You can demonstrate the phases of the moon with any ball. Just dip one half in paint, and rotate it around, with the paint line perpendicular to the ground. What you'll see is what the moon would look like at the equator at the equinox. If you live north or south of the equator, look at a non full or new moon at a solstice. You'll see the angle is different. This is evidence of the normal heliocentric interpretation.

Okay, I think I understand this bit enough to reply. The horizon line is a basic principle of perspective and does not need any curvature to exist. If you look down a corridor it appears as though the floor gradually rises while the ceiling gradually lowers, right? If you were in a long enough corridor you’d see a point where the ceiling and floor appeared to converge. This is what you see at the horizon line. How the ocean is supposed to appear as though it is rising above the point where my feet lie on a globe is beyond me.

As for the ships appearing to sink? This is caused by the amount of air between you and the ship growing as it travels further away from you. The air is grows denser the closer it is to sea level meaning things will vanish bottom first. On top of this, there is a line of mirage created by the atmosphere that reflects the ocean slightly above where it actually ends meaning that things will appear to sink into the ocean.

The "shape" of the ocean on the Earth is never a tear drop, as if it's being pulled in one direction by the moon. Rather it's an ellipse, like it's being pulled in two directions. This is because there are two forces working on the oceans of the planet - the gravitational pull of the moon, and centrifugal force from the Earth and the moon orbiting one another.

Imagine you're looking at the Earth like it's a clock, and you're standing at 12. When the moon is above the 12 position of Earth, you're experiencing a high tide resulting from the gravitational pull of the moon on the water of the planet. When the moon is at 3, you are experiencing low tide. When the moon is at 6, you experience high tide again but this time it's because the centrifugal force of the orbit between Earth/moon pushes the oceans outward from the moon on the opposite side.

The sun also has an impact on the tides, which is why we have spring and neap tides where the overall tides are slightly higher/lower than other times of the year. It's not nearly the same impact as the moon but it's there.
