Sit ups strengthen your core. Do situps.
If you truly want to get /fit/ you're looking at lifting weights, cardio doesn't really burn fat or build muscle. Cardio, as the name states, is good for the cardiovascular system (your heart). I'd recommend looking into StrongLifts 5x5 for starting out (google it)
