I lived in West Pelzer between 2010-2012. My fiance grew up there. It was a sketchy town. Don't remember ever seeing that mill, but it looks like it was in a part of town I rarely drove by. I asked him about it and he thought they tore it down, but said that he could be wrong. I can double check with him family later.

Ive gone through pelzer multiple times a year since 2008. Its a convenient route to take from I85 to I385. Theres way more people there than the source listed above. Ive seen the gerber water tower. In my opinion, in reality these groups, while they exist, are relatively small. They just have a lot of power and connections and are willing to use them to which can be dangerous. When you get into big positions of power like that, you have to pick and choose your battles. Its easier for us to sit here and say "why didnt they fight every single incident like superman for the greater good" but between bureaucracies, legal abilities and risking your career or life when there are other things that need you attention sometimes you just have to suck it up and deal with it or put it on the back burner and hopefully get back to it. Maybe im just naive but I like to think there are some good people in these situations that would do whats right, but there hands are tied. I've been to Pelzer once and aside from a few corporate stores, and patches of houses everything is desolate and abandoned. Place gave me the creeps for serious.

I have been to Pelzer a good many times, it's just really poor. Are you afraid of poor people in an obsolete mill town? The surrounding area is actually full of pretty farmland with richer old people... and some more poor people. If that's the same mill building I'm thinking of (most of it was either burned down or was demolished I think) it has a huge hole in the side of it, shouldn't be too hard to check out.
