Not sure why your thread was so heavily derailed, OP. Anyway, as others said, there seem to be three possibilities, and these possibilities all lead to one decision you must make. For clarity, the three possibilities (assuming this is real):

1) Coincidence.
2) The item is cursed. Whenever it is moved or played, or plays, someone close to you will die.
3) The item is alerting you that someone has or soon will die.

Possibility three gives us more possibilities such as channels etc., but that's off topic. So your questions are 1) What's up with this (refer back to the three possibilities) and 2) what do I do with it?

Well, as you are unwilling to test it, playing it intentionally to see if someone dies, for good reason, then we cannot know for certain which possibility is true. The answer is clear. You must do as you are doing now. Leave it be. Don't dust it, touch it, sneeze near it, allow it to be moved unless absolutely necessary, consider even putting a glass dome over it. Do not play it or allow others to play it.

If you are going to be superstitious, perhaps justifiably so, about the music box, then that is your only option.

since getting close enough to it to take the picture the other day, I've been having terrible nightmares about drowning. I'm standing outside of my car and a wave of water like a tidal wave comes rushing towards me. I realize I'm either about to drown or get crushed by the car, so I try to get inside, but immediately get engulfed by the water. this has happened every night since I took the photo, except last night.
