It is indeed a symbol of sulphur, but the one you posted has been used in more recent times. In the pic here, is the one used more commonly.

It obviously isn't a physical sulphur as a material, it all has to do with alchemy, the inner alchemy. Even if these were symbols for an actual material, it's not the Suplhur itself, it could be that for example Salt is for saliva, or sperm, etc. I'm not saying it is, just giving an example.

In any case, my impression is, that alchemy has to do with awakening the Inner Fire, or the Serpent Fire.
