I think of Mt. Ebott as sort of like Aokigahara: people go there to die.
However, if you're running around the mountain trying to find a good spot to off yourself, you might fall down the hole and Undertale ensues.
Frisk ends up finding the will to live (determination) in every ending but Genocide.

The main reason I think this is because of that one line about Shyren's sister falling down. I've never really heard someone referring to dying like that.

'Fallen down' is just a term monsters use for when they are about to die for whatever reason, they go into a coma until they turn into dust. It's the same state all the monsters used for the determination experiments were in, they needed monsters who were going to die because they were trying to preserve souls after death.

Asgore puts the bodies of the fallen humans in the coffins in the catacombs and stores their souls in the glass containers, we understand that, but think of the implication of the revelation that Frisk and the first fallen child are different humans, and that the coffin with the red soul previously had Chara’s mummified corpse in it until Toriel took it out and buried it.

There’s not a coffin built or ready for the new human, Frisk, there.

This means:
A: after killing the final human, Frisk, Asgore would absorb all the souls and destroy the barrier, and leave Frisk’s body to rot without a tomb or mummification, having everyone wishing to leave the underground through the main exit to walk through the room the humans body was, as there’s no other place to put it nearby with no coffin or tomb.

Or

B: Asgore intended to put the body of this final random kid in the used coffin/tomb of his adopted child, and then either leave the label with the wrong name on it, or just put on a new one, and have the heart colored whatever the color of the soul of this kid ended up being, or he somehow knew that the kid had a red heart.

Also, he had the coffins in the catacombs arranged by color of the soul and not chronologically, with the coffin that had his adopted child with the rest of the dead humans. This means every time a new human died he had to shuffled and reorganize those massive entombed coffins and really hope he didn’t get a repeat colored soul.

GoatDad needs some serious therapy, or get a collecting and displaying hobby for something other than the mummified corpses of humans he ordered executed

I've been sort of working on this headcanon, it's not fully formed and I don't want to force it but here's what I've got so far:

Frisk's parents were going through a difficult divorce so Frisk ran away to Mt. Ebott where people are known to disappear.

Feeling like an unwanted burden they instantly form a bond with Toriel.

Frisk is an only-child and always wanted siblings, someone they might feel solidarity with during the divorce. Upon meeting Sans and Papyrus, Frisk immediately trusts the two to guide them.

When Alphys asks whether you think Asgore and Toriel will get back together it reflects Frisk's acceptance. Will they accept their parents' divorce and move forward in life or will they hold onto the past and live in denial.

When Toriel presents you with the choice to stay with her or go back that's also symbolic for Frisk's independence. Will they believe in their own self-worth or remain dependent on others.
