>>
>>138728726
>I checked before I made my thread
The catalog takes a while to update, so this sort of stuff is bound to happen when you have multiple competing OPs.
>>
Shit like this is why we use a single image since it won't let you create multiple threads with the same image. Stuff like varying OP images is for when a new thread isn't made literally instantly like here.

Anyways, quit talking about it and just move on. Don't give them even more reason to ban us by devolving into meta shit.
>>
>>138728658
My bad then. But my point still stands, unless you got a study backing it up, I don't think such a claim could be made by anybody.

>4 threads
This is why we use the same image for the OP so you don't get duplicates even if 10 people try to make the thread at the same time
>>
>>138728857
DJT didn't used to have new threads made literally within 5 seconds of the old thread dying, so this wasn't really an issue before since the threads usually took anywhere from 5 minutes to a few hours for a new one to pop up, meaning varying images wasn't a problem in those cases.

I'm taking my very first baby steps to learning this goddamn language. Or at least learning how to read it.

What is a good "beginner goal?" Are there simple documents where you can say, "if you can comprehend this, you're on the right track?" I need material.

Does he think the mods are going to go "okay this one guy is being annoying on purpose so your threads are banned now"? Someone should tell him about the filter feature or show him generals that are worse than this one.

I wouldn't call any more attention to it than we already are though. It's enough to let people know it's happening / that he's spammed over 20-30 threads in the past couple hours so they can watch and report. We should try to keep this thread on-topic.

He can get his student visa endorsed his school, allowing him to live in an environment of total immersion for as long as he attends and stays in good academic standing.

FYI, these schools are not your average liberal arts classes. These are intensive schools designed to take people from 0 to N1 in 2 years with a focus on preparation to enter Japanese college. You "graduate" by passing N1 / EJUA.

And it will be completely free, using the military's college fund that will pay nearly 100% of the cost, including room & board.

Yeah, sounds like a really shit deal.

I started memorizing Kanji when I finished the JLPT N5 deck and was working on the N4 deck and realized the Kanji were too similar and I was getting confused. I felt I needed to learn some Kanji in order to progress.

So, I'm currently working my way through 常用漢字 with Anki flashcards (about 1100 in now). I've read that at least a few of them are "obscure" or rarely used Kanji. Can someone with more experience chime in as to how useful memorizing all the 常用漢字 is going to be?

Yeah language schools in Japan are the real deal.

The only argument I would propose against them doesn't actually have to do with how effective they are. Rather, to me, enjoying the process of learning is more important than fast results. Studying independently for 2 years at your own pace studying material you want to will almost undoubtedly put you behind someone who went to a Japanese language school for 2 year. However, if you enjoy the process, you'll have a good time for those 2 years, immersed in compelling content and what you specifically want to learn, whereas someone in language school will undoubtedly have a bad time (just like any intensive school, really) with a lot of homework and uncompelling content. So, from my view, a language school is not good for someone wanting a good time and not minding going slower, but it's good for someone who wants to have a bad time but learn faster.

Anki introduces 20 cards day one, not 1,000, and slowly introduces 20 more, while keeping reviews of previously introduced cards low via SRS. I suggest you get over your distaste for flashcards because it's pretty important to use anki in my opinion.
>>
>>138741784
Does it pick 20 of them randomly or is it some kind of weighted decision based on how difficult it is to read? I'd like to have something that starts me off with basic shit like numbers, simple shapes like person, big etc and getting harder the further you progress.

Like I don't want it to teach me fucking book or come before I even learn tree.

>>138741826
That entirely depends on what deck you choose. Each deck has a preset order with the option to follow that order or randomly choose cards. Core2k/6k optimized, the most commonly recommended deck, has an order based on kanji introduction, aiming to introduce simple/common kanji first and then build off that while introducing more and more kanji. Coincidentally, Core2k/6k does start off with numbers and days (though those are actually the hardest words to learn in my opinion due to janky as fuck readings).

However, you should get out of the mindset of learning simple stuff before complex stuff. Everything used frequently in Japanese is of equal important, and because you're an adult human with the intelligence of one, starting off learning like a child doesn't really help you. So you'll see stuff like "surgery" before, maybe, "purple". That's just gonna happen. There's thousands upon thousands of words, all just about equally important. You've got to learn some before others, and some are going to be more adult and complex. Not to mention that linear difficult is pretty much impossible to have in a language.
>>
>>138741944
>It's wasting time to learn the language like the Japanese do, starting with simple shapes first and having those shapes progress into others, like learning tree first, then book, then come etc.

>>
>>138741974
Japanese people don't learn kanji that are easier to write first. They learn kanji with simpler meanings first because they start learning them as children.

My suggestion? Try WaniKani. First 3 levels or something are free. You'll learn a hundred or so words and a few dozen kanji. That'll be enough to know if you wanna keep using it. Ultimately I think WaniKani gives you something like 2000 kanji and 6000 vocab words if you decide to pay for it and go through all of the levels. It's not bad.

If you just want Kanji, download Anki, download the NihongoShark Kanji deck and start plowing through them. It takes 107 days to go through all of the Jouyou kanji at 20 per day. It's quite doable.

So the question is move on or read a chapter of a manga at a even slower pace?

Would be nice to hear some input on how other anons handled that.
>>
>all these bathrooms
do we really need so many words for such a simple room
>>
>>138743874
Look up every single detail (if it's as easy as finding it in the index or simply googling it, more obscure stuff is a definite ignore at lower levels). If you look it up now you won't have to later. That simple.
>>
>>138743874
I think really trying your best to get all of it is more beneficial, and will result in you improving faster, but it also could potentially be discouraging and irritating

Just skipping it and moving on is also beneficial in the sense that you'll be exposed to more shit in a shorter period of time, and will potentially have a more fun time doing it
>>
>>138743874
Obviously move the fuck on

Why make it harder for yourself? It's going to be annoying as fuck.
>>
>>138744059
>Why make it harder for yourself
To learn Japanese dude
>>
>>138744090
You're going to reach that goal as long as you don't give up. What makes you feel like giving up? Compulsively looking up grammar terms even though you already understand the sentence, excessive flash cards, trying to grind through multiple decks at once and more. The choice is simple, really.
>>
>>138743921
Sometimes I am not really sure how to look up stuff because it is just stupid slang the character uses and that throws me off.

>>138743974
>but it also could potentially be discouraging and irritating

Yes looking up everything can get boring really fast, maybe I will look up stuff in one chapter and skip looking up things in the next?
It surely will work out somehow.
Probably.

It seems I always choose the hard options.

There's really a balance to be struck here. You should certainly be looking some things up, but if you're slowing yourself down to the point where you're only consuming a fraction of the content you otherwise could be, you're probably doing more harm than good.

If he has to look up so much grammar that he's moving at a fraction of the pace, then he's so knee deep in beginner level that he should be spending more time reading about grammar than reading.
>>
>>138744311
Nah, even intermediates will have lots of problems with grammar when moving from easy manga to LNs/VNs/books for example.
>>
>>138734921
Making up your own mnemonics works, if you can recognize the components. It's not like making up kanji mnemonics is some superhuman task that only someone with years of specialized training can do.
>>
>>138744362
I would not call those people intermediates. Having trouble wrapping around a sentence? Sure, happens to everyone. But flat-out not knowing grammar and having to look it up, to the point of spending more time reading about grammar than reading text? Hella beginner.
>>
>>138744311
I need around 90 minutes (give or take 10) for a whole volume of a manga.
With looking up grammar points it easily skyrockets to way more, I already think im slow.

I think the actual usual equivalent term is 俺の嫁.
>>
>>138744485
What a crazy idea, that speeding through text you barely understand is faster than actually attempting to learn what the text within means.
>>
>>138744431
It's not as if once you get out of the beginner stage you automatically know every Japanese grammar point in existence, there are still plenty of grammar rules that give intermediates problems, hell even in more advanced levels people have to look up grammar occasionally
>>
>>138744431
からというもの
そばから
がてら

Here are a bunch of N1 grammar words. Intermediates are not going to know these because a lot of them are used very sparingly. The meaning of sentences can be easily understood through context, but an intermediate might be compelled to look up all of these words.

Of course, if one is a beginner (which can be easily determined by what one is reading), clarifying all doubts with a dictionary is a must.
>>
>>138744573
>there are still plenty of grammar rules that give intermediates problems
The grammar points which give intermediates problems can easily be googled and are not the majority of what they see.
>occasionally
Yes. Occasionally, as in not spending the majority or even a significant amount of time doing so.
>>138744595
>because a lot of them are used very sparingly.
And thus, it won't take a big chunk of time to research them, so what's the problem? They are simple to google and learn. It seems you and the other guy got the misconception that I'm saying you can't be intermediate unless you know all grammar. I'm not. I'm saying not knowing grammar points is a very minor issue for intermediates precisely because, as you say, the rare stuff is used sparingly. And is nonetheless easy to learn if they google it, and not time consuming. Where's the problem?
>>
>>138744525
It is not like I don't understand, it is more like I don't get the fine small details, maybe I should just read more and look up stuff.
It is a marathon not a race at least I like to think so.
>>
>>138744794
>And is nonetheless easy to learn if they google it, and not time consuming. Where's the problem?

Er, nobody said anything about spending more time looking up grammar than reading, just it getting annoying

And so on and so on. I beseech you, please read the discussions you participate in.
>>
>>138744801
>it is more like I don't get the fine small details,
I.e. you don't understand and fill in the blanks with guessing. If you have to look up so much grammar that time spent reading skyrockets, I can only imagine how much you're not understanding.

Whoops. It's 1am and my brain's not working.

This is a pretty meaningless argument anyway so I'll just let it end here.
>>
>>138745012
>This is a pretty meaningless argument anyway
I dunno, I think it's actually meaningful. Not sure why you'd call it meaningless. Is it not an important choice, whether to ignore unknown material or whether to look it up?
>>
>>138745203
No, I was talking about the intermediates or beginners argument.

As for whether the original poster should skip or look up stuff, if he's the guy who's reading manga, I would advise that he just look up everything for now and slow down on it once he feels like he has a better grasp on the language or when it gets unbearably annoying.

Those are certainly common enough for intermediates to know them and recognize them in reading, as is most N1 grammar. Now, actually knowing the nuances well and being able to distinguish them from similar forms is a different story, and intermediates may not be able to do that.

Reading an eroge for one character is a recipe in disappointment.

In fact, reading it for any number of characters is a recipe for disappointment if you don't like the writing itself.
>>
>>138745305
>Now, actually knowing the nuances well and being able to distinguish them

That's exactly what an intermediate would look them up for.
>>

Reading eroge without liking the writing, playing games without liking the gameplay, watching movies without liking the cinematography, going through life without liking living. Is this not what we are all destined to do, in the end? Only death and suffering are real, all else is a fleeting dream.
>>
>>138745341
This.
It's unfortunate but true that even if you're bad at Japanese, you can still tell when writing is bad, for so often it's not the prose itself but rather the pacing characterization that fail spectacularly, and you don't need language to notice that. Boring text is real though, I'm playing Demons Souls in Japanese, the Japanese text has had "ありがとう" and "助かった" four different times each, and while the English has been different (You have my thanks, you're a life saver, etc) the Japanese hasn't.
>>138745391
>I already went through Tae kims already
It's commonly said that Tae Kim is just beginner grammar. I myself had a lot of problems with grammar until I went through the whole DOJG (w/ help from the anki deck).
>>
>>138741093
I don't get it, are you saying this is two days worth of reps?
>>
>>138745359
No, because that level of nuance isn't something you even think about when reading, and looking them up in EDICT does nothing to improve that level of understanding.

For a clearer example, look at the EDICT definitions for ずくめ, まみれ, etc and compare to what actual grammar resources say about them. For ずくめ in particular it's vague as fuck and definitely doesn't make it clear that it is usually used for colored clothing
>>

One of the Core decks has like 5 cards for every word. The one in the OP setup guide is generally preferred if you're not looking to get into conversation right away I think, and even then I'd personally probably still go with it.

I'm at the point where I need to start on Grammar, Kanji and Vocabulary. I read the new guide, the old guide, the /int/ guide and the revision, but I still don't know what to do. So, what should I do?

Protip: reading/listening a lot would give you much more natural ways to express yourslef. It's not about age, what matters is the way you learn, i.e. by actually having contact with the raw language, not with some dry textbooks.

Each choice is fine, it's up to you to try them out and stick with what works for you

You what? It's not like people telling you what they think is best is going to alleviate the burden of choice from you. There's not a royal road of which methods to use. You've GOT to decide for yourself. If you just follow what people say to do, there's just as good a chance of long-term holding yourself back/failure as you would if you just tried them out yourself. You must be misunderstanding something. For example, that guy just recommended to learn kanji from core. Well guess what? Tons of people have a miserable time doing that, and end up going to RTK and being regretful they didn't do RTK first. That COULD be you. You won't know until you try. You can't avoid the choice.

Let's say that I do try each possibility out, like you suggest. So how will I know if a resource is the "right" one (or "false" one) ? What if my judgement fails me? When do I have tried out enough to judge as objectively as possible? Please don't say it will just click, I'm a human, not a clicking machine.

You're right it's impossible, I guess you have no choice but to make the choice we tell you to.
Do Rosetta Stone, it's the best way to learn Japanese.
>>
>>138753779
Well, it's pretty simple. You try out each method and see which one works best for yourself. At the end of the day, they're just means to an end. If you follow one of the resources, you'll be on the good path anyway. It's not like one of the resources is inherently better. Stop being so insecure anon, choosing the perfect method and learning about the process of learning Japanese instead of learning actual Japanese is a beginner's mistake. Don't fall for this trap.
>>
>>138753779
If the resource is listed on the guide, it's a right one. The question is just finding which one you like the most, surely you can tell which one you like more. Open imabi, and it's too dry? Open Genki and it's too focused on classwork? Open Tae Kim and whaddya know, it's neither dry nor has classwork, you like it the most. Like that. It's not really a long process.
>>
>>138753854
Used in conjuction with WaniKani, there's literally nothing about the Japanese language that he won't learn. Make sure to get the most expensive options for both. The more expensive it is, the easier it is to become fluent. Trust me.

This is something all of us past the beginner stage have gone through, anon. Call it a rite of passage if you want. You've just gotta try a few different methods out and see what works for you. If you want someone else to make the decision for you, then just try brute forcing vocab with the Anki Startup deck, if you have trouble, pick up the Kangxi radicals deck from the CoR and do that on the site, and if you're still having trouble, then consider a form of individual kanji study. Just don't meander around on the same method for too long if it's not working that well for you. I wish I did RTK a lot sooner than I did.

There is no "best" method for everyone, but there are at least popular/common methods that have shown to be effective or "best" to various people in the threads, be it just doing vocab without studying kanji or radicals or anything, doing RTK, doing KD, doing one of those kanji decks like the one that's in the All in One Learners Package in the CoR, doing the WK Anki deck (not the site) etc. You just have to try them out and see what works best for you.

How do you get that furigana inserter add-on not to insert furigana? To work with ITHVNR. I certainly didn't install any dictionary and I see no options to turn it off.

>and if you're still having trouble, then consider a form of individual kanji study.
I'd like to add that if you would like to write by hand (I certainly do), then studying kanji in an orderly fashion like RTK really is a must.

You got like 3 very good advice that spoonfeed you everything and that is how you phrase your replies?
How young are you anyway? Since you have a "busy life", it would imply that you would have done trial and error plenty of times in your "real" life then. Just do that.

Sorry mate, your writing sounds like a spoiled, entitled young individual that aren't capable yet to make independent decisions.

You might as well just give up now. With that kind of attitude, I doubt you can learn japanese far. If I'm wrong, well good for you.

Did you look at the FAQ in the pastebin?
>Q: Furigana Inserter is displaying furigana and I don't want it to. How do I disable it?
>A: As stated in the instructions, Furigana Inserter relies on Mecab to generate the furigana, so uninstall/disable Mecab if you want to get rid of it. I don't know of another addon that does what Furigana Inserter's clipboard monitoring feature does, so that's probably the only solution for now.

If someone who's knowledgeable enough wants to edit the extension to strip out everything except for the clipboard monitoring feature so that having Mecab installed won't be an issue, they can probably do that and upload it to github/share it here.

I didn't set automatic load so I didn't see that.

Still, there is a big difference between trying A first, found out that it's not working, and then asking others opinion about option B,C,D compared to asking to be spoonfed everything from the get-go without having ever try anything first and have no opinions about anything in the guide.
At least throw a question with some hints of inclination like "Should I do Tae Kim and Anki at the same time? I think doing both it's too much for me" or specific question like "Which KD deck is the best?".

Something to show that he read and have priorities mate.
>"Hey guys, I'm busy, spoonfeed me the best way to learn moonspeak"
