Unexplained as of yet. They're listed as missing. Maybe they were in the digital world when the gate closed, and that's when they were defeated by Alphamon. So the 1 kids outside the digital world wouldn't know about their defeat, just that they're dealing with something in the digital world for a year, like what happened to them in 1. So from the point of view of the adventure kids:

Takeru's "Aitsu" to him was just a result of his character flaw being his REMOVE DARKNESS persona. Everyone else called him Ichijouji-kun or Ichijouji. Notice how in 02 nobody called him Ichijouji-kun when they knew he was the Kaiser, before he reformed.

If you're coming from Cyber Sleuth I'd say Tamers or Savers would be more up your alley, as they focus more on digimon causing trouble in the human world.
Tamers is a slower series with more focus on characters and probably the most effort in making the digital world and digimon a bit more realistic.
