I've uploaded a more up-to-date version of the djt.neocities offline archive that can be found via the "offline archive" or via the following direct link:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/9chml4ihdaakj19/djt_learn_japanese.zip
Pic related is what is inside the zip. The djt_offline/djt_online.html files are shortcuts that can be placed on the desktop or what have you. Opening them in your browser will function the same as using the neocities site, only the obvious exception that they are local files, and the "offline" version of the site is hosted entirely locally outside of the grammar reference, feedback and dojg site/deck QC links. The final two for obvious reasons and the grammar reference because it is a different site entirely and not finished yet. An offline version of the current form of that would be nearly 100mb, with the image files, making it not really worth archiving, yet.

Reason I'm posting is mainly for feedback from the anons who were after an offline version, and a version they can easily host themselves, etc. For those wondering, yes they are static html pages, meaning they are not dynamic google documents pages. They are however very easy to update, even the CoR/Reading list.

I'm currently reading a book about Japanese history.

Did you know that back then, Japanese people only learned a set of vocabulary needed to do their job?
Kinda explains how such a complex writing system was even remotely usable, I mean even today it takes many years for them to learn their kanji, so I was always wondering how they did that back then.

There is also the story of a 8 year old boy that had the task to practice 4000 kanji everyday, I assume if he failed they would tell him to kill himself like they did all the time for no reason back then.

Man if had to kill myself if I don't do 4000 reps everyday I would probably become 出来る in no time.

The same thing happened all over the world. Not many fishermen would have known words such as stochastic or declension a few hundred years ago, if they even know them now.

How do you pronounce words like 完了 that have an ん and then a "r" series sound after it? Feels kind of weird.
>>
>>146627073
You're probably pronouncing your r's wrong
>>
>>146627073
Your tongue shouldn't change position at all while transitioning between the n and r.
>>
>>146627663

That's the part that feels weird. Like the sound blends and doesn't sound right.
>>

the りょ seems like it requires the kind of hammering of the tongue against the roof of the mouth

>>146627899
http://vocaroo.com/i/s008dl4IWQHm
>>
>>146627929
Your tongue should already be pressing against the roof of your mouth from the ん. Then it pushes off forcefully from the roof of the mouth while you're expelling air.

I hate to sound condescending but if you're worried about your pronunciation sounding weird you've got more problems than just んりょ.

The word should sound closer to this:

Say "butter" in an american accent. Not say "buddy" the same way. Not with a hard, difficult "d", but with a very rapid one.

Now say "buddio". Make it fast.

The "dyo" there is the same as the japanese りょ. Because japanese does natively distinguish "d" "i" as a valid sequence of consonant and vowel (it comes out as "dji" or "zhi" instead), this is not an overlap between different sounds.

You just have to make sure that your "r/d" sound does not sound like a voiced "t", like some anglos with heavy arbitrary gemination and aspiration do without realizing.

Your "r/d" sound needs to be very fluid when pronouncing a ら series syllable. Conversely, your だ series syllables need to be precise, otherwise you sound like those girls getting wrecked in doujinshi when they go 「らめらっ!」

Yes, that is how you pronounce nr. Again, the problem is only when the y is there.
>>146628763
So you just do the "y" as a short い instead of as a "consonant"?
>>
>>146629161
Of course. Some people analyze it as palatalization, but that's wrong. It's just a diphthong that starts on "y". The "cu" in "cute" is identical to "きゅ".

You'll always sound like a retard if you try to pronounce Japanese using the sounds from another language. That's what having a foreign accent is all about.

But a trilled r is closer to らりるれろ than the English rhotic r, so go for it.

>>
>>146617189
Yo, I just taught myself Katakana and Hiragana during my free time. I also know a good chunk of Chinese characters from dicking around with Chinese over the past couple years.

I have a background in learning languages, and checked some of the basics of the grammar and doesn't have the normal pitfalls of learning European languages (varied plurals, nominal infliction, gender). It seems inferring subjects is a difficulty with the language, as well as the adjectival infliction.

I'm curious what parts of Japanese make it very difficult. I may very well learn this shit, considering I'm getting into Kool Korean Kartoons now.
>>
>>146630055
>I'm curious what parts of Japanese make it very difficult

Resisting the urge to skip all the dialogue and just fap when you're doing reading practice with doujins and eroge
>>
>>146630055
>I'm curious what parts of Japanese make it very difficult

Vocab. You can't cheat by inferring the meanings of words due to common latin or greek or w/e roots like with European languages.
>>
>>146630222
He might be able to actually since he said he knows Chinese.

I don't know how much it's changed over the years but I think the chinese meaning of kanji is at least somewhat similar to root words.
I know there's tons of exceptions, but isn't there also a ton of really common words that are composed of kanji which fit the chinese meaning of the kanji pretty closely?

Refer to graph. It seems daunting when you know nothing, but when you begin learning the basics you start to think maybe Japanese isn't as hard as people say it is, that it's merely a rumor to drive off the weak willed. Then you actually started to learn it in earnest and you bravado turns to despair.

From what I've been able to tell, the way to properly do a Japanese r is your curl your tongue to the upper part of your mouth, and you flap it forward a bit, and produce a sound that sounds like an amalgamation of r, d, and l.
>>
>>146630655
This is pretty much correct. It waffles between those three sounds, so that sometimes it sounds almost exactly like one of them. In some songs I listen to the R's sound almost exactly like L's.

>>
>>146630055
The main hard part is just that, unlike chinese, readings of kanji in words are very unpredictable. Also, the grammar is very different from English.

But knowing characters is a big advantage, especially if you know some traditional too. You can probably handle 50 new words a day in Core. And once you know 4k words or so it's a lot easier to pick up grammar (not that you should be completely ignoring grammar before that point)

Okay /a/, here's a scenario for you.

One day, while you're sitting at your desk, a magical loli fairy flies out of your ass. She says she has a deal for you:

With one magical spell, she can make it so that you can master any language instantly, so long as you physically go to that country and spend 24 hours there. You will master the written and spoken forms of that language as well as all dialects and accents. You will be able to speak flawlessly and write with perfect grammar.

As a consequence however, once the spell is cast, you lose memory of all significant life events before you turned 18. This includes the names and faces of your parents, plus essentially everything you learned up through HS. You won't forget how to breathe or anything, but you won't remember any of your friends or any class you've taken before then. You can relearn all of this stuff, but your brain is forever altered in such a way that remembering names of people and even their faces is difficult. You can also relearn stuff you learned in school, like basic math and science, but it takes significantly more effort.

You will forget your native language, but you will regain full control after 24 hours at home.

Do you accept her offer, /a/?

Because Japanese has a shitload of homophones. Without kanji it'd be hard to make out the words in a text. On the top of that they don't even use spaces. It all boils down to the fact you can't make as many sounds with the Japanese syllables as with Latin letters

The doujin creator is infringing copyright to begin with anyways. The thread shits on RTK a lot, but if you find that during the grind the kanji are giving you a lot of trouble, consider some form of kanji study on the side. It usually happens when you encounter enough kanji with a very similar overall shape but different radicals - that are also sorta similarly shaped.

It doesn't matter which one you choose, radicals, KD, Kodansha, RTK etc. etc. they all lead the same place and will help you progress faster.

Reading? Speaking? Writing?

It depends on how serious you are about it.

Some people here talk about studying Japanese for 6+ years and have almost nothing to show for it.

Me myself have been studying for almost 3 months now and got the kana down + ~300 kanji and almost done with Tae Kim.

Browsing some old stuff on sad panda today and I came across this.

Not every day you come across a ten year old japanese pornographic comic referencing an obscure video game based on a 20 year old american movie.

>First question:
>Who is the player character in the MSX game 'Goonies'?
>Well, who do you think it is?
>M- Mikey?
>It's Mikey, isn't it?

That is the same guy who told someone in one of his comments that kanji in words like 観る[見る] and 聴く[聞く] are not used in modern Japanese. Pretty lame for someone with a channel dedicated to teaching kanji that clearly hasn't read a single volume of manga in his life.

Any similar programs/sites to wanikani that are free?

It's best to start as soon as possible, right after you learn hiragana and katakana. After all, essentially everything actually written in Japanese, with the exception of NES games and books for very young children, uses kanji.

It means you should post actual context and not just "sentence before that".

A list is just a list, whereas Core2k6k10k has sentences for context, audio, different learning order indexes, etc. Out of the box, so to speak, it is a polished product while with a frequency list you will have to make the deck yourself.

Do you mind making a deck yourself? If not, it might be better for you. Either way, within a few months and a few thousand words later, there shouldn't a great deal of difference either way.

Suppose there's fire, cold, wind, light, dark, whatever magic. It usually has strengths and weaknesses against certain elements. And then there's "colorless" magic to borrow MtG term, or unaligned. Which usually works against all elemental defenses equally.

Hi everyone, not sure this is the best place to ask this, please direct me elsewhere if it isn't.

I'm a professional translator, Spanish-English, I've read manga forever, and I'd love to help out a translator, but I don't speak any Japanese.
What level of Japanese would I need to obtain before I could help a translation group out?
Alternatively, do groups have a spot for a dedicated proofreader? As I have quite a lot of experience proofreading too.

Passing N1 is about the same difficulty as getting an average score on the SAT English section. (I've taken the SAT, ACT, JLPT N1, Eiken 1kyuu, and TOEIC)
>>
>>146666802
N2 or N3, it mostly depends on your conscience and how well you can suppress the "yeah I don't have any fucking business trying to do this" reflex you get when you only 80% understand something and have to bullshit the rest

your audience doesn't don't care

just looked up the JLPT, again, not sure if anyone will know this, but what's the rationale behind only testing passive language skills.

Besides that, does anyone have any idea on how long it takes to reach these levels? I'm used to romance languages that are much simpler (lexicaly) that Japanese
>>
>>146667148
I didn't screencaps, but I think the answer was 1.
>>
>>146667237
Because even passive Japanese ability is like Super Saiyan for a gaijin. To be able to write as well as a Japanese person would be like SSJ3 or something. (Kanken 1kyuu being SSJ blue)
>>
>all these dekinais with their anki set to english

>Passing N1 is about the same difficulty as getting an average score on the SAT English

the sample questions are seriously highlighting my lack of production ability, i greedily just wanted to read and listen, never produce.. guide says genki books, lang8, what did you do?

>>146667237
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese-Language_Proficiency_Test#Estimated_study_time

>but what's the rationale behind only testing passive language skills.
no idea, but that's what it tests, and anyone who cares about the test knows that that's what it tests

No one but retards will think you're a fluent speaker for passing N1, but to be fair, it does imply a certain minimum level of production ability

I'm guessing that's what passive means
>>
I wonder what level I am if I were to take the test now. Porbably not N1 because that requires actual study, but I've been reading and playing stuff in Japanese for quite a long time and my vocab improved a lot thanks to it. I barely use dictionary help.

>>
>>146667283

>>
>>146667573
N1. Just a couple weeks of dedicated preparation for it should do the job.
>>
>>146667573
it requires study to get a respectable score and a sense of achievement but if you just want to pass for the credential you barely need 50%
>>
>>146667065
There's just not that many places to post about the obscure kanji you read today.
>>
>>146667493
Ahh, shouldn't have skimmed the wikipedia article.
Seems like N1 is roughly equivalent to B2 in the European Language Framework.

Passive language skills are listening and reading, active language skills are speaking and writing, obviously for a translator passive skills are more important than active ones. Though most people and jobs prize active skills more highly, as they are seen to be more difficult to master.
>>
>>146667680
What study? People here say to just 'read a lot' after finishing TK and doing anki at the side.

How do you /study/?
>>
>>146667781
I'm specifically talking to him

"study" for him and people at his level will be flipping through the N1 grammar for two weeks, like >>146667620 said with maybe some timed reading on the side

half the grammar should already be known to him and nothing else will be an issue, so that for him will be his "study" if he wants to get a high score (which as I've said is not necessary)

it's not your "study"
>>
>>146667620
>>146667680
>>146667918
Interesting input. By studying I meant going over the grammar and maybe some harder vocab but yeah.

What does a "writing job" mean anyway?

You're not going to really do much with only 6000 vocab even if you master it.

I work in Japan and do a fair bit of translation, but 6000 wouldn't be anywhere near enough to even deal with routine business emails.

If you have trouble with stuff outside of grammar you just need to read/listen more. For grammar you should still be able to get a "passing" score just by reading more but if you go through shin kanzen master or something you'll be able to get all or all but one correct easily

Yeah だろうと聞いた is a bit weird, the other two are obviously wrong, and "だろうということだ“ has a few hundred thousand google results. That was actually a relatively hard question for me (above N1 level)
>>
>>146670702
>shin kanzen master
does that have worksheets or something to force me to produce, or just very similar style of problems as the tests used?
>>
>>146670898
similar to the tests

worksheets are stupid anyway.

Can you watch anime raw with few problems? If you can't, I don't think production is actually a priority yet. If you can, then yeah start writing in lang8 every day and try to figure out how to talk to japanese people
>>
>>146670895
Yeah I didn't really think about it, I just read them all in my head. I doubt I'm near N1 level though.

そうだ sounds weird to me when it's used with よると. Maybe because you're not necessarilyh being told it by someone. と聞いた for the same reason maybe. Idk they just sound really weird.

とのわけだ just doesn't really make any sense to me in this context
