What level is it anyway? And what's the best way to tackle them? Do you read the entire sentence skipping over the blank part or do you read the answers first?

I just pulled it from N1 practise questions. I don't really have a method but I guess I read up to the blank and see if there's anything obvious to rule out, and then read the rest for more context.

>>

What do the sentences mean?
>>
>>>/jp/15778817

Holy shit, EOP deal with a whole lot of crazy shit. Just fucking learn Japanese.
>>
how do you start reading?
I mean, I understand that I have to mine words that I dont understand, but what happens if I dont understand the particles in a sentence but I still understand the general meaning of the sentence? Do I just ignore it and continue?
>>
>体がなんかおかしくて元に戻れなくなっちゃう!

Does the "なっちゃう" apply to both terms in the sentence in these cases? I.e. does that sentence mean "my body is feeling strange, it's not gonna go back to how it was!" or "my body is gonna become strange and not go back to how it was!"?
>>
>>146675040
Google it or look it up in DoJG to see how it works and how it's used to improve your understanding of it
>>
Should I read stuff with grammar I mostly understand (~80%) with occasional new grammar points and a lot of new words or something harder where sometimes I don't get like 40% of what's being said?
>>
>>146675115
Your first interpretation is correct. 戻れなく is in the continuative form, so なる is directly attached to it. I'm pretty sure you would have to make it おかしくなって to make the second one correct.
>>
>>146675377
>I'm pretty sure you would have to make it おかしくなって
So every time you have a sentences with multiple adjectives and you want them all to be -くなって you have to add -くなって onto each one, you can't just do -くて for all except the last?

How inefficient.
>>
Any recommendations for audio options for learning/practicing? I've got an 18 hour drive coming up. Nothing in the resource bin as far as I can tell.
>>
>>146675040
Just like everything else, it depends how much new stuff you are coming across.

If you are N1 level and come across something you don't know, you should look it up. If you are a beginner, you don't need to look up everything as long as you are confident in your interpretation of the general meaning.

The gayest thing in Japanese is needing context for sure. In English you can look at a sentence and you get a definite meaning out of it, but in Japanese... it's all so vague and every word has multiple meanings so unless you know the context some things you look at will always look like gibberish.

No, the rules of grammar don't change based on feels. There should be one way to interpret it in all cases where it's the same structure.

>>
>>146676124
I'd say so yeah, unless it's really hard, you have to find the sweet spot where it's above your level, but not so above that you literally cannot understand anything
>>
>>146676103
It isn't that common though and it's relegated to mostly retarded sentences nobody would use anyway.
>>
>>146676124
No. Don't listen to people who tell you to read things that are super hard for you.

What you want is something that is somewhat hard for you. If you are coming across more words a day than you can go through in anki, and are still coming across new grammar points, then you are improving quickly. If, as you say, you only understand 80% of grammar in easy stuff, then even easy stuff is plenty difficult for you
>>

You can't expect people to correct you. The benefits of talking to people are
-Sometimes they will give you the answer indirectly, due to continuing to speak about the same topic. Or, if you are looking for a word, they may offer suggestions.

-Just the act of trying to think of a way to say something makes it easier to remember the proper way to say it when you see the proper way in your chinese cartoons

I have a question; i have been studying since the beginning of the year, and at first all i was doing was studying kanji up to the point where i new 500 but i realized that that learning kanji wasnt necessarily help me learn the language any better, i needed to study vocab and grammar. So i downloaded kims guide and anki but i have ended up just studying the vocab in kims guide because i can apply that to his example sentences. Finally heres my question; Am i learning enough? I cant really tell if im making alot of progress or not much. Like i said, i know alot of kanji but my grammar is my biggest obstacle and practicing it is hardest i think. When ever i speak japanese with people i feel like i have to think about what i have to say and then in the end even if i say it right they usually just 日本語が上手ね?I feel like they are the worst ones to teach japanese
>>
>>146682659

>>
>>146682659
the only thing that will actually teach you the language is consuming copious amounts of it. the easiest way to do that properly is reading. in order to power through reading things, you need a baseline of grammar and vocabulary. that's what tae kim and anki are for.

Yeah, this happens a lot with people of other nationalities too. Normies are too preoccupied with being polite and whatnot to ever actually give you any solid advice. You also have to take into account the fact that random people you talk to will most likely not be language teachers and probably have no idea how to correct you either. You can tell this much just from reading comments from native English speakers on the Internet. Ew.

>>
>>146683257
In my experience those are rarely helpful. I took a course for several months a couple years back and we barely got past extremely simple grammar and phrases. Going through most of tae kim is pretty essential before you start reading, since that helps you primarily with vocabulary, whereas I get the feeling that watching gook toons is more useful for getting used to the flow of the language. As anon mentioned before, it's all about exposure. I learned a lot of vocab from just doing that before ever doing anki.

I'm unsure about the first line. I'm guessing it's something like:
"B has noticed what A has B lacks..."

>>146699729

>>
>>146699613
Read the guide.
>>
>>146699613
It depends how easily you memorize kanji through mnemonics compared to just learning them through vocab.

Suppose you can allocate an hour a day to anki, and could handle 25 new vocab cards a day in that time. If you did RTK instead and could only handle 25 RTK cards a day or fewer, then it's totally not worth it. But if you find the mnemonics make it easy and you could do 50 kanji in the same amount of time, then it's worth it. Just pretend learning a kanji by keyword is about half as useful as is learning a word containing that kanji, and use that to calculate time.

Also, if you think you'll need to actually handwrite (at a japanese college or something) and are planning to actually practice handwriting consistently to maintain it, then just do RTK.
>>
>>146699982
yeah but you're forgetting to mention that rtk doesn't teach you vocab, so even if you can do twice as many cards it's still not as efficient as core
>>
>>146700073
You can't actually believe that there isn't a point X at which knowing all the Jouyou kanji by keyword is worth more than knowing X words.
>>
>>146699613
Radicals and Core is the best way. Trust me.
>>
>>146699613
You can achieve at least half of what rtk does just by memorizing all the radicals, and then you won't have a head full of spurious "keywords" and gay mnemonics.
I would say don't even think about it unless you plan to do a lot of handwriting, since the main advantage of kanji study is that you will never get the order and position of radicals wrong.
>>
>>146699613
do something like rtk when you actually need more vocab and can otherwise already wipe your own ass in japanese
>>
>>146700479
What did he mean by this?
>>
>>146678873
When I got my job, they hardly knew what the JLPT was and they weren't really sure if the N1 was a big deal or not. I was told my ability was totally judged during the interview (also, I was given a translation test for both JP => EN and EN => JP)

This was at a large multinational company and I was applying for my current job in Tokyo. DESU, only the foreign people even vaguely knew about it. The Japanese people really don't know anything about gaijin language certifications, which makes sense.
>>
If you don't need mnemonics for words, why do you need mnemonics for kanji?
>>

It's twice as hard to figure out.
>>
>>146700654

Imagine if Japanese people learned English characters through keywords. So say, they learned C=月, A=鼠, T=木, then when they saw the word "CAT" they read it as 月鼠木 and remember the combination of these various keywords means 猫. Yep, sure making a strong case for yourself there.

If mnemonics work better for some anons, let them use them in peace. The worst that could happen to a newcomer is they waste a small amount of time trying one mnemonic system out before deciding that brute forcing was better for them.

>>
>>146706584
the information and mnemonics given in this book are probably the best for the purpose of making vocabulary acquisition easier that you can find in one plac
>>
>>146706337
RTK basically IS a really big mnemonic system, though? I'll attempt to explain it for those who never read the intro of the book.

You use mnemonics for each "radical" to compose story between them for a given kanji, which is assigned an English keyword. You review keyword to kanji to reinforce the writing and position of the radicals.

Then as you go on to learn actual vocab using said kanji, the keywords act as a sort of mnemonic themselves. Eventually you learn more and more words with overlapping kanji and just associate the readings / related words with the kanji and the keywords totally fall away.

It's just adding smaller baby steps inbetween, which makes it easier for some people. It's not really harmful to your overall vocab gaining speed IF you go through RTK quickly. In fact it likely makes it easier for the really terrible beginner "oh god another fucking new squiggle" stage, due to you already being comfortable with the vast majority of kanji being thrown at you.

Some people are okay with just brute forcing things, others prefer smaller, easier steps, whether that's learning a bunch of radicals or a more comprehensive approach like RTK or Kodansha etc. It's all the same in the end, let people try things out and see what sticks for them.
>>
>>146706717
RTK's mnemonics teach you keywords.

That is the point of contention. The keywords are not definitions in any meaningful way. That's why they're called keywords.
>>

I mean it's *literally* a waste of time. You can get the same results with less indirection. Use mnemonics to teach definitions or readings. Bam. No more keywords. Keywords are not representative of what words mean and the fact that you're meant to forget them only damns them to their irrelevance.

RTK is designed as a last resort for people with serious problems, like people with memory disorders that make it impossible to learn verbal (=linguistical) information without massive exposure.

Using the mnemonics directly is fair enough. Is that something you'd expect of MOST beginner learners though? /djt/ sneers at typical reddit / classrom learners, but there is a reason why they typically move so slowly.

It's easy to forget how overwhelming kanji can seem when you're a beginner, I don't think that's a "memory disorder", especially with so many similar sounding words and similar looking kanji. There's still value in some sort of organized system that helps you. RTK was designed with divide and conquer in mind, and by doing so it helps ease people into learning.

I can see that keywords may not be ideal, but how else can you introduce information without it being overwhelming (at least at first)?
>>
>>146707401
Seems that your problem is grammar, not vocab.
>>
>>146707401
Yeah once you hit around 2k words yotsuba gets easier. Core 2k/6k is misordered because someone thought it would be a good idea to do so. You're probably missing lots of verbs. Also make sure you know grammar fairly well and look up any slang you don't understand.

>>146707417
Normally I'll tell people to learn the kana and do anki vocab, and if they can't handle the vocab, to put it on a "life support" rate of 5 cards per day while they manually study the kanji in all the words they're having trouble with.

It's not a "memory disorder" to forget kanji. I'm saying that RTK is designed in a way that panders to people that have, or think they have (and thus have high stress that prevents them from acquiring the material) such memory disorders. That's not necessarily a problem, but it happens to make the mistake of teaching largely irrelevant keywords, instead of definitions or readings or something else that's directly relateable to vocab, and it makes that mistake because it's designed in that way.

Something that I did in high school that helped with my grammar was to try to write a grammar of my own.

After I read through Tae Kim, I got a pen and notebook and started writing what basically amounted to my own version of a Wikipedia article like an autist. It began with a brief explanation of how the four writing systems worked, in my own words, as well as I could manage. From there I went on to explain the difference between SVO and SOV languages, including what a subject, verb and object were.

Then I tried to explain the types of verbs and their conjugations, with maybe a paragraph each for the past-tense, negative, negative-past, て-form, 連用形 and ます, and about a line each for causative, passive, causative-passive, volitional, たい and so on.

After verbs came the copula, and then particles and nouns. I think I lost interest somewhere in adjectives. I no longer have the notebook.

But at the same time, I had been studying kanji, and after a certain point I began reading manga and light novels in Japanese. Whenever I encountered a grammatical structure I wasn't already familiar with, I looked it up—they didn't always stick the first time, but that just meant I had to look it up again the next time I saw it.

For my final project before graduating high school I translated a novel, not a light novel but a short bunkobon novel like someone might read on the train. I spent at least an hour on it every weekday for over a month, and at times I wanted to burn my battered copy of the book, but it gave me a better command of the grammar than anything I've ever done. I still have the file on my computer, although I haven't seen it in 4 years and imagine it's cringy.

I'm ashamed that this turned into a blog, but that's how I learned Japanese and now that I've written so much I feel compelled to post it. できない is a lie. Anyone willing to work hard can できる.

Would it be a waste of time to do Kodansha/RTK if I've already started Core?

Just make all your letters into ligatures. Bam. Double the room.

Many NES actually did this with the tiles for common word. FF1, for example, has a special text setup for the battle menus.

I didn't say abbrebiate. I'm talking about making condensed text rendering in some places.

By the way, is it possible to get the page to auto scroll? I got it working again but it reminded me, you have to keep going down every time if you are looking at the firefox page. Minor thing that adds up to a lot of wasted time.

Would love for it to just auto move down if such a thing is even possible.

It is. Check the archives.

japanese that's restricted to basic grammar and vocabulary is very different from japanese that's not restricted to basic grammar and vocabulary.

Probably rather a /jp/ question than djt, but anyway:

I remember that a few years ago there was a major incident involving matome blogs. They were forbidden to use 2ch threads as source for their posts.
Now I have seen a blog post that without doubt used a 2ch thread. Before I was thinking that they maybe were pulling their shit from twitter or some other board.
Has anything changed or have they merely never acted according to that ban in the first place?

>>146713475
They actually did. At least major popular blogs like yaraon started to use their own or futaba comments instead.
>>
>>146713504
Running out of UI space? Render condensed font. Running out of data text space? Add two-letter characters to the character set.
>>146713600
Some places did but small places don't necessarily.

Is she asking if they have any arms in the shop that only reduce defence strength without hurting any other stats? I mean not sure what else it could mean but seems a bit odd to say there.

Is she maybe asking it because she got out of the tentacle situation she was in while still having weakened defence? That's all I got.
>>
>>146714566
Her previous weapon gave her some bonuses while lowering defense. After she got addicted to cocks she just wants to lower her defense and fuck fighting.
>>
>>146714893
It lowered her defence but also paralysed her, at the end the paralysis wears off, but she still has weakened defence, and destroys the tentacle. I'd usually assume what you say yeah but with the above in mind doesn't fit.

Yeah, など. It's the paralysis that let the tentacle catch her so if she wanted to be raped again she should have kept using that weapon, so guess >>146714837 is the only thing that makes sense.
>>
>>146715035
She "accidentally" blasted the monster with that weapon's special attack but then regretted it and now just wants lowered defense to continue being raped and avoid accidents.
>>
>>146715328
But she didn't get raped because of the lowered defence, it was the paralysis as in >>146715035

It has to be >>146714837
>>
>>146715370
Lowered defense allows her to feel better.
