Had this incredibly scary recurring nightmare as a kid, every week or two for years, where I effectively caused the apocalypse by summoning some entity that replaced the sky. The entity scared me a lot, but after that there was this rubber duck on a river in some industrial area and that scared me more than anything. My vision would just zoom on it and I couldn't blink or look away until I'd wake up sitting up and drenched in sweat. Looking back I think the duck symbolized the only remaining life and it reminded me of what I'd done.

There was a book I read when I was still in elementary called something like "Jade Green: A Ghost Story". It scared the piss out of me at the time, but I don't know if it was ACTUALLY scary or if I was just a wimp.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is the OG horror book for kids though. After I read that book as a little kid, I had trouble sleeping for a week.

I had this schoolbook with a bunch of short stories in it, I think Grade 8, and there was this one story where some people put up this roll of barbed wire over their fence because they're paranoid about robbers. They have this little kid like 6 or something, and he likes to play games where he's an explorer, so one day he decides to crawl through this tunnel of barbed wire. They pull his mangled corpse out at the end and it's supposed to show how their attempts at safety killed their own son, but even though the description wasn't graphic it really hit me for some reason.

I either had nightmares or either repressed experience in a place on my parents property on the bush line, I was shit scared as a child to even go anywhere near there, but for the life of me I have never know why. Any time I even try thinking about it an intense fear washes over me, like o have never felt before. As a kid I was pretty scared of the dark, or more so what might be lurking in it(wild animals not really paranormal shit), but my fear of the dark has nothing on this, to this day it is still the most unsettling thing in the world for me to go there and even now after almost 2 decades I still have no clue as to what it is that unsettles me and it still unsettles me to even think about why.
Not really paranormal, but at the very least odd

I used to have a recurring nightmare where I was living my usual life until out of nowhere the sky turned black and people were being killed by weird tar monsters and there was one that always singled me out. I have no idea who it was supposed to be since the face was so distorted. And every time I would wake up just after it put it's hand through my stomach.

Turned out, years later, that it was because my parents kept expired bread long enough for it to mold and I was eating it. So for a while I was grossed out by one brand of bread and wouldn't make anything with it for fear of running into that thing again.

I was scared of bridges as a child and would try to hide whenever I was in a car going over one. I would only pop my head up when I'd crossed it. I was also scared of swimming and still am until this day. I can't swim in lakes, ponds, creeks, etc. I can only swim in pools.

Makes me wonder if I had a past life where I drowned at a bridge.

Please I have 2 requests.

Btw I thought this book was a Mandela effect on me for 15 gears until I found x. I have a vague memory of 2 stories in particular.

Do you have those stories?

True, the only one that got me was Evil Kenevel. But as a kid Evil sounds cooler than Evel, so it doesn't surprised me that i spelt it wrong.

I'll put it this way, ever have a feeling where you were trying to remember something harder than ever before?

I don't have that page scanned (if someone has or would scan that and the book credits, that would be awesome), but essentially her mother had some sort of contagious disease like the plague or whatever, so they covered up her death so as not to send people into a panic. Still a shit thing to do to her daughter, but pretty sure it's not based on a real story anyway, just an urban legend. "Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction?" once ripped off this story and passed it off as "true", although most of their "true" stories aren't legit anyway. Still entertaining, tho.

That works.

But IMO, it always seemed too over-the-top, like your typical "Obey your parents or bad shit will happen" morality story, which it essentially was.

I always pictured the New Mother as kind of a donkey-woman myself, dunno why. Could've been a dog-woman or just a weird-ass lady with a tail.

And since I have this book with me, page 90's notes have this to say about the story:

>Cautionary tales warning children to behave or suffer the consequences are found in most cultures. "The Drum" is a retelling of such a story which was passed down by several generations of an English family, then migrated to America with another family member. In the retelling in this book, the title has been shortened from "The Pear Drum," and the names of the children have been changed from "Blue-Eyes" and "Turkey" to "Dolores" and "Sandra." See the text and letter from J. Y. Bell and the letter from Lilian H. Hayward, in which she recalls a literary version of such a story that appeared in England during the late nineteenth century, Folklore 66 (1955): 302-4, 431.

>The folklorist Katharine M. Briggs regards the gypsy girl in the story as a kind of Satan in offering the drum in return for evil behavior, but as more evil, for the girl goes back on her bargain, something Satan would not do. Briggs, Part A, Vol. 2, pp 554-55.
>>
>>18112507
Really? How strange that we both saw it that way. I guess trying to visualize a tail thumping on the floor that isn't from a dog, I think of a farm animal with a big, thick tail like a donkey or horse that uses it to swat flies.

And lol "Blue-Eyes" and "Turkey" as the names of the kids from the original story, I forgot about that.
>>
>>18112510
Strange, I never imagines a donkey. I imagined an ugly crone creature in a rocking chair with her tail thumping on the ground every time she rocks backwards.

Not spoopy but a thing I still think about.

I had to be like six or seven and one of my teeth fell out. I was laying in my bed with my tooth under my pillow and couldn't fall asleep.

I reached under my pillow to make sure my tooth was still and got up and went to the living room where my dad was standing there talking to my cousin and I was like I can't sleep.

He told me to go back to bed and when I went back I checked my pillow again and the tooth was gone and here was money instead.

inb4 dream - I asked my dad about it and he had the same memory of me walking in.

scarecrowlady.jpg

It was a nightmare I had when I was 10 years old. I was in my parents bedroom, looking at the bed frame. There were all kinds of bugs and colorful beatles crawling along the bed frame. I looked across the room. There was a scarecrow lady sitting in a chair but I could not see her face. She had scraggly brown hair and wore a beige nightgown. I froze in my dream, bugs were crawling all over her. She turns her neck straight to me. I see that she has no eyes, just complete darkness. Then she screams "SHUT UP!!".

I awake to my dad telling me to get ready for my trip to the lake with my friends. We rode jet skis and did things kids do. But the lakehouse felt very sinister and was crawling with bugs. One time I went inside to get something, and noticed the bathroom light on, even though I swore it was off when I left. When I came back it was off again.

That night I couldn't sleep. The cicadas chirping outside unsettled my core. I was all alone to my friends talking in there sleep. I left the Night at the Museum DVD menu open so I wouldnt be in complete silence, but it only made the scene more eerie.

Nothing else happened but it was just a traumatic experience as I couldnt help but feel that that nightmare meant something. And that if I dared to come under the covers the scarecrow lady would be sitting there, cursing me with those dark eyes.
>>
>>18110438
I loved those books as a kid. Me and a couple other kids in class would bring them to school and read a new story every day. Honestly surprised I wasn't more afraid of them. The art was creepy as shit, as can be seen from OP's pic.

And since I have this book too (it's the third one I seem to be missing) I'll post the notes for this story as well, found on page 95:

>The Wendigo, or Windigo, is a female spirit that personifies the awful cold of the northern forests. She figures in the folklore of forest Indians in Canada and in sections of nothernmost United States.

>According to this legend, the Wendigo attracts victims by calling to them in an irresistible way, then bears them away at great speed, finally sweeps them into the sky, then drops them, leaving them with frozen stumps where their feet once were. As they are carried off, they characteristically scream ". . .My fiery feet, my burning feet of fire!"

>The only defense against the Wendigo is to restrain the person who is being called. But the spirit then tries to entice whoever is holding him. See Crowe, NMFR 11:22-23.

>In the lore of some northern tribes, the Wendigo functions not as the spirit of the cold, but as a cannibal giant that kills for human flesh. Some nineteenth-century Indians also suffered a compulsion to eat human flesh, an illness anthropologists later described as a "Windigo psychosis." See Speck, JAF 48:81-82; Brown, American Anthropologist 73:20-21.

So the cannibal Wendigo is the one I and others are more familiar with, but I've never heard of this female spirit of winter outside this book. Anyone have any insight?

Also, more on page 102:

>"The Wendigo": This Indian tale also is a summer camp tale that is well known in northeastern United States. It is adapted from a version that Professor Edward M. Ives of the University of Maine narrated for me. He first heard it in the 1930s when he attended Camp Curtis Read, a Boy Scout camp near Mahopac, New York. For a literary version of this tale, see "The Wendigo" by the English author Algernon Blackwood, in Davenport, pp. 1-58. The name DéFago used in the above adaptation is taken from this story.

Thanks again. Kid me was a big wimp, but I remember it dawning on me that the thing wanted its toe back, and the implications of ripping the kid and his family open to get it back creeped me the hell out. Any other stories would be great!

not the same anon, but there were 2 that really stuck with me as a kid

one was about a group of friends and they have an encounter with some kind of dead monster, and the big thing was that it had this yellow face.

the other was about a flood bringing a bunch of corpses up from the ground or something.

Hey, this is the anon who originally started requesting these stories.

Thanks a lot, bro. My son is now 8, which was about the age I was when I started reading them. Until I can find the original collection on Amazon, I've been reading these stories with high him on my tablet.

The little fucker is scared, but extremely fascinated. He is practically begging me to find the original books.
>>
>>18115196
D'aww, how cute. Nothing like sharing scares with the next generation. I have the first two and will probably buy newer copies at some point in the future (with original art) so that I can spread the joy of terror with my little niece when she's old enough.

Any other stories you guys want?
>>
>>18112495
This one fucked me up as a kid. The fear of being abandoned in the middle of nowhere by your own mother, and what's more, she leaves you with a horrific faux-mother-creature. The fact that the story ends with the kids looking in through the window to see the mother with glass eyes and a wooden tail thumping on the floor and doesn't tell you what happens next is just the right recipe for a child's imagination to run wild with morbid possibilities. Still one of my faves.

>>18115215
Haha, exactly. Alvin Schwarz did it first.
>>
>>18115212
Actually, if it helps you feel better, one of my alternate theories is that there was already some strange woman like this in the town/village and the mother of the girls made a deal with her to teach them a lesson. The wooden tail thing could just be fake and the glass-eyed lady is in on the whole thing to scare the kids straight.

The show Dinosaurs creeped me my the fuck out as a kid. The puppets were so grotesque and disturbing to me.

Also Between the Lions, especially with that Smarty Pants guy (pic related). What was the thought process behind his design?! It's like they purposefully sought out to horrify children.

Another thing I remember that scared me as a kid was the episode of Arthur with the Jekyll/Hyde song. The end when hes at the library and the librarian asks if he's returning a book and he says, "No... RENEW!" used to freak me out.
>>
>>18115228
Huh, that's an interesting take. Takes away the spoops a little, so yes, I feel better lol
>>
I had a dream where I got chased by the gorilla from that one really old Spongebob episode. He'd drag me under my blanket like the grudge bitch and scream in my face. Then I'd wake up in some random area of my house and it'd happen again over and over till the morning came. Only time I've ever had an inescapable nightmare.

I cannot thank the Scary Stories anon enough. These have been great to read.

I recall one that really irked me as a kid. Something about a man making "delicious meatballs" out of people.

Another one about a small black dog.

And yet another about a man, his toes, and an unfortunate end involving a shotgun.

If you happen to know which ones I'm referencing I'd be stoked.

i often have this dream.
i'm in the woods alone, wondering down a path.
as i draw to the exit of the trees there is a bridge.
at the other side of the bridge there is a cliff.
i stand and peer off the cliff as i'm watched by these glowing eyes.
i just.
walk off.
but then i stop moving
i look up and this clawed scaley arm is reached out holding onto my arm.
in a snap instance i'm thrown back onto the the ground instead of jumping.
the fangs of the faceless and glowing eyes appear two finger lengths away from face.
not yet i'm told it is not my time.
the life is no longer mine to end there is a deed to be done.
only then will i die.
then i usually wake up

There was a series of shitty live-action detective games called Tex Murphy. The one I played through had some very scary parts. Eventually you're in Area 51 and an alien is chasing you through the facility. I was so scared of seeing the alien I quit and have never played it since. I never saw the alien but just knowing it was trying to find me was enough to never want to play again.

>>
>>18119293
If you don't feel like reading just watch the linked clip. It's only 60 seconds. If you want a little more backstory I'll try my best to keep this short and to the point. I'll assume spoilers don't matter

In bloodborne you are a hunter of beasts. There is a curse occurring in a realm during an apocalyptic event called the "night of the hunt" where eldritch entities and humans reside in the same plain of existence.

Blood is the catalyst for many key plot points, and most importantly to the relevance of your wendigo post. Humans can become tainted by influence of the great ones or bad blood and in effect are turned into beasts. In effect though the beasts of bb can be good depictions of wendigos but are very separated in the avtual nature of the beasts

I did some weird shit when I had a fever as a kid. I would sleepwalk around the house at night and when dad came out from his bedroom I started screaming and shaking and my parents had to hold me down while I swore and screamed. All I remember is that I was really scared. This happened from time to time but I've passed it now. Nothing really paranormal but scary nonetheless

I read an old book of children's ghost stories in school a long time ago called 'Haunted Houses' by Bernhardt J Hurwood.

There was a vampire story in there called 'A Blood-Drinking Ghost' and it terrified me as a kid. I believe it may have been the first time a book actually scared me.

Thanks to the anon who provided all the scans to "Scary Stories." In hindsight, as a writer and an artist, I realise how heavily things like this affect us as kids.

Great stuff itt, guys, both from those excerpts and most of the personal stories too. Thanks! :)
>>
>>18119790
OP again. This one, I think, is actually one of my personal favorites. It hits you right where it hurts and doesn't even need any (admittedly amazing) artwork to do so. Funny in its own way, but makes you go "oh shit!" anyway.
>>
>>18119462
lol. As the OP, I actually understand why they went about doing the change. I don't agree with it, personally, as I respect that removing the original artwork actually removes some of the gravity from the written pieces, but I understand why people would want to change it.

Times change and so do people. We don't have to like it, but it happens.

Goosebumps books were spooky. The Ghost Next Door, and the ghosts at camp, and the haunted town. The issue was that... well, nevermind.

~~~
I used to have nightmares as a kid (at least 8 years old, going until 12 or so) regularly where I would die. Falling off a cliff, going up into space without a helmet on, falling into the clutches of a crocodile, drowning, and many more I can't remember. Typically IRL it was suffocation that accompanied these dreams. By the time I was 16, they been had stopped completely. I've had probably none since then.
>it just stares menacingly
>look out the window, there's a sunset outside
>mom's friends exit through the hallway to my left after some time
>she pulls out her cell phone and calls dad
>I don't know what she's saying, but whatever it is she's really happy about it
>it's getting late outside
>she finally gets off her phone
>she smiles, waves at me, and just leaves through the hallway
>I'm completely alone in the building now
>the dogman statue suddenly turns towards me and walks off its pedestal
>I can't fucking move, I'm paralyzed
>it doesn't bark or growl, it just stares
>it crouches down, takes a running start, and lunges
>it fucking pounces on me
>it forcefully embraces me before everything fades to darkness
>wake up in a cold sweat
Back when I was seven, my mother always tried to encourage reading as she always said that "a love of books is one of the greatest virtues you can have growing up"
She always brought me to the library with her as she'd always be renting books to read, and she let me pick books from the kids section to rent alongside her.
There was this one book that I forget the name of that traumatised me, it was about some kids in school that would always find red dots on the pages of their school books, they found that they were stains from something dropping from the floorboards of the ceiling in their old classroom. It started to intensify and more and more of this liquid would fall in greater quanities visibly from the ceiling. The kids stay behind in the classroom late at night and are horrified to hear something large, lumbering around above them dragging something heavy across the floor.
That was only the first chapter, my mother would always help me to read the "more advanced" books with me, and she was fucking horrified, I was all freaked out by it, she was too and was like "well that's enough of that, I'm returning this tomorrow."
I didn't even know it was a scary book.
I had some serious trouble sleeping that night.
>>
Not paranormal, but kind of funny in hindsight
>In elementary school
>At lunch
>One of the kids at my table tells me about this monster movie he saw
>Bunch of people crash on this planet full of monsters that attack at night
>Describes this one scene where the monsters are dragging a woman down a hole in the ground as she's screaming and crying
>Says it's called "Pitch Black"
>Think about movie all day
>That night have series of nightmares about being stranded in the middle of nowhere with monsters lurking in the shadows
>Thought of movie freaks me out for years afterward
>Flash forward to junior high, finally have cable
>One day I see Pitch Black is coming on in an hour
>Spend that hour fretting and stressing
>Finally nut up and decide to face my fear
>Watch movie
>Laugh ass off for being afraid of something so dumb for so long
It became one of my favorite movies and I'm actually watching it now.
Kinda funny how it would never have been released without heavy edits if had come out even a year later, and could never have been made today.
Not for being super gory or "not PC" or whatever, but for having muslims as protagonists and for shouting "allahu akbar" without blowing shit up or being shot.
I just wanted to say thank you to Anon for posting all the stories. I never read the books when I was a kid, but reading them now, some of them honestly gave me shivers.
My grandma said that a lot of people die at night when they sleep. Angels come to take their souls. But as far as angels are lazy, sometimes they drop the soul. Then human just wakes up with the feeling of falling down
When I was a young lad, 5 or so, I'd wake up in the middle of the night because I felt a tiny bipedal being walkin on top of me along with very faint incoherent whispering. Anyways, after I moved to a different country it all stopped.
There was a legend of a mermaid on one of our neighboring rivers. There were many children that drowned in the river, one of them being an elementary school friend of mine 1st grade. Legend says, that a kid had been lured by a mermaid every dry season to bring forth the rain
There was also a huge tree near my grandparents house, it is said that many people were hung on that tree during the revolution and independence. One night rule playing with kids around the area, we all saw a person hanging from a rope. At the time we didn't know what it was, after telling our parents, they all told us to never play there again.
When i was really young like 3-4 years old I was shiting bricks over one stupid toy- a rubber parrot. My cousins always chased me with this fucking toy, and I always start crying and running to hide below the dining table.
Someone write an urban legend about an apparition that resides at the top of tall stair cases that throw people off when they're alone at night.
Any and all forms of mascots
>Never been traumatized by these things or anything
>scared shitless since day one
>video/pics of me as a baby at Disney World losing my shit at the sight of these things
>growing up I knew it was a person inside, still wouldnt go near them
Now Im living on my own and still avoid these things if possible but I can tolerate a little uneasiness.
