This is the year where Haas will sink or swim. Last year they had Ferrari making their car, this year they have new rules and a totally new car to make without Ferrari assistance, they couldn't even make the brake by wire work last year, Charlotte is mostly turnleft engineering and the little aero and composite talent there is at Charlotte is very busy building IMSA DPis

is it just me or does the 2017 Manor look a lot like the 2016 Haas/2015 Ferrari(which were essentially the same car)?

I know they had ex-Ferrari guys in their aero department so the influence could've come from there

The latest team joining the sport and still surviving is Sauber (1993). It has been 25 years since then. How old is Grand Prix racing? 100 years from the first British Grand Prix at Brookland. This is alarming.

Mansell is probably 5. You'll see Berger because he's probably gonna be reversing while overtaking. No one else matters.

>Bernie Ecclestone has moved quickly to deny suggestions that he wants to set up a new series to rival F1 – and insists that he wouldn’t do anything to damage the championship he helped to build.

>The sport’s former CEO also suggested that his successor Chase Carey and Liberty have more freedom to push for change as in the past he was focussed on creating bigger profits for his shareholders. In contrast the new owners will be willing to put money back into the sport.

>In a statement issued to Reuters he said: “I wish to clear up the rumours that I am starting a series to compete against the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. I have built the Championship over the last near-50 years, which is something I am proud of, and the last thing I want is to see it damaged.

>“The new owner of the company will be able to carry out the administration of the company in a different way to the way I had, which was to produce financial results for the shareholders, the normal actions of a chief executive. This, I have done for the different shareholders over the last years and also when I owned 100 percent of the company.

>“I would have loved the luxury of what Chase Carey, the CEO, is able to do. I hope the F1 supporters appreciate this as Chase intends to put money back into the sport.”

>He added: “I am very touched by the support and thanks that I have received from the people that I have dealt with over the years.”

Where do you read "the shareholders made me", retard. He only states his responsibilities changed. Once his responsibility was to turn a profit for F1, then his responsibility was to turn a profit for the shareholders. The money that goes off to shareholders he has no control over to re-invest or otherwise use, clearly he enjoyed turning a profit being the sole owner much more seeing as he states he is jelly over that Libmedia gets to do that.

>>
>>73916590
Wankels only if they loosen the limits on how many engines teams can use a season. Those things wouldn't last long enough.

I would be ok with this though. Could make rotaries more worthwhile in consumer cars if they innovate something to reduce wear, emissions, clogging up the rotor housing and burning of oil.

I don't have a problem with current PUs other than teams having to nurse the engines to make them last which just makes the racing shit.
>>
>>73916577

So we're looking at heading back to the old sound this season?

>>73916590

Fuck off mate. The noise is shit. I want to go to formula 1, to hear formula 1 cars and have my ear drums blown apart.
>>
>>73916632
They last relatively long; problem was no one bothered to service them enough. If you mix oil in with the fuel, it helps a lot as well.

The 4 engines a year rule would be the main problem, but it's already a problem. I feel, if the engine restrictions weren't as stupid as they are, a 0.8l rotary turbo would be able to compete in both power and reliability in a season. Obviously it would start off poorly, because they're not being used in racing at that level, but it would be developed. Consider, they did win Le Mans, and the other cars in that race did well two. It did take them a while, but supposedly the engineers said the R26B in the winning car could run another 24 hours without fail by they're estimates.

>>73916640
>So we're looking at heading back to the old sound this season?
How much of a casual are you? They're not using rotaries you stupid cunt.
>>
>>73916590
>higher power for less displacement

lolno

Mazda measures a rotarys displacement over 1 revolution of the output shaft.
A reciprocating piston engine's displacement is measured over 2 revolutions of the output shaft.
>That's why people use the rough rule of thumb of doubling the rotarys displacement to compare it to a reciprocating piston engine.

The reason we measure a reciprocating piston engine over 2 revolutions of the output shaft, is that it takes that long for each working chamber to take a charge.
Meanwhile in a rotary, it takes 3 revolutions of the output shaft for all chambers to take a charge.

Someone's not being honest.
>protip: it's Mazda making excuses for the rotarys low as fuck torque output because of their oversquare design choice
>>
>>73916977
I didn't say Torque, I said Power.

And most of what you said is true, but it doesn't actually affect the output. An FD RX7 and JZA80 stock (when new), both get around ~230 rwhp on a dyno.

Separately, they're not gonna put a 12A in an F1 car. They're not BMW.
>>
>>73917421
>I didn't say Torque, I said Power.

You said power for less displacement.
"Less displacement" is bullshit.

A Mazda 13b is
1308cc as a 2 stroke
2616cc as a 4 stroke
3924cc as a wankel cycle

If you want to compare it to a reciprocating piston engine, which you have with your "less displacement" comment, they you have to use the 2616cc figure.

If we look at the RX-8, the most advanced atmo rotary to enter production, in it's highest spec it made 232hp from the factory:
232hp / 2.616L = 88hp/L

Compare that to a Honda S2000, which was sold around the same time:
247hp / 1.997L = 123hp/L

How the fuck is that "higher power from less displacement" ?

Don't get me wrong, I fucking love rotarys (that's why I know so much about them), but the "only a 1.3 litre" argument is so fucking technically inaccurate it's not even funny.

I know it is the regulations mate. I'm basically saying I wish the regulations weren't like that because the FIA obviously knew that it would result in such rear wings. It doesn't make a difference regarding the fact that people will eventually get used to it though.

So many of these shitty and ugly solutions to aero were forced by the regulations, yet people got used to almost all of them visually over time. Even now, the high noses of 2012-2013 look a bit strange because I am so used to the curved low noses of the current era.

Maybe Force India can truly become the most based team on the grid (they almost are already) and have an actual colorful car, preferably GREEN'd

First of all, as a huge fan of everything you and your team have accomplished, let me offer to you my most sincere condolences for this terrible tragedy. That someone could do such a thing, and to such a hero, leaves me simply confounded. I cannot fathom what pettiness might drive a person to such a despicable act, and I fear that I would lose my sanity were I to try.

It pained me very deeply to hear the news, as I imagine it must have pained many of us - but I know that must be nothing compared to what you and your team must be feeling today. To that end, let me say this: take all the time you need. Of course your community will be anxiously awaiting any news you might have as to exactly what occurred, what it means, and what the consequences for the stream might be. However, we (and I do feel I speak for the community here) understand completely the situation you are in, and will wait patiently for as long as it takes until you are ready to communicate with us. We supported you before, we support you now, and we will support you always.

Finally, let me state what, I hope, will be painfully obvious to all of you: if there is anything - anything at all - that I or anyone else in this community can do to help you in this darkest hour, you simply MUST tell us. For you, you who have walked through fire to bring us a service we had no right to ask of you, I feel confident in saying we would march to the gates of Hell and back if it could provide you some small modicum of assistance.

We are a community. We work together, we play together, we watch together. Victories are sweetened and defeats softened because we did them together. You never abandoned us, so don't think for one second that any of us would ever abandon you. We stand with you, now and always, and we will gladly help you up when you stumble.

With love, respect, admiration, and hope, I remain

Sincerely yours,

/u/h3r4ld

What's the official /f1/ approved consensus of Ross Brawn? Absolutely based, a low-key shady cunt, bit of both or neutral?

Considering how long he spent with Flavio and at Ferrari it's clear he is obviously not the cleanest person. Also has a certain (pretty well-deserved) sense of mild arrogance about himself, so I hope he doesn't start testing out his power fantasy levels when in charge of F1.

Has anyone read his book btw? I got it a while back but still haven't gotten around to it. Is it good? Any key insights that might not have been common knowledge previously? I'll read it myself when I get some more time.

Why did no billionaire buy Manor? He could have marketed it as a way of saving hundreds of jobs.

Actually, a loss making F1 team could be a good tax write off, while still getting the value of having your company logo all over it.
>>
>>73923694

Well several were interested and all the deals fell through. Manor was probably being sold at a relatively low price as well. Without having any actual information the conclusions you can draw from this are that there were probably some quite big problems within the team. As in when they initially went into administration a lot of their personnel left and got jobs at other teams. So even after acquiring the team, it would require significant investments. Manor's facilities and general size of them also more or less guarantees they will never be anything higher than a lower-midfield without some significant expensive upgrades.

I also think that even billionaires are realizing it's not that beneficial to pay a fuckload just to operate a team that is likely going to be backmarker anyway. Pat Symonds said that the amount of work and design that went into a 2013 Manor would have basically got you a WDC car ten years earlier. Add to that equation behemoths like Mercedes which just have so much money and are practically unbeatable and the incredible complexity and cost of the current power units (which also acts as a massive barrier to entry for any engine manufacturer with F1 aspirations). Billionaires are likely to just go the Carlos Slim route, find a decentish driver from your country and give them a budget that will get them a decent drive and hope they are actually good enough to make it into a top team (e.g. Perez did make it into McLaren and is not totally impossible for him to drive a Ferrari in the future).

TLDR even if the initial cost of acquiring Manor was likely quite low, the immediate expenses in running, building, investing in growth etc etc were of such a caliber that even people with billions to spare thought it wasn't worth it, which probably says quite a bit about the state of F1. The last privateer to actually really win anything was Brawn and that was a total meme anyway and was heavily built upon the foundations of a non-privateer

Whoever is voting Ferrari should be shot.

They don't even deserve to be in the sport.

Liberty's #1 priority, in my opinion, is axing the special payment that Ferrari gets for being Ferrari.

If they want to stay in F1 they should earn their place. If they want to drop out then they should do so.

The likes of Virgin/Marussia/Manor and Lotus/Caterham show that there is clearly a lot of hunger out there to start new F1 teams. So I say call Ferrari's bluff, and if they drop out, let them. There will be young blood with fresh ideas to take their place, and bring some innovation and competition to F1. Otherwise it's not a competition, it's a fucking procession.

This should be done as soon as possible. I want F1 to be a competition again, with lots of little random teams springing up to vie for the championship, just like it used to be.

>he makes his own bad luck. that is, it's not luck, he's genuinely shit, makes poor decisions and fucks himself over
Just fuck yourself. In Monaco he was way ahead of Perez but the team called him into the pits and let Perez out, same in Britain. In Singapore he got crashed out. In Brazil he drove over debry and was over ten seconds ahead of Perez before the SC in the first stint alone.

>worse driver than perez
hardly, with bad luck he would have finished ahead, rest is just bait because you don't like him and he never drove with any of them, in fact, his junior record is one of the best out of all the guys you listed
>>
>>73944196
>In Brazil he drove over debry and was over ten seconds ahead of Perez before the SC in the first stint alone.
And then got a tyre failure which could have happened to anyone.
In GP2 and other seasons he drove with Grosjean who was older and already has a bunch of podiums he proved that he is a great driver. Perez has a bunch of podium as well and Hulk is at least as fast which he shows everytime he doesn't get screwed over, he is the unluckiest driver in F1 right now. End of.

https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/3a2nsk/alonso_f1s_current_top_3_drivers_are_hamilton/
Well, Alonso knows about F1, he knows that Hülkenberg got screwed over countless times, by teams, his strategists, other drivers on track, and that he deserves better and to win since he's one of the best, and instead of blaming him which only an idiot would he wishes him more success, simple human nature.

That or the Swedes, but they're never here anyway
>>
>>73944531
why does alonso hate vettel?
>>
>>73944760
he thinks vettel won his championships because rb were cheating with traction control and illegal blown diffusers, and that without cheating he would've won in '10 and '12

baseless allegations made even more baseless by Alonso's traction control at Renault
>>
>>73944760
Because he's mad about losing 2 WDC's to him, but also because he knows how limited Vettel's driving style is, and how much his mood in the cockpit affects his form. Whenever Vettel gets salty he fucks up. Happened in the RBR days (normally Wobbler choked first tho), and happens even more now he's in a Ferrari.

Also, it's a natural thought process to be suspect about hype. Vettel was hyped hard, and Alonso probably doesn't believe the hype. He seems pretty non-nonchalant about AMX as well. Also, you have to realise that, like most race drivers, Alonso is also mentally 16 years old.

Pretty sure Alonso has listed half the grid as the best drivers in his opinion

He also said if he ran a team he would hire Sainz and Vandoorne

He also said he would finish his career at Ferrari
He also said he wouldn't leave Ferrari
He also said that Vettel is literally an undeserving champion (true tbhlad)
He also said he didn't know about crashgate
He also said he considers 2008 Singapore a deserved victory

Basically he says a lot of shit and is amazingly prone to chimping out (e.g. walking up to Herbert on live TV and telling him that he is a 2x WDC and Herbert won fuck all and he's not a champion)

Alonso is hilarious but I would take everything he says with a grain of salt. Also if he were to answer honestly he would just list himself as the best driver on the grid because that's quite clearly what he believes (and he's not necessarily wrong)

There may be some truth to this. Found a leaked artist's impression of Strolls 2018 car, pic related.

You can tell its not an older car because of the large tyres, canopy, high nose and repositioned exhaust. The number of bolts on each wheel betray the beefed up suspension.

I don't know why anyone has any high expectations for Haas. They had a pretty shitty first season as well aside from the first 2 races

At least Sauber has made decent cars in the past. Now that they have money and are actually seemingly looking forward instead of just trying to make ends meet, I wouldn't be surprised to see them move up the order in 2018. Their 2017 performance is guesswork but really it seems to suggest that they are not going to focus that much on it and just hope they score some points early on.

Haas on the other hand had 10000 problems and their car was all over the place. They don't even build their own chassis and many other parts are outsourced as well. I'm not saying other teams don't do this but the teams that do are generally backmarkers (Manor RIP), and it shows that Haas really isn't even in direct competition with the likes of Williams or Force India. I guess they are also looking to build upon the team slowly, but they have a long way to go. I don't know how long Gene Haas is going to be interested in funding a backmarker or a lower midfield car for quadrillion dollarinos a season, especially with more USA focus coming into the sport as well.

I honestly don't even really know why people like Haas other than the fact that they're American but I guess it's just an opinion

t. Daniel "Mark Webber" Ricciardo

Ricciardo is MAYBE a 1 WDC driver, but likely will end up in Alonso-mode except without titles or Mansell-mode without lucking into a GOATmachine at the age of 38

Max on the other hand has autism for racing and probably clocked in like 100,000 simulator laps this off season alone for fun, and if he doesn't kill himself on track he will probably win like 4 WDC's minimum and become even more hated than Vettel was at the peak of his RB carbabbyness

Why so pessimistic Giovanni?
>>
>>73948204
>He's like the best Italian junior in forever

That's the reason I don't want to see him cucked in Ferrari forever, gods know when another Massa 2008 will happen, it would be really sad to see him not having a little bit of a chance of a WDC ever
>>

>and never will be repeated
>never

So basically you're saying it was a fluke.
>if it was skill, he could possibly one day repeat it
>>
>>73948261

True, but it's his best option I think. He did supposedly have interest from Red Bull, but the RB junior program and the Toro Rosso experience is probably even more of a death sentence after 2-3 years (look at Buemi, JEV etc). And Merc did offer him to be a part of their junior program and for him to drive fucking DTM for a year. And even then he would be basically third on the list of the Merc Juniors after Ocon and Princess Pascal. Plus there's no real Merc-associates space available now anyway now that Manor is fully kill.

What else is he supposed to do, hope that Sean Gelael's dad buys him a backmarker seat and somehow goes up from there?

Total speculation but maybe he could get a drive at Force India in 2018 depending on what Perez ends up doing and if Ferrari is willing to pay for it. Merc got Pascal into Ferrari-associated Sauber, so its not impossible for Ferrari to buy a seat at Force India for him. Plus according to Bob Bell, Giovinazzi was in contention for the 2017 seat as well, but they ended up choosing Ocon.
>>
>>73948393

Well, at least Merc showed that his 2nd driver policy isn't that strong.

FI might actually be an option, depends on what Kimi and Vettel will do, if Vettel stays and Kimi retires Perez might be an option for Ferrari leaving the FI seat for Giovinazzi, but to me is highly unplausible

back in the day younguns had zero fitness. Schumi was the first driver to take fitness seriously, or the first to succeed at it, anyhow.

F1 cars haven't been getting easier to drive, the drivers have been getting fitter, stronger and more resilient.

If anything, the cars are now mentally more challenging to drive as corners come in quicker succession. Not to mention the G-forces this season will exceed 2004 levels...

In order from the seasons that still get referenced, here's what I think you should watch of each season. These aren't the best races of the season

84. Monaco - Senna/Prost discussions
86. Australia
88. Italy. McLaren Honda discussions, also Ferrari
89. Japan - Senna/Prost discussions
90. Japan - Senna/Prost discussions
92. Pick any Mansell victory, the season is a write off but the car is still relevant to suspension discussions
94. Australia - Hill/Schumacher relevant for UK butthurt
00. Belgium - Hakkinen/Schumacher The Zonta move
05. Japan - Raikkonen rockets forward.
07. Australia - Hamilton/Alonso Ham debut.
08. Italy - VWL first time
08. Brazil - Brazil Butthurt
09. Australia - Brawn fairy tail
10. Australia - Just a solid race, summarises a lot of the season nicely.
11. Canada. VWL season ignore everything else in this year. Also Ham has a mental breakdown.
12. Spain. - Guess who!
13. China. It's a VWL season.
14. Bahrain - Watch the whole qualifying and the whole race.
15. Hamilton wins everything skip this season
16. Austria - Defines a lot of the season.

Schumacher years, just read his wikipedia entry.
I'd say the most important years for current discussion are
88(Senna/Prost/Mclaren Honda)
90(Prost/Senna),
07(Ham/Alo/Rai/Mas)
08(Is that Glock Ham/Mas)
10(last DRS free year Vet/Ham/Alo/Web/But),
12(tires, Vet/Alo)
14(turbo, Ham/Ros)

it's like this because in the old days the cars were so unreliable that there was a great chance to score points just by finishing at all, no matter how slow your car was.

the reliability has improved to the point that having just 6 cars score points would mean Merc-Merc-RB-RB-Ferrari-Ferrari finishes 75% of the time, with other teams only scoring the odd point or two, and backmarkers having positively zero chance outside of an Indy 05 farce
