Not every kanji is actually used as a word on its own. Though it can still be somewhat useful to have a general idea of what a kanji means on its own, for guessing the meaning of jukugo you don't know or something.
>>
>>144499536
Kanji is just what vocab is made up of, not the vocabulary itself

With kanji study you just learn that 食 has the connotation of "food", and that it's made up of the radicals
>>
>>144499536
Kanji is not words, vocab is words. If you learn 200 kanji you will know close to 0 words. If you study 200 vocab words you will know 200 words. You need words to read, you read to learn.
>>

If the words are common or important I don't really see the point. Also why not just stop doing the deck instead of deleting it completely, so you could always go back?

I just mine everything to a big ass deck as I come across it. My problem now is if I read as much as I'd like I'll end up with way too many reviews. The solution is probably just to skip words once I feel like reviews are starting to be too much.

all jokes aside, you better do some kanji study. it'll make it easier to mine later on. unless you have a thing for drawing. yeah i'm an idiot, just telling other idiots
>>
>>144500095
This was my issue

I gathered so many useless situational vocab only used in a specific chapter in a specific manga

Constantly making fresh decks for new reading materiel ensures that I learn the most common words shared between all manga first, while spending time on situational vocab only as long as I actually read the manga this vocab is used in
>>
>>144500148
Don't worry, we're all blind.

First time in a DJT thread, I've just begun learning Japanese again after a hiatus and I'm still struggling slightly to differentiate the topic particles は and がbeyond the obvious stuff such as differentiating one specific item from a group, and use in question sentences. I checked the link and I just want to clarify things.

Would it be right for me to say that you would use は to describe the property of a noun, and you'd use が to state what that noun actually is?
As in
(noun)は(adjective)
(noun)が(noun)

as in

田中は日本人です
Tanaka is Japanese

田中が犬です
Tanaka is a dog

Is this at least, one of the main differences?
>>
>>144500235

Didn't you read Tae Kim? Summed up in one section. が is more like an emphasis.

I don't see how. Remembering what kanji means is already trivial and doesn't justify a separate study and no kanji study will save me from kanji with gazillion reading or vague ass kana only words.

You can only use this when you're modifying a noun. Otherwise, like now, you have to use 背が高い.

Yotsuba is pretty magical

I remember it being somewhat of a bitch at a beginner level though because of all the slang

This is true, except for those very common cases where there are multiple はs per sentence

This is normal though. の can replace が in clauses, and even outside clauses, if you imply a word like 人 as the modified noun, or simply bend the grammar like happens very often. Though it doesn't sound quite natural here, just pointing it out since the "(wtf の before an adjective)." made it seem like you didn't know

I'll try but no promises.
>>
>>144508783
I don't know if it's just me but, I found that after doing them in the morning everyday for like a month or so, my retention started going to shit, so I started doing them in the evening everyday again and it went up, so maybe the key is just not doing them at the same time everyday for too long
>>
>>144509089
It's best to do them whenever you're most alert. I'm alert in the morning because I sleep properly.
>>
>>144509089
There's some studies indicating that retention is better for people studying shortly before sleeping, as they get more benefit from sleep's ability to help you store memories made during the day.

Just feels very counter-intuitive, since your concentration is lower when tired, but remember that retention isn't necessarily correlated with how good you feel you are at doing your reps.

止めはしません is like a more emphatic negation of 止める. It's used in this case to contrast her actions - The speaker won't stop the person, but they will (at least) tell them to take care.

Zero no Tsukaima, 41% through it so far and I am enjoying it. Reading it really makes me want to watch the anime again. Zero no Tsukaima and Shakugan no Shana were some of the first series I watched when I started getting into anime, and I've always wanted to be able to read the LNs. It is great that I can actually read them now, despite not understanding or misunderstanding a lot of sentences. Unfortunately only the first ZnT novel is in the AZW pack, so I might have to switch over to Shakugan no Shana or something else for my second LN.

The good thing about reading LNs is that I can actually see my progress. I love seeing my % read steadily, but slowly, rising. Reading on my Kindle is nice because it is easy to look things up, but the dictionary kind of sucks, especially compared to Rikaichan.

My goal for the year was to read 3 VNs, but right now it is looking like it will be 2 VNs and 1 LN.
>>
I'm trying to read a PDF but the text, despite being written horizontally, is interpreted as if each character is on its own line. When I copy and paste it, I have to remove the line breaks, and rikaisama won't parse it. Is there any way to fix this?

Funny that ZNT has come up in this thread, my original plan was to attach this very image to my whiny post about Anki.

The novels are way, way superior to the anime. They completely skipped over the 8th novel, which is the most important one for the development of Saito's character. Man, that was years and years ago and I'm still pissed thinking about it.

Shakugan no Shana was the anime that got me into this lifestyle too, good times. Probably won't get around to reading the LNs though since there are too many better series and they take so long to read.

Are you still only reading a few tens of minutes each day? Because that's really not a good idea.
>>
Hey /djt/ I don't study moon, just pick up some with anime. How come yasashikata is subbed as "was kind" when kata means something like a method (like in yarikata)? Shouldn't it be translated as "way(s) of being kind"?

Surprised how prominent this is, I sent multiple complains regarding this shit to the dumbfucks who officially translate chinese cartoons. Should I just watch raws? We all know that subs are localized to hell, and let's not get started with memesubs like commie either.
>>
Just a minor question.
この辺りは昔、湖だったであろうと思われる。DoIJG translates this as "I think that this area was probably a lake a long time ago."
but it sounds more like "It is thought that this area was probably a lake a long time ago" or "It appears this area...... etc."

This is more consistent with DoIJG's entry for 思われる and the fact that 思われる is in passive form. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think 思う would be more appropriate for the DoIJG example right?
>>
>>144525958
Now you mention it, it's been years and years since I read through ZNT... last time I did there were only 12 novels and I hadn't even begun studying Japanese yet (obviously I was reading translations). I reckon I should pick it back up for some more delicious reading practice. I need to do a better job complimenting my reps with other material, and reading is probably where I slack the most!

Last I heard, they were going to continue through with the rest of the novels after Yamaguchi bit the dust. That was a while ago, though, I wonder if you know how much progress has been made? I'm pretty clueless.
>>
>>144526125
かった is what you're hearing. Katta, not kata. It's being conjugated in the past, 優しかった is the past-tense of 優しい (kind)

Many things will conjugate in the past with a かった at the end. Yasashii and other verbs that end in い all do it.

You really need to find a way of getting yourself to read more. What about reading several things at once, like a VN and an LN and a manga of different genres, so when you're not in the mood for one you can switch to the other? Or just setting up a certain timezone each day and not letting yourself do anything but reading during that time?
>>

I can't learn new words unless I use Anki. I didn't mine while reading Flyable Heart and I learned almost no vocab from it.

I do my Core5k reviews, 10 new words in my mining deck, and 3 new cards in the DOJG deck. I don't even really review the DOJG deck, I just read the short description on each card and hit Hard. I only get 70-80% retention on my mining deck, so my daily reviews keep increasing.

I have 11k mined vocab, on top of the 2k words I did in core, and I just barely understand like 3/4 of your typical SoL show, and that's after quite a lot of practice

If you want to understand raw anime you have to practice your listening comprehension not your vocab

the context was really long and stupid so I elected to leave it out

but it was spoken by a character and used exactly like 実を結ぶ
the context did involve a ダッチワイフ and potentially some alien corpses and some plans involving them that might "bear fruit" but I'm not sure if that has any significance to 身 or what

sometimes I feel I'm missing some sort of education on how to interpret kanji in this language, or confirmation on exactly what the process of choosing them entails or exactly how deliberate a switcheroo like that one might generally be

My mom assumed 幼女戦記 was like a Japanese version of Schindler's list or Anne Frank's Diary or something when I described the plot to her as "a Japanese man is reborn as a young girl in Nazi Germany" and commended me on reading it. I didn't have the heart to tell her the truth.
>>
>>144532085
I've recovered from 2500+ and even greater backlogs inside one day before. The trick for me is to do it in little chunks with breaks in between. In my case I decrease total remaining cards by 100, take a 5-minute break, repeat. You pretty much need to set aside an entire evening for this though.

The other option is to just get the skip today's reviews add-on and deal with a slightly higher than normal workload for two weeks.

Thanks, I was half expecting troll responses.

I assumed the skip today's reviews addon was a bad addon. It just sounded like a "don't do work" addon. But if it can spread them back out over a number of days I might try that. I've never used any addons that modify when cards are due though. I wonder if I should just do the hard thing and review them all normally.

I really want to get a proper schedule and plan down, to get it back under control, say by the end of the month. If I don't have a plan to stick to, I don't know if I can ever get them down. So the former sounds more tempting, since it would give me a set amount to do each day again. But if I do it once, I could get into the habit of skipping in the future, which seems like a bad habit.

I had something like this happen before, I just made a new deck (the 2016 one) and capped the old decks, never adding new cards to them. Eventually they came down over a period of months. I don't really want to do that again because a lot of the words in 2016 are quite new and I mined them all myself, so it's stuff I do want to know in the near future, but the thought of going through 2500+ cards is so intimidating.
>>
>>144532459
If you install a lazy add-on it'll become a crutch and you'll abuse it.

Set your daily review limit to something like ~1000 and finish that many every day. If you want to do more, go ahead, but make sure you finish those reviews every single day.

After a week or so you should be back on schedule.

Like seriously there are practically no solid rules for how a word's spelling will relate to how it's pronounced. There are general guidelines at best.
I really feel sorry for foreigners trying to learn English that would have to put up with this bullshit, especially considering English is the most common second language in the world.

I don't get the second part here. Context: People wake up, no memory of anything except history up until the 21st century. They see something that shouldn't be possible in the 21st century.

>If they did something to our memory, then this is the far future
>If they did something to our body (???) then this is the present

Or something like that? I don't get what the body has to do with anything
>>
>>144536721
As someone else already said, do you frequently think about English pronunciation being changed so it makes sense, or abolishing capital letters because they're really unnecessary? Japanese people have more important things to care about than a language they already know, the same goes for any person with regard to their native language.
>>
>>144537155
I don't mean the rules and exceptions. I mean the very basis of the writing system. English is really easy anyway.
I'm talking about why are kanji still used, when they have kana which reproduces the syllables in a word just as well, and doesn't have you memorize thousands of kanji. There are homonyms in every language, but their meaning is effortlessly determined from the context.
And in its turn, kana itself is excessive. All syllables can be replaced by a combination of consonants and vowels. That would help to reduce the number of characters used in writing by a magnitude, like in languages that use alphabetical system.
>>
>>144537311
If you use our memory as a base this is the distant future, but if you use our bodies as a base it's the present
>>
>>144537354
>English is really easy anyway.

>>
>>144537365
Ah that makes much more sense, thank you.
>>
>>144537323
Well, as a non-native English speaker, I often think English could do away with articles. But I guess you're right, I don't often think about my native language in that way. But then again, it's writing system is also alphabetical and isn't nearly as complicated as Japanese, so I don't think it's in a dire need of any more simplification.
>>
>>144537354
Most Japanese seem content with their current system and are probably not going to be in favor of changing it for the foreseeable future. If you're not willing to deal with kanji, you're fucked. Kanji isn't really the hardest part of the language either, just the most visually intimidating one.
>>

All this talk about what's easy or hard...
In a sense, I feel japanese is easier, or more specifically, more free than english.

There's no prepositions of the sort and everything feels more image/concept based.

I've been practicing moon sentences for less than a month and they feel way easier than english, which it took me probably years to stop typing in broken english (and even now it's still not perfect).
Besides the times I pick wrong verbs or words/concepts, there doesn't seem to be something like "broken japanese", just "that's a really weird way of saying that".
>>
>>144537545
Hey, I may quit even before that. Don't bully kanji.
Maybe it's because I'm an engineer, not a humanities or linguistic graduate, so the whole concept of kanji seems really excessive and redundant to me personally, especially when they came up with kana later.

"Why not use IPA Mincho?" Because IPA Mincho is unbalanced in ways that make absolute beginners have a harder time recognizing gothic and kaisho kana (bear in mind that the canonical form of all japanese characters, the 教科書 form, is very similar to kaisho and not to mincho).

I was also looking for one but like many, I couldn't find anything better than OCR Manga Reader.

There IS one that seems a bit better from the little I tested, however it isn't free - Yomiwa.
You can get a free week of the premium features (which includes an OCR which seemed nice in the 2 images I tested it) but I forgot to test it more along the week so meh.

If you're more of a patient type though, I'd recommend picking any dictionary you want (Akebi for example, pretty good) and Google Input, then setting it to japanese.
Then you scribble whatever you think it is and google magically figures that for you.

Surely it's a pain when you don't know like 90% of the kanji but when you don't need to look that much is sorta nice - I also think it helps my retention since I have to draw it, sometimes more than once.

Anyway, in case you test Yomiwa please tell your input later, I'm still considering buying it if it's OCR (and other features which I already forgot) are good.

Learning vocab is a more efficient use of your time. Only study an individual kanji if you are having a hard time remembering a vocab word. The on reading is the original Chinese pronunciation I believe. All kanji have at least 2 different ways to say them.

>>
>>144559736
I went about learning it by doing the core 2k/6k anki deck and then eventually making my own deck with words I see while reading. You can learn vocab without needing to studying the individual kanji. You will slowly learn the kanji readings by doing vocab, which is why it is more efficient. Sure you can study individual kanji but at the very least do not study kanji alone without doing vocab. Kanji is not words you will not be able to read by studying individual kanji.

Finding anime to watch raw is too hard. If it is something interesting, then I want to have subs so I can understand it, but if it isn't interesting then I don't want it at all.

Maybe I should just watch all of Detective Conan like that one guy did awhile ago. I've already seen the first ~400 episodes, so I wouldn't feel like I was missing out.

Articles still exist because english noun phrases are not infected heavily and need more information on what varieties (notice how I didn't say cases or forms) of what nouns are at play

In particular, marking names is a disaster in english (all honorifics are titles like sir or doctor) and articles completely prevent it from being a problem
