Parenthesis yeah, but they're made up. Not taken from the anime.

From the anime all we have are A-Z and also the period is just a normal dot.

Notice there are 2 fonts in the OP. One is just the actual canon stuff, and the second font has some made up extra punctuation like parenthesis, commas, exclamation point, question mark, etc..

Why'd they make a coherent alphabet and translate actual text if it wasn't important. They could get away with gibberish if they didn't care.
Tattun confirmed on twitter that there are a bunch of texts they had to translate using this code. Also Trigger is withholding the cheat sheet until the end of the show so it must be important enough.

GUYS
What if the moon cycle corresponds to some actual moon phases.

I'm trying to look it up but it's hard to understand. I wonder if there's some actual year/month or whatever that has this particular moon cycle
>>
>>152418630
There's no waxing or waning tho
>>
>>152418452
As they pointed out, it was probably easier for us because the English speakers already easily think in A-Z and a Latin-similar consonant-vowel relationship, in addition to some people who had a basic knowledge of Latin itself which made guessing "NON" etc much simpler. If they corresponded to kana and wrote out a relatively familiar Japanese phrase the Japs may well have beaten us to it, although many on /a/ are of course also familiar with kana.

>>
>>152418630
As somebody at the end of the last thread mentioned, there's no waxing half-moon. You'd have to either draw extremely arbitrary lines of where the "full" symbol starts and the "waxing crescent" symbol ends, which ought to give a noticeable effect on the frequency of those symbols in the pattern, or assume that the half-moon counts for both waxing and waning, which would probably fuck up the whole thing. Regardless of your resolution plan, wherever you draw the lines is going to determine how easy it is to find a match, coincidental or real.

>>
>>152418754

>>
>>152418767
I think the determining factor is that we're sitting here discussing Jap TV and a lot of people could easily go through all the hiragana/katakana symbols by rote, while the Japs are discussing Jap TV and may or may not know or care much about English/Latin.

AMA's are not for 4chan, it will only invite more problems, the platform isn't designed for it. Turns threads into utter shitfests of spam. You really want to start going down the rabbit hole of inviting PR departments and changing the core idea of anonymous posting? Threads with moot were bad enough.

So you want to turn /a/ or 4chan into a forum platform? Heavily moderated sessions 'for a select few' interviewees? I just don't want it to become such a common thing, as it could have other implications of how japmoot runs things (changes to policy). The sites already filled with PR, shillings and market research, I just don't want things to change any more than they have over the years to accommodate external pressures. The general sycophantic behaviour when we have those interviews can also be really abhorrent.

tl;dr I hate change and ass kissing 'important' people.

This isn't a "change", nor would it lead to a "heavily moderated platform". These things really aren't new and how the hell would they become a common thing?

>>
>>152434112
Why the fuck would it become a common thing? Both mamare and tattun literally appeared out of nowhere.
>>
>>152434268

Yes. For only LH author only, beyond that it's merely moot/japmoot/mod sucking up. I cannot remember or know of every single time it's happen or on every board. I knew of the deadmou5 of /mu/ but never browsed the board when it happened, same can be said of any others on other boards. What I'm getting at is setting a precedent. Yes they are rare and they need to be that way. But inviting the guy back, encouraging the use of a trip and then setting up the possibility of another trigger employee, just starts the run of other entities further down the line all starting to do AMA's. If this is what you want then so be it, but it's just not how I'd like to see PR/interview interactions on 4chan. I just don't think the way we tend to communicate fits with a proper interview scenario. Take the various times moot would post in a thread, it would divulge into a complete shitshow, with him attempting to answer some cherry picked questions among the sheer spam of a thread. If you start to heavily moderate AMA threads, that can extend further. Do you want more dick pic tweets and the like? Do you want vigorously controlled behaviors in AMAs? Or just want the moot level wash of spam and insults to be the mainstay content of the thread?

It's not that bad, it's just that the user input process is way too cumbersome. You could probably do it quicker just by looking at the cheat sheet.

I don't think there really is any elegant way for a user to input the runes on a computer.
Probably the best bet for a decoding program would be one which you can feed an image and it reads the symbols off the image, which would be way more complex.

Let's suppose we didn't know what each letter meant. We just assign them a latter from A to Z and write the whole text in cyphered form. Pic related.

Then you apply a dictionary from the suspected language and voilà:

People make constructed languages all the time; some even make them and open them up to be used by anyone. I feel it would be neat if an anime actually made use of a conlang, and actually make you faggots have to work to decipher shit.
>>
>>152443177
I can't imagine a studio putting in the effort to make a true conlang. They're hard work if you don't half ass it. It's pretty much reserved for linguistic geeks.
>>
>>152443313
Man, that would be neat as all hell.
>>
>>152443313
The only weeb media conlang I can think of is Hymnos. And they had a lot more time to make that, since that's from a video game.

Are there any others in weeb media?
>>
>>152443329
The Language Creation Society has a site where you can hire an interested conlanger.

http://jobs.conlang.org/submit-a-job-listing
A full language (orthography included) would be at least $600, which I don't think is much more than any other professional artist. So the studio can work on most of the show while the conlang is being made.
(Note, this is also the site GoT used to commission Dothraki.)
>>
>>152443660
Yeah they could. Or they can just do a substitution with some symbol set, which has about the same effect from a viewer perspective (arguably a better one if you consider accessibility) and costs about an hour's worth of time from some autist they already have on staff.

Even if someone did go through the effort, I think the audience would be more likely to suspect gibberish than conlang.

Ok here is the runes reader I mentioned earlier in the thread. Basically select an image with (clear) runes, and it will spit out the translation

I doubt I'll keep working on this, since getting it to work with screenshots is proving kinda hard
>>
>>152443779
I think the effort they put into the moon pattern kinda shows some work were put into it, so maybe they just suck at conlanging and did a half-assed job.
>>
>>152444589

>>
>>152444452
Can I please have the source code to this thing? I'm trying to code a language for Tesseract.
>>
>>152444817
That's true. But Latin is also their spell casting language; presumably they'd use the same for both. Besides, replace spoken with read and you get the same result.

Also I don't think you're going to fit enough of a language in a show to get a real translation going unless you're talking about 50+ episodes.
>>
>>152444876
I ain't too keen on OCR, but wouldn't it be sufficient to "simply remap" the glyph for the letters from the latin glyphs to the moonrunes?
>>
>>152444928
I'll use the Latin package as a baseline, but training Tesseract is a major ordeal, both manually and computationally. Any pre-existing work would be helpful.
>>
>>152443779
I mean, for some shows, the writing system being just a cipher makes sense. Take the literal moon runes in LWA; the story says they're meant to be a code to share between witches. Not necessarily another language.
The same could be argued for some other shows, but then it doesn't make sense for others, where their made up alphabet is meant for the residents of some other world, and explicitly speak not-Japanese.
>>
>>152445029
Sure looks like so.
Can't we just automatically generate training data (text and the associated screencaps) with —gasp— e.g. MS Word VBA?

>>152445042
I think a good analogy would be old alchemical manuscripts. They were usually written in the local language or Latin, and the symbols were just used to cloak important information.
>>
>>152444784
I wasn't implying it's good, in fact I was agreeing it sucks and is only a cypher, just pointing out they actually put some effort into it because the script rotation thing is quite intersting.
>>
>>152445237
The Tesseract training scripts for 4.0 only work on Linux. I would use Python or Perl for scripting. But generating the corpus isn't really the hard part.
>>
>>152445318
I don't think it sucks (unless you're using a full conlang as a basis for comparison, in which case I'd say your standards are too high). I'm just saying that while they put in effort, the level of effort required for this is a lot closer to "shifted every letter over one" than "made a legit conlang"
>>
>>152445441
So you're using a conlang as a basis for comparison at the same time you're saying my standards are too high for doing it?

The argument anon said was "It's easier to put some autist to scramble fonts and do it in 1 hour than pay 600 dollars".
I was just saying they must have spent a decent amount of time doing the script, so the argument of cutting corners isn't actually that valid.

>>
>>152445570
I think you're overestimating the amount of effort required for this. It's clever, certainly, but most of the concepts flow pretty naturally. You start with the luna theme and the use of Latin, so you decide to make a moon based substitution cypher. The most obvious visual element associated with that is phases. Phases are cyclical, so you decide to base your alphabet on a cyclical rotation of phases. You need 24 characters, which means the rotation needs to be 24 characters long (and then loop). You create an arbitrary sequence of phases. You decide how to many to show at a time - anything less than 6 means you can only use a circular rotation, which is a little too obvious, and odd numbers are harder to block off in a visual appealing way. So 6 is a pretty natural number of phases per character. A 2x3 rectangle is about letter sized. Etc, etc.

I've done stuff like that as /tg/ nerd, and I don't think it'd take even $300 worth of time. Especially considering how little people in the animu industry tend to make.
>>
What's the best way to learn moonrunes? The looping way or just try to memorize every letter
>>
>>152446475
Looking at the concept done it's easy to say it's obvious, but can we say the concept in itself is something you can just come up with randomly?

Unless they copied this scheme from somewhere else, case in which I drop my case.

Also, I'm starting a logographic language identical to Japanese in phonotatics but different in grammar, vocabulary and logograms, so yeah, I know this shit is not viable on a TV-schedule basis.

>Looking at the concept done it's easy to say it's obvious, but can we say the concept in itself is something you can just come up with randomly?
I've done similar things before for hobby stuff, as I said. Sure, I don't think i'd arrive at the exact same conclusion given the premise of "moon themed language" (I'd probably have ended up doing something more binary like because I'm that sort of autist), but I think I'd end up in the same ballpark. Or maybe not, creativity is funny like that.

>Unless they copied this scheme from somewhere else, case in which I drop my case.
Not that I know of, but I will say the association between moons and cycles is pretty well established, archetypal even. I don't think they copied anything, I just think many of the elements lead into other elements pretty directly.

None of this is to shit on their efforts, I'm just trying to point how huge the gap is between this and a conlang. I could make a reasonable effort at a moon alphabet substitution, but if you told me to come up with a moon themed language I'd scarcely know where to start. Maybe some sort of association between tense and phase? Shit is too hard for me.

>Also, I'm starting a logographic language identical to Japanese in phonotatics but different in grammar, vocabulary and logograms, so yeah, I know this shit is not viable on a TV-schedule basis.
