I found them absolutely abhorrent characters. Granted, they tried to redeem the protag by giving him certain quirks, and some awkwardness here and there. ..but I still didn't like him at all.

It's too bad they spoofed away the fight with the guy with the glass sword. God damn I was so hyped from what little we could see in that episode preview.

Am I outgrowing anime in general? I probably am.. but then again, I watched Danshi Koukosei no Nichikou the other day and absolutely loved it.
...and I loved Overlord too, for some reason.

I think the problem is trope-laden and cliché animes that takes themselves too seriously.
I mean, OPM was nice. Kobayashi was comfy and feelgood.

...but if I hear about a new grand anime with a hugely interesting setting nowadays, I just know that it will be a colourful and glossy (and possibly interesting/good, even!) wrapping, around a candybar of the trite and tacky character concepts and nauseating combat-/magic-tropes we've all seen a hundred times before.

I'm not as bothered by outlandish fiction if it at least makes some attempt to show how the world works.
If an MC has a magical weapon or armour. How is it materialised? What is the difference from others? What are its limits?

That last one is usually always missing.
Taking Jin-Roh as an example (thank you for reposting my webm), you don't just see the MC in this super armour, you see how he actually equips it (needs assistance to do so) and earlier you see other soldiers using it and getting shit wrecked due to lack of training and proper countermeasures (flashbangs/sudden sunlight defeating night vision)

And yes, I agree. The tone and tempo is completely different in Jin-roh: More gritty and 'hefty', which lends far more emotional investment to what's happening.

Now, obviously, not every anime can be like that, of course.
And yeah, I think you're right in that it's simply what sells: Pop-anime with a casualized take on tone, tempo and theme that appeals to enough teenagers in Japan for it to be profitable.

Same as with games, I guess.. ..which makes me think that I don't want to be some elitist salty sperg either, who just scoffs at the mainstream/popular stuff. I hate doing that with music and games, and I don't really want to do it with anime either.

Oh well. I still remain true to my Cowboy Bebop though

Taking a more outlandish example with magic and fantasy elements on the opposite spectrum from Jin-Roh.

Cardcaptor Sakura, a character with ridiculous variety of powers (elemental control, time stop, time travel, creation of dimension breaking mazes, creation of living beings from nothing, flight, super speed, the list goes on).

The difference with her though, is the show constantly shows she has limits with each card taking a amount of effort to use.
She grows as a character able to do more for longer as the show progresses but she is never all-powerful.

They drive this home near the end with her trying to both convert and use two of the highest level cards in quick succession and just collapsing from the strain.
Oh an Eriol is a dick, just had to put that out there.
