No, it doesn't work that way. Minmay's personality, as we saw in Flashback (and the First), is indeed like DYRL. She looks like in DYRL because it was her who played her role. She officially spent time trapped with the Zentraedi according to chronicle, contradicting the tv series, because she became that ambassador of peace that Zents love to death and why so many spent decades chasing after her MIA status.

TV series gives more details, but gets things plainly wrong. DYRL was Kawamori's vision of Macross. And it's Kawamori who took over the franchise.

In Macross, Kawamori defined Misa as heroine while Minmay as star, but those expressions were misunderstood by the fandom. Misa isn't a heroine because she's 'heroic', he was talking about her status as love interest which in Japan is labelled as heroine. While Minmay is the protagonist and star of Macross.

Hikaru was a witness, a POV, of Minmay's story, while Misa was his love interest (after she was retconned there).

Honestly, why did they even make Mirage a main character. If Kawamori really wanted the triangle to be faint he should have just scratched Mirage and replace her with Mikumo.

Have the plot be the exact same thing it is now, but just without Mirage being part of the main three. Then the triangle would have Mikumo, Freyja and Hayate. Everyone thinking Mikumo will eventually steal Hayate, but she won't she'll just be mysterious her. And then Hayate and Freyja can be either friends or hook up.
