Paper wasps (Polistes) are not aggressive outside of the immediate vicinity of their nest. Also they seem slow and they don't fly. It's probably cold. Most invertebrates get very lethargic when it's cold.

And Vespidae (the eusocial wasps you think of when someone says "wasp") being super aggressive murder machines is a stupid meme and needs to die. But sadly it won't because it seems almost everyone nowadays seems to freak the fuck out when there is a wasp in the same room as them.
>>
>>1532658

>Get weird growth on tail through random mutation.
>Attracts prey better, get more food, breed more often, pass on trait.
>Those with more elaborate growth on their tails feed more often, accelerating the variants of this growth.
>Growth begins to look more and more like something the most nutritious of their prey actually eat.
>Repeat process a billion times, refining the processes each time and eventually...
>Fucking spider tail!

Granted, while evolution is probably the primary mechanism, I suspect there's some mechanism, internal to evolution, that we've yet to pick up on.

As an example - there is a repeatable experiment you can do, where, should you expose a particular breed of fruit flies to bananas, within a few generations, they evolve specialized mandibles and digestive systems that render them capable of gaining vastly more nutrition from said bananas, but ONLY be able to eat said bananas.

...Which isn't too strange in itself, but the odd thing is, if you seal a group of these specialized fruit flies with a plastic partition, and have another group of pre-adapted fruit flies in the container next to them, and don't feed those flies bananas, those fruit flies will develop the same features, and starve to death.

So yeah, while there probably is a scientific explanation for that, there's still plenty of shit left for science to explain. I'll give ya that much.

wait what is your point? that a living organism can't adapt during it's lifespan or that once the flies have adapted to bananas they lose the ability to re-adapt? That is already understood, and it's known as vestigiality. It's the main reason why you have evolutionary dead ends. It's the opposite of a synapomorphy, when a trait shared by an ancestor species is lost in the current species. It's also due to reproductive span and the margin between them and the potential for adaptation. But yes genes to facilitate adaptation at different rates.
>>
>>1536072
Meh, the google-fu is failing me at the moment. This was an old school thing. I'll try again later.

>>1536186
The greentext's point was just to demonstrate a logical process through which something like this happens through evolution. One presumes the snake didn't suddenly spawn this spider tail randomly, but rather it is an inherited trait, developed and honed over countless generations.

The point to the rest of the post, was that there's some odd mysterious things to the mechanics of that process that are still not understood. If it wasn't clear, you have one group of specialized fruit flies, and one group not, and it seems, even though they aren't passing any genetic information between one another, the unspecialized group seems to take on that genetic pattern, simply by proximity, suggesting that there's some other mechanism involved in passing information between the two groups.

It's similar to the 100th monkey phenomenon (although that one was at least partially debunked.)

As I understand it, most mammals use facial identification like we do (though not just that, and unique to their breed).

Well most of the animal kingdom all share a common ancestry, our genes and even our brains share a lot in common not because it evolved that way but because its all from the same template.

And then there's just the pure logic in it, they might be dumb but they're not jellyfish. They see, they process and they think about it.

Another interesting fact I found: Smaller brain or less advanced brain make up isn't actually hindering smarter thought. While its mostly down to food, stimuli and general enviroment higher levels of thinking in smaller brains means they literally have to pause. I dunno what spider it was, a wolf spider that can form pretty complex plans for brains it size, the problem is that it needs at least an hour to "compute" it. This is also why you see jumping spiders freeze a tick between each jump, their brain is slowly chugging out the required information about the jump.
>>
>>1537052
Eh, well, sneks and most reptiles have no third lobe to speak of, because they don't interact socially very often. Thus they have no need to identify individual members of their species, and take a lot longer to be able to do so.

If you, for instance, take a territorial lizard who was raised with and thus accustom to another lizard, remove the sibling, and toss in another one, of roughly the same size and age, it will tend to react as if the stranger is in fact the same lizard.

If you try to do the same with cats, combat ensues immediately.

Dunno about the smaller brain taking more time to process - I know the opposite is often true. Particularly large animals react slower just by the time it takes chemical messages to get around their brains and bodies, in addition to the time it takes to actually get things in motion. Plus, the smaller, more primitive animals tend to react a lot more from reflex input - so much so that even severed limbs retain several different inputs, with several different reflex patterns, until they expire, where as a human limb might react to one or two, if any.

>>
>>1537152
Maybe, but here's the context of the size.
The fungal colony is 2400 acres, the forest you linked is 106 acres.

Heaviest, maybe, largest? not by a long shot.
>>
>>1537157
>>1537152
>>1537149
Dunno... Fungi are damned light, trees damned heavy... Though neither are animals.

Coral at least could *technically* be classified as an animal, heavier and larger than either (hundreds of miles across, sometimes miles deep, and basically stone), but it's more of an animal building a home, and counting the home as part of it, and the colony creature factor is more distant than either of those.

Not entirely related, but next time you have a wasp problem, try going out at night, knocking down the nest, and stepping on it.

Most wasps won't fly at night, even under artificial light, cuz without the sun they can't navigate their way back to their nests. Plus, yeah, lethargic when cold.

Discovering this took all the challenge and fun out knocking down wasp nests from overhangs when I was a child.

Ya gotta remember, baleen whales don't really 'swallow'. They cruise around with shit in their maws, and slowly let it trickle down their digestive tracks - and this can go on for half a day. (Which is why their maws make up such a large portion their length - that's food storage.)

I mean, yeah, if the whale notices it swallowed something it shouldn't have, it will spit it out eventually, but that's a rather big if - particularly if you happen to be in the right spot for those spiney baleen teeth to come down on ya when they close (or a hundred feet under when they open). The biggest ones incidentally kill things much larger than humans this way all the freakin time.

And divers are pretty regularly injured or killed just by their movements. They don't notice ya - and most sea life your size is better at getting out of their way. And what's worse, is the mid-sized ones are somewhat "playful".

...and then there's the ones with teeth... Or unicorn horns.

(My sister still can't be convinced these damn things are real.)

See this pink organ?
Its a sensory organ filter whales have to specifically tell them that something is too big in their mouth, and if one of them can chomp a pelican delicately enough to not instantly crush it, and know it was in its mouth, it will for sure know something the size of a human is in there.
