They last relatively long; problem was no one bothered to service them enough. If you mix oil in with the fuel, it helps a lot as well.

The 4 engines a year rule would be the main problem, but it's already a problem. I feel, if the engine restrictions weren't as stupid as they are, a 0.8l rotary turbo would be able to compete in both power and reliability in a season. Obviously it would start off poorly, because they're not being used in racing at that level, but it would be developed. Consider, they did win Le Mans, and the other cars in that race did well two. It did take them a while, but supposedly the engineers said the R26B in the winning car could run another 24 hours without fail by they're estimates.

Mazda measures a rotarys displacement over 1 revolution of the output shaft.
A reciprocating piston engine's displacement is measured over 2 revolutions of the output shaft.
>That's why people use the rough rule of thumb of doubling the rotarys displacement to compare it to a reciprocating piston engine.

The reason we measure a reciprocating piston engine over 2 revolutions of the output shaft, is that it takes that long for each working chamber to take a charge.
Meanwhile in a rotary, it takes 3 revolutions of the output shaft for all chambers to take a charge.

If you want to compare it to a reciprocating piston engine, which you have with your "less displacement" comment, they you have to use the 2616cc figure.

If we look at the RX-8, the most advanced atmo rotary to enter production, in it's highest spec it made 232hp from the factory:
232hp / 2.616L = 88hp/L

Compare that to a Honda S2000, which was sold around the same time:
247hp / 1.997L = 123hp/L

How the fuck is that "higher power from less displacement" ?

Don't get me wrong, I fucking love rotarys (that's why I know so much about them), but the "only a 1.3 litre" argument is so fucking technically inaccurate it's not even funny.

I'm sure everyone will get used to it though. People got used to the straight high noses, the "step" noses, the curved front wings of e.g. 2005 which looked atrocious IMO, people even almost got used to the dicknoses of 2014.

Plus people got used to the tall and narrow rear wings which honestly do look quite ridiculous when you think about it

I know it is the regulations mate. I'm basically saying I wish the regulations weren't like that because the FIA obviously knew that it would result in such rear wings. It doesn't make a difference regarding the fact that people will eventually get used to it though.

So many of these shitty and ugly solutions to aero were forced by the regulations, yet people got used to almost all of them visually over time. Even now, the high noses of 2012-2013 look a bit strange because I am so used to the curved low noses of the current era.

What's the official /f1/ approved consensus of Ross Brawn? Absolutely based, a low-key shady cunt, bit of both or neutral?

Considering how long he spent with Flavio and at Ferrari it's clear he is obviously not the cleanest person. Also has a certain (pretty well-deserved) sense of mild arrogance about himself, so I hope he doesn't start testing out his power fantasy levels when in charge of F1.

Has anyone read his book btw? I got it a while back but still haven't gotten around to it. Is it good? Any key insights that might not have been common knowledge previously? I'll read it myself when I get some more time.
