ITS IMPOSSIBLE ITS COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE
>>
>>144575718
depends on how you define it

I've always found it kind of strange how the word "fluency" often gets modified here and other boards (namely /vg/ and /jp/) to mean mastery of consumption skills (reading and listening), or being able to write stilted, caricatured phrases in runes. Saying it anywhere else would immediately evoke thoughts of speaking, which is not only rare, but completely ignored.

this is understandable for a hobby board, but it makes it a decidedly wrong place to ask serious questions about "fluency," its time frame, and methods to get there, since we get very few people who've actually proven they've reached that.

assuming you were even talking about that kind of fluency to begin with

Fluency here always meant being on a level close to an educated Japanese adult, as in having both reading comprehension and the ability to hold a conversation about a fairly advanced topic.
That's a hurdle a bit higher than the usual "able to have a frivolous chat about nothing with some guy at a bar" definition of fluency you see elsewhere.

The one in the DOJG works like 赤道より北に. Using that logic it would say further (towards) island than south, i.e. further north. I doubt that's what's meant however so I assume this よりな works differently.

You're right,
fluency is a word with a lot of different meanings and frankly, it's getting bastardized by so many people. I'm German and I would consider myself fluent in English because I've literally spend my entire life on the internet and that's the level I'll be shooting for in Japanese, but when you hear most Germans speak English, even though they say they're fluent in it, they make the most blatant errors.

The thing that is in my opinion the most annoying are "polyglots". Maybe American don't feel the same but when you go to a polyglot youtube channel it's literally just 24/7 bragfagging about how "fluent" they are in so many languages and "dialects", usually shilling their books or blogs, but once you hear them talk in your native language it sounds absolutely horrible with constant grammar errors.

I have nothing against accents, it's incredibly difficult to lose them (I've been working hard on losing my English accent and I still have some) and some even sound pretty awesome but what these "fluent" "polyglots" do is just raping a language for the sake of youtube views and trying to trick others into buying their books.

My definition of fluency is being able to read, write and talk like a native or at least being very close to it.

I think those videos are overreacting. I've seen and talked to some foreigners in my country and sometimes they're getting called out by racist scum for no reason as well. Just gotta ignore them and live your life. Don't think that the exception is the rule, most people love foreigners and are very interested in them, except if they're ignorant and criminals.

>ESLs who think they're fluent in English
Your use of language is clearly unnatural and stilted - it is immediately apparent you are not a native speaker. While technically grammatically correct, your prose doesn't flow off the tongue the way a native's would, and hence you are not fluent. Of course, not being a native you don't realise your lack of ability, and people are too polite to correct you, so you live an arrogant deluded life of lies, where you think yourself equal to the natives around you, never realising their deep inner thoughts of disgust and repulsion at your bastardization of the English language.

You would do well to remember that language is thought; it is only through words humans are capable of expression and of emotion. 1984 portrayed this quite eloquently with the attempt of controlling dissident thought through the use of manipulating language, but it's fairly self-evident. So when you have the language of the internet, namely English, be that means of self-expression, that is how we demonstrate our individuality. An ESL is incapable of properly generating prose, this is clear simply by looking at their mangled, stilted sentences, and to a native, this means they sound like a mentally retarded person. This is not a metaphor, their expression of thought is quite literally that of someone who is unable to properly form coherent sentences, namely a retard. So to us, you ESLs are no different from someone with fetal alcohol syndrome, or Down syndrome, etc. Hence it is no wonder we look down upon and scorn you.

"are" here should be "is", because "thing" is singular. The whole phrase sounds strange anyways: "thing" is singular, but "polyglots" is plural. Also, polyglots are people, not things. I'd recommend rephrasing it entirely.

Be careful about overusing the word "literally", it makes you sound like a millenial who's spent too much time on reddit.

The grammar of Japanese is simple, yet understanding a paragraph is often times difficult because of a lack of practice with sentences' omissions that one is expected to derive from context. What do you call this aspect of difficulty? Learning Japanese is generally divided into vocabulary, kanji/kana and grammar, but I feel like the difficulty of understanding context when studying Japanese doesn't fit into any of them.
>>
>>144580784
>What do you call this aspect of difficulty?
It's not an aspect of difficulty or anything like that, just your lack of experience. Only way to deal with that is to read more.

From that view vocabulary isn't difficult either since it's just a lack of memorizing them.

Learning to understand context is a major part of learning Japanese and one a lot of people get stuck on, but calling it "Japanese's difficulty of grasping context" doesn't have a very nice ring to it.

Like, Japanese is a difficult language to learn for foreigners, despite having simple grammar and kanji and vocab being a simple matter of memorization. The reason is what you call a lack of experience, but what exactly is it that you fix by gaining experience? I know I'm getting into autism territory here but there should be a term for it, shouldn't there?
>>
>>144580896
I think proper term for it is "autism".
>>
>>144580925

I have a question about using Anki.
I just got 起きる in core2k and there's a card both for "to get up" and one for "to occur". This is pretty confusing, since they're impossible to tell apart. Currently I just try and answer with both meanings every time 起きる appears, but it's getting pretty annoying.

So how should I deal with it? I'm guessing this probably won't be the last time multiple cards appear with different readings. I've thought of merging them into a single card with both meanings, but I'm unsure if that's a good idea.

What's recommended here? I'm guessing that the deck is structured the way it is for a reason, but right now it's pretty irritating.
>>
>>144581127
It's one of those things you've just got to dealio with. Merge the cards and delete 1, try to recall both readings every time.
>>
>>144581127
I would remove one of them and later on learn second meaning from context.
>>
>>144581127
Core is dumb with things like that so you have to put info from both cards into one.
Or just fucking delete second one, that's what I did.
>>
>>144581217
>>144581221
>>144581211
>Merge the cards and delete 1, try to recall both readings every time.
Alright, I thought that would be the case.
Plenty of cards already have multiple meanings attached to them, so I was confused as to why this one was different.

I'm guessing learning the secondary meaning from context is the smart way of doing thing.
Thanks anons.
>>
>>144581342
Just wait till you get to words with different meanings AND readings.
>>
>>144580138
Meanwhile 2channel has like 20 anime boards

I guess they all just stuck with whatever was popularized first (just like any new English imageboards are dead on arrival even if they are improvements over 4chan because people just don't want to move)
Plus I think futaba was only created as a backup site for 2channel possibly shutting down, so that could also be why it never took off as its own thing.
>>
>>144581221
>core is dumb with things like that
How'd you handle homonyms in a flashcard system then?

>>144581127
Try to think of the happening nuance of 起きる as a situation awakening or something, that's how it works and that let's you only need to recall a single "meaning."

>>
>>144581127
both of those meanings are so common that you really should be able to produce both

I would hit Hard and pass it anyway if you got one meaning but not the other, but I wouldn't let it get too mature if you consistently struggle to produce the second meaning. You can invent your own system though.

>>144581377
Those kinds of words should be learned out of anki, you could easily fill a page of notes on them and it would be much more time-efficient than making a grotesque memecard with five definitions
>>
>>144581414
Well, in the end I don't think it's that much of problem. I guess I'm just annoyed that it fucked with my rhythm. It's probably not a big deal after you make the connection in your head.

For a native speaker it wouldn't be complicated.
For a learner, you could first find 吐 then look all combinations of 吐+kanji that can also be a -suru verb, with the second kanji looking like the one you're looking for, and of course its meaning making sense in the context of the sentence.

Pic related.

Obviously this is for a hypothetical scenario where I have no way to quickly search for the kanji.

No. Kanji are absolutely necessary in order to communicate in Japanese. That is why learning to speak in kanji is such an important yet difficult skill to acquire for foreigners and natives alike.

Write every Kanji more than once and write at minimum one word that it's used in (unless it's one of those fucking stupid ones that have virtually zero use). Search in Jisho to get extra words when not enough are listed or when something isn't understood.

Lots of people consider it not worth their time. While writing can help improve retention, it also greatly increases time spent learning and for lots of learners being able to write by hand is not a priority (or something they are not interested in at all).

How many reviews do you do a day? For how long? And how many new words?
When I practiced writing (was a around 400 Kanji) I could remember them pretty decent but it took like forever so I didnt do many new cards. Now I'm at 2000 Kanji and dont write them at all. Its much faster which allows one to add more words and do more cards a day IMO
>>
I'm in my 1200 card of my core2k and just last week started using my kanjidamage as a kanji reference/help. I had my doubts because people tend to warn you about it, but honestly, their keywords, examples and hints are superb and is slowly gaining terrain as my main reference page.
I often hear people say that is inaccurate or plain wrong, but i'm yet to find a single error ( compared to the tradional dictionaries )
>>
>>144612760
1-3 for most. The problem is that even if it takes you several more reviews to actually have the kanji stick, you're still spending less time on the reviews because writing slows you down so much.

I'm not telling you to not write, it is a helpful tool and if writing is something you find important you might as well learn it. It's just not something everyone cares about, and I'd much rather spend my limited time on actual reading or other exposure to the language than increasing my anki time 3 fold.

"Intermediate" is far too broad of a descriptor to give you a good answer, but honestly the answer is: as much time as you can without burning yourself out.

>>
>>144614331

I guess I anticipated that. Well, I guess at a respectable level would mean using manga to read through and practice Japanese as a sort of learning experience, while getting through them with relative ease (not a terrible painstaking experience). But I obviously I also don't mean being able to breeze through manga without consulting any materials
>>
>>144614562

>>
>>144614563
The main problem is that when you start out reading real content you are going to have to consult a dictionary several times every page, and if you're like most people here, you're probably going to end up putting a lot of those words in to an anki deck. It takes quite a long time to build up the vocabulary required to "comfortably" read through something.

An hour a day isn't really that much. That being said, what >>144614562 said is valid. Starting out at a huge amount of invested time every day is probably not going to work out well. An hour a day is probably fine to start out with, but once you get passed the "true beginner" stage, which is to say once you get through Tae Kim/Genki/whatever you use you're probably going to have to start ramping up your study time to make truly meaningful progress.

How did this end up being the way to learn Japanese? Surely no one picked up an English dictionary while flipping through Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter to keep consulting unknown words. By the time one picked up a book to read, most of the vocab and understanding was just

I started reading Sekirei before I finished Kyoiku Kanji, and although there were words and Kanji I didn't know at the time I was able to look them up easily and understand what was going on and follow the story.

I'd recommend playing Pokemon in Japanese. Preferably a game you're already familiar with that you've played in English. Getting X/Y or OR/AS would be good since you could first play through the games in English, and then restart and select Japanese as a language without having to buy a separate game. X/Y and OR/AS have an option to toggle Kanji on or off, and all previous games just have kana.

>>144615415
Let me rephrase.

My current thoughts are two

1: As a child/teenager, after having learnt basic English grammar, I never remembered flipping through dictionaries as much as I do now with Japanese. Same goes for chink, barely used the dictionary. Somehow, I had picked up nearly all the vocab needed to read the books I could at that age.

How did all that vocab get picked up?
Feel free to point out if you spent a majority of your childhood learning your primary with a dictionary, I'm just assuming things.

2: With English in hand, I can now read English guides on basic Japanese and work from there. However, babies, with no prior language, are able to grasp these ideas and concepts at a similar pace, if not faster.

How do they do that?

This is more on languages than /djt/ really but I'd like to hear what you guys have to say.

As a child you have all the time in the world to learn to speak, and you're also constantly being bombarded with content in your target language.

>However, babies, with no prior language, are able to grasp these ideas and concepts at a similar pace, if not faster.
Nigga, children can't talk properly until they're like 2 years old and even then they can barely form coherent sentences.

Depending on your first language, english might've been really, really easier, that's why you probably didn't need the dictionary that much. Or you've just forgotten how much you've used it already.

My native language is portuguese and I also didn't spent so much on dictionaries for english because so many words are alike:
Counting on = Contando com
Check, Select, Visit, etc = Checar, Selecionar, Visitar, etc
Not to mention all loaned words.

This isn't the same for oriental languages though so I spend a LOT on the dictionary for japanese.

As for children, they're in the age where they absorb everything, they are curious about everything, and mimicry others.

I'd say any adult can learn just as fast, even faster probably is he thinks on better ways to learn, than a children if he can maintain that sort of thought the entire time, but this isn't true for most adults.
Most adults already think they know what they need and/or don't put enough effort or think "I'll do just a little because yes" and don't have an inquisitive mind anymore.

They'll eventually learn when they overcome their self-imposed barriers/limitations.
>>
>>144616525
It wasn't intentionally bad, I simply thought of it as "textbook" japanese, or was there anything else that wasn't it?

Yes and if you learned Japanese with the same mindset and same exposure as a 2 year old you would too.

If anything adults are MORE capable of quickly learning a language, they're just afraid of making silly sounding mistakes when communicating with other people so they are inhibited in doing so.

Search "Krashen" on youtube and find a video of him talking about language learning that doesn't bore you to death. Then find the next one. Then google his name for a bit.

The actual monographs and papers are nearly worthless to someone that isn't actively studying linguistics, because the general state of things is extremely straightforward and you don't need to vet the evidence or cases in order to understand what's probably going on in the head.

As you said, babies don't speak any language at first. This is an advantage because they are able to get the grasp of a language from a completely unbiased standpoint, since they are unable to rationalize it and try to make sense out of it using another language, which every adult does.
Plus, kids don't waste their time asking everyone how to learn a language, what material they should use or how well they should be doing by X months.

However, considering the sheer amount of information to which most adults have access, like dictionaries, classes, traveling, and just about anything you can find on the internet, I don't believe they fall behind when it comes to learning a language.
Maybe adults procrastinate more or miss a few opportunities due to feeling insecure in their abilities, but still I don't think an adult who is able to understand the process of language learning and its difficulties is in any way worse than a child.
