Well, my point in my original post was I think it would be better if they did use native American folklore. There's plenty of it. Folkloric Shinigami suddenly being real in industrialized Japan is roughly similar to some kind of Native American deity becoming relevant in industrialized America. The original Death Note could have used the Grim Reaper too, after all, but it went for something more specific and culturally relevant.

I think Shinigami and the isolationist student culture are the two main issues of cultural relevance in Death Note where it actually matters that it happens in Japan.

Only thing that worries me is if they try to play the story as Light being some nerd who falls down the wrong path or the book is controlling his actions instead of him being an overconfident asshole that is very popular and confidently thinks he should be a God.

As long as they don't try to make Light look like a troubled teen, it's cool. And the race stuff honestly doesn't really matter. It's a work of fiction and we already have live action Asian Deathnote, so why not mix it up, I guess. Production looks like it could be pretty quality, and the implication of Light doing a cleansing in America on American prisoners, given our established prison complex will probably spark controversy in the coming months, so I got my popcorn ready.

Tl;dr- looks interesting. Not going in expecting a miracle, at most something I can watch through on a Saturday afternoon and drink some beers.

Yeah, the reason Light made sense has a lot to do with the actual context. Because he's an Honour student who spends all his time preparing for exams, he was able to get away with behaving mysteriously and able to hide things from his parents. It's more of a story about what's possible when a person lives in that kind of isolation mixed with having that level of arrogance.

Early on one of the best lines in Death Note is when Light is saying he'll rid the world of bad people and Ryuk offhandedly says "then I guess you'll be the only one left."
