JOSE CHUNG"S FROM OUTER SPACE!!!11!

The one with the bermuda triangle boat and the Benny Goodman music was a close second.
>>

Hard to say. They'd have to be categorized.

Can't choose. Most of 1-5 is supreme. 2-5 were probably the golden years, but season 1 has a lot of great stuff too.

it's one of the better ones anyway and I like the part where Skully walks through herself and she both turns around and looks at each other. Also Benny Goodman soundtrack.

So far I have only watched about 12 episodes of season 1. I'm getting bored. Does it get better?

Jose Chung, or the Toomes Episodes.

I can't watch this show anymore though, I literally feel myself get more paranoid and lose touch with reality when I watch it. I get closer and closer to insanity, and I don't want that

It was way too hokey and out of character for my liking, such as when Scully just grabbed Skinner and kissed him. Wrong on so many levels.

Yeah but so was Jose Chung.

I was in my 20s when it when it first aired, it became a Friday night ritual in my crowd to have a few beers at my place and watch the show before we hit the bars. It took itself so seriously most of the time, and in the the end the alleged mytharc turned out to be just some bullshit they were making up as they went along. Also until I got clean sometimes my life at the time seemed like one of the spooky episodes. 20 years later I find I like the fun episodes that turn all of that 90s edginess on its head.

I also liked the one where the psychic foretells Mulder's death from autoerotic asphyxia.

>Yeah but so was Jose Chung.

But it was a really funny episode overall. Triangle was just OOC and weird.

>I find I like the fun episodes that turn all of that 90s edginess on its head.

I like the better humorous episodes too, but them getting carried away in the later seasons is part of what ruined the show. The X-Files was always meant to be a mostly-serious, spooky show, not a comedy.

>I also liked the one where the psychic foretells Mulder's death from autoerotic asphyxia.

"Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose".

IMO, he was just screwing with Mulder. After all, he was having visions of the killer slashing Mulder's throat, and he was the one who ended up dying with a bag over his head anyway. Spoilers, but it's been decades, so anyone who doesn't want spoilers shouldn't be reading this anyway.

Yes.

>Fluke worm man thing in the sewer

"The Host"

>the one with the devil teacher was pretty good "elexis die" or something like that

No, it's "Die Hand Die Verletzt", "Excelsis Dei" was a dumb one with nursing home patients.

>>17697922
>There was more than one toomes episode ? I only remember the one where he gets out of an institution and goes to live under a fucking escalator unless I'm getting mixed up and toomes wasn't the stretchy guy

There are two with Tooms, "Squeeze" and "Tooms". The one you're talking about is the second one. And whenever a MotW character returns, it's usually a weaker episode, so I suggest you go watch "Squeeze" again.
>>
Field Trip? The episode where it's a nearly endless hallucination inside a giant mushroom.

Bad blood. Silly vampires...

Triangle is good too. Those long takes...
>>
>>17697967
Yeah I've noticed if you miss an episode you could miss part of the story. I barely remember watching Erlenmeyer flask but it goes into it's own episode later on in series 2 which was frustrating so I had to watch it again
>>17697977
>bad blood
That one was great. I really enjoyed it
I also enjoy how they give you an almost plausible answer for every situation and that it really could be just a coincidence like how scully is always getting at. But some episodes have no way of doing that like bad blood because at the start he melts but in the episode where mulder goes to Rio and lives in that building with his little Brazilian freind.( aliens are involved. Pretty sure it shows You his sister being.abducted as well) You could say that all that never happened and he imagined it due to being over heated and That why there isn't any evidence on the recorder
>>
>>17697959
>Triangle was just OOC and weird.
Well I still like it, but I haven't seen it in years so as a jazz fan I can accept the possibility that my judgement is clouded by the soundtrack.

>I like the better humorous episodes too, but them getting carried away in the later seasons is part of what ruined the show.
The hack writing that resulted from not actually having a story arc and never knowing if Duchovny would sign on for another season, plus too much gloomy, gothy pre-millenial angst, is what ruined the show.

>The X-Files was always meant to be a mostly-serious, spooky show, not a comedy.
It was marketed that way, but see above. The spooky implied mytharc turned out to be a con to trap viewers and boost ratings, and I fell for it and searched every episode for clues, and even now I still feel cheated. That's probably why I prefer the joke episodes.
>>
>>17698004
Pretty sure there was no melting in Bad Blood. Almost positive.

>You could say that all that never happened and he imagined it due to being over heated and That why there isn't any evidence on the recorder

"Little Green Men". And it's why I contested Mulder should have shoved the papers into his backpack instead of taking the recording.

>as a jazz fan I can accept the possibility that my judgement is clouded by the soundtrack

Fair enough, I don't remember the soundtrack, but almost every bit of music they put into the show was excellent, especially Mark Snow's original scores.

>The hack writing that resulted from not actually having a story arc

actually gave them the opportunity to be creative and come up with new ideas, at least early on.

>and never knowing if Duchovny would sign on for another season

That didn't happen until like season 7-8

>plus too much gloomy, gothy pre-millenial angst, is what ruined the show.

Gloomy stuff, no, that's pretty much the point of the show. Dark and spooky stuff. Pre-millennial angst, depends on what you mean. But poor writing and poor decisions ruined the show, and a lot of that was removing the series from its paranormal roots and trying to make it a yuppie sitcom with the occasional monster.

>The spooky implied mytharc turned out to be a con to trap viewers and boost ratings, and I fell for it and searched every episode for clues, and even now I still feel cheated.

Chris Carter is a troll, no doubt, but the Mytharc started out good until the show grew more and more popular and he decided to string everyone along indefinitely.

>That's probably why I prefer the joke episodes.

A lot of the early ones were great, I won't deny that. "Humbug" (which was a mix of silly and serious), "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space' ", and "Bad Blood" are some of my favorites. Others, like "Small Potatoes", "X Cops", or even "The Post-Modern Prometheus" were decent watches, but then you get to the later seasons as it goes on and they just keep getting worse. Throw in some ship-bait for the fangirls with even more OOC moments mixed with all that silliness and that's when the show starts to decay.
>>
>>17698029
If bad blood is the one where a couple make a blood pact and they find a guy in Jacuzzi at the start then there is most defeinetly melting( not like the green liquid in the erlenmeyer flask) more like a burning pretty sure his skin does melt off though. Mulder takes down the makeshift blinds in the intrerigation room. And the guy pushes himself into the corner before the sunshaft reached him where he begins to emit smoke and melts onto the floor. I'm not good at remembering names because my rewatching source is putlocker and there is a problem with names on the site and I never took any notice when it was being reerun on tv.
>taken the papers instead of the recording
Totally agree. But maybe that's why they did that. Just to lead you to think that he wasn't going to get any evidence and that everyone would think he was just imagining things.
>>
>>17698059
>actually gave them the opportunity to be creative and come up with new ideas, at least early on.
That's kinda my point, it worked as improv early on in the series (and they had to fight the network for those early mytharc episodes, the execs wanted it to be all monster-of-the-week),. It was compelling at first but they strung it out way too long with no resoluton. And there's still no resoluton or even signigicant plot development with this year's re-launch.

> the Mytharc started out good until the show grew more and more popular and he decided to string everyone along indefinitely.
Isn't that more or less what I said? I can't cite a source from memory but I'm pretty sure I read that they never really had a coherent story arc in mind.

> but then you get to the later seasons as it goes on and they just keep getting worse.
IMO that applies equally to the show as a whole, not just the silly episodes.
>>
>>17697977
>Bad blood. Silly vampires...
Bad Blood is great and also stars Owen Wilson's bro.

That oh shit opening scene
>>
>>17698080
That's a different vampire episode. I think you're thinking of the one where Mulder falls in love and vampirism is explained as that "allergy" to sunlight disease?

On that note what's the one where they interview the kids and they all give the almost verbatim same answer?
>>
>>17698080
>If bad blood is the one where a couple make a blood pact and they find a guy in Jacuzzi at the start then there is most defeinetly melting

That's not it, it sounds like you're discussing "3".

>It was compelling at first but they strung it out way too long with no resoluton. And there's still no resoluton or even signigicant plot development with this year's re-launch.

I can agree with that. And yes, the new miniseries, while not terrible, was a disappointment overall and that cliffhanger ending was fucking retarded.

>IMO that applies equally to the show as a whole, not just the silly episodes.

I'll grant you this too, the entire thing started to become a clusterfuck, I guess the bad comedy episodes were just the ones that stood out the most to me at the time.
>>
>>17698139

>>
>>17698611
Mulder's obsession with his phone and the use of tech and usenet and all that I think have helped it age p gracefully.

I was listening to the audio book of Scrum (the agile management thing), and hearing about this MIT autonomous insect bots I just immediately thought of that killer alien insects episode. And that sort of thing is current like 20 years on.

I've recently started watching in order (up til now I've only seen it whenever it was on TV) Not that it was a super great plot but i really loved the Sasquatch episode in season 1.
>>
>>17698664
>It all goes downhill from there and becomes a parody of itself in Season 6 thanks to Vince Gilligan "brilliant" writing.

Beg your pardon? Season 6 still had some good episodes, although it was around then when the series started to slip. But I can't recall Vince Gilligan writing any bad episodes except "Sunshine Days", and that was in season 9, the final one (before the new miniseries).

Wait, I just went and checked. Apparently he wrote a few more flops than I recall. But "Drive", "Tithonus", and "X-Cops" were pretty good. The "Dreamland" episodes were pretty bad, IMO, but a lot of other people liked them and they did have a few amusing moments. "Three of a Kind" was decent. I can't speak for a few of the others because I either skipped or don't remember them too well. "Field Trip" is one everyone here seems to love, but I hate for the gimmicky-ness and the "they're still hallucinating at the end!" theory everyone likes to pull.

So okay, he wrote a few bad ones, but his track record was pretty good before that.
>>

>>
>>17701052
I thought the sequel episode was pointless. And I really felt this was an instance in which they could have left well enough alone and had him as a typical serial killer instead of some demon. He was evil and creepy enough without that, it felt stupidly tacked on. In the original episode, people having flashes of him as a monster was fine, I heard they actually got the idea from a survivor of Dahmer describing his appearance change into something demonic, but the second one really overdid it.

I heard it was Chris Carter who insisted there always be something paranormal in every episode, despite earlier statements, proving once again that the man seemed determined to ruin his own show at times.

That's "Chinga". Stephen King helped write that one.

let's share: your first encounter with x-files.

my parents used to watch x-files, but they didn't allow me to watch it, that's why I secretly hid myself in a dark corner, whenever I heard the x-files-theme. I was 9 or 10 years old.
>>
So just a fan theory but anyone else think scully is immortal since the old man who takes photos of the soon to be killed people took her death so he could die also that might explain why time kept repeating when she blew up in the bank robbery attempt in a later episode
>>
>>17721972
lol, I was pretty young when I watched it and my parents didn't give a fuck. Feel sorry for all the kids out there whose parents were strict about their viewing habits.

>>17721977
Holy run-on sentence, anon. Punctuation is your friend!

It's kind of a dumb fan theory. I mean, I understand why, but I never bought into it. That would be even more lame than when they made CSM the father of both Mulder and Samantha. I did like how they teased it in the new miniseries, however, because the entire episode was just fun and fanservice.
>>
watching it for the first time, 13 episodes in, enjoying it a lot.
>>
>>17721977
We've known she's was immortal since ""Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose"

Rewatch it. He tells her that she doesn't die.
>>
>>17722719
There are a few duds, but most of seasons 1-5 are fantastic. A few in 6 are good, then it all starts going downhill from there. The new miniseries is a mixed bag, but most people seem to like the third episode, if you plan on watching those too.

>>17722730
Yeah, and he also thought Mulder was going to get his throat slashed by the murderous bellhop, but he didn't. And that also would contradict the little auto-erotic asphyxiation joke. So his track record isn't 100% perfect. Besides, saying "you don't" doesn't automatically mean "you don't EVER die". He likely either didn't want to tell her, couldn't see it, or, as I used to assume, meant that she wouldn't die on that case in that episode (whereas he did see Mulder dying there).
>>
>>17722754
The DVD commentary states that the Autoerotic asphyxiation line was merely a joke playing on the past jokes that Mulder loved porn. It was a running gag throughout the series.
>>
>>17722754
yeah I plan on watching all of them, apparently the later series of the originals aren't that great? I didn't like Space that much, just finished Beyond the Sea which I loved. Jersey Devil was great as well
>>
>>17722778
I figured as much.

>>17722788
>the later series of the originals

What do you mean?

>Jersey Devil was great as well

I don't like this one much, along with "El Mundo Gira" (despite Raymond Cruz's guest star appearance) and "Avatar", because they mess up the iconic cryptids that are depicted in those episodes. If they were just stand-alone creatures, I wouldn't have as much problem with it. But when you take well-known creatures like Jersey Devils, El Chupacabra, Succubi, etc., it makes no sense to change them so drastically. I don't know why they did this.
>>
>>17722927
i mean seasons eight and nine (as far as i've read) aren't as well received. and yeah i agree on the jersey devil, i started watching it in the hope it'd be about the actual jersey devil but i found feral family living in woods away from humanity also quite interesting.
>>

Me and my friend were you pussy to watch after the simpsons because the intro song scared us, and we were scared of having nightmares. I wished I had more memories of episodes, the only ones I slightly remember was the scene when some guy is mad at the evidence some other guy presenting asking, "so aliens wear Nike's??", and also the intro scene where there's like a cyclone and gusts of wind making someone in a dark front yard disappear? As a kid I also didn't understand why they're was always new and different characters in every episodies, as a kid I thought all shows have mostly the same characters with a few recurring characters.
>>
>>17723164
I think the first one you're talking about is "DPO", but he wasn't talking about aliens, it was a guy who could control lightning and electricity. The second one sounds like it's from the poliot episode.

I also find it funny how many young'uns were scared of the theme song. My sibs were scared of it too.
>>
>>17723492
*"pilot" episode. I don't know how stupid autocorrect missed that when it's always trying to "correct" other words unnecessarily.
>>
>>17722998

You have to watch through at least S7. Something happens at the end of S7 that makes it obvious why S8 and S9 aren't as good, but there are still a handful of decent episodes in the last couple seasons. Plus, what happens at the end of S7 and the beginning of S8 may not bother you much.

It was the one where these creatures were chasing them out in the woods, they looked like black monster things.

Oh, and the episode opened with a couple and their dog in the woods. The man hears something and tells the woman to run, so her and the dog leg it. The man loads his shotgun and looks nervous. Then it shows the woman hearing gunshots. Anyone able to tell me which one this was?

>>17733026
Ah, the last good season, though it has its share of duds. Enjoy it while it lasts.

As for the miniseries, fans are really divided on it. I see it as a mixed bag. They had pacing issues, most likely from trying to cram so much into six episodes, and there's a lot of bad mixed in with the good. It's still worth watching at least once. The second to last episode is the worst, but it has a weirdly humorous (but out of character, imo) scene.
>>
>>17697660
Season 2 was the best season as a whole, because it made the government and world at large seem the most dangerous. F. Emasculata and Blood's depiction of the government as a group that can just wipe it's own people out like it's nothing. Stuff like DHDV shows that the FBI is basically useless against the forces of magic and Colony/End Game did so with Aliens. Season 2 just made the X-Files world seem so vast, dangerous, mysterious and powerful.
>>
>>17733380
And, in the case of "Aubrey", even if you're a good person on the side of the law, your genetics may end up fucking you up and turning you into a crazy killer.

I haven't watched much of this show, but whenever I watch it it's always kind of a let down. The intro gets me pumped - the truth is out there!! - but the show never really follows that mantra, it's always - the truth is right here - kindof thing.

What, if any, are the most paranoid/ambigious/ conspiracy theory episodes? I think my favorite episodes are the sea monster one and the govt. aircraft Mulder is trying to investigate. I like the sense of never completely grasping the truth etc.

I have also seen Jose Chung before you rec that

thanks
>>
>>17742766
Give me some more time to think, but "Folie à Deux", which has been mentioned here a few times, is a decent paranoia one. Early mytharc episodes may interest you. And "Blood" isn't a favorite of mine, but that might fit your criteria. Same with "Wetwired".

>>
>>17742809
Oh, I forgot, "Wetwired" gave us that dumb "Mulder is red/green colorblind" thing that was only relevant to that episode and never went anywhere, just like "Fire" said he was pyrophobic, and then we never saw any real evidence of that before or since. Episodes that do that are annoying.

It's a spoof on that, but yes, they should have made them red.

This scene must've been the one that launched all those Mulder/Krycek shippers. He looks like he wants to tap dat ass there.

If there's ever going to be a female Bond, she's it.
>>
>>17709418
It is though. I can't remember the episode, but it starts with a dude in a postal processing place or some shit and he gets cut by a machine and eventually goes ape shit. Anyway, the episode is full of people seeing shit in computers, letters, etc. telling them to kill the people around them. This one is from a lady that gets her car checked up on and the mechanic's computer that she looks at fools her into thinking he's gonna murder and/or rape her, and that she has to kill him in self-defense. I'm sure someone else can actually name the episode

Dad loved the show from the get-go, probably mostly because of the alien stuff as he was an air force dude who'd had his own experiences, including seeing UFOs on multiple occasions as well as having an interaction with some MIB-type dudes.
I was rather young when it(X-Files) started, like you(I remember that I was in 3rd or 4th grade, which means I would've been whatever age 2nd graders were at the time, my elementary school classes/grades/ages are all kinda confusing because I had skipped 2 grades plus I was always doing the "challenge" program anyways which was technically just about bumping grades in&of itself).
A couple seasons into the show, my dad was more or less no longer physically in my life(and would not return, again physically, for many years). the rare occasions when we *did* get a chance to speak(by phone and then email), ofc we would talk about xfiles and other similar shows/stories we'd heard. no one in my home life would chat with me about these specific interests of mine and since dad was now living in hickville with a buncha rednecks the situation was very similar for him. of course, I loved these chats & still remember them fondly. =) I guess in some strange way it could be said that the show itself eventually became a reminder of the connection between us which in reality had become, at times, not entirely all that obvious(I'm speaking of during the times that we had very limited contact[thru phone & then email]).
Daddys getting older these days(as am I & everyone else ofc, haha!) and our relationship has never been better/stronger and we still, of course, frequently re-watch portions of the series & share similar conversations.
Whoa, sorry, went all nostalgic and sentimental there for a moment, hahah!
Anywho, yeah! I guess that was my very 1st experience w/ the X-Files series, as requested! =D

>>17697660
The first two episodes of the very first season were great. Also "Dreamland". Also when the guy gets interrogated in the train car. Also when Mulder switched bodies with that OCD dude.

>The intro gets me pumped - the truth is out there!!

I finally watch them in English and I was confused in the beginning, because the original always show "the truth is out there" and no other title, while in our country they replaced it with the name of the episode.
>>
>>17748109
What country are you from?
>>
>>17748109
I fucking hated the fact that our retarded translation of the phrase "xy is out there" in my language translates to "xy is around us" and it had me shit scared as to something being around me while I watch the show at 11pm at night at age 7
>>
I remember enjoying an episode called 'Drive'
>>
>>17749125
The one where the military is doing some kind of sound experiments and blowing people's heads up. One guy kidnaps Mulder and makes him drive East or West I can't remember which direction
>>
>>17749125
That's a great one and guest stars Bryan Cranston. Vince Gilligan would later use this to showcase his acting ability when pitching him for Walter White in "Breaking Bad".

>>17749144
West. They wind up near the coast at the end of the episode.
>>
>>
I keep finding myself rewatching "Arcadia" every so often. It's funny to see those actually try and pretend they're a married couple lol.
>>
Just started watching. A little dated, but still pretty great.
>>
>>17749174

There were a few guest stars who ended up in Breaking Bad. Hank and Tuco were each in an episode and I feel like I'm forgetting one more.
>>
The Pine Bluff Variant was a good one
>>
I caught a bunch of these episodes over the years but never watched through: Are there any episodes that take place in the spooky desert or around Area 51?

Big spooky empty deserts give me a spiritual hardon. It's like gazing into the netherworld. Staring off into the distance in Half Life 1 was the most profound part of my childhood.
>>
>>17750504
There were many. Vince Giligan wrote for the X-files.
http://breakingbad.wikia.com/wiki/References_to_The_X-Files
>>
>>17750504
Aaron Paul was apparently in an episode, but one of the dumb ones from S8 or 9.
>>
>>17750906
There is a two parter where Mulder body swaps with an Area 51 agent who wants to escape his life. There is also an episode about the Chupacabra which takes place in the desert.
>>
>>17751440
>an episode about the Chupacabra

But only by the loosest definition ever. Despite starring Raymond Cruz, this episode is a flop and I don't recommend it. Anon would be better off watching the Anasazi/Blessing Way/Paper Clip trilogy. Anasazi has a few good scenes in the desert. Roadrunners takes place in the Utah desert, but is another one I wouldn't really recommend.
>>
>>17751483
what was so good about the paper clip trilogy? I thought it was a bit overrated
>>
>>17751508
It was the first trilogy and first Mytharc set to really kick it into high gear. Mulder decks Skinner after his water supply was drugged. We see dead aliums and learn about the government tests. Mulder's father ends up murdered, as does Scully's sister, Melissa. They may seem overrated to you, but they're a pretty big deal to the series.
>>
>>17751535
ohh ok. thing is I skipped and saw what lots of people considered the best monster of the week episodes throughout most seasons. I kind of know what happens in the later seasons so the seeing those episodes after wasn't such a big deal for me.
>>
>>17751597
Yeah, watching them in the wrong order will do that.

>Yeah but so was Jose Chung.
It was almost entirely told through unreliable narrators though. you can't fault them for that. Hell, that was part of the humor of the episode.

A lot like Bad Blood, where we got to see how Mulder and Scully see themselves and each other.

The first time I says X files was when I was prob 9 or 10. I had no idea what it was it just freaked me out. I remember it being an episode about some spikey thing coming out of people's throat, made me nauseous. Any one know which episode I'm talking about?

I'm watching for the first time and have found this podcast to be helpful with dodging the weaker episodes. What's also great is that he looks through all the archived message boards to see what peoples reactions were to when the show first aired.
