Why are women in academia so rare? Are women just less intelligent than men?
>>8869364
Intelligence is a spectrum and women are on the lower end. After they complete their transition to men, they can become more intelligent.
The fact is that most of the successful women in STEM are men.
>>8869371
That would explain why women want to become men, but why do some men want to become women?
>>8869375
Spectrum of fetishes.
Why is science losing its place in western culture? I mean real science, not pop science infotanment junk. The term STEM was meant to bring more of the educational establishment into understanding the importance of STEM subjects. Instead they keep watering it down. First they added in Art to make STEM into STEAM. Now they're adding in Reading to make STEAM into STREAM.
What, if anything, can be done to fight off this dilution of STEM's importance in the education system?
Human culture isn't interested in facts.
make people actually engaged in science and maths during school
>hey, anon, what's your major?

Does anyone have the solutions manual to Ken Rosen Discrete Mathematics? It would really help in matching my work to the actual book answers. I checked everywhere online and can't track it down yet
>>8868001
hey i have that book but i don't have solution manual and i am about to probably fail the class unless i learn not to be a brainlet lmao
>>8868001
I have the fifth edition's solution manual
where do you want me to post it
>>8868054
can you post a link on mega
Explain to me (a brainlet) how evolution even happens
fucking bad thots like in ur pic
Mutations, and then natural selection. Literally you could google this shit.

Math
About to start my master's at same place in applied math.
Love this place, but I feel like the departments are so small I can't choose to study outside what they give. I might not stay here for PhD, even though the applied math dept has already offered me a place.
Anyone know a place with good functional analysis?

What are some safe, well-tested means of boosting brainpower?
There's a lot of bullshit floating around about how to boost IQ, but that's not what I'm interested in. I'm more curious about daily habits that increase the amount of intellectual output a person is capable of. Some questions:
How much caffeine is too much?
What's the best time of day for productivity?
Does exercise really improve mental performance?
Any opinions on sleep cycles, concentration drugs, or mental exercises such as n-back?
Links to studies would be great.
Best amount of caffeine is no caffeine. If you weren't already addicted to it you wouldn't need it.
something along the lines of eating baby blood or umbilical juice or something
If you're over 20, which you should be, it's too late.
You'll be a brainlet forever.
Post your questions that don't deserve their own thread in here.
Tips for good questions:
>provide context
>check stackexchange first
>if stuck half-way into a question, show your work so far

I do, but then again I'm a no one, so I suppose you're right
>be le smart kid but le lazy meme
>had several scholarships in surplus cuz went to mediocre state school that gave me $$
>mom lost house + all monies
>give her all my funds because trusted her as she's in a legal battle over the house
>lawyer fucked us over in the end (aka probably figured we ran out of my funds)
>be in middle of uni
>suddenly have to worry about things like food and gas and shit
>be homeless for a while
>scholarships demand a certain courseload
>have no more funds because gave it mom
>stressing for cash because I realize she's not good with money at all
>GPA tanks
>sleep in random places
>depressed as hell
>bipolar as hell
>gf constantly breaks up with me because I get autistic a lot over nothing
>I swear babe it's just 3 hours of sleep is making me like this
>lost all scholarships
>gf cheated on me
>to be fair I cheated too from her constant break ups
>still get destroyed because I'm a hypocrite
>hate mom and lost all trust in her
>hate exgf because fucked with my mind at the worst time of my life
>at the last year of my math degree
>doing abstract algebra and zfc set theory class among others
>it's the hardest class I've done
>love it but miss classes from either not wanting to sleep in the same bed as mom because all we can afford is shitty efficiency from her shit job
>failing even harder
>becoming borderline suicidal
>abuse adderall to constantly have enough motivation to work + study + avoid falling into suicidal void
>no luck, too brainlet to handle it properly
>future destroyed
>wanted to get a high enough GPA and GRE to maybe get into CMU or something for either philosophy in mathematics or something interesting
>lowered it to financial engineering because at least make money
>lowered it to applied CS because hey math + CS is fairly demanded
>lowered it to circus performer and youtube meme explainer like memesauce or asap science
Sorry for blog post, but pls convince me that I still have a chance in higher academia.
Please convince me.
tl;dr life turned upsidedown and GPA tanked and lost scholarships and borderline homeless
do I still have a chance in higher academia or will I be perpetually filtered out due to my GPA getting destroyed?
that's all I want to know honestly

You're not out of it, but fuck man how stunted is your worldview that you would ever think that giving money to your parents like that is okay?
They shot their load and they made you. If they're not having any more kids, they should be putting all free resources into you, not the other way around. It's simple game theory.
OP should have kept the money for them self.
Women will always have free handouts and shelters to stop them from being homeless without having to do shit. Yet a hardworking man that has earned their scholarships is expected to be homeless and fail.
Fuck life.
Anyway as long as OP does really well in GREs they should be able to get into a graduate program and live off being a TA. Theres still hope if you want it.
I was reading that Elon Musk got his BSc degree in physics and right after he started his PhD studies. In USA you need a masters to do a PhD? I am Brazilian, and here the order is bacharel (BSc), mestrado (Ms) and PhD (doutorado). Can someone explain this to me?
>>8870680
Some universities allow you to do both at the same time. You're going straight for a doctorate, but it takes the time for a doctorate + the time for a masters.
>>8870680
What benefit do you get out of completing your PhD directly after a Bachelors? Appart from getting out of uni quicker and into the real world.
To me it just seems silly, like you haven't learnt enough to really contribute anything new... wouldn't it be better to go ahead with a master's first?
>>8870775
It depends on the field. Someone who has a PhD is just as prepared as someone with a PhD and masters, all else, equal, 90% of the time. Masters is like the knowledge component of the PhD, but that is not what shows the mastery of the field, its the thesis crackdown
I don't normally post on this board, but I'm an Econ/Math double major in college that does a lot of investing in his free time. I don't want to get into the economics of this and mostly focus on the science, but I was looking at grain prices (corn, soybeans, wheat) and they've pretty much gone universally down. I don't know much about the technology behind this, but it seems to be the cause of GMOs and similar genetic engineering techniques that have boosted yields.
Now, given that prices are so low, I was wondering if any situations that could boost prices that are science-related had a probability of happening. What i mean by this is, do scientists forecast droughts in the Midwest/Great Plains that would restrict supply or are we steadily approaching a water crisis that can't be solved with desalination?
Additionally, are there more technological advancements to come? I've read about CRISPR and it seems like you can use it to do precise gene-editing in plants (https://ensia.com/voices/crispr-is-coming-to-agriculture-with-big-implications-for-food-farmers-consumers-and-nature/) so I'm under the impression the increased development of CRISPR should be groundbreaking. Is it really groundbreaking for plants or is it not really that big of a deal given that we're already doing GMOs? How much more can CRISPR do than our existing capabilities can?
>>8870383
Sorry m8, this is basically a new /pol/ about IQ differences between races and social classes, gender, gravity, shape of the earth and blaming atheist for Dark Ages.
Also bump, but don't be so optimist.
>>8870623
Anyway thanks for the subject, I'm not biologist but I'll check it out
Hope other can be more constructive than me
>>8870383
>the increased development of CRISPR should be groundbreaking
Bear in mind genome editing via CRISPR
has been done only a few years, and only
with a few organisms, and is not heavily
funded for research.
Climate change is a hoax, it's the debunked "global warming" all over again.
>>8870328
ALL IS LOST
Go back to /pol/.
This is the 4th thread today saying global warming or evolution is false and it is only making you look retarded.
Is there such a thing as being TOO brainlet? I'm trying to do precalculus on khanacademy and this shit is like written in Sanskrit or something.
>>8869570
i would suggest just walking on down to the local union hall and getting yourself involved in a trade.
>>8869570
We've found the biggest brainlet piggot (pig + faggot, fyi) on /sci/, people. Look at OP, laugh at his inferior intellect and increase your self-esteem by sucking confidence from OP like an autistic vampire.

>we're looking for a recent STEM graduate in either Physics, Mathemathics or Engineering, who is highly motivated, a team leader, not afraid to go the extra mile, and has atleast 7 years of relevant experience in Machine Learning, Neural Networks, C++, Java, Python, SQL, Hadoop
>starting salary: competitive (i.e. Minimum wage)
Is it just me or are job requirements in STEM getting more ridiculous by the day?
meh

>He's gained all this knowledge and is incapable of starting a successful business
If you're not the one paying wages, you're a failure.

I have a weird question about digestion, and I assume biology falls under /sci/ domain. So about 45 minutes ago I ate a grand slam at the Denny's here on campus. Got back to my apartment, stomach pain, and now I'm on the pot finishing up a torrent of liquid shit. Judging by the amount, my body didn't even try to process this stuff, yet of course it's still a poopy brown sludge. So my question is: how long is the digestion process, and how did my body manage to both reject and turn the food into some semblance of poop in such a short amount of time?
>>8869131
nice salmonella you got from there
>>8869131
are you truly incapable of using google?
https://www.google.com/#q=time+digestion
>>8869131
That's much too fast for the solid food you've consumed to be coming out the other end. 45 minutes is enough for liquids though. What you've done is consume a liquid (or something that quickly dissolved into a liquid in your stomach), which has softened the shit that was already in your colon.
>forget to write "+ c" after indefinite integral
>prof marks entire problem wrong
How much partial credit should "+ c" be worth?
>partial credit
If your Prof gives partial credit, you are in a brainlet class.
>>8868927
None
Kys low IQ retard

If you think this, it's actually you who have never been in a serious class.
