Previous thread >>4042021
This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

thanks for the reply, I'd probably still use it to switch video even though it'd be highly inconvenient. That's just the kind of person I am. It would be pretty neat because I could hook up stuff like my n64 and vcr to the receiver. Then whenever I get around to buying some speakers I'll be totally set.

These are the two I'm looking at, again for very cheap.

The onkyo is pretty cool because it has a pc in
>>

hell yeah, those are nice receivers man. Go for it, and play some OG Xbox in surround sound
>>
>>4072398
Hmm I've read around that the onkyos have some issue with the baled that makes it need regular servicing. Maybe the one I'm looking at is a dud. I might go for the pioneer in that case
>>
>>4072467
If they're the same price I would go with the Pioneer, but I'm a pioneer fan.

Currently looking at a PVM-2054QM I might bid on. Is it a good model? It has all the hookups for RGB/Component. How much would you pay?

What are your thoughts, anon?
>>

600 tv line model. it really depends on your local options.

if local is possible $150 if you are forced with ebay $200-250 (shipping is included in this estimate)

$150 for a 20 inch is possible shipped off of ebay but it's hard with so many people listing at $500-800 for no real reason.

That's almost 2 years old, and 5K photos ago; I was still figuring out how to use the camera and leaving white balance up to it.

Different system (Saturn versus PS1) and earlier save, but this is fresh; Processed from RAW to give an accurate take on what it looks like color wise.

>>4072481
Early to Mid 90s set, but 600TVL and with an OSD. Would make a rather nice monitor.

If I didn't have a 20'' PVM and wanted to get one, $150 these days probably would be good, ignoring shipping, but I could see it going for more.
I would assume you're shipping it, so add another $50-70 on top of that; I would -demand- photos of how it's packed if you do have it shipped to avoid getting a box full of broken glass.

Oh well. Guess I won't be able to afford it if the price escalates. Gotta watch my finances until I'm finished studying.

Later this week I'll be picking up a Bang & Olufsen MX 4000 (most recent chassis), which according to the shmup forums is pretty decent for a consumer TV (also features nice design). It comes with the fancy remote with the LCD display which usually sells for about 50€ on its own. I payed 15€, heh.

the connector is a 50 pin variation of din 41612, not common but not impossible to source.
However you might just get away using a bog standard IDC DC3 angled header.

I did drop the last $90 I had on my first PVM, but that's because I'm an idiot.

>>
>>4072585
Only options I know are to change the geometry values for your resolution of choice in Arcade OSD. Other than that on a per application basis some emulators might have the feature to offset the image, I know groovy mame has sliders for it and I use Epsxe's offset settings to get different games fitting my tv correctly. I haven't tried this at all but I've heard of people getting certain versions of Catalyst Control Center working along with their CRT Emudriver card and that might let you customize your offsets a little more.

If you look me up by what I namefag with here on Steam you will find me but here is a quick write up for moving your image up vertically with Arcade OSD. You want to open up Arcade OSD and the first thing you want to do is use the number 2 key to move the on screen display to your CRT and press enter on "Attach OSD to current monitor". Once your CRT is for sure attached to Arcade OSD open up the video modes list and find the correct resolution for the system you want, lets say we want to play an NES game we'll go ahead and press enter on 256x224p from the mode list and Arcade OSD should take over your whole screen like pic related. Then you'll want to hit enter on Vertical geometry and it will bring up the menu where you can change the front and back porch values to tweak the geometry. For your request if you want to raise your image vertically you will want to experiment with making the V front porch value higher as well as making the V back porch value lower, also you can change either value without necessarily having to raise or lower the other like if I were to make my front porch and my back porch 12 ln in this picture but if the two values add up to too few or too many lines you'll start recieving a broken picture and have to undo your last change so it's generally good to raise when value as you lower the other and vice versa. Add me on Steam if you'd like to ask any other questions, I only completed my setup a couple months ago so I'm still learning as well.
>>
>>4072471
They round out to about the same price. But I think I will end up going with the pioneer. It'll cost me about 70 bucks so not as cheap as I was hoping. What do you think should I go for it? Will it clean up the audio from my sound bar at least until I get some proper speakers. Also it says it upscales video. I'm wondering if it will induce any lag
>>
>>4072906
Now that I'm thinking about it I'm not even sure how I would be hooking up everything between the extron and the receiver.

if you just want mono audio, sure? I'd just get a setup so you can plug in your consoles audio out into a switcher or something. If you wanna go cheap go RCA to 2.5mm female to PC speaker.

Bypass the PVM entirely for audio. Get an adapter to go from 2RCA to the presumably 3.5mm cable the PC speakers have.

>>4072969
And that, as well as the fact that I'll need to disassemble it to even get a list of caps needed(never been able to find a service manual for the XC-3730c) is why I've had it for 3 years now and it's still not done.

This is just a small PCB on the back; There are much larger ones mounted beside the tube that have fewer but larger ones. And all the little bodge wires/components added after the fact on the opposite side of said boards.

Slot mask is only found on NEC computer monitors.

I used to mess around with broadcast monitors and shit now I just emulate on a PC CRT with scan lines turned on because I'm bluddy lazy and the result is basically the same. I pretty much recommend this route to anyone who doesn't already have a large game collection or isn't rich. You can get the cool kid stuff later but you shouldn't feel bad or anything you can have the meme right now for cheap or free.
>>
>>4073748
Why not just run the thing on 240p at 120Hz?
That way you won't even need a scanline filter
>>
>>4073753
Because it's VGA it can't go lower than 640x480. Turning scan lines on just removes every second line so the result is the same. No multiscan required.

Nigga any PC CRT monitor can do 240p if you use 120Hz
>>
>>4073765
This is correct, but it doesn't go into detail as to why this is. A VGA CRT can only go down to a hsync of 31Khz, we all know this, and 240p is 15Khz, duh. So you double the refresh rate to 120hz and this brings it up to 31Khz and bobs your fuckin uncle.

This isn't a new trick by any means, but apparently it's not common knowledge. Here's a guide from /r/crtgaming that's helpful if you want to know more.

>>
>>4073881
i was told flat screen = geometry issues?
>>
>>4073883
It can, but it really depends. The issue arises from the fact that only the outside portion of the glass is flat and the inside is still curved, thus leading to some weird geometry. My VGA CRT is a flatscreen and I don't notice any geometry issues whatsoever after adjusting the settings so I'm sure if you fiddle around in the service menu you can get it right. But don't trust me, look at all the pics people have posted of flatscreen trinnies running /vr/ consoles and judge for yourself.
>>
>>4073883
They're pretty minor issues, tbqhfamicom. Flat-screen Sonys are generally relatively 'new', have fewer hours, support component and/or s-vid, maybe even better in AUS, if you guys use SCART. They look nice, come in tiny to huge sizes, and are easier to find. They're really solid sets most of the time. Not to say every single one is great, but the geometry issues are seriously overblown around here; >>4073885 is definitely right about scoping one out for yourself.
>>
>>4073885
flat VGAs are less affected by geometry issues.
Horizontal linearity is a real problem for most flat TVs
>>
>>4073909
A lot of these cheap flatscreens are just normal ones with a lens in front of them
>>

Broadcast store has it listed at 560 lines. And I'd never tell someone to go try a monitor, it's a cheap line to try and win a conversation.

But I'll say it again, I don't think I'm missing out on too much by not picking the 3230 up. It really doesn't offer anything to my setup.
>>
Quick question by someone uninitiated:
When displaying a 480p/480i signal (assuming 640x480 resolution) on a 600TVL screen, does that mean that the picture will be slightly squashed horizontally (with loss of quality), or that ~20px will be missing on either side?

Or does it not matter altogether because this are is in overscan anyway?

Broadcaststore is a pretty good resource but they don't always get things right, especially regarding old and obscure equipment.

Yes, which is why I asked here. It is by matter of fact the basic research which had me confused in the first place, so I hoped somebody with a thorough understanding could give me a short answer.

TVL is the horizontal resolution of the tube/gun/etc. CRTs are not fixed resolution like flat panels, so it isn't hard mapped to a specific part of the screen.

~540TVL or so is all that's needed to resolve your normal NTSC broadcast signal (720x480), so 600TVL would have no issue with 640x480.

The higher horizontal resolution you attempt to display on a lower TVL monitor, the less detail you'll be able to resolve absolutely, and explicitly. Where trying to display 1000px(or more) of information across a tube rated for 700TVL would work, you're not going to be able to resolve individual detail across the screen as well as you would when using a tube with higher TVL. No information is actually being lost so much as it's being blended together.

>>4074370
Overscan is the part of the picture that isn't visible due to being drawn outside the visible boundries of the screen. If your TV has a service menu, and you adjust it so that your PSP games fit the screen horizontally better, you're going to end up with games that would normally fill the screen properly losing massive parts to over scan.

Additionally, because the way the PSP's TVout works, you're very unlikely to be able to actually completely fill the screen even with service menu adjustments.

I'm sure there are video processors out there that will do what you want, but they're not exactly going to be cheap. You'd be better just dealing with the smaller image. That's just how the PSP is, windowboxed.

Thank you, that was exactly what I needed to know. Also I just now realize that TVL counts only the black lines (disregarding the white in between), which means the white lines, too, should be regarded as part of the individually discernible output, duh. This obviously gives a higher resolution then 640. It just had me confused because 600 < 640 and the false assumption that BIGGER NUMBER MEANS BETTER RIGHT?

It just so happened to fit as an example of "high resolution on low TVL", since you've got the 700-800ish maybe Megaview and a 1080p signal.

CRTs with shadow masks/aperture grilles, aka colour ones, sure.

However in the past I've worked on 8k tricolour film recorders for high end imaging applications which would make you eat your words. Specialised monochrome tubes can handle that sort of resolution with ease, even tiddly 5" ones.

I was an early adapter to LCDs. I've never personally owned a 1600x1200 CRT (if I did I don't remember) or any 16:9 monitors. In FPS games especially having a super small reticle looked terrible. I never understood the hipster love for monitors like a fw900 etc. This is in retrospect. At the time I loved it. Going back from my current 1080p gsync monitor though it's bad.

Old PC games have different style huds for that reason I think. They were small and simple.

I was responding to somebody who said CRTs in general couldn't handle high resolutions, as in the tube technology.

You seem to think that a CRT is the box you either plug into your computer/console or watch tv/movies on. This is not really the case any more than the LCD in a calculator is the same as the one you hang on the wall and play CoD on.

Those monochrome tubes are a completely different beast to the CRTs used in TVs and monitors; They don't have a mask, so they only limits in terms of resolution are how focused you can get the gun and the actual grain of the phosphor coating in the tube. It's not something you could quite look at directly, but is capable of resolving extreme levels of detail.

On the topic of PC Monitors though, the .25mm tube in my SGI handles 1080p much much more nicely than the Megaview does, both in person and photos, at least when you can avoid moire.

Spoiler for more not /vr/

>You seem to think that a CRT is the box you either plug into your computer/console or watch tv/movies on.
That's exactly what it is... Sometimes you may need to install some software. Depends what you're talking about. Most the time the only options you have were the display itself. Especially when talking about retro.

We are talking about displays here. Maybe in theory there's some technology to let CRTs be good at high resolutions but I never saw it in consumer tech.

Honestly, I'd only buy a PVM if I was still doing RGB mod work for old consoles, since you need to be able to test it at its highest quality.

Consumer CRT's are fine. People still throw them out all the time, or sell them for peanuts. You could do free/10-20 for a nice sized one, and then drop 20 bucks on a new remote, vs. 300+ that these guys are asking for PVM/BVMs.

That's why I have so many (pro models) and educated myself on how to repair and maintain them. Sure random components can fail (and be replaced) but the tubes themselves honestly show very little wear indeed.

Again, thanks for the concern but I'd like to think I have this covered.

>planned obsolescence
Has nothing to do with that. You got two main things that are killing CRTs.

Phosphor. This is the main one you fanboys ignore. In no way is phosphor that old performing like new.

Heat. This gets more true the newer the CRT you're talking about.

Look at arcades. Just about everyone in use today has some kind of replacement.
>>
I've seen laserdisc talk here before, and I've got a question.
Is there big quality difference between a model with best video output of s-video compared to a model (the more recent ones, from what I've seen) that can do component?
Or does anyone know of a model that can output pure RGB?
>>
>>4077481
Don't even bother with that guy. He's a borderline troll. I'm sure he's just gonna go inside the tube and paint new phosphors on or some shit once it gets to that, cause he's the CRT repair man extraordinaire!

>>4077486
Laserdisc isn't really related to /vr/ or the thread, the only reason it gets brought up is because our resident Taylor Swift fan loves them quite a bit.
>>
>>4077486
I don't know a lot about Laserdisc but I do know the ones that claim RGB or HDMI support are garbage or lying. Laserdisc weren't coded for RGB.
>>4077489
Seems that way.

>>4077486
laserdiscs is a composite video signal, so anything besides that isn't going to offer much better quality since its just converting it.

Riddle me this then:

How come when I hook up a BKM-14L to one of my BVM-20F1Es with 90k hours on its original tube it calibrates EXACTLY the same as when I hook it up to my 5k hour example?

And to support my claims because you fanboys never will.

Basically the TLDR of this is if you're pushing 20k+ hours on your CRT it's already fucked. No CRT will come close to being in spec today. The phosphor is decaying. Both luminance and color reproduction are effected. This is fact. CRT manufactures know this and this is why they let you crank the luminance up. All you're doing is preventing the death and ruining color reproduction and contrast.

This article talks about other factors effecting lifespans of CRTs but phosphor is the number one limiting factor.

Did you miss the part where I said I was calibrating using the official Sony device aka BKM-14L?

Bottom line is that using the official method supported by the manufacturer a 90k tube calibrates the same as a 5k one. The only reason Sony typically replaced tubes at ~30k hours was when they had fucking timecodes burned into them.

Jesus you booksmart kids really get on my tits sometimes.
>>
>>4077583

Let me guess. You think this thing never needs calibration itself? Since you already think it's some super precise instrument...

Which it does. A 90k hour tube and a 5k one measuring exactly the same. Does this not suggest to you that the phosphors have not drifted wildly in the intervening 85k hours?

As far as absolute calibration is concerned SMPTE colour bars measure up just fine both using the blue only option on the monitor and when checked externally using a GretagMacbeth iOne puck.
At this point I may as well ask your profession credentials? I was test technician for pic related before it was absorbed into amazon and relocated to the US. Well actually combined with the internal white test signal and analyze function available on the BVM that's exactly what it shows, along with the x and y coordinates.

I may dig out my iOne in a bit and do an impartial comparison for my own peace of mind but I'm done arguing with some burger-flipper on a cantonese decoupage forum.

It's expressed in cd/m2 which is generally used to denote luminance unless I'm missing something?
>>

>mysterious
What's mysterious about? Rtfm.
It measures the luminance to a certain point. It's not going to tell the luminance though. You need to do that test manually. That's why I said this tool is more for to keep a cabinet of monitors at the same spec than it is to keep a monitor at its top performance.
>>
>>4077681
So if you display the pure white internal signal (or one from a calibrated source) and then use the analyze function to measure the luminance value of that displayed signal this would tell you nothing about the condition of the tube?

It could fail.

The Famicom only deserves to be output at Composite and nothing else higher than that because the colors of the NESRGB mod are inaccurate.

You're right. Composite is really great in the Famicom and the RGB mod has awful colors.
But I do use RGB and/or Component (YPbPr) for most of my other consoles, though. And they go to my D32E1WU BVM.

And my bedroom has a Samsung CRT where most of my consoles go with HD Retrovision cables.
I just had a CRT there for retro games since most of my modern games, movies and TV watching go to my living room/home theater #1 with an LG OLED 4K TV.

My game room/home theater #2 has all my retro games with a BVM.

>>

no they run at 60Hz fine, neither region can do RGB, you're thinking of component, which is YPBPR and is different to RGB. The good news is many of the later generation PVM/BVMs have YPBPR inputs on expansion cards that give you an extremely crisp 480p image.
>>4079056
play around with geometry first, there should be a guide in the manual for which order you set these to control the picture effectively. normally, contrast(beam intensity, the higher the harder the tube is worked) is 100%, brightness(actually sets the contrast ratio) at 50%, now unless you have a reference monitor the color is going to be garbage, just adjust your convergence if you have a rainbow effect at the center of the display, edges are always going to be shit.
>>
>>4079107
>neither region can do RGB
huh, I was under the impression that PAL gamecube can output RGB to at least 480i. And I'm not thinking of component, because I know for a fact my NTSC gamecube won't do component without a mod or expensive cables, otherwise I wouldn't be asking.
>>

they're fine and don't add lag. A good thing is that it seems most support full color range (unlike the hdfury gamer). AFAIK limit is 1080p for all of them.
Some are powered by HDMI, and sometimes the HDMI device doesn't provice enough power (like the PS4), so if it's the case with OSSC either go through an AV receiver, or buy an USB powered converter.

Are there any models sold for under 50€? I am not interested in one with collector's worth, but one that will run my games.

A halfway decent CRT projector with 5"
tubes will chew up a 1080p signal and shit out gold.

Especially with those HDMI cards you can get for them.

I've seem a CRT projector with PS4 games and it's AMAZING.

To say nothing watching a remastered blu-ray on one.

You're not even gonna get a projector with 5" tubes, 7" is minimum.

Any set with 7" tubes will not do a 1080p or 1080i signal justice, maybe 720p. Now an 8" or 9" set, that's good.

get a HDMI to VGA active converter, use the guide posted ITT to setup custom resolutions, VGA to SCART or directly connected to the RGB inputs, sync from composite fed into the EXT SYNC port, there are countless guides on how to combine VGA H&V sync signals into a composite sync if for some reason you don't get that directly from the converter.

It's weird that the light is on. Sometimes mine won't power up fully. It seems to be that the wires from the power plug to the B board (I believe) are crimped between part of the case and I think it shorts them out. If I wiggle the wired around it'll power up and stay on. Doesn't seem to be bad solder joints either. I don't get the light though, so this could be something else.

Are you German/from Hamburg? You may have luck looking for a B&O, I've seen that they are still rather common in Germany (especially the big cities) and can usually be had rather cheap. They used to cost a fortune new.

A Bang & Olufsen Beovision MX 4000 is a pretty great TV from what I've heard (read up on them here http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=43861) that also has great design. I got one sitting around which I picked up on the weekend for 15€ including a Beo-4 remote, but I've yet to test it. Already love the design so far (got the white one).

Just make sure it is a newer version chassis (check out the label on the back) and make sure to get one with the remote.

It sure is no PVM and consumer Trinitrons will definitely have better picture quality, but the overall package is quite a steal for what you pay. Comes with a S-Video and 2 SCART connectors, supports RGB and PAL as well as NTSC. Also there's an interesting deinterlace-feature for 480i-content. Did I mention the great design?

>>
>>4084512
It is VGA (RGBHV) just separated out into 5 BNCs rather than sent over a single Dsub15.

The reason you can't use it for your console is because the monitor will only accept 31khz + signals and the Playstation only outputs 15khz.
>>
>>4084564
Adding to this, A PS2 outputting 480p RGsB over component cables could be hooked up but it still wouldn't play any original PlayStation games as those are all 15khz.

Well duh, of course he could. That's not the point. Anon asked if he could plug directly into the BNCs with a retro console which he cannot. He can't even plug the OSSC in directly without a DAC in between (plus a breakout cable if he wants to use the RGBHV input rather than the plain VGA.

Here's my Lacie EB IV displaying Mega CD through an OSSC+DAC combo.
>>
>>4085650
>those vertical lines
how is that even possible? is this some kind of effect the OSSC generates?

my setup for running home consoles on a lacie EB II was to use a lattice machxo CPDL as a simple Hsync multiplier, it takes a composite sync and splits it into separate timings, then for every horizontal clock i generate two edges, since the clock component is always TTL it works entirely in the digital domain, no DSP shit. this lets you get a 31kHz RGBHV signal that any PC monitor will accept.

since the RGB signal is completely untouched you do get a soft horizontal resolution but nothing disgusting. i imagine applying a pull down to the RGB signal at say 4x hsync would let you generate those vertical lines like you have in the pic.
>>
>>4085713
Those vertical lines are the aperture grille lines of the Lacie's Diamondtron tube.

They're not generated but rather a physical property of the display.

Something like this would work. Sorry can't comment on quality of individual cables available in Germany as I'm a britfag. Alternatively you could get a breakout adaptor like pic related and daisy-chain a known good SCART from retrogamingcables.co.uk or retro console accessories in the US.

It's a monitor not a TV (no tuner) and has no built in speakers. The official ones for it are SS-X2A or SS-X6A but you can run any passives you like from the built in audio amplifier.

Hope this helps and you get it for a good price!

It's because it's a good looking monitor. Does widescreen for movies, has better motion than any LCD to date. Scales and handles 4:3 and black levels of CRT look fine when displaying centered video. It's the best of all worlds but it'll break your back putting in place at ~100lbs. And you get good color if it's calibrated and not janked up.

Also, 1600x1200 or even 1920x1440 look fine if you have hud scaling and can work well for other things like 6x scaling on DOS games 320x200/240 (with stretching on 200). Otherwise the good point about having CRTs that go to that res, is that they also go lower and look great doing it. Change your in game resolution and you can basically use whatever works.

LCDs still have a ways to go for temporal resolution to not be shit.

So I was thinking about importing an original Japanese Famicom. I planned on not modding it for AV and embracing the system's shortcomings, for the authentic sitting-in-front-of-your-TV-till-your-legs-fall-asleep-experience. I don't mind the RF-hookup, I don't care about razor-sharp pixels.

I thought I could just hook the system up to my PAL TV, seeing as it supports NTSC signals - or so I thought. I just now realized that it only supports NTSC over AV, while the RF demodulator will only support PAL. PALcucked yet again. Yikes.

So, what are my options here if I don't want to modify the console and keep the shitty quality of the RF signal? I know there's exotic hardware variants like the Hong Kong version, which can output PAL 60hz, but those are hard to come by. Is there a way to convert RF to Composite Video + Audio without introducing lag? Are there cheap and reliable options, like using a Set-Top-Box of sorts, that will accept a NTSC RF signal and relay composite or SCART?

Halp.

VCRs with busted mechanics can be had dirt-cheap here, however finding an NTSC one here in Europe might be impractical. Is the region even important? Will feeding an NTSC signal through RF simply output NTSC over AV regardless of the device? After all the device does not process the colour signal. What may be a bigger problem is accessing the output channel, is it even in the correct bandwidth for the VCR to pick up?

Also, something like in the pic can be had cheaply from Ali Express, however at no point does it state whether it works with PAL, NTSC, or whether it matters at all. Will this introduce lag?
>>
>>4088526
Your initial question brings up the complications I was imagining, a VCR that takes in NTSC and spits out PAL seems unlikely. I was under the impression your display could do NTSC over composite though, just not RF. That pic you posted is actually exactly what I was talking about. Whenever I search on eBay I get a million hits on that device from the UK, I would try one of those. I'm pretty sure they'll do whatever RF standard you throw at it, but the eBay auctions are a little more clear. Then you can get composite out, presumably in whatever formats it supports. Also you'll need an F-Type adapter since Japan and US use a different coax connector for RF. In the US I can go straight to channel 95 or 96 on any old CRT or VCR to get a good signal on my OG Famicoms. On sets that only support RF and don't have full cable tuners (can't tune up to 95/95), I use an old cable box that spits out on channel 3 or 4, but will take in full cable tuning. It's a weird setup, but I bet you can get something working.

>I was under the impression your display could do NTSC over composite though, just not RF.
That's what I was saying - the CRT will do NTSC fine, just not over RF. AV only.

I've already read about the different coaxial cables and adapters, that shouldn't be hard to find and/or make myself. Alternatively I may be able to use the RF adapter from my NES, provided I can find it. If not, they're cheap on ebay.

There seems to be a way to fix missing audio by changing the frequency on the RF modulator (see here http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=7901.30), but with a tuner that already supports NTSC and spits out RCA, that shouldn't be a problem, right?

I think I'll try and go with the Tuner from aliexpress or ebay, thanks for the help!
>>
>>4088573
Perfect, you can definitely get something going with an NTSC tuner then. You're correct about audio, 95 or 96 (corresponds to channel settings 1 and 2 on the Famicom) on an NTSC tuner does audio and video almost perfectly (hell, those Chinese tuners might even support NTSC-J, who knows). The channel you use varies in the US because they are closer to FM radio frequencies than US Cable channels, so 95 gets more interference in my city due to a powerful radio station, but 95 was better in the sticks back home. I don't know how the RF spectrum is in your neck of the woods, but I'm certain you can get something going. Also, and I'm sure you know this, but be careful about power supplies. 9V DC Center Pin Negative, 850mA-1000mA

Yeah, I read about power supplies and how you can fry your Famicom by using an american NES power supply. I planned on getting an original EU SEGA Master system/Genesis power supply, those are said to work reliably with the Famicom.

The only thing I worry about now is lag. Do Tuners introduce lag, and if so, how could I test for it?
>>
>>4088610
I bring up OLED because it surpasses CRT in all ways. LCD only in some. Contrast being the big one.
>>
>>4088612
RF to a CRT should be lag free since it (should be) all analog, even through a tuner. EU Genesis PSU is a safe bet, hombre; though I think it needs to be a Model 1 PSU, if I'm remembering correctly, model II has a different sized barrel.
>>
>>4088615
Correct, Model 1 was what I read. What about the FDS though? Is there any local PSU I could use for that?

I probably won't get around buying all of this anytime soon as I'll move within a year, also currently on a budget until I'm finished studying. I just like planning ahead.
>>
>>4088625
The FDS can actually run on batteries, but frankly, you should get an FDS-Stick. Real disk systems are a fucking nightmare to maintain, and buying games for collector value is a fool's errand because they could all have been re-written and not be original (even if they were re-written with the original game), if they work at all. Also an FDS-Stick is like $15USD and will run everything, you just plug it into the RAM Adapter. I've been collecting Famicom stuff for well over a decade and I've never even bothered with the FDS, simply because they're heavy to ship, and are incredibly unreliable, even when restored. The FDS library isn't super amazing, most of the really great games were ported to cart, with a few exceptions of course. The EverDrive N8 has bad FDS audio, but it too will run the games pretty well, good enough for the few I want to play anyway.
>>
>>4088115
Did you heard a hiss from the tube while working on the yoke?

>>4088082
It was completely the opposite for me, I only had some some cheap TV back then but only for a year then dad gave me a KV-M1400D and all other TVs in the house were Trinitrons as well and a Mitsubishi Diamondtron for my Pentium(1 or 2?) PC.
>>
>>4088629
Yeah, getting the FDS stick was part of the plan, still it would be nice to have the whole thing, if only for aesthetics. There's places that sell them restored and modded with disk-writing enabled (I may be too inept to perform the mod myself), so if anything, I'd get one or two games on disk for sentimental value (e.g. Metroid and Zelda) and a couple of disks to rewrite whenever I felt like playing off actual hardware. Also a couple of replacement drive belts can't hurt. I'm not big on collecting solely for the purpose of collecting things, so a FDS-Stick (if I get the FDS) and Everdrive N8 (famicom edition because everything else would look shit) are what I'd go for.

From what I've heard, the N8 emulated FDS audio will still make your ears bleed, has there been any progress? VRC expansion audio works pretty good by now though, right?
>>
>>4088637
every FDS audio FPGA effort falls short. Even NT Mini is only acceptable.
>>
>>4088637
That's fair, the FDS/OG Famicom combo is gorgeous. EDN8 FDS audio is truly terrible, and Krikzz has completely abandoned all his flashcarts that aren't whatever new product he's working on at any given time, so no, there's been no improvement and it's unlikely there ever will be unfortunately. The games play perfectly, but the FDS expansion audio is literally just out of tune and brutal. Some VRC and (all?) NAMCOT expansion audio games sound very close to the real deal (based on my A/Bing with real carts). A few games are still missing expansion audio support, but play correctly otherwise, last I checked.

After a lot of searching locally, I've found what I think is an acceptable CRT. It's not perfect, it doesn't do RGB or component. It does have S-video though, and it's about as large as I would want for vintage gaming.

I didn't have a lot of choice, people around here either recycled their CRTs or they're charging above eBay prices because they think someone is going to come along and buy their non-RGB Sony PVM for $100.

Anyone know anything about these? It's a Philips LTC 2919/90

>>
>>4090245
S-Video and Component aren't uncommon, but RGB is. Component got became pretty standard throughout the 2000s on flat-screen CRTs, based on what I've owned/seen.
>>
>>4089687
not the anon you're replying to but generally when something blinks or beeps a certain amount of times it's a code for a problem, like post codes on a computer. In this case you've got four blinks which could mean vertical deflection loss. You don't see a horizontal line onscreen for a split second, do you?
>>
>>4089687
>>4090445
It could be possible that something's wrong with the cables for the deflection coils like either the cable isn't plugged correctly to the board or the wires broke off on the terminals.
There are 4 thick wires with a huge connector which go to the yoke.

>>
>>4090695
Isn't CVT meant for for CRTs? Either works, but I was under the impression that CVT works best on a CRT. Either way, you can see there's no scaling being done if you look at the active pixels and match them to your resolution.
>>
Have you guys done any fan mods too get the temp down in the PCB area of CRTs?
>>
>>4090710
I thought CVT is a tighter timing standard intended for lcd, but after looking it up that's CVT-RB apparently. GTF is the older standard and practically guaranteed to work on any monitor. In any case, if it works, go for it.

>>
>>4090863
No, it stays black: I press POWER, then the usual sound of the screen whet turns on, then a "pop" sound and then the red LED blinking. Not a single line of light or dot in the screen.
>>
>>4091098
Yes they're good, many of them support component and or s-video, and as far as CRTs go, they were manufactured 'recently' (2000s). The issues are geometry based; typically minor distortion around the corners of the screen, and are innate to being a 'flat' tube. They aren't really fixable, but can be mitigated a bit with tweaking. They are great sets for the most part. I used one throughout college (07-11) for 360 stuff and my retro consoles and I really enjoyed it.
>>
>>4091098
Also, and it would probably be real obvious, but the HD flatscreen CRTs are not good for retro and weigh 300lbs. SD is what you want, and is highly likely what your local guy is selling.
>>
>>4091098
FD Trinitrons are pretty good, actually. People say they have geometry issues which is funny because Sony markets them as having less geometry issues. It's all about how well they're set up. If you can get one with the remote for cheap I would recommend it, especially if it's a Wega as those have awesome sound. What models do you have available to you? If you find a FS310 you really ought to get it as those have a built in subwoofer and are the best SD consumer Trinitrons available imo.

I have a SNES related question;

When I first used an emulator, I felt that the pixels looked to raw and sharp compared to my real SNES.

Obviously I played my SNES on a CRT as opposed to the LCD of my computer. My console was also a 2-chip.

So which factor had more impact on softening the image; the fact that I was playing on a CRT or the fact that I had a 2chip snes?

In other words, if i were to play a 1chip on a CRT, would it still look 'soft' in a nice way? Does it depend on the cable used?

>In other words, if i were to play a 1chip on a CRT, would it still look 'soft' in a nice way?
yes.
CRTs have blooming, meaning surrounding phosphors are illuminated, especially on bright colours. Only the sharpest of CRTs like computer monitors or very high end video monitors like those 1000TVL BVMs will have something similar to LCDs.
>>
>>4091753
thanks. Since I became aware of 2chip vs 1chip snes, I learned that 2chip has a horizontal smearing effect. That seems like a bad idea to me but I wondered if that was contributing to the image softness I was used to.
But then again I was also playing with composite cables, so maybe that softened things even further

I'd make sure both chroma and phase are brought back to their center position(0 and STD presumably) then make sure you don't have anything going into the outputs of the line you're using.

I'm trying to connect my PC to my tv with nvidia custom resolution settings and no matter what I try I just get some variation of this. I'm new to this shit so if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong that would be cool.

You might want to start with how it's connected, and what resolutions / frame rate you're attempting.
>>
>>4092321
dvi to component and I'm trying to output 480i and 240p.
>>
>>4092330
What, like a straight cable? If so, you do know that (aside from pass through pins strictly for VGA backwards comparability) the D in DVI is for digital, right? And that component is in no way even remotely digital.
Any straight cable that goes from a DVI connector to component is intended for devices sending component through a DVI connector, not DVI through a DVI connector. You need some sort of active digital to analog converter to do that.
>>
>>4092350
Its dvi-i which should be able to output both digital and analog. I've been messing with it some more and I've gotten it to display a picture clear enough to see what's being displayed but still nowhere near decent quality.

>strictly for VGA backwards comparability
Unless you made this cable yourself, I doubt it's wired to those pins, and even if it is, the analog out is RGB & horizontal sync, while component is YPbPr, some weird combination of luma & sync, the difference between blue and luma, and
the difference between red and luma. Completely incompatible with each other without custom circuitry between the signal types.

Oh okay so I'm just retarded. So is there any way to get direct output without using a converter?
>>
>>4092378
No, not unless your feeling brave and want to try to open up the back of your TV and effectively wire directly to the tube.

Any improvements I should make, also there's times where you can see the pixels changing like a flip book so to speak is that normal?

So I found a CRT that supports component. I'm currently using a Wii with all the virtual console games installed. Will the snes to N64 games look better than if I was using composite? I heard the upscaling fucks things up

Had to carry mine down a flight of stairs that involved a turn. That was the most ridiculous shit I've experienced. Sliced my finger open immediately but had to keep carrying. I'm not in shape so that didn't make it any easier. Got to my place and called up some drug addicts to carry the fucking thing up a flight of stairs for me.

Do you have like 3 receivers

Hard to tell given there's not even one in that pic and that's all the evidence we have to go on...

I'll ask here because I don't know if it deserves its own thread;
What's the best RGB cable for a 1Chip-02 Super Fami? I've been told to go to retrogamingcables, but their selection is confusing. I've heard sync on luma is best, but the one they sell is upposedly for 1Chip-03. Any recommendations? They have a packapunch cable that costs double but im not sure if worth it.

to rephrase;
CSync or Sync over Luma?
EuroSCART or JP21?
>>

There's a KV model for 50$ in my area. Worth it?
>>
>>4091205
I love it. Tables also look a bit retro too. but the tables look more like the 50s/60s.

I don't have an A/V receiver, but I guess that tha Marantz amp + the Joytech SCART switcher can count as one.
Other units are a LD player, tape deck, a DAC and a cable modem/router

All Sony televisions are KVs. What you should look at is what comes after the size. What you posted is a 20" from the TS30 line. It has S-Video on it, which is good. It's also got the screen adjustment dials on the front which means you don't need to go into the service menu for some things. Overall it's a nice enough smaller set from the 90's, but it's not really worth $50. I would shoot the guy a lowball offer and see how he responds.

You summer kids need to calm down. $50 for that shit? No man.
