That's right, friend. T'was the unseen Hand of Fate, just like some of the other Cures. Some Cures were chosen for their Inner Potential™ and absolute Purity of Heart™, which I'm more tired of seeing.

I would welcome the next season showing that the girls were selected randomly and they have to do the job whether they like it or not, whether they want to or not.
Or the girls being selected by the very previous Cures themselves just as they are defeated in front of the girls who would become the season's stars.

There's never been an actual explanation, but the closest thing I can think of to plausible is that Mofurun is Mirai's channel, without whom she can't do any magic at all. It kind of seems cheap and unfair if Riko doesn't need anything like that, but she's from the mundane world after all.

It makes me sad that Riko and Mofurun never really had a relationship at all.

I'm sure we could look deeper into their personalities to show us why they'd make good Precures. Mirai seems genuinely interested not only in magic and the magic world, but showing her own side of the world to Riko. She seems to understand the importance of everyone getting along in new environments while also displaying interest in them, sort of like a mediator. Riko is abundantly curious, she want to know everything there is in both her magic studies and the normal world's. She seems to place importance on the knowledge she can gain in both worlds and combine it in so that they compliment each other, as if her role would be to introduce concepts that would be familiar to magic and normal world people. When? In cinderella episode Mirai/Riko/Haa didn't show any interest in him aside from being surprised to see him as a prince. Only Mofu is interest in him due to the storybook demand and the villain trio (who aren't even the real one, just imaginary).

They go out of their way to kill any mentor/Cure ship in Maho though, as he was revealed to be 1.actually an old grandpa 2. All-but-stated to be in love with his male ex-best friend

Probably first Liz episode. It gave pretty good insight on Riko 's character, driving force, shame etc.
Also early Haa episodes, like the one she ran away from home. It really point out how the cures form a small family unit of mom/dad/daughter, one of the more notable thing Maho have to stand out from other season.
Maho boss fights however are some what a lackluster most of the time. Even in its most climatic fight it isn't as intense as most other season like Yes5, Fresh, Suite(end-game), HC, Smile, Gopri or even SS.

It has made Maho go from bad to average for me, if only they did as much interesting things during the whole season.

To be fair, today's episode would have been the perfect way to end the series, and I feel that next week's episode is likely going to cheapen it somewhat (which seems kinda fitting given Maho)

It's really sad in a way as well, considering that they show Mirai in what looks to be university, that means that at least 4 years pass between the events of the series and the epilogue. They tried their damnedest to make it seem those four years believing she'd never see her friends (or Mofurun not inanimate) again really hurt.

They will most certainly cheapen all the drama that happened in this episode in the next one by having some ass pull, possibly in the last few minutes of the show. I guarantee it.

In your situation t's probably easier to write off her character and just enjoy her fight scenes separately. MIRAI is a creative, impulsive and inquisitive normal (stay with me) human with a overactive imagination. She doesn't concentrate well at school and is generally seen as a weird airhead for carrying her teddy bear with her everywhere. Some teachers have caught on to her barely-tapped creativity in writing and the arts, but she occasionally gets discouraged with feeling misunderstood and left out for her eccentricity. Her wild imagination will make her a prodigious at magic, to her delight (and someone's dismay), but will grow enormously from the discipline and thoughtfulness that Riko will teach her. Grandma will learn late in the year that Mirai is Precure (having played a little dumb to her trips to the Magical World) and support her in private leading up to the finale stretch.

RIKO is a studious, obedient and analytical Magical [world] girl with a giant chip on her shoulder. She studies well, memorizing entire books, strategizing and planning well, but struggles in Magical school because of her hesitant and overthinking ways. Her parents care for her but are distant in their own ways: dad is obsessed with his work and emotionally stunted, mom is incredibly successful and overly doting without listening to her daughter's concerns. Since starting at the school, she has been watched over carefully by the Principal (at her dad's secret request), and she has occasionally confided in and been advised him, not helping her reputation as an oddball. She will come to appreciate how much he has supported her in her parents' absence, especially as he guides her as a Precure. Mirai's curious and impulsive approach will teach her to have more confidence in her instincts, the missing piece to her growth in magic.

They'll always be better together, better for what they've learned from one another, and will deeply love one another for the amazing things that they overcame together. Only to be torn apart in Episode 49. Then brought back together.
