I haven't been doing it as often lately because I get distracted by reading or something else, don't notice the thread dying, and someone else makes a new thread within a minute or two of the old one dying. It shouldn't really be a big deal, the point of his post was more that if people are going to make a new thread within a minute of the old one dying, using a consistent image for those cases helps prevent duplicates.

It's inevitable. If one person stops, another begins. It's the way of life. I can't remember a time it hasn't been like that. Notice how /vg/ doesnt have consistent images but doesn't have a huge problem of duplicate threads. Reason being, one person takes up the mantle for most generals.
>>
>>138756005
A secret club FTP would probably be better so there aren't dead torrents and people having to host tons of crap they don't care about / reveal their IPs if they're not using a VPN, but the CoR is used on enough different sites that trying to make the CoR's contents private would just attract more outsiders into the thread.

If I don't I just forget words really fast. Yesterday I've learned 20 new words after lunch, tried custom study of forgotten words and I've already forgotten most of them.

>>138756304
>>138756345
I know. It's not the first time I'm learning a foreign language, but with kanji most words just don't stick with me. I forget how to read it most of the time and sometimes I even think I've never even seen that word only to realize that I've learned it yesterday or a few days back.

I've only learned kana before starting vocab and anki, which took me 3 days. So it's 10 days if you count that.

If you feel it'll help you can add an additional step, you know how with new cards you have to get it right twice for it to go through, you can go in the options and add a third or even forth one, helps a bit with remembering new cards

I'd say it's too early to say whether you actually have problems on retention or not but for your consideration you could try kangxi radical deck, rtk, any kanji book other than rtk, kd, kd deck, or any variation of method that could help you retain information by being able to deconstruct kanji to some smaller components.
>>
>>138756529
If after two weeks, you still feel kanji is the problem, do a radicals deck. If after that, you still feel kanji is the problem, do something like RTK or KD.

It is. English (as a second language) is being taught from elementary school. Then from 5th grade you can choose between Russian and German. When you reach 10th grade you can drop English and Russian/German or even pick a 4th language. I didn't drop anything, but didn't pick another language. Also, English is still taught at most colleges/unis.

No but you can have this low res cutout and a reminder that you can't learn Japanese.
>>
>>138757467
I don't use it often enough to be able to judge that. I only use it for some technobabbles, esp. introductory technobabbles, in some manga. So once every 3-4 chapters if not less.

It's always accurate to me. You know manga have dialogues in balloons and mumblings outside the balloons, I never tried it on the outside dialogue-box lines, so I don't know how accurate it is.

> I prefer having the full original sentence whenever I'm mining
I don't capture the whole sentence. I just highlight the words-Firefox-Rikai. I don't bother mining it half the time. It's not like I'll ever see チャクラ解剖刀 outside of Naruto for example.

My guess is I don't think mining a complete sentence will works 100% of the time for manga with capture2text just because sentences often split to separate dialogue boxes.

thanks for the reply, but I still wonder why it's bad for me to learn Kanji in the order that Japanese kids learn. They learn easy Kanji or common Kanji for the first grade, right?
>>
>>138759752
The vast majority of jouyou kanji (1000-1500) are used so commonly that whether one is more common than the other is entirely irrelevant. Grade 1 kanji is not particularly easy, because no kanji is harder than another - just rarer (which is not relevant for the majority of jouyou kanji which are not rare).

Forgot the main point. Because they're all so common, there's no *need* to learn in the order kids do. It won't be good, or bad. Therefore, learning in an order that's easier to learn or more efficient just makes sense.
>>
>>138759752
its only bad because its curriculum designed for people learning japanese as their primary language and its spread out over many years in which youre using japanese every day in between coursework

the material is fine but youre at a communication level much higher than that of a child (assumedly) so you can use that to your advantage with higher level study methods/materials

Japanese kids learn the 'most useful' kanji first, not the simplest one. For instance, compare these five kanji 叱 泊 雨 雲 曜. It seems rather obvious that the first two are simple. Indeed they don't have many strokes, and they're easy to remember. On the other hand, the last three, especially the third seems harder to remember and draw.
Now compare the approximate meaning of each : to scold, to stay overnight, rain, cloud, day of the week. While being easier to retain, the first two kanji relate to more complex ideas than the last three. Just look at the kanji for day of the week, it really doesn't seem easy to write/remember. The complexity of a kanji doesn't necessarily relate to the idea behind it.
Yet, if you follow the way Japanese kids learn kanji, you'll learn 曜 way before 叱. But for kids, it's rather logical since they know what both words are, they only need kanji to write/read them. As an adult learning Japanese, you don't already know the words. In conclusion, learning each kanji individually the way Japanese kids do it isn't a great idea overall. If you want to study kanji, either do it through Core or some form or vocabulary, or go for a logical step progression method, like RTK, Kanji Damage or Kodansha's Learner Course.

>I'm interested in the order that Japanese kids learn.
Nah, don't do that.
Instead try something like KanjiDamage's deck based on how common the kanjis are, this way you'll be learning the most used kanjis first, regardless of meaning or strokes, and the uncommon ones later.

An output based game could be fun and useful.

>adventure/puzzle game
>play as a native English speaking dude stuck in a village where people only speak Japanese (could be a fantasy world, could be IRL Japan)
>need to figure out what the mcguffin to solve the problem is, find it, and use it
>existence, location, and use are obscured in such a way that it's basically impossible to figure out unless it's explained to you
>explanation comes from villagers, whom you need to communicate with in order to solve the game's puzzles
>villagers are dumb as fuck, and will only understand you if you communicate naturally (acceptable break from reality for the sake of learning)
>game contains some guidance in English (i.e. grammar hints, reminders of what words hold what nuance, etc.) to help you along, in the form of the protagonist remembering what he's learned
>have to type your answers, so that you're not just hitting things randomly until you get it right

If I were proficient at Japanese, I'd make this game. Preferably with oversight from a 国語 professor.
>>
>>138763905
romaji automatically means the person has no idea what they are doing and should be disregarded

this is what people actually think and thats why you have people who know a bunch of vocab but cant use any of it to construct a few sentences that are connected to each other

dont be a guy who settles for being able to spot vocab in text without understanding how the sentences work and you just rewrite the grammar to english in your head willy nilly

The Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar uses romaji and was written by two native Japanese professors of linguistics.

This is a bit off-topic here, but here are some kanji resources anons may have missed

>RTK Reconstructed (keyword+radical breakdown -> kanji)
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1672767733
Instead of ridiculous mnemonics that are often harder to remember than the kanji themselves, learn only the absolute essentials. Using the meaning, and the radicals, draw the kanji.

When kanji become Mature, nail them home by learning vocab that uses them.

In essence, it's the "vocab" approach, except with a warm-up period for each kanji. Also unlike Heisig, there is no defined "order" (you can filter by the kanji in your media if you want).

>Kodansha Learner's Course
It's a book that I think also shits on Heisig pretty hard. You're gonna pay $25 though. The main idea is to learn the meaning of kanij, a mnemonic/story, and at least 1 vocab that uses it. It's still pretty new but I think this will eventually become a new standard recommendation.

its no more complicated than just utilizing the wealth of self study resources out there, some of which are in the op, as well as getting as much immersion as you can with regards to human interaction, on or offline

time spent with people who can generate casual and correct japanese who can then also give you feedback in realtime is more valuable than anything else, though you still need to invest a lot of time into self study with text resources and exercises to have a good balance

Pretty surprising, honestly. There also lots of Japanese restaurants ran by native Japanese with Japanese patrons.

>>
>>138766107
nitroplus, crankin out high lit since '96

i dont think anyone with real creds to categorize vns will ever do it so its probably a fools endeavor from the start

i think it would be better to say that all adult content vns (and nearly all vns in general) are something you should stay away from until you can read the equivalent of some young adults literature which are for more mainstream audiences

so you should probably shift all those vns over to start at 5 so they are sufficiently far away from yotsubato, and then edit those and go from there
>>
>>138766442
Are they really that hard? Or are upper difficulty VNs just not that much more difficult than lower/medium difficulty VNs aside from vocab and kanji? I didn't really get the impression they were that hard jumping straight from the 2nd volume of Yotsuba into Flyable Heart (which is around the same level as Fureraba). The beginning sucked, but I still understood almost all of it and was reading at a comfortable pace by the time I was almost done with the common route.

Or did I just get taken along for a ruse cruise?
>>
>>138766442
Can 5 even properly judge it then? Maybe a system of 10?
>>
>>138766210
>I might wait until I lose some weight so that at least my first impression isn't "weird chubby autist who approached out of the blue"

i mean even if youre skinny you can run into this problem. approaching a family is probably a little weird but why not just be like hey i run this trail a lot maybe you guys have seen me but do you mind if we talk a little bit? im learning japanese and i dont get many opportunities to talk to people. tell them youre learning just purely as a hobby if thats the reason to enjoy various media. japan does have the 2nd largest music industry in the world so its reason enough

if things go well you could have new people to talk to when you go out a few times a week. if they tell you to fuck off then thats that and its not like they are gonna kill you
>>
>>138766654
10 would be better if it's having a VN for each piece number and not just adding some more examples for each number. the jump to each number does seem fairly big, though.
>>
>>138766582
i mean heres the thing. theres reading words on a page and theres understanding what the writer is trying to say

vns are riddled with tons of cultural in jokes, references, net culture in jokes (note this is not the same thing as memes), and the list goes on. its an entertainment medium for jaded adults for the most part and this is reflected in writing quite a bit

saying you shouldnt read them until you can do x is wrong but it is true that theres going to be much reduced takeaway value for you if you havent been reading and in the mix so to speak for long

>>138766654
i dont really advocate having a number rating system for titles by difficulty because i think thats actually pretty subjective. adult level reading is adult level reading across the board when it comes to literature. theres stuff out there about unique kanji in a title and whatnot and i think thats also not particularly great at telling you anything

Less so, though.

My whole body right now undoubtedly screams "not healthy". I'm walking, not running, because I'd quickly vomit if I didn't build up some stamina first. Even walking leaves me sore. My posture is probably poor, too. It's about more than just weight (my weight is just a bit above average; noticeably chubby, but not obese).

When you're around unhealthy people, your inclination is that you want to get away from them. Maybe it's a survival instinct thing or something. Either way, I'd rather not lose people who could be valuable friends in a few months on account of having approached them too early.

>>
>>138767458

It's just reality.

70% of our communication is non-spoken. Health and physique effects one's body movements significantly. If a healthy guy with good posture and good strong muscles and organs puts his hands in his pockets and looks off somewhere, it communicates a different message to onlookers than if a fat guy with poor posture and weak muscles and organs puts his hands in his pockets and looks off somewhere. The former message is undoubtedly a more positive one to view as an outsider. The only way to give off the former message is to make one's body healthy.

It effects our verbal communication, as well. One's weight both influence's one's voice and their ability to speak without losing their breath, which has a direct effect one one's charisma.

No matter how much political correctness attempts to make fat people bashing off limits, this is ingrained in us on an instinctual level. Attempting to reject it will only result in a cognitive dissonance and a series of double standards that will make you unhappy.
>>
>>138766582
Moege are often easier than video games or LNs. Everything is on a case by case basis.

Things like Oretsuba and Muramasa are leagues above your average moege in difficulty. But usually it's vocabulary that is a problem and not so much grammar.
>>
>>138766107
This is hilariously inaccurate and superficial. I don't understand why you think assigning arbitrary numbers to eroge while making use of a 'Yotsuba to Classical Japanese' scale is going to help anybody.

People interpret game difficulty differently. What could be a pitfall for you is not necessarily a pitfall for another person. If you actually want to make something useful, then compile a list of games you've already read and write about potential things that can be troublesome for readers to deal with.

And before you say this: Yes, Muramasa is more difficult than the average eroge - But there's no point unless you elaborate on what's difficult and point out solutions to tackling these problems.

Just scrap the list dude.

PoI is horrible. The last act is a complete trainwreck that disregards prior characterization (Ein's development from a killing machine to a normal girl) and plot points (Inferno not having so little activity that they can waste resources on a couple of runaways), and devolves into a complete idiot plot that only plays out like it does because there would be no conflict if the characters were in-character. It's the second-worst VN that I've read, behind ONE.

The only Urobutcher work that I've liked is Gargantia.

It was the DVD game.

Still, I couldn't see Act 3 not being complete garbage. The conflict only happened as it did because the protagonist refused to say anything that wasn't completely callous to Cal, even while he was basically pissing himself with joy and relief in his monologue. There was no reason for him not to say anything, either, because breaking out of the cold assassin bullshit was basically the whole point behind his actions throughout the story. If he were acting in-character, the first thing that he would have done was tell Cal how overjoyed he was to see her alive (who was basically begging him to tell her that she was wrong), and there would have been no fight between the two. The three person team would have gone and shot the antagonist together, and that would have been the end of it. Instead, all he ever did was say "Cal..." and seemingly do everything in his power to guide the dialogue towards a shootout.

Didn't mean it in a hostile way if that's how it came across, my bad. If you meant how to know about [sound:], outside of looking at decks that have working audio, the Anki manual mentions it.

>>138769118
That shit's a ridiculous timesink when you're dealing thousands of cards.
You could export the deck into a spreadsheet and add [sound: to the beginning of the cell for the column and add ] to the end of the cell and then import that back into anki to update all of your notes.

How you do that will vary depending on the spreadsheet program you use (could probably just use the =CONCATENATE formula in excel and then copy the data in that new column over the old column or something), but if you actually have audio saved for all of your cards already and it just isn't working because the field just doesn't have the [sound:] thing, it'd save you a lot of time.
>>
>>138768046

for me, I had the same problem, so I just deleted the deck and reinstalled it because I only just barely started doing 2k/6k anyway
>>
>>138768046
Make a new user on Anki, import a fresh version of the deck, copy the front/styling/back there, switch back to the main user, and replace the front/styling/back with the one you just copied from the fresh deck.

No, you are wrong.
Sure, a carefully written up description of the kind of language used and what possible difficulties you might encounter for every VN would be more useful, but realistically that's never going to happen. With that in mind, a number capable of comparing different VNs is extremely convenient to have.
What do you mean by solutions to tackling these problems? The solution is simply to read easier stuff and work your way up until you reach the difficult stuff. To do this, you need a standard of comparison so you don't end up reading something difficult before something easy, and a scale such as this works very well.
tl;dr beginners should start with easy stuff and slowly raise the difficulty; for that purpose, this scale is useful.

My mined decks actually just used the Core 6k format. I cloned the Core 6k's "Japanese" format with a new card type: Japanese Mined. I changed the card type for cards that don't have the audio added to Japanese Mined, and added [sound:] around {{Vocabulary-Audio}}.

>realistically that's never going to happen

It'll never happen if you waste your time with assigning VNs with arbitrary numbers, yes.

>What do you mean by solutions to tackling these problems? The solution is simply to read easier stuff and work your way up until you reach the difficult stuff.

Looking at what specifically hinders you while you read and solving the issue. No amount of VNs that you'll read is going to fully prepare you for something like Oretsuba or Dies Irae and you're going to have to be figuring it out on the spot while you read it.

>To do this, you need a standard of comparison so you don't end up reading something difficult before something easy

Like I keep saying, arbitrary numbers don't say anything about the game that you're reading. What exactly can I infer about it besides some how supposedly difficult some anonymous person felt about the game in relation to whatever he read? It doesn't tell me anything concrete about WHAT somebody can have trouble with.

If you want to go with your own inaccurate chart then by all means. Don't deceive beginners into thinking that they'll be successful so long as they follow it when the notion of difficulty is so subjectively applied in the first place.

>It'll never happen if you waste your time with assigning VNs with arbitrary numbers, yes.
No, it'll never happen regardless. Look at how many VN difficulty descriptions we have in the reading list, and that's been around for years. People just don't have the time or desire to make detailed, useful write-ups, so this is the best we're going to get.

>Looking at what specifically hinders you while you read and solving the issue.
This clarifies nothing without specifying what you mean by "solving the issue". The best way is to read something easier and work up. If the next thing you read is always slightly more difficult than the last one, you'll never be overwhelmed, and you'll eventually reach the highest tier.

>What exactly can I infer about it besides some how supposedly difficult some anonymous person felt about the game in relation to whatever he read? It doesn't tell me anything concrete about WHAT somebody can have trouble with.
No, it doesn't, nor does it claim to. Its job is to provide a way to compare VNs by difficulty, not anything else.

>Don't deceive beginners into thinking that they'll be successful so long as they follow it when the notion of difficulty is so subjectively applied in the first place.
But they will be. Or are you saying a beginner should start with VN of difficulty >3? No, of course not, a beginner should start with a VN of Hanahira-tier difficulty, when completed, move up to Fureraba-tier difficulty, and so on and so forth. Which is exactly what the chart offers.

Honestly, you can't read anything without ever having to stop until your vocab is 10k+ and your understanding of grammar is solid.

N1 is basically the "good for you, you can now hold a comfortable conversation so long as the topic isn't too specialized" line. In other words, fluency.

Don't wait until then to start reading, though. Reading is a large part of what will get you over that line.

An inability to see through the literal to the abstract meaning beneath is a medical sign of autism, and the single largest shortcoming that turns autists who don't adjust properly into walking social trainwrecks.

He's asking about the levels that the JLPT represents. For example, at 3500 words and 1k kanji, or at the level tested by JLPT N3 level (too lazy to look up the exact number, and don't have them memorized off hand, but we'll say that this is what's tested by JLPT N3; it's kind of irrelevant to the point), would he be able to read Dragonball without having to stop and look things up? That's what he's asking.

To which the answer is, of course, no. A native third grader could easily pass the JLPT N1, and even works of fiction aimed at kids assume that you know that much.

>similar to the beginning of this post if someone is foolish enough to think being able to pass a test means youre ready for all the possibilities in the language, they deserve every bit of the bitter truth they will inevitably find

Common sense is grown from observation and experience. Foreign language learning is not a matter of common sense to someone who's neither lived around foreign language learning nor partaken in it himself. Why do people fall into the trap of just going through grammar guides, dumb CDs, and vocabulary lists for years on end? It sound stupid to us, of course, but to someone who doesn't know where to begin, "use learning materials to reach fluency" sounds like a solid course of action.

How would you have any way of knowing, as a complete beginner, that 6000 words is nothing? I mean, you can probably figure out that you know more than 6000 words in your native tongue, but how much of your total vocabulary makes up everyday speech, and how much just sits dormant for years on end? You wouldn't normally think about it. Kanji count is even worse, because it's a completely foreign thing to a native English speaker.

The idea that a higher level proficiency test will indicate a high level of knowledge, again, sounds pretty solid when you don't have the knowledge base to know otherwise. Of course, anyone who's gotten up to N2 level knows that N2 is not enough.

>>138774057

Maybe on account of kanji, but they'd be fine with the vocab and grammar knowledge. That's okay, though, they'll be up to snuff on the kanji within a few years, too.

Compelling content that's a low enough level that you can mostly understand it but a high enough level that you're actively finding new vocab and making progress. Yotsuba -> Flyable Heart -> Other moege seems to be a common pattern. Just be aware that Flyable Heart's common route is a drag most of the time.

>I have a high tolerance to moetrash so it's fine.
Alright, then go ahead and move on to Flyable Heart if you've read through Yotsuba. The beginning is going to feel like a big leap up in difficulty and you'll probably be leaning on the dictionary a lot more often / having to look up grammar more often, but you'll improve massively throughout the common route.

Use this to make mining a lot easier. Chii-trans or something would probably work too, but if you use that I'd recommend keeping the grammar syntax highlighting and furigana off.
http://pastebin.com/raw/DgZ84qwk
>>
>>138776672
I dislike VNs so I can't say much for stuff like flyable heart but Yuru Yuri is a pretty easy manga to read I believe, also Tonari no Seki is quite easy and also amazing, it'll still feel like a massive bump up from Yotsuba though as the other guy said but don't get too discouraged it's supposed to feel impossible
>>
>>138776724
>Use this to make mining a lot easier.
So it's essentially a slower yet more thorough alternative to machine translation?
>>
>>138776817
Really early on when you're looking up almost every word, I guess you could kind of compare it to machine translating in a way? Though it's still you interpreting the grammar and stuff. That setup is designed to make it extremely easy to make new cards for new vocab while at the same time not holding your hand at all by giving you furigana or grammar highlighting like Chii-trans does by default. If it's still way too difficult there might be some merit in using Chii-trans for the first third or so of the common route to get in the swing of things as long as you accept that it sometimes parses stuff incorrectly.

It has a pretty decent rating for a moege on EGS. If it were actually as bad as he's saying it is it'd at least have a low score on both vndb and EGS to reflect that, but it doesn't.

Is anyone here good enough to reliably listen to Gaki no Tskai raw? I feel like listening to a bunch of old male kansaiben comedians is somewhat a peak of listening comprehension, although the fact there's always subtitles helps a lot

If you actually live in the Kansai region, go to the countryside, and pop in a small, cheap izakaya, that's way more difficult than understanding gaki.
Also, the peak of Japanese listening comprehension is understanding everything from an ossan at a countryside onsen kek.

Maybe if he wants to ruin it. Leyline is not as easy as Flyable Heart and part of what makes Flyable Heart good as a beginner VN is the common route can be a throwaway to get better with. Plus Leyline is a mystery rather than a regular moege (granted Flyable Heart has a decent amount of plot in the routes too), so missing stuff in Leyline is a much bigger deal.

If he's not going to go with Flyable Heart, you should at least recommend another moege that's better and is similarly easy.

There are different types of the kansai dialect, and the Japanese 'nigspeak' (kinda like this expression) is not especially about the words and grammar. Most of the time the biggest problem is old males just cannot open their fuckin mouth when speaking. Also, sometimes the intonation is fucked up (north touhoku is much worse than kansai at this).
It can happen, that they don't understand kansaiben, but completely not understand? Well, maybe it was a really short sentence, or just a word.
When a man from Osaka go work for a company in Tokyo, he will use the standard Japanese. But his intonation remain the same, and this fucks up the head of a Tokyo man.

I don't think this is too helpful. If a word is suspended it's because the user wants it suspended, or anki suspended it due to leech activities. I think only in very narrow situations would that be useful, and in most it would be negative.

normal mining requires a lot of time overhead. With rikai you have to ensure you are importing the right definition (and if you want to import more than one definition, good luck), and with that batch import thing by the same guy it's even worse (batch my ass, it requires confirmation for basically every card to disambiguate, and, again, NO WAY to put multiple definitions on a card).

With this, I just ctrl+c anywhere, get a dictionary, "import" the card, and if I don't want to read any given day, I just unsuspend the next 15 cards, and I get the 15 most common words I don't know dumped in my new queue.

Yeah you can. All the definitions are listed in one entry and that entry is what's added. The only time you can't is one 1 kanji represents multiple different *words*, and those are fairly rare cases not worth noting.
>the 80000 generated word list takes little upfront time, then you just import it and you're all set.
It's not about the time of making it, but the pain in the ass of having to deal with it. You even had to write a script to manage it. Hella inconvenient. And the only benefit in the end is not having to press R? I don't see any world where that's beneficial. Furthermore, you loose a lot of data from that. You don't see how many words you add a day, because you're suspending. That sort of thing.
>>
>>138779455
You could use an EPWING dictionary that includes multiple definitions as one entry if you don't like the default dictionary. For the special cases where a word with the same spelling/pronunciation has multiple entries though, it's really only a matter of a few seconds to copy the second entry and paste it into the field on the card, but that's the sort of thing that happens maybe once a week or two, adding audio that Rikai doesn't have takes longer than that (and even that's due to a lot of the clips on Forvo not being properly edited to remove the excess silence/room noise before and after the pronunciation), and that's not something your method is going to be able to get around either.

If your method works for you, that's cool and all, but I don't really see the point is all. It's not any more efficient than the current method and it's not as flexible or robust. And no audio is pretty much an immediate deal breaker for me. Maybe someone else will want to use it though, but if the multi entry thing is that big of a problem that's probably just something to bring up with Rikai's dev.

Utilizing the clipboard monitoring feature of Furigana Inserter and the autoclipboard feature of ITHVNR together with an html file that automatically scrolls in order to basically texthook directly into Firefox, meaning mining is basically click/tab to Firefox and press R. Only downside is it's not possible to turn off the furigana without uninstalling mecab and there isn't really another extension that does exactly what the clipboard monitoring function does. Someone could probably fork Furigana Inserter and remove everything except for the clipboard monitoring feature and then re-up to github or something though.

That is a discussion that's pedantic, yet meaningful. The dictionary definition of "learn" is
>gain or acquire knowledge of or skill in (something) by study, experience, or being taught.
so "learned" would imply you gained or acquired knowledge in a language by studying, experience, or being taught, but are on longer doing so. With that in mind, I conclude Japanese can be considered "learn" when you cease actively studying it, yet are also proficient enough to use Japanese effectively. Therefore, having "learned" Japanese does not necessarily imply mastery, or that there's nothing left to learn, rather just that learning has ceased.

Your timing doesn't matter as long as you actually learn and remember the kana and kanji.
Go at your own pace and you'll be fine. Quitting is another story though.

Hiragana I knew inside and out, no problem there.
Kanji, I obviously didn't know thoroughly, but at least I could figure out the radicals.
With Katakana, there was this limbo where I was reading through Japanese texts, but katakana characters were always tripping me up.
>confuse ソ and ン
>confuse メ and ナ
>confuse ワ and フ
>confuse サ and セ
>confuse ヘ and ハ
>confuse ホ and オ
>not know what the hell ヌ is
Also some other stuff I don't even remember, and general slowness in reading katakana.

If you're in for the long haul, just sit down and work on your fundamentals. Get your kana in order, establish a good system for kanji, set up some listening practice and keep massaging the grammar in.

Skimp on any of those, and you'll be singing the できない blues instead of consuming delicious raws.

メヌタクケス

These always blurred together for me.

Trying to 'perfect' your hiragana and katakana recognition is useless because you're going to remember vocab words as a whole. You don't read the katakana one by one. When I see テキサス I immediately know what it is because I've seen it before. There's zero change of mixing up any words because I know that there's no such word called テキサヌ or テキサク. Being able to write all the kana from memory is enough.

>didn't you know that you need 50000 words to be fluent
You don't, 20k - 25k is enough. It works that way in other languages too, you know..

Deal with it. Why write it with three kanji when you can write it with one?

I never studied katakana and just learned them all from seeing them in content I wanted to read and having to look them up over and over again
