterile dirt, but it has it's uses. You should just buy a soil mix and dig clay, dry it, powder it, mix it in and then add epsom (magnesium/sulfur) and smoke tons of cigarettes and add the ashes. But not firesafe paper cigarettes, they are poison, use little cigars and regular cigars.

It's like the branch forgot how to grow leaves, but tried again every five centimeters but said "fuck it" and kept on going.

>>2404054
why so low? what are you planting?
I use bat shit/rabbit shit (guano, idk if in English you have a different word for it) for my succulents and edibles, i believe that the ratio for that is 9-8-9 but the problem i find is that those organic fertilizers have a very slow rate of assimilation.
mineral fertilizers (there are a few in the market that are organic) are much faster but the npk ratio is killer ( 18-11-19 or things like that).
My advice (aldo it would be gud to know what are you growing) to you would be go with a little of rabbit shit diluted in declorified water (leave the bucket 48 hs outdoors, the more sunlight the better), again if you are going to use it immediately you can use an aquarium pump in the mix for 24 hs, that boosts the assimilation rate.

why wouldn't i use it? isnt supposed to be used in organic plantations?
If it is about the fungus it brings to the soil i use trichoderms for the lower, i know a ton of people who use trico as a kind of biological funguicide and truly never knew someone who poisoned himself for using guano (not by the guano itself and not by Histoplasmosis nor any of that shit)

I need to go and buy some cheap cookware to mod into shallow pots so my tropical cacti stop root-rotting.

Serious pro-tip. If you're planting those, try for shallow pots. Minimal dirt for the root mass. You want things to dry out instead of retaining moisture, and so traditional pots are a death sentence.
>>
>>2405789
Well, not necessarily root rotting. What happens is I check on them and all the green plant bits have melted into goo.
>>
>>2405789
It sounds like it would be considerably easier to just repot them into something free-draining. If things have literally turned to goo then you're probably doing things very wrong - how much light and water are they getting?

So I got myself a little Perle von Nurnberg on a whim. I know it's a cactus but how much am I actually supposed to water it? Every few days? Weeks? Once a month? All I can really find is "occasionally," and "regularly until it establishes a root system."

Tomatoes everywhere. Watermelon, green beans and garlic in there too.
Shallow tray is because I'm finding that vegetables just STOP until they find the bottom of their pot. It does not work like these mystical claims say it does. It does nothing but clog pores and block the air flow onto the area, which agitates burn. Use petroleum jelly. Spider plants and host as are also completely useless. Carnivorous plants are the same, use a flytrap, they're 20 cents a pop.

They're one of the few edible plants that can be grown in permanent shade. They're perennial and can be harvested year on year and are highly effective weed suppression. Damn good for any shady part of a permaculture garden, or any garden, as long as you're not living in a desert.
>>
>>2406837
They're EDIBLE?
Holy shit I've been mistaken. What do you do, boil them?

And yes, they suppress weeds because of their 10 square foot root system per bulb.
>>
>>2406848

>10 square foot root system per bulb.

What?

Anyway, the edible part is the leaf shoot while it's unfurling in spring, depending on the variety (i.e. thickness of the shoot), you can either boil them or pan fry them. They go well with soy sauce, rice wine vinegar and sesame oil.
>>
>>2406848
>And yes, they suppress weeds because of their 10 square foot root system per bulb.
I think you're the same anon who complained about hosta roots before.
Honestly, you're doing it wrong. I've transplanted many of them, from small cuttings to 4-5' wide bushes. While it's true they can have an expansive root system there is no need to take every inch of the established roots. A sharp shovel 6-8" down along the drip ring of the plant is all you have to dig. Leave the rest of that shit to rot, the plant won't grow back. The hardest thing about digging up large hostas is simply the weight, and that only matters if you are trying to keep it all together.
The actual reason they are good for weed control is not much grows under them, due to lack of light.
Regardless, you don't like hostas, I get it. While you are entitled to your opinion, there is no need to spread misinformation.
>>
>>2406869
Yes, I am, but problem is I've only ever dug up a 10-20 year old hosta and I project A LOT. I just don't like the prevalence and intense process of digging old ones up.

Now, I'm a total beginner, and all I've done so far is repot the plants and water them when the soil dried up every couple of days or so this past week. Any advice for taking care of these particular plants? What should be my next step, fertilize? prune my fuchsia maybe?
>>
>>2406890
Fuchia like shade so you got that. Where I am some are hardy and some aren't but you're somewhere warmer so it could be perennial. Deadhead for more flowers, although I find the seed pods/fruit kinda neat. The stem the pods are on will snap off. Just be careful you don't take off nearby stems that still have flowers going at the same time. Pinch prune a little to keep it bushy and not get giant arms going out.

Like, I get that this is just your opinion but that's such a bleak view on gardening. It can be enjoyable to grow difficult things that offer nothing beyond the challenge, just as it can be enjoyable to grow something simple because one enjoys its aesthetics.
>>
I impulse bought a pitcher plant and I was hoping I might be able to get advice for careing for it. I already know they need to be kept wet pretty much constantly - although I don't really know how to get mineral free water?

Is there anything else they need that's important? Sorry if I sound dumb as shit but I don't want it to die.
>>
>>2407154
Also you could argue that a use for ornamentals would be just eyecandy. A plant being eyecandy is as valid a reason for it's existence as being a food source.
>>
>>2407160
Which one?
Mist them whenever you can, they like humidity. Keep the soil wet, but do not have it standing in a dish with water or anything. Lots of light, not too much direct sunlight.
You can either buy a reverse osmosis thingy to make your own carnivorous-plant-safe water, or buy distilled water. Or ask around if someone has a rainwater barrel.
>>
>>2407153
Trident maple. Maybe.

>>2407154
I actually do agree, I love pretty plants, but only a few. I told you I was narrow minded and project. I don't like a lot of stuff, I'm autistic.
Difficult to grow is actually a cool aspect, but nothing is even difficult to grow but corpse flowers and I wouldn't have access to them. Everything in gardening is piss easy, except organic gardening pest control, maybe that's where the appeal can become lost. I will never like carnivores, but I would also be happy to have a rare plant. I'm really neutral plus or minus a couple things, the more common the plant, the worse it is.

>>2407162
I agree, this is a valid use. Except Japanese maple and hosta. I have no access to eye candy plants without paying $30 per square foot to my neighbor, who charges outrageous fees and doesn't start seeds, he ships them in and his plants die. He sold me a 6 square foot peace lily that died in 4 days, complete bullshit for a dude that owns a flower shop.
>>
>>2407160
There are three/four different kinds of pitcher plants each with very different needs, is it a Nepenthes, Sarracenia, Heliamphora or Darlingtonia? Nepenthes is tropical and assuming you live in a temperate climate should be kept indoors (the ones you find in stores generally are hybrids that grow well enough on a windowsill). Sarracenia is temperate and should grow outdoors in a bog, just like Darlingtonia (which tends to be more fussy but is also a lot cooler looking). Heliamphora needs a lot of light but cool temperatures and should stay indoors unless you live on a mountain in Guyana.

You can find distilled or demineralised water at your local supermarket, or you can use rainwater. It's not that big of a deal if you water them with tap water once if they need watering and you've run out of 'good' water, just don't do it often.
>>
>>2407216

You folks said to put it outside in full sun, which I did, and I'm misting it 2-3x a day, but it's looking kind of iffy now, and the butterwort is all but gone. Are they just adjusting? Will the butterwort grow back?
>>
>>2407220
Chlorine is not really the problem, it's the total dissolved solids, which can be at most about 100 ppm (parts per million). Tap water is often already 300 ppm if not more.

>>2407246
Uh, well, it shouldn't be doing that. There still seems to be some green at least. I guess it was grown in a more shaded environment before so it got fried. With a bit of luck it'll recover, even if it doesn't look like it's doing anything for a while. Don't mist Pinguicula though, it takes away the mucilage so they have to put energy into producing it again.
>>
>>2407246

Oh btw it's most likely Pinguicula primuliflora. If you look it up you'll see more people have had problems with putting it in full sun.

I told you that butterworts don't tolerate direct sunlight.
The sarracenia should be fine once it adapts
>>
>>2407176
>>2407216
Thank you both; it's a Sarrecenia. I live in the UK so it's not an ideal climate for tropical plants but it came in a glass container that seems to be holding the moisture in pretty well.

I bought it on sale and I think it was on sale because one of the pitchers (would you call it a leaf?) looks mouldy/like it's dying, should I be worried? I can get a picture if necessary.

I want to expand but they're already taking too much room for their own good. I have high walls surrounding my small garden so they don't get as much light as they could. If my make them into more pots I won't be able to keep them all on the table.
Can I not just grow them straight on my walls, like, vertically?
>>
>>2407551
Get it outside, sarracenia are not tropical plants.
In fact, some have become naturalized in the uk

so what happens when they hatch? maggots all over the floor?
>>
>>2407569
Yup. Lot of tiny maggots. I've put the plants in a big, black bowl and luckily the maggots die in a few hours out in the sun with nothing to eat.

Oh, that's pretty neat, thank you.

Hey /plant/, need a bit of advice

So I just bought a Coconut plant in Lidl, it's about 160cm tall (5'3 feet) kinda like pic related, I find it absolutely beautiful. Is there anything I should know about growing it? I put it on our porch in a half shade for now, should I keep it there, or can I just put it in the full sun?

I know they're kinda a tropical species, so I've been wondering how much will it grow in Central Europe (Hungary)? Also, when is it worth re-potting it, bringing it inside, how should I water it, that kinda info I'd appreciate if somebody could share it.

Lets say i divert part of my pind into a bog in a rubbermaid tub. Constant slow circulation back to the pond. Do u see there being any problems. Also high nitrates and different adnon
>>
>>2407641
bog is nutrient poor and acidic. you have to prevent pond water from entering your bog.
>>
>>2407551
Yeah, sorry, my reply >>2407176
was thinking about Nephentes.
Sarracenia do like standing in water, and can go outside.

Sarracenia are surely one of the most written-about plants for noobs on the internet, get googling. Get it in a deep tray of water, unless you're down South or in some city shithole tapwater should be fine. Either stick it in a very sunny conservatory (if you've got one) or a sunny and sheltered spot outside. They're incredibly easy if you can be arsed to get the basics right.

Thanks for the help mate! I did some work today after looking up all the advice you gave, pinched the tops of my mint because it's growing tall and also I tried to deadhead my fuchsia. I ended up removing a bunch of wilted and dried flowers - most of them just came off, the rest I pinched the stem off a couple of centimeters away from the pod.
Unfortunately as I was checking it I discovered a bunch of green extremely small locust-like insects on a fresh flower of my plant (aphids? that's what google gives me). I pinched it off with all of them on it and threw it away, and I couldn't find any other of them on my plant. Wat do?
>>
>>2407680
Oh shit, yeah, aphids like fuchsia. There's a lot of different ways to try and kill them aphids, from soapy water to pesticide to ladybugs. The main thing with any spray you decide on is to get ALL of the plant because fucking eggs.

IS PLANT IN NEED A NEW TRIPFAG? BECAUSE YOU HAVE ONE NOW

I promise to memebump the thread and to make /plant/ great again!

congrats of making it into the filter with your first post

They're very hard to grow outside the tropics because of their constant need for extreme sun light and warmth. They might survive during summer outside but during the winter you'd have to light it with 400W+ sodium lamps for 12+ hours a day. Also, if you manage to keep it alive, they grow very large, it will be difficult to fit it anywhere. A normal leaf is several meters long, what you see on the plants being sold are merely cotyledons.

They're literally quick-buck plants which are sold to ignorant people (no offense). They survive for a while because of their large nut even though their roots are cut to fit in the pot etc. but usually once the energy is depleted, they die.

Behind a blind and a double glass window,

Is this enough light for my brand new sarracenia carolina yellow jacket? I looked inside and didn't see any fluid, does it need rainwater to build up its digesting juices?

dont know why people do it, im just curious on the whereabouts of this particular anon.
also knowing where does the pic come from is helpful, i mean it tells a lot about climate and shit.
I mean growing cactuses in sonora is no big deal, now someone who does the same shit in
Iceland is a fucking master
>>
>>2407763
Also it's a purpurea hybrid, they don't produce digestive fluids, they use bacteria that live inside their pitchers and the pitchers fill with rainwater and moisture.
Which you should have plenty of being in the uk

Geranium maculatum https://g.co/kgs/fBxBHc
I'll be growing this along a rock wall eventually.
One of my favorites in the fall.
>>
>>2407690
Alright, thanks a lot. I'll make a mix with soap + water and spray my plant tomorrow, see how that goes.

I also have another beginner question, regarding watering this time: Should I really water my plants until water drains out of the bottom of the pot?
When I first repotted my plants I put the mint and the lavender in one long pot with soil and a coffee filter at the bottom so that water drains but soil doesn't fall. I then watered the pot with almost 2 liters of water waiting for some to drain but it didn't. Should I have watered it more and should I in general water my plants with that in mind? Sounds dumb but I don't wanna mess up my plants, and that felt like a lot of water.
>>
>>2407705
Well now I'm totally bummed. I really want to keep this plant alive.
In my defense, pretty much all of our houseplants come from the tropics, so I didn't think this palm would be any different from the ones we already have.

>>
>>2408172
Most plants sold as houseplants are "understory" plants which grow in the most shaded areas in tropical forests, i.e. at the very bottom - or are very tolerant of shade in general.

That's why these plants are a pretty good fit for homes because people will usually give them the least amount of light possible and they will still grow.

Still, good luck with your coconut palm.
