So, good timing anon.

I recently expanded my anime VHS collection. I bought an old tube CRT tv, and finally got a working VCR today, so I'm about to watching some Black Magic M-66 tonight. I could post up my collection for recommendations on what to watch next?

I miss old anime. Everything was hand drawn and had a gritty, yet colorful look. You could tell time and effort were really put into 80's/90's anime films, especially.
>>
I marathoned pic related, and then went onto reading the entire manga in one sitting.

For some reason it reminded me a lot of eva, even though it's very pre-eva. Especially this particular episode in the OVA.
>>
I've seen 7 episodes of Turn A Gundam over the past two days, now at episode 40. It is pretty exciting, and I like that we finally got to see the moon.
>>
>>160734348
I really liked the Please Save My Earth OVA, wish they'd do a full adaptation. The OVA showed a lot of potential.

Hmmm, well if you ever decide to pick it up, the OVA kind of adapts parts of the manga out of order, but I'd say volume 3 is where new stuff begins to happen.

Started Astro Boy manga. Finished Vol.1, surprisingly good right now, kinda fucked up 1st story arc with dogs being surgically modified into soldiers.

Finished Mazinger Z manga. It's really dumb and cheesy but I kinda enjoyed how campy and ridiculous it was. Weird how it randomly switched in and out of "Monster-of-the-Week" type shit.

Just started the granddaddy of samurai anime. Despite the limited animation, it's quite stylish. Not stylish in a trippy Belladonna-style way, but almost like a gekiga. Strange considering the manga was fairly conventional-looking.
>>
Is it autism?
>>
>>160736340
I'll have to pick up some of the original series then, as these are just random volumes of the 2nd and 3rd series.

I remember watching parts of it as a kid though, so I definitely do want to finish it.

Also, apparently seeing what people think would be good to watch out of my collection is bannable. Neat.

My suggestion is Princess Nine.
>>
>>160737776
That's not the point though. I wasnt asking to know what I should watch for random recommendations.

I posted a picture of my specific collection, and asked what anons would recommend, based upon my personal collection, as I was going through it.

Maybe I'm in the wrong, but I feel that's a far cry from "lurk moar"

I couldn't see your picture, it has been deleted. But that sounds like it could be a more meaningful request than just random things.

I'm still working through Maison Ikkoku. I ragequit every two to three episodes so it's taking me a while to finish.

I've been padding it out with Slayers, though. Just finished rewatching Next.

Maybe someone reported you because of how you phrased it. I have seen people post pictures of their collection before and ask for suggestions without rubbing anyone the wrong way. You just have to avoid using the "recommendations" word.

Slayers is great and worth rewatching from the beginning.
>>
>>160737959
I mean, I didn't think it was unreasonable, as it's a small collection. I more so just wanted an idea of what of this was worth watching, anyway. Big War looks pretty cool, but the Iczer series looks like it'd be fun, and almost gives me Tenchi Muyo vibes from the art.
>>
>>160738195
I haven't seen much anime, but Lodoss War is good if it's the TV version.
You probably know that GitS and Wings of Honneamise are considered masterpieces already although I personally wouldn't put them on any favourites list.

I watched Lodoss as a kid, so I'd be excited to see how it stands up.

GitS obviously, but I haven't seen Wings yet. In fact, the first time I've ever heard of it was when I picked it up. I might throw that one on next.

Thanks! I'm hoping to pick up some more tapes to add to the collection soon. History of Trunks (edited version) came just as the tape, so it seems almost sad to put it in with the rest of them.

Imagawa loves doing this. It wasn't so pronounced in the three episodes of Getter armageddon he did IIRC but guaranteed it would have been a thing if he'd been kept on the project.

Sensui fight itself was kind of a let down (especially with the O MY DEMON ANCESTRY shit and basically everything after they go through the portal) but the rest of Chapter Black was pretty good I thought.
Three Kings also had a pretty good lead-up even without Kuwabara, but once the tournament starts proper it stumbles pretty hard. The final episode is still GOAT though.

When events in a story are (unnecessarily) dragged out. I've mostly seen the expression used in western comics, in comparison to the eventful golden/silver age comics where you could do an entire story arc in one issue and now a proper arc takes 6 at minimum.
Slam Dunk is vulnerable to a similar effect because it's still a sports manga, and a lot of the fun stuff in those happens by stretching out seconds of play into a deep analysis of the situation and motivations involved.
There's actually very few games represented in Slam Dunk, too. Still my uncontested number 1 favorite sports manga.

That aside, most Astro stories have no real continuity between them. So it's not that big of an issue that characters pop in or out. Uran is just Uran, Cobalt is just... there.

Yeah, Uran and Cobalt's sudden appearance, as well as those of Astro's parents, were the ones that left me kinda confused in the most recent arc i've been reading since they had no introduction. I assume that with them, Ochanomizu, Tenma, and Mustachio, i've probably met most of the recurring cast by now.

> The "chronological version" was just taken from the english volumes by a kind anon. I can't find them anymore but I still have them in some USB stick somewhere.

Hmm, well, the volumes give approximate dates for when each story was originally published so it shouldn't be too hard to one day go back and reread it in that format either.
>>
>>160762040
No, the bitch getting balls on her face is Yu (Mila) from Attacker You
>>
>>160764178
Cobalt sort of has an origin story but he loses all relevance after that.
Uran has a couple stories where she's more relevant.
Astro's parents were literally built for the job. they're designed to love him. They're also younger than he is, which is pretty interesting in a naive and yet still fucked up way.

And yeah, that's the essential Astro cast. Well, adding the usual Star System villains like Kim Sankaku, Skunk, Hamegg and Acetylene Lamp.

Finished Turn A Gundam and started watching Joe. Joe is fucking awesome so far but not too dated for me to enjoy. I honestly think every action Joe is making that seems "rebellious" or being a delinquent is pretty justified giving his circumstances.

Did Danpei legit care about Joe at the start or did he only stick with him to pull him out of poverty? Seems like he genuinely cared about him when he got carted off to prison but the whole show reminds me of a Dickens or a Victor Hugo novel.

Perfect.
Some people don't want to admit it, but anime produced during the 60s, 70s and early 80s were the best. They were more mainstream and family orienty, so you had a way bigger variety of stories and art styles. I'm not saying today there are not good anime, but most of them are otaku-oriented late night shows and there's less variety.

Inspiration is different from plagiarism. Giatrus is way different from The Flintstones, both for art style and content. Giatrus was very politically scorrect, while The Flinstones is way more family friendly. Plus both Giatrus and The Flinstones are from the 60s, it's not even so sure Sonoyama was inspired by The Flinstones, they are temporally too much close.

From Wikipedia

Giatrus (Japanese: ギャートルズ Hepburn: Gyātoruzu) is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Shunji Sonoyama. It spawned two other manga, two anime television series, a television drama, and an anime film. The first TV series mark the debut of Joe Hisaishi, composer of My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away. The official English title is Gon, The Stone-Age Boy.[1]

So it apparently had also an English version, even so they changed the title, making Gon the protaginyts rather than Giatrus (what the fuck, America). Another confirmation of Greoning's plagiarism.
Anyway, Giatrus >>> Homer. Especially his amazing burps.

Basically after one volume of all the lewd hi-jinks you came to know in the OVA series, it went a completely different direction from there on. And shit gets weird as the author spreads anti-establishment and leftist ideologies in storylines like an oblivious dike going down on a cross-dressed Kintaro and thinks his dick is a "giant clitoris", for example. And there's also the brain-washing cult that spans throughout the manga trying to take over the world through S&M and virtual reality. And even after all that, the manga stopped. Not even a rushed ending, it just fucking stopped at some weird point where he was mid-virtual reality

This review is more informative, but don't take its praise of it, it's still shit

Yeah, that's the thing. If it'd stayed a fun adventure I think it wouldn't have dragged so hard in the middle. When it became your bog-standard Tomino war drama, it lost almost all of its steam. It picked back up towards the end but by that point you just want it to be over. I get that as a TV manga it had to fill the episodes with something, but something interesting really needed to happen around the middle. I'm glad I watched it before reading FSS though, made it that much more enjoyable to look at the similarities and references.
And yes, Xabungle is tons of fun start to finish.

He has lots of solid ideas and can carry a work on a thematic level but his storytelling structures and visual sense are stuck in 70s which becomes more and more apparent with each new show he directs. I don't mind, it's honestly fascinating to see something in 2014 which on a staging and structural level screams "70s anime" so much as G-reco for instance but on the other hand I don't hold it against people if they cannot overcome that barrier. Visual presentation and storytelling evolved in the past decades, Tomino has not. But as I said, I kind of like that.

For me I don't even feel that it's a "70s anime" feel. Having seen a fair bit of 70s anime recently, and then trying and failing to get into things like Xabungle and Dunbine, for me it's just that his characters all talk and act like fucking aliens or something. Complete dead pan spewing of techno babble interspersed with autistic screeching and awkward laughter. Stuff like Joe, Lupin and Heidi come off exceptionally more natural, despite being even older than Tomino's major works.

I'm looking to watch an anime that is both smart/has a good story or characters and has some great action in it. I don't care if it is new or not.

I recently picked up Gundam 0083 and 08th MS Team on Blu-ray, so I've been watching those. 0083 I'd seen before, and it was every bit as good as I remember. 08th MS Team I hadn't seen before, but I'm really enjoying it. The two series are good examples of how great anime was back in the day - at least when they put in a decent effort.

I'm not sure which Gundam series I'll move onto next as I'm pretty much done with UC sans Victory. I've avoided the latter because I loved F91 and am afraid anything else from Late UC will strike me with disdain.

He has a distinctive style of his own that goes beyond "70s anime". His style has solidified with his "Happy Tomino" era and it's a distillation of his previous works. "Happy Tomino" is "Pure Tomino". It has nothing to do with the 70's or with any other period of animation. Tomino was ever interested in the technique only to the extent that it let him express his unique view of reality. He is a very idiosyncratic director.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0Q0JohCvrk

Tomino overreaches too harshly into his little world instead of letting characters naturally work things out as they would, he plays too fast and hard with characters often at times for the sake of drama. He doesn't do it TOO atrociously though, I guess. (Fuck you Yamato movies)

I too fell for the /m/ meme lads.

Are any of Ryosuke's Takahashi's other anime as good as the 2nd arc of Votoms or the last third of Dougram? I've been thinking on Layzner, Gasaraki, Blue Gender, Dunbine but didn't get hooked on their first few episodes

Does Giant Gorg ever get compelling beyond "campy but dumb 80s action show that barely has a plot"?

Is it just me or is the drama in Zeta Gundam completely fucking retarded? Is Ideon better than this?

After killing off all the adults in the first few episodes, does Vifam actually become anything more than a Gundam clone but with little kids who have plot armor?

Is Heavy Metal L-Gaim similar to Xabungle? Can anyone who loved Xabungle like I did recommend a similar show that isn't King Gainer?

Pretty great stuff, the first movie is pretty camp but the ending gives a resounding sense of D's journey with him just moving along set to that nice music, he really is an endless warrior.

He's incredibly powerful too and I'm surprised most people ever cared about Alucard for hax abilities when he can outcut Shiki with just pure skill alone.

Anime is still a medium that has a huge variety of stories, of course, specially if compared to Western animation. But during the 60s, 70s and 80s, I think the variety was also bigger.
For example, today kid shows are basically and mainly retarded stuff like Pokemon or Yokai Watch, while also kid anime were very complex plotwise, during those years.

Even though I watched tons of dubbed anime during my childhood (you know, internet it didn't exist during the 80s), today I prefer to watch anime in Japanese. I'm not saying Italian dub was nice or something.

>>160806480
So far, the only anime that I simply cannot watch in Japanese is Dragon Ball.
I have trouble listening to small Goku in any language but German, even though the dub is really bad.
Nostalgia doesn't make much sense because I can watch Dragon Ball Z just fine in Japanese.
Though, I still watch it with English subs to laugh at how badly translated some stuff is (pic unrelated).
>>
>>160806603
It's ok, I dunno why it's upscaled though.
>>
I've been watching Gundam X recently. About a third of the way through, and while it's not a bad show, the mech designs (aside from the GX) remind me so much of Transformers, especially the Airmaster. The character designs as a whole aren't that great either. Other than Ennil El and some of the bridge bunnies, there's nothing about them that really stnads out.

Clear PTSD, to me. While he's doing awesome things without an expression on his face you can still remember he's essentially broken and can hardly communicate with other people. Those moments when he almost, ALMOST enjoys himself with his crew are truly sweet.

There's also something charmingly pathetic about a man who falls in love with a gun because he thinks he himself is one.
>>
>>160811106
Part of the reason why Chirico is so good is because of how his supporting crew play off of him and enhance his character, so many of the parts that are memorable about him to me are him interacting with his supporting cast.

I finished Nausicaa, the manga version. I really liked it but it drags at the end IMO.
Also Nausicaa stops being a character after some time and becomes a Jesus expy for most of the story, what's up with that? I liked the rest of characters especially Kurotowa and Kushana, however they dissapear at the last arc and just come back to the ending.
Also wha'ts with the story, it keeps getting cynical as it goes and while i liked the end i can't help but feel the author planed for a little more but got tired and decided to end it there.
>>
>>160815652

I felt it was just inevitable considering the changings Nausicaa underwent to and the experiences she had.

The opening and manga have her as blonde, but they changed it last minute because they thought Japanese girls would relate better with the shorter brown hair.
>>
>>160822471
Amusing.
Reminds me of the red-haired/black-haired female Ranma distinction, where manga/Rumiko eventually took over the red hair. Or do I misremember it and was pig-tailed girl always red hair on the color covers?
>>
>>
>>160822471
Oh, i though she was gonna use a wig at some point or something like that.
But i think her anime desing is cuter (though i like brown hair a lot more than blonde hair).
>>160822551
IIRC female Ranma being a redhead was the anime staff decision. Rumiko just rolled with it at the end.
>>
>>160823479
Ironically, I think the black hair might have suited the manga version better. In the end though, you don't read it for looks as much as for the great comedy.

I liked the TV version way more than the OVA as well, I found the OVA just a boring slog with a dull cast and even more dull plot.

The TV version ended up having a much more engaging cast on Spark's side who all bounce off each other much better than Parn's OVA party who barely interact with each other, Ashram became a very charismatic villain, Spark was a much better protagonist than I was expecting, and in general they were doing more interesting things.

I didn't mind the trade-off in art quality because even if the TV series looked worse, it had better action and was actually animated more often than the OVA was.

The thing with Lodoss OVA is that it's based on the first novel which is a novelized transcript of an actual D&D session played with the very first set of rules. That's why it's such a "by-the-book" fantasy. Today it's more fascinating as a piece which helped shaping Japanese awareness of high fantasy than as an actual story.
