A general is different from a single "main" thread for a show. The kind of a general that should go are the 24/7 back to back threads that are only made to have the thread up, regardless of whether there's any need for the thread. Those do nothing but stagnate and invite crossboarders who only want to circlejerk with their buddies. A good example are the jojo threads which are absolutely garbage nowadays compared to what they were in the past.

Buyfag and drawfag threads are different in a sense that they have been an exception for the rules for years. They have a purpose and don't really hurt anyone, but today they both got this same notice because the mods are probably just giving a heads up in every thread that meets the criteria of a general at the moment. It was more than likely predicted cost vs profits. The actual merchandise runs on wafer thin profit margins if you can't get rid of "all" of it (which is why grails exist for buyfags; all products are limited editions in their own production life).

The anime was safer, as DVD sales are easy to recoup, and they were also getting advertising time in the show itself to pay for animation investments.

However, they probably tapped out all they could with Busou Shinki and left the toy line dead. FAG at least can tie in with Frame Arms sales, which makes sense that it's thrown at us more often with a strong product line.

However, for the life of me can't figure out why they're cheapening out on an anime...only to have it be in shitty 3D. I can only hope that's a preview mockup of how the show will actually look once it's actually animated.
