The plant general: Archaeamphora edition
So is this thing an ancient pitcher plant or not?
>Also, I think it looks a bit dry, I recommend watering it a bit more

Welcome to /plant/, the magical green place on this blue board. ITT: We summon plont, grow avocados and also, RIP S. Flava division. Press 'F' to pay respects.

/Plant/ is for the discussion of plants (obviously). Horticulturists, hobbyists and botanists welcome! Questions about plants? Want to show off your two inch dick-I mean plant? Maybe you want to start growing something new and exciting? Well come on over to /plant/!

Introducing a new basic caresheet with every thread:
Sarracenia purpurea
>Full sun
>plenty of water
>dank purps don't give a shit about horrifyingly low humidity
>If temperatures reach 100F or 40C, make sure plant does not dry out
A dry sarracenia is a dead sarracenia
>Plant will begin to produce smaller and smaller pitchers starting in late august, in preparation for dormancy
S. purpurea ssp. venosa does not need a dormancy period to survive (it may eventually grow slower, but won't die) but S. purpurea ssp. purpurea does
>Both plants are extremely cold hardy
>Soil mix: Mostly peat moss, mix with fine orchid bark, LFS, perlite, coconut husk etc to aid with drainage. Silica sand and perlite are the best options as add-ins.

Also, I thought my S. leucophylla 'pubescent' was going to die, but apparently not

I wanted to trim my b52's dead leaves and I ended up separating its divisions.
Well, I hope that at least the big one lives, buying them in August was a mistake.

Hey, I live in an apartment with no south or north facing walls and 2 cats

I have a plan to hang up a shelving unit so the cats can't get to it, and then put a grow light over it so the plants can get enough light.

My question is whether this is feasible. When I try to look up grow lights all I can find is how to start a weed growing operation, not just grow some pretty house plants
>>
>>2208807
>with no north or south facing walls
So you just have two walls?
>>
>>2208807
It's possible, just make sure you have some high output lighting or you can grow shade loving plants on an east or west window. A lot of plants require very little light so you may be surprised at what you can get to grow

Heh, I know people that use weed illumination to grow carnivorous plants, just see of it's what the species you want need.

Last dionaea pic of the day, b52 x b52 seedlings. Will any of them become a giant like b52? I doubt it.

>>

ok, 2 options:

>you're keeping both of them in the house
cacti (especially Astrophytum) don't do well under apartment conditions

>you're keeping both outside
good for the cactus, the cat should be strangled
>>
>>2209711
Not sure, all the media tipped out and the plant went with it, doesn't seem to be much root damage though.
>>2209718
Indoor cat and indoor cactus. I know it's not ideal but superkabuto seems to be a fairly easy cultivar, and it's done ok on a sunny windowsill for about 4 years so far. In the UK outdoors isn't an option unfortunately.

It would do much better outside (denser wool and shit). Can't you put it on the ouside window sill over the summer?

Nah, we have laughably unstable weather through summer so it would easily get blown over by the wind and would likely get pissed through with rain at least 3 days a week (legitimately not an exaggeration)
>>
I buried some sunflower seeds from my snack pack in a pot for shits and giggles and they sprouted overnight. Is this normal? Google says it takes a week normally.

Will they stand a chance at surviving the winter indoors in Norway? Temp isn't a problem but days are really short.

They catch plenty of springtails by themselves, I'm not really in a rush to fertilise or anything. I put an osmocote pellet near a seedling in the past and it quickly deteriorated, so I'm not too willing to risk it again. I have a few more species/hybrids just leaving the delicate seedling stage with no extra feeding, so I guess I'll wait it out for aristolochioides too. Pic related is aristo from a different batch... much much darker, I can only assume one of them isn't the real thing.

Thanks for suggestions, I've found that it is apparently Aloe ferox. It fits the location of the photo (South Africa) and the size of the plant (up to 3 meters, this is why it looks pretty big even compared to giraffe).
Pretty weird and cool-looking thing.
>>
>>2212516
Yeah, in my experience only sarracenia benefit from osmocote, flytraps too but the algae growth it induces may suffocate them. Anyway I've been feeding them this year with insects and I'm very happy with the results, I'll have lots of sarraenia flowers next spring.

Your neps are pretty cool, I'd like to have nice lowlands but I can only have resilient intermediate hybrids that can survive in a cold greenhouse in winter; getting a miranda this tuesday!

Anyone got an idea what could be the issue with my birch tree? (B. pubescens I think, about 10m tall)
It already grew only like 1/5 or less of is usual amount of foliage back in spring, and now many start yellowing and dropping already (way too early)
Last year was a bit dry here (peaked at around the top 50cm of soil) and many trees in the surroundings yellowed in August already but back then this one didn't, so could it be a delayed reaction?
Now it's been dry again for a couple weeks
Never watered, but neither in the last 10+ years, so I don't know if it's actually drought-related or could it be a fungus/virus/whatever instead?

that looks like it's infected tissue. The leaves aren't like the natural brown dead color, which is worrying. Thirsty plants exhibit, for the most part, the same symptoms. Curled leaves, dropping growth, stunted growth. I don't know a whole lot about trees, but regardless, I would bet money that you've got a sick tree

Damn, that'd suck. So I can only hope it won't infect the nearby B. pendula as well as the somewhat closely related hazelnut then
Got already a very fucked up (moth) box tree hedge there, plus a huge broad willow died last year as well as almost half of a 20m long privet hedge, if all those die too it'd remove the visual cover to the street completely

'Divide' is a word very rarely used in a Nepenthes context, keep in mind their roots are pretty fragile and not like Sarras etc. I'm not sure how commercial x "Miranda" are sold, if it's 2 different plants simply untangle the roots carefully, if the other plants in the pot are basal shoots then you'll have to cut them off where they sprout out, and treat them as cuttings.

Meh, I'm already dumping dozens of litres on my crops everyday, don't wanna waste even more on water guzzlers, so succulents and Mediterraneans are best for the ornamental garden
As a bonus most are evergreen too, so it doesn't look like a grey/brown dead wasteland in winter.
Still even they need too much water for my liking lately, it's been dry for only a couple weeks and part of a fucking rosemary hedge I planted over a year ago fell dry just because I watered it a bit too late, you'd think they'd have developed long enough roots now but no

Also good time to present the current small "raised front garden" (street side, just about 10 m^2 or so) I'm re-styling to mostly evergreen
>1 Buxus sempervirens
Has been sitting there for around 30 years AFAIK, around 4m long 1m broad and up to 2.50m tall. Came under attack of the box tree moth last month. Sprayed Acetamiprid twice so far, seems to have stopped it
>2 Prunus laurocerasus
Very old too and once covered the whole spot and was heavily pruned back a few years ago, trying to get one into tree form plus leaving one as shrub but keeping it small
>3 Ligustrum vulgare
Sitting there since forever too, unfortunately not an evergreen variety
>4 Nerium oleander
Started from a small cutting in April and doesn't do much (probably too shady), ever since I read they like it rather moist and watering it daily, it's speeding up though
(tbc...)
>>
>>2217967
(cont...)
>5 Thuja spec.
Sitting there a few years, quite undemanding in everything, just slowly grows
>6 Rosmarinus officinalis
3 biggest I bought and planted last year, the others are from cuttings I made last September
>7 Euonymus japonicus
Bought in April, grows very slowly as they do
>8 Lavandula stoechas
Bought in April, flowered from then until August (constantly removed wilted flowers), hard pruned a couple weeks ago so it stays bushy
>9 Mahonia aquifolium (barely visible)
Dug up as a volunteer from the fields in May and heavily pruned, growing well since then
>10 Trachycarpus fortunei
Bought last July, growing slowly, needs loads of water though
>11 Yucca gloriosa
Bought yesterday, I like how it looks, let's see how it fares
>12 Fatsia japonica
Bought yesterday, came in a way too small pot, some leaves are still drooping down, will probably take some time to root in. Not pruning yet but will if it doesn't improve after a couple weeks

it's impressive you manage to remember the names of all your plants! I don't keep any ornamentals besides an ivy I found by the dumpster, my tanks eat up enough of my budget. I'm going to get some indoor plants soon but worried my cats will eat them.

if you think ornamentals are water guzzlers, don't do a veggie garden. I have one in a diy earthbox I made, it has a resevoir that holds ~10 gallons of water that I have to refill every 3 days. and that's with heavy PNW rain.

>>2217963
here's a dutch style planted tank, very tidy aesthetics. such a shame that you have such low biodiversity there.
>>
>>2217971
well, your Buxus sempervirens for example, it looks outgrown and unmaintained to me, they're pretty much always pruned into shape here.

>Prunus laurocerasus
>Very old too

why is it so small? these plants are huge hedges here within a few years.

>Ligustrum vulgare
>Sitting there since forever too

again it's small as fuck, I don't understand, they make 6+ feet hedges here within 2 years.
>>
>>2217978
our biodiversity is pretty big, most of it isn't available on the marked because it's invasive as fuck.

keep in mind we've barely got flowing water and ditches everywhere, the only plants that survive in them are so hardy they'll outgrow a tank within a month.
>>
>>2217986
also most of them are too big for aquariums.

Best I could find, here a pic from early February (so middle of winter where it generally doesn't look nice as new light green shoots are missing still), before it was screwed
As for the Prunus, like I said it once was a gigantic shrub covering the whole space so it was hard pruned to almost the base of the stem, to make space again
>>
>>2217991
most aquatic plants aren't suitable for aquariums, that's why they're all imported from south america and other places. there's only a few dozen popular plants in the hobby.
>>
>>2217981
And for the privet hedge, it's generally kept a round 2-2.50m height so you can still reach the top without a ladder when pruning, thing is about 25m long (extends to the "inside" garden)
>>
>>2217992
watch out for Cylindrocladium buxicola, it's killing pretty much every Buxus in west Europe right now, it's possible to treat it but it's extremely expensive and not really worth it.

if you trim buxus back to the stump it'll regrow.

once ( it's not an if anymore) your buxus dies replace it with Osmanthus since it's not affected by that virus, and looks about the same.

Neighbours to which the hedge borders are very chill (distant relatives), so that ain't an issue. >>
>>2218013
>Eucalyptus gunni
you can't force a tree to be a hedge in the long run, it'll just end up growing to the point where you have to prune it 3 times a year.

do you live in a area that isn't windy at all? I can't imagine that hedge surviving longer than a year, they're usually blown to shit here.

Maybve it comes from other infected shrubs in the neighbourhood and tries to re-infect mine

Hi /an/, blow in from /n/ here.

I planted some chilli seeds in a bed of soil and this came up, I'm reasonably sure it isn't a chilli but I have no idea what it actually is.

It's covered in aphids or some other little bug but I haven't bothered dealing with them because I'm not sure this is anything I care about and it's apparently keeping them off my tomatoes. It's also covered in ants but they don't seem to actually do anything, just explore it.

My questions are:
What is this plant? Is it good for anything?
What are the ants actually doing? Gathering pollen and dew?

Thanks a lot, anon!

I had a feeling that it might be a nightshade of some sort but it's been years since I grew belladonna and the flowers are totally different.

Guess it's good for nothing except maybe keeping the aphids off the tomatoes.
>>
>>2218514
The European one, S. nigrum proper, is perfectly edible when fully ripe (yeah unripe ones and leaves have solanine but so do tomatoes), but I'm not sure about the others such as S. americanum, so proceed at own risk

>before the fruit is ripe

Also both flower and fruit simultaneously most of the time anyway, so at that stage there's usually the next set of flowers already there
As for the toxicity of the ripe(!) bittersweet, this one is debated too
For example http://www.giftpflanzen.com/solanum_dulcamara.html claims that the ripe fruit is basically alkaloid-free and that mostly older literature exaggerated the toxicity, as well as those who did sloppy research and just copied those old data over
Didn't get to try these myself though as none I know of grows in the closer area (as opposed to nigrum which is everywhere)

Turns out that what was killing my giant flytraps was not the adaptation or direct sunlight, but the pine needles I used as a sphagnum replacement. I had to remove all the substrate, clean what was left of their rhizomes and roots and I put them under a shade cloth to make them and the new moss recover ASAP. I think the B52 is kill anyway...
God I've been in this hobby for 5 years and I fucked it up hard.

Question for flytrap growers, have you noticed that under intense sunlight they lose the red in their traps and turn mostly green? Kept under a light shade they develop their better colors in my experience.

Weird, thought it's the other way around (sun causing reddening), but I only had a cheap flytrap from hardware store last year that died for some reason. I do know it's the case for my lemons though, when outside, young leaves are red, but inside (over winter) they start off green, so that red stuff seems to be some UV protection pigment

I thought the same but my plants always have nicer colors in May than in August. And a friend that grows them with filtered sunlight keeps them with vivid colors all year round.

Btw looking back at this pic I noticed how much have they grown this year.

Keep in mind solar maximum is around June 20, so August has already less intense sun than May, and right now we are at mid- to late March levels again

That some faux-70s instagram etc. filter (not using such services myself so wouldn't know how much you can do with them) or are you actually digitising film? (I'm doing the latter too but only with old film from family cameras)
But when I do so, I always try to make the colours look as if the pic came out of a modern digital cam, with limited success I'd say (always so many fucking oversaturated reds to deal with)
They didn't bother photographing plants a lot (film was expensive yo), so have this kot instead

Hello /plant/

My chamaedorea is feeling unwell. It has random dark brown spots and burned tips.
I repotted it once and it helped a lot but then it came back and I've heard that repotting is stressful for this plant as it has weak roots.

Any ideas on how to clean it? If I have to repot again, what should I make sure to do right so it doesn't happen again?

Nepenthes, especially hybrids
If you have a desklamp, a spray bottle and some distilled water, you can grow a small hybrid nepenthes. Dracaena and Anthirium are also great choices, as are lithops

I'm an starting horticulture student and we have lots of unique plants that 2nd year students grew. There's this one plant that someone grew that looks a lot like weed. I feel like that's the only reason why it was grown. Regardless, I would like to grow it in my own garden so I collected seeds off of it.

Does anybody know what it is? I took a picture of a sign thinking it was the plant's but it totally isn't. Just ignore the sign and look at the plant behind it.

I would go check it out myself at school but I have been super sick for the last 4 days.

Newb here, I just slapped this elephant ear terrarium together this morning
any suggestions how to spruce it up?
>>
>>2230121
undergrowth, obviously.

you'll want some nice creeping plants, some rough looking rocks and some moss.

also order tropical woodlice, they're the tiny white ones.
>>
Thanks for the response, i have some vinca vine but it didnt look very good. It's probably too wet for a pothos plant to thrive, would you think so? I'd also like to add a small nepenthes.
what are tropical woodlice?

no, pothos are a shitty weed that'll thrive regardless of the conditions.

some people throw them in their aquariums for fun, pothos don't give a shit.

>I'd also like to add a small nepenthes.

nepenthes are vines, that's not going to work as you don't have the space for it, you'll want to look for low light groundcover.

>what are tropical woodlice?

trichorhina tomentosa

they'll be your clean-up crew.

>pothos don't give a shit.
I should have known this
What If the nepenthes were a very small one boosted on a rock? The one hanging in my window looks like it would work if it were smaller.
Woodlice look boss, Im using a home made bio active soil currently so they'll make a great addition
Can I just use ones from outside or are tropic necessary?
>>
>>2230162
most species need a lot of light, so terrariums aren't bright enough for them.

>Can I just use ones from outside or are tropic necessary?

you can, but watch out for iridovirus.

you might as well add some worms to it while you're at it.
>>
>>2230173
good point, I'm only rocking 15 watts or so of 6500k
I have plenty of worms in my compost bin so that's great
are there any plant species you'd recommend as undergrowth or anything else?
>>
>>2230183
just toss Helxine in it if you're lazy.

also known as baby's tears.
>>
>>2230191
>baby's tears
perfect, thank you so much
>>
>>2230196
look into cloud forest orchids, once you're more experienced with terrariums you'll want to ditch that fake background and make your own from cork bark and rocks.
>>
>>2230204
thats what I hope to do, but Itll do for now
>>

>lytraps are starting to become noticeably smaller and less responsive
why is this?
>>
>>2229870
It was indeed C. selloana, but the pic was from early February, in the meantime it has been replanted elsewhere because the area was too clogged

hope you didn't prune it early this year.

-7C and it's a goner.
>>
>>2230222
Because it's fall, ya dingus. Though it's still 80+ every day here, hopefully it'll start cooling down for us soon.
>>
>>2230222
They go dormant in winter
>>
>>2230242
oh I thought in general the species was collectively failing lmfao

Pruned it in late January (got too big and overshadowed too much the adjacent Laurus nobilis and Pinus mugo), after that we hadn't had below -2 yet, Then replanted it to a different place a few months later
Also got 2 more C. selloana in the garden (pic one of them), I think that one even since before the 2012 cold wave (-16°C hoarfrost, no protecting snow cover) which it survived untouched easily.
They usually get pruned late February to March though

update
>>
>>2230221
Also look into Xaxim plates. Expensive as fuck, only works in really high humidity and takes a long time but really worth it.
>>
>>2230260
they can survive -20C+ as long as you don't prune them until their growing season starts again.

we've got night frost until april here.
>>
>>2230298
Yeah it can freeze until late April here too, but by then it's like -1 in the worst cases
Just this year I cut them in late Feb (it was still completely green with the flower stalks looking the same as in autumn, as is always the case, never seen it brown), then we had -2 again once in March, didn't really bother them
>>
>>2230298
Frost already? Christ that's early

New thread lads, hope it's up to standards

I try my best not to be a douchedick but sometimes, stupidity can be too great
Don't worry about plants dying on you, I've lost easy to grow plants too. Kitchen windows aren't the best places to grow plants, if you want to start, try with some outdoor plants. Something like daffodils are easy and very rewarding

as long as it doesn't get below -7 you're safe.

january and february are the coldest months here so I don't prune them until late april.
>>2230312
the frost hasn't started yet, but once it does it'll last until april, atleast it's supposed to but the past 10 years have been a retarded rollercoaster.

last year it didn't get cold until way past christmas, it's been 6 years since we've had stable ice or snow.

picture related, that's all we had last winter.
