The characters are next-level bad for the series. Literally copy/pasta quality. The main character can be effectively condensed into "Pity Me" bait.

Even worse is that the terrible character that nobody likes, aka the Mary Sue that is "Shirou", has returned in a horrible way. I can only imagine the franchise's creator desperately trying to make Shirou a likable character by following the worst examples.

Every other "Fate" anime has done what this does, except better. The biggest difference is that the other shows had other things that made them entertaining:

-The Original Fate/Stay Night was flat bad outside of the interesting premise. Killing one target many times times in 1 slashing attack still causes post-traumatic-stress-disorder flashbacks.

-The Unlimited Bladeworks remake had the production value. But I suppose it also setup Shirou to become an edgelord like Kirito... except with terrible justification and logic behind it rather than just being an edgy twat.

-Fate/Zero was a mature show in most aspects, focusing around psychological aspects and a cast of mostly adults. This was also probably the best series for character development since it never really "felt" like there was a specific main character and frequently followed different people to get different perspectives. It also wasn't "waifu/best girl" baiting with teenagers having borderline romantic relationships with the souls of ancient heroes that have been warped, rewritten, and/or genderbent.

Somewhere along the line, Fate turned into Nasu's exploration of the naive ideal that constitutes a "hero" that is F/SN, and by extension F/Z, to focusing solely on the framing device of the series, whilst ignoring the core theme that made it so strong in the first place.

Fate is not a story about the Holy Grail War. It's a story about what being a "hero" gets you. It's about what it takes to be a hero, it's about what being a hero means to the characters. It's about how being a hero might not be that good an ideal after all. and it's also about accepting that fact. Whether or not you want to ignore it and soldier on, accept it, but strive for it anyways,or undestand that it is an impossible thing to strive to, and focus on people you care about instead.
